too bad Djokovic didnt play 2017. He would have been raped by Federer three or four times in a row, as happened to all the other players that year, including Nadal. When Djokovic returned, in the middle of 2018, Federer was already tired and had lost his pace from 2017. It was his last year like the good times. In 2019 he still played very well, but it doesn't compare to 2017. I believe he would beat Djokovic in three straight sets at Wimbledon in 2017.

The special thing about 2017 Federer is how he finally figured out his backhand and made it a weapon. Prior to that, his backhand was his only weak point. People could no longer go to his backhand for safety because it was sincerely dangerous. 2017 Federer was maxed out in every regard, and one of if not the greatest peaks of any player ever.

sure, i have been saying the exact -- exact -- same things. i doubt we ever fail by putting superlatives on federer. i am 70 and i actually taught tennis many many years ago. the way we were taught, federer does every shot what we hoped to get a student to do a few times in practice. for the old teachers, federer was God coming back to save their religion. finally i will say what people intuit - the one-handed backhand is the most elegant and graceful movement in tennis. it also requires the most practice.
@sasook

I don’t agree he was maxed out. Yes his backhand was great, but he lost other weapons. His forehand wasn’t as good as the mid 2000s, nor was his speed, & most of all, his fitness was lacking to the point he couldn’t even play a full season.
@ST-ek6lf

he kind of ssacrificed his forehand compared to 2006-2008 his prime to get extra edge on his backhand. I wish he switched his racket sooner to get extra GS titles. He was surely the best player ever to walk on this earth. D? who ?

His backhand was never bad at all. Probably top 5 also. He just didn't produce as many winners with it before 2017. But his slice was powerful and very solid, his top spin backhand was defensively pretty damn good. Yes, there were players with better backhands, but it was not "weak" at all. Obviously, his forehand, serve, volley, and half-volleys were out of this world.

as i say disgusting that for that year - his " heading for retirement year " - he decided to make his final statement for his legacy and for those who respond to the elegance of his style, they were given a final gift. we can guess he was recieving the most modern and expensive medical treatment, but he still had to do his part. Lance Armstrong - a lot of racers were doping - but he is correctly erased from the history books because of his disgusting lying and attacks on the truth. thank god he was deep-sixed. a moment of justice in a sea of iniquity.

Tennis will never see this again. Federers reactions, handskills, footwork, tennis intelligence, placement, angles, spin variation, improvisations only one man on the scene with a two handet BH names Carlos alcaraz has the ability to stun the crowd consistently like Federer did.. Rune i would tell. If he first gains full momentum in his career. Rune too. Sinner is the best right now, but he is like the improved agassi/Berdych type. Magicians this level is rare.

it's terrible to say, but NEO federer is a legitmate description. the most obvious change was he started to concentrate on his backhand and --- sure enuf his backhand started to be feared as much as his forehand. he also upgraded his racket. in numbers of these highlights he is not just hitting the lines, he is hitting the OUTSIDE of the lines. utterly disgusting that federer was still humiliating opponents and exciting crowds at his age. the commentators are known for hyperbole, but they can praise every federer shot he makes and they will be safe and true.

2017 was perfect Federer, he finally solved the backhand problem against Nadal. Too bad he was already 36 years old, wish he had found this form 10 years earlier.

There is no comparison, Federer's technical prowess over every other competitor is how he lived, won and lost. He lost to Djokovic on his own terms in these later years. Simply the greatest player of all time.

A tragedy for the lovers of epic matches that Novak was injured that year

Federer is the greatest of all time. Just look up head to head Federer vs Djokovic when Federer was 30 years old and younger(the prime years) Djokovic only has more grand slams because he's the most flexible player of all time to extend his high level well into his 30's. But most grand slams does not equate to highest peak level. Nadal is second. Djokovic is 3rd. To those who disagree, sorry, it's the truth

Ur theory is as flawed as ur logic...Ur Federer beat a teenage Nole in his prime and that too Nole even before his prime gave tough fights to RF...In 2011 he beat him 4 times but u Fedturds would pick the Solo FO win against him....Nole is better than Nadal who is better than Federer......Noles prime is far better than any of Feds prime...Even in 2018 when Nole was at his Weakest and making a strong comeback still managed to beat ur idol at Cincinnati where he had lost to him on previous occasions...Nole > Nadal > RF, Sorry to u losers who disagree that's just the fact

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Federer has a lead on Djokovic when Nole was 18(4-0). Then Nole started beating him regularly till he closed the gap and passed him. Nole started beating Roger in slams in 2008(Roger was 26) . You can look at it yourself self. With 5 full year with no competition Roger never being able to achieve what Nole and Rafa did, but as usual Roger's fans have no clue. The truth 😂😂😂 really?😂😂😂😂

@@Nostalgic14-zo3pk Lol!!! It's just so easy to destroy everything you said simply because of the fact that you don't look up statistics. Its funny you list stats the year Federer turned 30... Fact : The average pro tennis player in the top 100 is 27 years old. Djokovic hit top 100 when he was 18. The majority of professional tennis players retire at the age of 30. That's another fact..... So if you look at the record of Federer vs Djokovic before the year 2011 when Federer turned 30. Federer completely annihilates Djoker.... 13-6.... LOL!!!! Djokovic had 11 years to try to get a winning record before Federer turned 30 and he just couldn't do it. In tennis that's called dominance when you win 2 out of every 3 times you play someone. What this shows is Djokovic only has a winning record against Federer after Federer has entered retirement age of the vast majority of players. It's called physiology, when youth starts to leave you in such a physically exhausting sport. Novak only surpassed Roger head to head in 2016, when Roger was 34 and Novak was 28...34 years old is an old man in the pros playing someone at 28 in their top prime..... Go home, you just got completely destroyed... LOL!!!

Funny seeing Berdych there, for someone who was actually quite a good player, I can't think of anyone with a more appalling record against the big three than him, haha. 4-20 vs. Nadal 3-25 vs. Djokovic 6-20 vs. Federer
