This review has totally changed my mind about buying a BMW RT1200 touring bike. After a spell from bikes for about 5 years I’ve noticed how popular these are in London. With your knowledge of riding all kinds of bikes, I think I’ll definitely get one of these after such a wonderfully informative review. Many thanks.

I have always had big bikes, and never even looked towards scooters. It was until a week ago, when my wife and I went to Amalfi coast and rented a villa in a small village called Praiano. I have quickly realised, the only parking space for a car is my own driveway, it was next to impossible to find parking elsewhere. Then walking around I have noticed a scooter hire shop, and got 125cc Honda. This thing is so great in local road conditions. I can go anywhere and park on the doorstep :)) and it is faster, as roads are extra narrow, cars have to wait to let each other through. Also this area is on a mountain slope, and two up this thing easily going up stop hill doing 35-40 mph. It is impressive. Definitely considering of buying a maxi on return home, to use as handy run around. There is quite substantial under seat storage, enough to fit two helmets and gloves, or a shopping bag... I would say, I am impressed by this type of machine :)

I`ve been riding scooters since a got my licence in 2000. Started with a yamaha majesty 125 and that thing made enjoy scooters much more than any Motorcycle I`ve owned. Its just so much simpler: No gears, no chain, your whole body is protected from the wind and you can ride it like a boss with your feet forward. While I'm US based, I just got back from a 1000 mile trip on a Maxiscoot. A burgman 650 to be precise. It's not got as many bells and whistles as the new DX being 10 years older. But they handle 70-90 mph cruising all day with no trouble. Stretched out in the feet forward bagger lounge position. Straight up and down like a standard. Or you can put your toes on the back of the boards and get a slightly sportier position where you can attack backroad curves more aggressively.

As always, an excellent review. I've owned several big scooters over the years. First was a mark 1 Burgman 250' then two majesty 400s and currently I have a Burgman 650. They really are the most practical do-it-all machines. The big Burgman has the best luggage capacity and fairing for touring and is supremely comfortable.

These maxiscooters are a legit style of *motorcycle*. When I sold bikes the dealership hardly let any of their employees ride the inventory so although I've sold a fair number of scooters (Piaggio & Vespa) it was some years before I actually rode one. Looks like a good alternative to a touring bike like an R1200RT because of its comfort levels, luggage carrying capacity and decent adjustable windscreen. In most countries you can only travel at 100-120Km/h on freeways or open roads, so for touring duty, this bike would do it nicely.

I enjoyed your review of the Suzuki Burgman 650 I think it is the benchmark for maxi scooters. These are big powerful scooters that are meant to be taken out on the highways/motorways/freeways and the backroads for a day spent enjoying the scenery. The T Max looks like the next best thing. I am particularly impressed with the vertical movement of the screen. It seems there is more movement than with the Burgman. Although in fairness my Burgman has an after market screen which is wider than the stock screen and therefore gives better wind protection. I think this machine could do with a wider screen. I like the upswept exhaust it gives it a nice look and helps with the lean. Among the more advanced features of this bike which I hope are now available on the Burgman are cruise control, traction control and the ability to access maps. I saw a recent review of the Kymco AK 550 and I not it has built in sat nav you have to be able to hear directions as well as see the turns - I'm not sure how the Kymco deals with this. Does the T Max have some built in speakers so you can hear directions? I am confused by the cruise control on the left handle bar - the throttle/twist grip is on the right. I have a Kawasaki Voyager 1700 with cruise control - it is on the right handle bar. As you note the under seat storage is not big enough for 2 full face helmets a feature of the Burgman. I fitted a top box to my Burgman - it replaces the passenger back rest and cowl. Both these bikes appear plenty powerful and have good transmission. I don't need to fiddle with buttons so I don't use the manual mode or the power button on the Burgman. You mention the mirrors, I like the electrically fold in mirrors on the Burgman - good for lane splitting and also for parking. Thanks for the review.

TMF; Excellent review, intelligent and non bias. My own feeling is there is some long standing bad feeling towards scooter riders. The service costs for these machines is a factor (as for any other). I live in rural Wales so dealer accessibility (for service support is an additional consideration); As I approach 60 years old and a lifelong biker and these past 14 years daily rider, the weather protection, luggage capacity and ease of use appeal. 2018 will see me switching to either the TMAX or XADV.

I had a Yamaha TMax 500 and it is a wonderful machine. Now I have a Suzuki Burgman 650 Exc. and there is not much difference between them. The Burgman is more comfortable and has more power and a lot more luxury stuff. But the TMax feels more like a motorcycle. And yes I can ride a real motor...so not to worry I have also a Suzuki GSX. But the comfort is terrible. Ok it is very fast but it takes a lot of effort to get to your cruising speed. And is it really fun riding over 200k/hr..With the Burgman it is a matter of 7 sec for 100k/hr. And it easily cruises 150 km/hr even with 2 persons. But that is not allowed in Holland so who cares about topspeed? The Yamaha TMax is very expensive and I would not buy one for that matter. I stay with my Burgman. I love it.

