2018 BMW 340i (ZHP) Review: The Perfect Used Baby M3??

The F30 340i with the ZHP package is the latest baby M3 offering! Ok, ok... this week I drove my own car, and yes I'm a little biased to be calling it a baby M3, but these LCI F30's do bring a lot of value to the table for their current market value! Anywhere in the $25k-$35k range, these B58 powered vehicles can both put some serious power down, and provide you with relatively new tech and fairly reliable driving experience. Sure, with an ECU tune and few bolt-ons (we've all seen MK5 Supra content) these can make significantly more power, but the real beauty of the F30 is being able to enjoy a manual shifting rear-wheel drive sports sedan... and this car happens to have the beloved M-Performance Power and Sound Kit, MPPSK, which wakes up both the engine and the exhaust!
I unfortunately opted for the ZF 8 Speed, which I have partially come to regret, however, that transmission combined with the ZHP pack's 'M-Performance LSD' has essentially matched and pre-dated the G20 M340i drivetrain! Not to mention, the ZHP package does make this car 1 of 100 final production year F30's to hit the states, and the only stateside F30's to come with an LSD pre-optioned onto the car. This is a sweet car, and while the steering is a bit lackluster, the car knows how to kick the rear out just enough for some fun, and the aforementioned beast of B58 motor, has just enough power to feel adequate at the very least. Who am I kidding, it's a hell of a driving experience as far as contemporary BMW's go, and it will be missed when the lease ends :/

I don’t know about reliability because the previous 335s had tons of problems, the new 340i engine is very refined and capable and most importantly they were able to eliminate many of the problems the N55 had. So yes I’d definitely go for this 340. This time they were able to make it bulletproof

Ya the B58 seems to really stand out reliability wise! The N55's aren't too bad either (aside from the charge pipe 'Achilles heel') but the N54's caused headaches even when fairly new and we don't need to dive back into the early and mid 2000's motors 😂

Would you still own it past 100K miles? I too love BMWs, they are beautiful cars but its the reliability. I prefer to own my car for a long time into the +200K miles which Lexus can easily get their with regular maintenance. Not so sure about BMWs.

@@Nattymatty7 the maintenance has been nothing for me thus far, but I've heard that B58's are fairly reliable in the long run. The IS would likely be even more reliable off the virtue of NA and the Toyota DNA... but it won't keep up with the 340i performance wise.

Interesting to See how different markets got the f3X 40i series. My f36 440i with less options has a list price of about 75k € here in germany. And i dont have the LSD & HUD. Also Used late 2017/early 2018 models with a similar spec like yours are well over 40k € with low miles. Great car none the less and i love to drive mine every Single day.

Im not kidding when i say that 1/3 to maybe half of the offered used 3/440i are Imported crashed cars from the US.

No idea where you're from or you financial status, but in the UK no one would inside you on this at 17. And if you could find insurance it would probably be something like £10,000-£20,000 per year. Don't want to crush your dreams, but if you've got that kind of money (meaning you're financially better off than probably 80% of the population) then go for it, I would have loved this kind of car at 17!

Wouldn’t sell that either, love the E92, I’m a sucker for a manual LCI comp car with a single hump. I actually used to be all about the double hump back when the e92’s were new... nowadays I want the timeless single... anyway, yes the B58 is a torque monster as compared to your s65, but I’m not sure the car it’s bolted to would justify its benefits over a tactile and more analog bimmer (your car!!) 😎

But for the m2 Comp 6mt and 340i/m340i 6mt the rest seem nearly identical: boring, video games, artificial steering, similar interiors, grossly overpriced/complicated and impossible to repair myself. Sometimes, the most fun Bmw I have or know about is my 2012 128i manual w the competition package. It’s great. So simple.

