They are "The Real Deal!" They are "so versatile!" They can play on stage with microphones. They can play on a street corner with no microphones. They can be a marching band and March into a crowd with no microphones. They are a "True Talent!" Our big cities have radio stations devoted to specific genres of music. As an old time Dixieland Jazz lover, I've always compared a group's enthusiastic fun with The Firehouse Five Plus Two. Boy, oh boy that Shaye has evolved into a quintessential cornetist. Not taking away from the other members, they’re terrific in their own right. She’s always had the ingenuity and God given natural talent. But her tone, volume and ability to bend notes is a practiced skill. An absolute pleasure to listen to her mastery of her cornet. AND she doesn’t split a note every other attack , like a lot of other brass players.

I love this video. Erika, far from being tired after a long procession, is up on her toes early on. Someone passed a note to Shaye as the band marched. Lacking a pocket, she stored it in her bra. At 1:20 she reads it (probably a song request) and stores it in her shoe. Then she lashes into an emphatic solo. Because she is marching, she doesn't have her mutes, and I like this unmuted Shaye. The drum solo by Robin is also distinctive. The tune is Bouncing Around. Alas, this festival is no more, but we have an exciting memento of it here.

Shaye is certainly multi-talented. Most of us don't even know it all. My curiosity is: Does she improvise sequence of solos, etc. or is such prearranged?
@maddierosemusic4 жыл бұрын
@@shurshot2764 I guess she goes on feel - notice she nods to the clarinet, or tuba or drums... and damn she's good at it! Notice she won't put Tuba and trombone back to back mostly.. pretty cool.
@stevegrooms11423 жыл бұрын
@@shurshot2764 you ask a great question. The best answer, I think, comes from Pops Coffee, the Tuba Skinny expert and jazz band player. He believes Shaye makes decisions on the fly about the solos, using principles only known to her. She of course knows what each performer can do. This version of Bouncing Around is interesting because it is much longer than any of the band's other performances of it, and we don't know how long they played this tune before marching in at the start of this video. Note that Shaye has a different palette of instruments to work with here, for Robin only straps on the snare drum when the band marches.
@dizzyology75143 жыл бұрын
@@shurshot2764 Shaye is a *conductor*, one of the best in the world. Imagine the Berlin Philharmonic directed by Sir Simon Rattle. Have they rehearsed what they're going to play? Damn right they have, down to fine technical details that ordinary listeners would never notice. But what happens when the concert begins? On a good night, at least, the music works on the souls of all the musicians and something unique and unpredicted starts to build among them. Then they watch the conductor, not because he is creating the music or the magic, but to keep the whole thing organized. This is what is happening here. Tuba Skinny rehearses their repertoire extensively, precisely so that in the moment, they have the freedom to go where the music takes them. Shaye isn't running the show by herself, they all are -- and they all know each other and Shaye well enough that by watching her they know what the other musicians are going to do. She uses some specific gestures (hand on head means tuba solo), but those are just signals. The *conducting* consists of seeing what is happening musically and where it can go, and seeing that everybody is onboard. Prepared? Yes. Spontaneous? Yes. A collaborative effort? For sure. Coordinated by Shaye? Yes, and nobody else could coordinate it for this band. Brilliant? Just listen!
