MotoMan drives the 2017 Porsche 991.2 - the Porsche 991 with the TWIN TURBO 3.0 Litre flat six engine. In the Mendocino National Forest - the California Redwoods because Porsche disturbed the applecart of it’s pecking order - one steeped in over 35 years of history: A turbo in a Porsche 911 is the pinnacle of that 911. So now, MotoMan goes on a bit of a different quest than usual to answer three questions: Does sound like a Porsche 911? Does it deliver power like a Porsche 911 and most importantly, does it still drive like a Porsche 911?

Forty years ago I bought into the bargain Porsche 924. It handled very well and was torquey...but...it was noisy inside. I had to retrofit a power boost unit to even hear my 'tunes' over the engine. That was important because I used this as a long-distance touring machine. The engine sounded fine up to a point in my journey...but I wanted more tunes over a multi-hour Interstate romp. Now I own a Subaru with a flat four--I have owned three of them. And I have driven flat sixes. Put me down for the flat six, full time four-wheel drive iteration of the Porsche brand. It probably makes little practical touring difference unless you like to drive in hilly country, where the six really helps. Power sags on the four unless you are a decent driver and put your foot in it when you see the challenge coming up. As a 'touring' driver, I like livable decibels and the best combination of acceleration, braking and all-weather handling I can buy. Hey...comfortable seating is also a big plus because I like my motoring fun to come in large doses. Thanks, MotorMan for this series of reviews--where other online motor pundits only have time for one, too-short summary version!

Knowing that the Turbos were coming on all new 911 models except for the 911GT RS. I Purposely purchased a 2016 911 GTS rear wheel drive only. Last of the naturally aspirated engines for this year and on. So happy I did! Love that 3.8, 430 hp engine music and the fast shifting PDK!

i've owned a 911 C2S 997.1. I really enjoy the 3.8 NA engine. unadulterated engine sound with a linear power band. You can never hide turbo lag completely and the sound the turbo engine makes isn't as great as the NA counterpart. As far as the name, i'm ok with 991.2. I probably need to get a 991.1 in the near future to hold on forever.... or maybe a boxster GTS or cayman GTS...

Great video by you Moto-Man!!! I wanted to provide an update: Going from the 997.2 to the 991.1 Porsche made a significant change by extending the wheel base 10cm basically moving the engine forward by 3.937 inches. Plus reducing weight over the 997.2 and lowering the car another 10mm. This was a move to enhance handling. Then in the 991.2 Porsche moved the engine forward another inch or 2.54 cm which is a total change of 5 inches toward a mid-engine compared to the 997.2. That is hugely significant in performance handling while adding 4wheel steering. I have owned 17 Porsches & 9 Corvettes. I have seen the most significant change in performance in the 991.2. I currently own a 2019 Turbo S 911.2: I bought the last of the 991.2 as opposed to the 992 Turbo S because the 991.2 still allows me to shift gears with the console stick as opposed to looking at a Norelco shaver. No doubt the 992 performs better but no manual allowed in the Turbo S and then they took away the ability to shift at the console. That was a deal breaker!!! I am trading in my 60th Anniversary Corvette 427 (which is a convertible 6spd manual with ZR1front end/suspension & ZO6 engine) for a 2022 718 SPYDER.

Also a 991.1 S Cab owner with the 3.8 NA and PDK. Previous to this I had a 997.2 4S (non-cab). The 997.2 was the best car I've ever owned, and my only mistake was getting it as a 4S (awd) as opposed to the RWD as it was meant to be. The 991 cab is a beautiful car, but the 997.2 was much more raw... some of it because it was a coupe and more rigid. Can't imagine the turbos on a smaller displacement motor, feels like it would take a good bit away from the acceleration metrics of the car. That being said, I'm sure it's one generation more polished than the 991, and I noticed that it has Apps on the nav (apple and google car). That stuff is great, but my $25k Hyundai also has that stuff. Buy the 991 for driving dynamics, not sure if the turbo setup fits the bill. May have to go Cayman in the future, or go back to a 997.2 when I'm all done with my current 991. Then again, I used to think that the PDK was sacrilegious and now wouldn't buy a Porsche without it.

