For anyone here who just wants to know the battery life: around 8 hours with average use (16:59).
@DesignInNature7 жыл бұрын
That is a little optimistic. It depends on what you mean by "Average Use". I just bought mine and I'm in the process of testing the battery life with actual continued, uninterrupted use. I'm forcing myself to type large documents and view some educational videos here and there. So far, I've been using it for 4 hours straight, and my battery is down to 44%. I guess I can expect it to give me a solid 6 hours of work, before I have to worry about data loss, due to the battery dying on me. In my case, I bought it for use in university and while I study away from home in coffee shops and the library. I have 15 days to return it for a full refund, if it does not live up to my expectations. So far, so good. If I get about 6 hours of actual use on one charge reliably, it means I can carry it in my bag all day long and still use it for several hours in the evening before having to charge it again. If so, it's definitely a keeper for me. The only annoying thing I've found so far, is that when I close it and it goes to sleep mode while watching a youtube video and then open it again, the video's audio will play, but the video window will stay black. It's just a minor annoyance, and it's fixed by refreshing the page. But still, this kind of stuff never happens on my other devices.
@billybob300c27 жыл бұрын
Lisa doesn't explain how she tests battery life on the products she reviews, so I'm guessing she keeps it on the default battery settings (balanced in this case). Assuming your surface is on balanced as well, which is giving you roughly 6 hours, you could probably pull off 8 hours by putting it on ultra low settings (battery saver, choose all low power options in power saver, reduced graphics, turn off usb charging, airplane mode, etc.). Instead of letting your surface sleep, you can put it on hibernate to save more power, and since it's an SSD, you can instantly turn it on in a matter of seconds.

@DesignInNature7 жыл бұрын
How come? How old is it? And more importantly: Did you get the i7 model? That's the thing with ultra portable devices. If you go for the most powerful processors, then you can expect less battery life for sure. I have to say that the new Kaby Lakes processors are a VERY nice upgrade. They are more power efficient. That being said, I still would not buy the i7 model, due to the reduced battery life vs performance issue. I feel pretty content with my i5 model so far. No need to despair with your older surface pro 4, though. If you still enjoy the device and really need it on the go, you can always buy a portable power bank from Amazon, or best buy. The modern ones are almost as small as my phone, and give your device about two full charges. That would bring you up to about 6 hours of use. Better yet, some of the new power banks have splitter cords that allow for both charging the power bank and your device at the same time. This way you can leave your device charger at home, and just take the portable charger with you. I don't feel the need for one with my new surface pro 2017 - SO FAR. But as with any ultra portable, I'm sure I'll be using a portable power bank at some point in the future. I'm the type of person who loves studying at my local library, or at starbucks. And I simply don't want to have to wait and fight for the seats close to the outlets. These power banks are small enough to not even notice them in your bag. Putting a small power bank on the table next to my surface pro, just looks like I'm using a portable hard drive. There's no need to feel left behind. The Surface Pro 4 is still a very good device to own in 2017. I've owned laptops (Toshiba Satellite) that never gave me 2 full hours of battery life, even right out of the box. I hope this helps.

Great review! The pricing is ludicrous! They should have to continue to include the pen for these outrageous prices.
@clouds57 жыл бұрын
Pricing is my only issue with the surface line. I got my SP4 for 800$ including the pen&keyboard which was a very nice deal. The smallest model of course. That's a good price for what you're getting from my point of view. Over 1000 is just too much when you look at the features and what the competition offers. Really depends on your budget/needs though.
@zebbleganubi7237 жыл бұрын
they would have to raise the prices even more if they were to include the pen and the keyboard. its not like they were giving the pen away for free last year. microsoft arent that generous unfortunately. besides that, if somebody doesnt want or need the pen then they will still have to pay for it if its included.
@eonotekaumaiwa46257 жыл бұрын
why do people all of a sudden complain about the pricing that much? you don't get the pen anymore but the actual tablet went down 100$ from last year which means that it comes down to about the same price as last year.... sure it's not cheap by any means, but that shouldn't be a surprise with the surface line...
@JK-xz1lt7 жыл бұрын
The pricing didn't actually go down. If you look at the base model it is a bit a cheaper, but it never came with the pen to begin with. It's $799. The next model is suddenly $200 more, same pricing as last year but without the pen. You'll be paying through the teeth to make it a complete laptop.

Finally - FINALLY - a real review! Thanks so much, Lisa! My company uses SurfacePro 4's (not the 2017 model) and adoption patterns are pretty unique. The device makes a very good laptop replacement (I actually gave up a Lenovo ThinkPad for my SurfacePro) and those that approach the device from that aspect are pretty happy. Those that approach it from the perspective of a replacement for their iPads tend to be disappointed - the size, weight and heat generated tend to put them off and they want their iPads back. Where the SurfacePro line has real problems is fragility - we had so many devices break from innocent drops or falls that iPads easily survived that we had to put out a warning to our teams to handle them differently than they do their old iPads. Broken screens are the #1 issue. Still their very good devices and your review has me thinking... hmmm.

