2017 Yamaha TMax DX Scooter Review
In this video I take a first look at the Yamaha flagship "Maxiscoot" the TMax DX. This luxuriously appointed 500cc machine is a scooter that has more in common with a conventional motorcycle in terms of its engine architecture. In this review I look at its riding characteristics as well as it's unique motorcycle like features. STay tuned!

I have always had big bikes, and never even looked towards scooters. It was until a week ago, when my wife and I went to Amalfi coast and rented a villa in a small village called Praiano. I have quickly realised, the only parking space for a car is my own driveway, it was next to impossible to find parking elsewhere. Then walking around I have noticed a scooter hire shop, and got 125cc Honda. This thing is so great in local road conditions. I can go anywhere and park on the doorstep :)) and it is faster, as roads are extra narrow, cars have to wait to let each other through. Also this area is on a mountain slope, and two up this thing easily going up stop hill doing 35-40 mph. It is impressive. Definitely considering of buying a maxi on return home, to use as handy run around. There is quite substantial under seat storage, enough to fit two helmets and gloves, or a shopping bag... I would say, I am impressed by this type of machine :)

This review has totally changed my mind about buying a BMW RT1200 touring bike. After a spell from bikes for about 5 years I’ve noticed how popular these are in London. With your knowledge of riding all kinds of bikes, I think I’ll definitely get one of these after such a wonderfully informative review. Many thanks.

I`ve been riding scooters since a got my licence in 2000. Started with a yamaha majesty 125 and that thing made enjoy scooters much more than any Motorcycle I`ve owned. Its just so much simpler: No gears, no chain, your whole body is protected from the wind and you can ride it like a boss with your feet forward. And the japanese modding scene with t-maxes are just awesome:)

As always, an excellent review. I've owned several big scooters over the years. First was a mark 1 Burgman 250' then two majesty 400s and currently I have a Burgman 650. They really are the most practical do-it-all machines. The big Burgman has the best luggage capacity and fairing for touring and is supremely comfortable.

A little while back I had a new Xmax just to get to work on. This was my first motorcycle after an 8 year break from them, (lost my confidence a bit). Loved it AND it gave me confidence to get back into "proper powerful bikes" again. Never looked back since - just wish I'd kept the Xmax as a winter hack! Good review again, as ever etc.. Mike. I had a 650 Burgman about 10 years ago and it was fantastically comfortable and off the line was pretty spritely, which the Yam seems even better at. I've also got an MT10, but don't go thinking it'll have that sort of acceleration, as it just won't, but these big scooters are real fun and so practical.

TMF; Excellent review, intelligent and non bias. My own feeling is there is some long standing bad feeling towards scooter riders. The service costs for these machines is a factor (as for any other). I live in rural Wales so dealer accessibility (for service support is an additional consideration); As I approach 60 years old and a lifelong biker and these past 14 years daily rider, the weather protection, luggage capacity and ease of use appeal. 2018 will see me switching to either the TMAX or XADV.

These are the future no doubt, I often think motorcycles are going into decline just because its the older generation buying them, so manufacturers need to appeal to a wider demographic of rider. I would be happy to sell my 1250 bandit and have one of these.

Couldn´t agree less. It´s precisely the old bikers the ones buying these expensive maxi-scooters for convenience after having ridden all kinds of bikes previously. Younger people buy either small cheap scooters for the city or proper exciting sport bikes. I´m in my 40s and in no way I´m going into scooters for now. I actually want a 1290 KTM or a BMW S1000XR ! :)

Been a biker for almost 21 years, and after a test ride, I have just picked up a 2006 Majesty 400. So far I have been very impressed, and I am not really sure why I didn't get one years ago (other than the stigma surrounding them), as it has everything a normal bike has. Mine has 90% of the T-Max performance, but weighs so much less. Has more room under the seat, too!

I had a Yamaha TMax 500 and it is a wonderful machine. Now I have a Suzuki Burgman 650 Exc. and there is not much difference between them. The Burgman is more comfortable and has more power and a lot more luxury stuff. But the TMax feels more like a motorcycle. And yes I can ride a real motor...so not to worry I have also a Suzuki GSX. But the comfort is terrible. Ok it is very fast but it takes a lot of effort to get to your cruising speed. And is it really fun riding over 200k/hr..With the Burgman it is a matter of 7 sec for 100k/hr. And it easily cruises 150 km/hr even with 2 persons. But that is not allowed in Holland so who cares about topspeed? The Yamaha TMax is very expensive and I would not buy one for that matter. I stay with my Burgman. I love it.

They are lovely machines, they get a bad rap from 'real bikers' and for the fact that they are used _a lot_ for crime in London. Many years ago I used to ride an Aprilia Atlantic 500 which is a similar (for the time) scooter. I loved it, very good for commuting in London. I can always spot a biker when they ride a scooter as they only ever use the front brake. I _would_ consider this Scooter over my current Honda DCT 700, the only problem is that it'd be pinched within minutes here in London..

The bike is big, heavy and feels unsafe whenever one comes to a stop, I'm taking it back after less than one day and 5km of ownership. The TMAX 530 has always been my first choice, I should've listened to my head, not my heart. I currently ride a PCX150 and love it, just not on the motorway.