It's interesting hearing you say how you struggle to find something negative to say about any given bike you are reviewing. What I personally see is that though there are some occasional issues most of the negative things to say about them are either very minor annoyances or just personal preferences. I think this speaks volumes for the state of motorcycling today that the vast majority of bikes are really quite good and while you will find things that could be better, realistically the manufacturers have got things dialed in. My first "bike" was a Honda Spree scooter (way back in the 80's LOL) and while I personally don't like them and wouldn't have another scooter I can see how valuable they are for some people. The practical features they provide just can't be argued with and it's great to see you giving treatment on scooters for those folks who are interested in them.

Can you talk about breaking? I am use to a regular motorcycle. 1 hand brake for the front and your foot for the rear. Are the 2 hand levers both front and rear brakes? or does 1 brake lever control both front and rear brakes?

As you perhaps remember, I rode the FJR1300AE, however since that awful day back in May when my life changed completely, I am now planning to get back to biking sometime in the future but initially on a much lighter bike. Well enter this beauty! Thank you for your excellent review. Video liked. Ride safe.
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Well certainly a different mount to the FJR1300 but these scoots are still a lot of fun to ride for sure...did you see my D-Max review? Personally I preferred that machine (wasn't trying so hard!) and costs half as much....

Your choice of the D-max over the X-max would be only because of the price?

Nice review! The CVT transmission keeps scooters in a narrow rpm band. Watch the tach as you accelerate to notice this. Kudos to you that you can handle being seen on a scooter. I just picked up a Zuma 125 recently.
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
...except this doesn't have CVT it's more like DCT on some of the hondas, an actual automatic gearbox....

YES, T-MAX ! Good work, Mr. Flyer ! I haven't looked but have you done a review on the Suzuki Burgman 650 ? I would really like to hear your opinion on that.

No I've not, but if the chance arises I'd love a go on one...stay tuned!

I have heard, not sure about the UK, that police can give you a speeding ticket by watching these videos. There is a guy in the US who puts a post-it note over the speedo while he reviews so that he doesn’t have to worry about this issue.
@Cassius_King7 жыл бұрын
I always enjoy your reviews. As this was wrapping up all I could notice was the “face” looking at you -the large circular gauges, the center black piece beneath them and the silver of the handlebars. I’d find it too distracting to ride. An unconventional observation I know but was my impression as I watched your video. Curious if you see this?

I hadn't but now you've mentioned it I probably always will!

Lower the screen down a bit, and the shoulder pull disappears. What was the RPM's at 90mph? I couldn't tell...

I am looking at the kymco ak 550. Very similar looking/ specs but 2-2.5k cheaper. Think it only lacks electric windshield and that is it. I always drove scooters. For me it is my Monday to Sunday vehicle so the practicality of scooters is why I drive them.

Yeah they are fun too....

Nice review! Great mode of transportation around town or commuting, the style and functionality being a matter of personal preference and needs, but I can definitely see the appeal. There seems to be a lever on the left handlebar, possibly a parking brake? It wasn't mentioned in the review. Thanks & keep the videos coming!
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Yes the main lever on the left bar is the rear brake, but I think there was a parking brake too IIRC.....

You're very lucky to have a dealer with a Demo 530DX. My local Yamaha dealer couldn't get me a bike even if I handed over a big bag of cash let alone a demo on one I'll be sticking with my Mk1 T-Max for the time being !

I'm interested in this scooter because currently I own a Honda Forza 300cc and thinking of changing it. However, if Honda were to release an updated luxurious SilverWing I'd consider that.

Good review. Are the Honda X-ADV & Yamaha TMax DX comparable? If so, which would win?
@TheMissendenFlyer6 жыл бұрын
Not really, the Honda is more of a motorbike disguised in a Scootery way....depends what you want to use the machine for as to which wins!

I don’t understand why scooter manufacturers haven’t integrated the parking brake with the side stand like BMW has with their maxi scooters. Too many are prone to falling over especially the Vespa 300’s

Very few comments indicate that the bike is not a popular choice / consideration. I certainly do not ride mine and after 3.5 years the battery has died. Anyone know of a good forum with tutorials on getting the plastic body parts off to get the battery out? Thanks. 2017 530 DX

Too bad it's not available in the United States. Looks like it would be a substitute for my Burgman 650. Love the cruise control

John. I had a 650 Burgman about 10 years ago, they do carry their considerable weight 277kg pretty low down and I loved that bike. However, the Yamaha is only 217kg(which is still 7kg more than my MT10), so a huge 60kg lighter. When we're finished with lockdown, I'm going to see if I can get hold of a demo. bike.

I would love to get one in the future but they are not on the cheap side that's for sure. Especially for a student. May have to look at a used 125cc or so.

Interesting bit of kit TMF. What was the additional lever for on the left hand side of the handlebars? guessing it's a parking brake or similar! Great that you are demonstrating all different sorts of bikes, something for everyone surely! cheers.
