July 8, 2017 marked the 7th running of Crusher in the Tushar, a gravel race held in the Tushar mountains near Beaver, Utah. Making this event unique is the high altitude and prevalence of extended climbing, which arguably makes Crusher in the Tushar one of the hardest gravel races on the planet, despite being 70 miles / 112 kilometres in length.
JOM and the Gravel Cyclist crew of Mr and Mrs K-Dogg flew in from Gainesville, Florida to contest the event... from sea level with no acclimatization. Yikes!

If I used the raw footage sans music, you could hear my teammate breathing hard!

How do Floridians train for climbing? Riding bridges or parking garages? This is sarcastic, but i am curious..

Eddie, you either have good genetics (not me), or you ride the hills in our area. We do have a good amount of roller hills close to Gainesville, but no real mountains by any means. For me, it comes down to riding lots of base miles, and just doing what you can! However, there is no bluffing the altitude - that killed me, and things weren't helped by this bronchial infection I've been dragging around. Regardless, fab event and I plan to return! Those beer on the course were very helpful to my spirits :)

Thanks for the inspiration. I'm heading to Park City this summer and I'm going to bring my new gravel bike instead of the roadie.

Just wanted to ask how slow is a gravel bike on pavement compared to a road bike? I know a road bike is faster but how much faster

That will largely depend on the tyres... as an example, I completed a fast roadie century last weekend on Lynskey's PRO GR gravel bike. The bike was fitted with Boyd Jocassee 650b carbon wheels and Panaracer's Gravelking tyres in 1.5" (smooth tread). I hung in the front bunch all the way... those tyres are wider and a bit heavier than your average roadie tyre, but 22+mph average speed on a hilly course is nothing to be sneezed at. You could totally run road width tyres and hang no problems... sure, the angles aren't optimal for a fast road ride, but you can make it work.

Gravel Cyclist but in terms of gearing a gravel bike shouldn't that slow on pavement like a MTB right?

A lot of gravel bikes are fitted with a 46 tooth big chainring. If you're running say an 11-32 or 11-28 cassette, you can ride that on the road without worries. Nothing stopping you from swapping chainrings to a 48T or 50T if you need something bigger.