In my humble opinion, by switching to a smaller 3.0 engine but with the help of the twin turbo, Porsche will let any new lucky owner of this new generation 911 Carrera with a lot of low end torque !!! That is equals with a more brilliant car getting even better !!! And if you could afford to add a rear wheel steering to it, then you can have the ultimate 911...Yet !!! :))) I would love to own one !!! Very indeed !!!

Porsche 911 used to be a car for good drivers. Buy a 911 without the requisite skill; pay the price. Now it's almost the opposite, nothing else this fast is this easy to drive. These base turbos take that experience even further. No longer must one have timing or rhythm when shifting. No need to rev to anywhere near redline, go ahead and shift whenever, pretty much doesn't matter. Power feels kinda like a modern turbo BMW, like it more than I thought I would.
@anshulmehra2148
@anshulmehra2148 8 жыл бұрын
I think they should drop the name "Carrera." Carrera has always represented a car with an engine that really starts to produce torque in the high end of the RPM range. With this model with the turbochargers, that's no longer the case. Something more fitting might be the 911 Turbo C or some other designation that represents the small block nature of this engine compared to the traditional Turbo/Turbo S.

Great review. About the nomenclature, I would leave it as is. The 911 Turbo S name is world renouned, every car enthousiaste knows what it is, what it represents and respects it. In respect to the Carrera & 4s, now that it is turbo powered is only a sing of the times. Let’s not mess up the Porsche branding like AMG has done since 2015. Now AMG is slapping the AMG Logo on everything they make just to get sales. The branding is now a joke among car enthousiaste. IMHO, the fact that Porsche has left the monenclature as is is proof of the greatest respect for their customers. Understandably, I don’t think a 911 TURBO owner would be too pleased to see Turbo badge on every model.

Very cute! 911 Baby turbo. 😼 Another interesting review from yiou MotorMan. I'm from the 80's era. Class of 85'. When I bought my first 911 at the dealership. There was a 993 or 996 just came out. I choose to get the 996 because it was a modern new 911. But i realized it was a big mistake. Should of got the 993. Soon I bought a 997S for replacement. Because I love the 993 design but more modern. Now I got the most visceral 997 model which I got a 997.2 GT3 RS. Quite a good visceral feel sport car. Perhaps I should keep this one for a little longer. So, I want to know which model of 911 would you get MotorMan ? Which one is your favorite?

It's already out there....991.2. This way of designation ".2" has been in existence as a result of computer applications. It's not going away because it is simple to understand. The car is a 2017 Porsche 911 S. The secondary designation is "991.2" and this evolved from the general public. Porsche does not officially call this car a, "991.2." They have their own way of referring to it within the company. But as far as the public goes it's, "991.2." Good luck turning the tide around.

is it worth the extra 30 thousand or so extra for a Turbo over a fully loaded Carrera 4S?

the big Turbos are fast! if you like that sort of high, then they are bargain basement supercars. you have to get into big Ferrari territory for that kind of performance, ay about double the price, i assume

He didn't initially call it the 911 but a 901 till Peugeot complained that was their deliniage so had to change it to a 911.

You certainly appeared to ''enjoy'' the Lexus LC a bit more than this generation of 911. After owning two 911's, I can certainly say that ''I'' now prefer my LC. Porsches have lost their emotion while Lexus has just gained it by fitting the ''mamamia'' naturally aspirated glory 5.0L into the chassis it deserved.

I owned two Porsches so far. My very first car, a 914 and later I owned a 944 which was great. I would just ditch the dot for a dash and call the new 911 991-2. This gives it a more German industrial ring than a dot which refers too much to the web culture which may have been intended...Keep it simple. I also never very much liked the idea of giving cars real names like Panamera, Cayenne etc. Ach ja, die Turbolader!
