The sound discussion is stupid. This car is a screamer and will outperform the 981 (no offense guys) in a heartbeat. This is one amazing machine, and a casual drive thanks to Porsche of Westwood (and it was casual) doesn't begin to explore its capabilities, and there are many. This car accelerates to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and clips the quarter mile in 12 seconds. It is lightning quick around the Nordscheife, and has achieved a top speed of 186 in Automobile Magazine testing on the Autobahn. This paragraph from Car and Driver's review says a lot: "Reducing cylinder count and turbocharging will always change the engine sound in ways enthusiasts don’t love (ask any Formula 1 fan about the latest-generation cars), so we must be forgiven for this fine whine. But it’s an essentially pointless argument. Ignore those itching to pick a fight with, “It just doesn’t sound like a Porsche.” Drive a 718 Cayman S for three minutes and there’s no question it’s a Porsche. So that noise you hear? That’s what this Porsche sounds like. It’s not as if some treasured heritage rests solely in the sound of six cylinders deployed pancake-fashion. The 944 and 968 Turbos were four-cylinder forced-induction Porsches; the 356, 914, and 912 were flat-fours. If a 911 doesn’t sound like a 928 that doesn’t sound like a Cayenne, so what? Soon, you will see Porsche releasing their Mission E, and this electric car will be quiet but remarkable. If you want "noise," buy a muscle and stay away from Porsche. Porsche is performance, and acceleration and handling top the list.

Pablo, I do not understand your question. If you are referring to sales, the cost of the car has significantly increased. A 718 Cayman S PDK with full performance capability is $100,000. A loaded version: $140,000. The car is not within reach of everyone's budget. Even at this price, it's the best overall performing mid-engine car in the world.

It's quite interesting. I've saw many videos of the new Cayman / Boxster with the new flat-4 engine and I must say this video has brought me a new point of view to this. It's sounds quite good actually, I thought it sounds really crappy. As you said in this video, it sound more like this old air cooled 4 flats and that is really cool. I have not driven this car so far or any of porsche with the new 4-cyl engine, I'm quite interested now, how does it feel for real... Thanks for bringing this vid on youtube.

I test drove the 981S and 718S ! Bought the 718S as my last car was turbocharged (Audi B5 RS4) and I am used to a turbo car. Absolutely love it had it a year now 9k miles and 3 track days including Spa in Belgium 🇧🇪

Best car you can get. I had a regular Cayman as a loaner best gas mileage and super easy on fuel. Mpg is 32 max and less than 25 to fill it up

I own a 718 Boxster S (6-speed manual with Porsche Sport Exhaust) and a 981 (PDK) which I am now selling. Love both but the 718 S is the one that I want to drive. It is much faster and better looking. I chose the 6-speed manual for more driver interaction with the car. It is a rocket that corners like a go-cart. The 981 sounds great and the 718S sounds good especially when in Sport mode (more pops and crackles). The 718 does everything better. Go test drive one - you will be thrilled.

11:49 is what we watch for .. the downshift to 6k revs going into a sweeping corner to reveal grip levels under power that are only characterizable as "idiot proof"!

Honestly after having just had a weekend in a 2006 Boxster S and loving the sound, is have to say the transmission is a much bigger deal breaker then the engine. All these comments below and no one mentioned that. I'd take a 4 cylinder manual over a 6 with PDK anyway, but I'd rather have a mansion in the hills, err I mean a flat 6 with stick shift since you can make that happen, just not new anymore. I'm glad that people still buy real Porsches and not just SUVs, but saddened by the number that just don't want to really drive one.

I have to admit I'm not getting the hate for the engine sound. Is it the same as the more recent flat sixes? No, but as noted here it sounds awfully similar to the older air-cooled sixes. I rather like it. Good video and thanks :)

Sound...Sound?? Well how's the radio? LOL. At 2-3k rpms I want my car quiet so I can hear the radio. At 6000 rpms on the track I want it to howl or (at least growl in this case) Given the performance seems like it will be a great HPDE car. Overall, appears to be a solid improvement over the 981, notwithstanding the shock of the F4.

I would happily give up the straight line benefits, the torque, the fuel efficiency... for that linear dependable sweet sounding and fun to wring out flat 6. The 981 Caymans were no joke, they were fantastic in their own right. The 718 is even better on paper for performance but it gives up something important which has been discussed to death already. 981 all day. Unless and until they figure out a really amazing exhaust for that flat 4. Even then I'd think 10 times about it

nice video but sorry Porsche that new engine is like from WRC rally. The new engine performance is certainly good and doesn't sound so bad but no matter what they do it still sounds like a Subaru engine(4 flat cyl. boxster typical sound). It's lots it's identity. It looks like they went to great lengths to alter the engine sound - sport exhaust option+ active valve but it just sounds worse(imho). What a big shame. The S version sounds even worse. I'm sure it drives nicely and it feels special to drive one but , I'll be buying the Boxster 981 6 cyl. instead. my god, im not even kidding when i say the sound literally hurt my ears. I have, i guess, a more advanced audio set up than most, and it literally vibrates the heck out of my table and my eardrums to the point that I felt pain...what an unpleasant frequency. Definitely not regretting my GTS buy.

When its a car I'm unfamiliar with, I always just engage them manually. I see too many folks driving around with just DRL's so for me its just a sanity check that they are ON and I consciously made that decision. necessary? maybe not.

Cool, thanks - I was actually thinking the same reason but opposite logic - I see too many people driving with just DRL's even on cars with Auto headlights. That tells me that they manually switch off the lights because it wouldn't happen in Auto mode.

I hear you. On my Maxima the auto lights are pretty intelligent. They turn themselves off even when I have them turned on manually to save the battery. On our beach car, we have an old Impala with DLR with autolights. However, when the lights do come on at night, only the DLRs come on along with the tailights. You have the manually pull the knob out for the regular headlights. GM made a poor design decision on the 2003 Impala (the V6 is decent for the most part)