I read your review of the XMAX 300 and for the price it seemed to tick a lot of boxes. Now having seen this review it just cements my opinion of the versatility of a maxi-style scooter. I've recently ordered an XMAX (sadly the TMax was just too expensive for me). You're reviews of these 2 mid-sized scooters has left me feeling that you are truly impressed with them as a practical and enjoyable means of transport. This begs a question for you. Would you consider replacing one of your current bikes from your garage with a maxi-style scooter (not necessarily a Yamaha, but maybe the BMW C400GT or something similar)? If so, which bike would have to go? :-)

I’m facing a reality that I don’t care for with permanent nerve damage in my back progressing to the point of having to make some changes if I want to continue riding. My reality is now limiting my mobility and ability to swing a leg over and through may be the answer instead. Going to have a go at a Piaggio mp3 500 soon enough see if that will help out with its ability to stay upright when stopped. Really unhappy with what I want to ride and the pain associated with it that has no chance of going away unfortunately. Possibly this would work too with the weight down low. I’m going to have to try one out if they ever send this to the states. Maybe hang on a season see if the Forza 350 makes it here. Whispers of an adv 350 but Honda is terrible at dragging their feet. Understandable the scooter market isn’t exactly on fire in the us but it’s definitely building.

I know the brakes are good as a guy in greece hit his hard and done a 180 rear wheel swung right round how he didn't come off I'm surprised ... mpg I would guess is a lot lower than the xmax 300 and 400

Why did you prefer the X Max 300 to the The Max? I liked my 2011 TMax and still fancy another despite my reservations about seat comfort (weight on cocix) but possible I miss my smaller scoots more. Perhaps they filled a different slot to my BMW boxers, whereas the TMax had an overlap, but wasn't quite as fast or fun...?

Yeah, that is why I prefer the XMax, more in price range at the moment, and especially for what I need from a scooter. Who doesnt love bells and whistles, but the few things it has over the XMax arent worth $4000 and much lower MPG. My undderstanding is the TMax gets around 41? The XMax gets around 71? You then get a little less weight I assume, which is good for me, because I am only 5'7" and 150 pounds, so the bigger/heavier the bike, the more struggle for me.

You mentioned the transmission. About that... This and the similar Kymco AK550 sports scooters have an external belt driving the rear sprockets, like a chain or a conventional belt drive motorbike. I have not read the specs for the Tmax yet, but the Kymco is listed on Kymco's Japanese website as CVT (変速機形式CVT無段変速 - the latter part meaning stepless transmission). That seems pointless to me. I assume it is simply their phrasing of automatic, and that they mean something more like DCT (Honda's series of bikes/scooters). My plan to think about swapping my (almost perfect) 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 650 for a Tmax or AK550 will be scrapped immmediately if I find whichever I am looking at is in fact CVT. It may like the Suzuki Burgman/Skywave 650, in that it has CVT which to a degree can behave like a DCT - you can hold the 'gear' into a higher rev range. Anyway this and the AK550 sure do look tempting to me as I get terrible wrist/hand/palm/knuckle pain and numbness even on the V-Strom, and that's a very smooth bike (for a V). EDIT - in my left hand from clutch work in traffic. Thanks for this video, it's a good review.

I found the T-Max gearth extremely wide and it bothered my hips , I also found I had to lean forward more like a sports bike which bothered my back .Also the seat was rock hard and built in a way that it was hard to do anything with it . Even though it was a good well made bike , the ergonomics just didn't fit me . I've heard that same thing from several owners (U.S.) , one said "I sold it because I just never got comfortable on it" . The T-max might be the best engineered of all the big scooters , but it has the worst ergonomics at least for me . The Silverwing can go the distance , but it's a rattle trap with an old tech CVT . The Burgman 650 has a hard to get to E-CVT that is very expensive to repair . But as far as comfort goes it's the best of the lot and mods are relatively easy to do . In the end it all about YOU and what fits YOU . IMHO any one should spend at least an hour on a bike before he buys it . In closing I do not like the newer Burgman 650's (2013 and newer) , they made just enough changes on them to make them uncomfortable for me . TheReaper!

@@Reaper1947 loved my 2012 TMax but sadly sold it after 2 years as I found it put too much weight on my cocix and due to the width of the engine, the footboards don't run very far back so it wasn't possible to put my feet under me in a motorbike or big wheel scoot (eg Honda SH) style. Still miss the TMax despite having more than one BMW boxer, now wondering about a X Max as the riding position looks a bit better than the TMax, and is sufficiently different in terms of usage and performance than the big bikes I have.

To my opinion, look for a scooter with a seat height of no more than 760 mm. The Tyrannosaurus Rex is at 800 mm. Or: - Take a picture of the seat, side and top, and then show it to a seat maker for modification assessment - Check if the fork legs can be pushed through the clamps, just a few cm, but check as well that the front fender does not touch parts when breaking - Sometimes there are additional ways to lower a bike, such as modified suspension dog-bones, if it has these. It will cost you some $$. But if you can apply some or all of these, the bike will eventually fit you well, which is so much better than tightrope walking on a bike that's too tall.