I have the i7 16GB 512 model. Super easy set up with Cortana leading the process through voice control. No facial recognition issues for me. Display is improved. Brighter with noticeably improved contrast and color. Speakers are noticeably louder with slightly deeper bass. Pen is significantly improved. The tilt feature for shading is fantastic. Fans don't seem to kick in as often. Here's the best part for me: Battery life! I'm averaging about 2 1/2 hours more compared to my similarly equipped SP4. I'm getting about 7 1/2 hours of moderate/heavy productivity with 60% brightness. The improve battery life alone makes the upgrade worth it for me. Awesome!

Decided to upgrade to the Surface Pro from a 2009 17 inch MacBook Pro. Wow, I'm shocked at how friendly the PC has become. Viewing tennis matches has been quite a surprise. If I give the SP a 10, then the Mac gets a 4. It's faster, way kooler, and that screen just makes everything better.
@N12Gautam7 жыл бұрын
That's not a fair comparison, you are comparing almost a decade old device with something that came out a month ago. If you wanted a device to view tennis matches, you would have been better off with the iPad pro, nothing can come close to its display and better battery life.

It does look to work like a nice Wacom, and with of course more internet features and NOT so big to carry around. How do they last? I wanted to know something, should I get the SP4 (Surface Pro 4) with i7 16gb ram/256gb or SP5 (Surface Pro 2017) with i5 8gb ram/256gb. I mainly need more BATTERY LIFE, according most other reviews they say that the SP5 has almost 50% more battery life than the SP4. But the SP4 has a cooling fan in it but the SP5 doesn't will that make a difference in battery life, and does the lack of "cooling fan" in SP5 cause it to throttle in high intensive tasks? And SP4 with i7 and 16gb ram mean it will get more battery life than the SP5 with it 8gb ram?

Beautiful design and I went from a MacBook Pro 2016 to a Surface Pro 4 and was eagerly awaiting this SP. However, Win 10 is still not stable e.g. you highlighted that you are having issues with the Hello feature. With the recent price drop of the entry level MBP 13", there is now very little price difference once you add the keyboard. I went back to the new MBP 2017 model and loving it again. As a consumer, I should not have to mess around with software or hardware, it should 'just work'. Lisa, once again, a well balanced review. Thank you.

I like the iPad Pro, don't get me wrong: it's brilliant at what it is. Everything it can do, it does very, very well. But I am getting into the phase that it's limiting what I can do by design. The best part of it was the Apple Pencil + iPP combo, and it was unmatched experience (outside of crazy priced Wacom Cintiqs that is). In Q3 2016 Microsoft had 1024 pen pressure levels and no tilt functionality and ~40ms of lag. Q2 2017 Microsoft introduces 4096 pen pressure levels and tilt, and ~20ms of lag - that's not just catching up, that is on par with industry leaders (including iPad Pro solution). Apart from drawing, taking notes and painting, add here an ability to work on motion graphics, 3d sculpting, ability to add external displays and whatnot - yeah, its good. I am willing to pay $2k for a surface book (that will be hopefully updated) to do, well, anything. I am talking about the surface book and not the surface pro because it is more powerful. I just need that more power.

I need to buy a 2 in 1 laptop as soon as possible. and i really like the Surface pro 2017. but i'm afraid because it doesn't have usb type c and in 2 years it might be too old compared to other laptops having usb type c. So should i wait for the next surface pro? Or should i buy another 2 in 1 like hp spectre or lenove yoga 920?? Hope you guys can help

I don't know if it's due to an update or not, but the SP 2017 I bought about a month ago is AMAZING where facial unlocking is concerned. It doesn't matter if I'm wearing my glasses or not, wearing my cap or not...even in the dark! No complaints at all about that. The only bit of weirdness I've encountered is how it works with my Edifier bluetooth speakers. Changing the volume on the Surface has no effect at all unless I turn the volume to zero, then the sound is muted. But anything above zero is treated as 100% volume. So I have to control the volume on the speakers themselves. That one quirk aside, this version of the Surface Pro is truly great. Fast, quiet, great battery life, wonderful screen. and just beautiful.

Would this be great for a photographer/videographer such as myself? Will it handle photoshop or video editing apps well?

Hi Lisa, how to get 8 hour battery life? I only have 6.5 hour of office working at half brightness.

Re Pen in the box: When did MS start including the pen with the SP4? I ask as I purchased a SP4 i7/256/8 from a Microsoft store on release day back in October 2015 and the pen was extra.

Does the body get heated up while charging? Or rather is it supposed to?