It felt more composed than the 340i... but unfortunately has the same lackluster steering rack due to the B58’s engine size. It’s the regular G20 330i, which I also did a video on, that really impressed me with its new and improved steering rack

Just recently bought a 2018 with over 20k miles with about 42k ($). It's fully loaded all different packages, just name few important ones, M sport, premium package, keyless, headup display, nav system, h/k sound system, 6WB display cluster....you name it.One major issue is the steering of overly soft feel , unlike my E90. But It's time to take advantage of LCI of F30 with less cost. M sport is must for the front look (otherwise not very aggressive design), sport seats, sport strearing and wheels.

@@slowm240 glad you found one. Be sure to add a strut bar,which will increase the handling of cornering if you have a standard suspension, which is softer comparing to dynamic suspension. This strut bar also increases the feel of steering wheel control, which is also an important benefit. In fact, the standard suspension give you vertical soft ride, whereas the strut bar enhance the rigidity of horizontal stability. Urge you to look into it. So much improvement of handling

Honestly, I'd go for the M240i instead... still get the B58 and newer gen interior, but retain the smaller size and fun of the 1 series. Biggest issue with any F generation Bimmer is gonna be the disappointing steering coming from an E gen car... it's getting much better now with the current G gen though !!

Strange the way BMW specs these out. I would think yours came with the blue Brembos on all 4 corners and summer rubber. I purchased a 2017 340ix m sport with 30k miles. Fully loaded, but without the blue Brembos. MSRP was 57,xxx. Think it must depend on your area for price because I've not seen any 340 in my area for less than 29k. Those 29k cars were mostly non m sport and above 60k miles. Either way, love the car so far.

Thank you! And I know, I was just being dramatic and saying it doesn’t have what some cars have, I know that the stock 340i setup is dual resonator - which a lot of people delete w Dinan midpipes :)

@@Reoniz I like it a lot, I have the normal m sport muffler so it’s a little too quiet for my liking, but the pops are definitely more defined and crisp. Not sure if it would be worth the 600 new but I got mine used for 345. I’m currently debating muffler delete but I’m no sure if that would be unbearable.

That is correct!! Part of the reason I went with the ZHP... couldn’t justify spending all that money after the fact on a lease. Unfortunately the run-flats ruin some of the fun 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ya know that's a hard question to throw a blanket statement on... I'd say sub $100k miles and a generally well taken care of vehicle is always smart with Europeans... but if you have a specific model in mind I can give you more of a specific opinion

What informed your decision to go with a new ZHP 340i instead of an m3/4? Is the reliability that much worse on true M cars? It seems like a small jump in price from the low 60s to low 70s and then you get to say you have a “real” M car even though it’s a stripper spec. I guess your car is more unique and a sleeper though, I wouldn’t expect that kind of sound to come out of a 340i, as a former owner myself.

Well, if I was purchasing I would 100% agree that it would’ve been worth the jump to a stripper F80.... heck I could’ve gotten an M2 comp for about the same money lol. But since I was leasing, both the F80 and F87 were significantly more once you factored in the discounts and incentives I was able to apply to this car. Plus... I still got my little taste of “M” with the LSD and exhaust, at a much lower payment :)

All in all I was able to get about 19% off, this is including dealer discount and incentives combined... that along with the better residuals is what made this an easy choice over the F87, at least financially. The cars were the same sticker, the lease was 45% more per month however :0

Hello. I am in the market for a 340i , what would you say about realiability of this car? I want a fun car, but also a confortable and fun if needed. That is why i would love to buy with the Automatic gearbox and four wheel drive. I think in europe the ZHP is a bit diffrent, the mirros have a little wing? How would i know if the car has ZHP package, usually people that buy this car, change the exterior ornaments (spoilers, mirros...etc) is there any other way to know ?

The 340i’s are pretty sweet! I’m lucky in that I’m leasing from new, and haven’t put on a crazy amount of miles, but so far so good reliability wise. That also seems to generally be the case for higher mileage B58’s! Now on the front of ZHP, I believe they only did the 100 ZHP cars for the US. In Canada however, they had another special edition called the M Performance Edition I believe... which was actually pretty sweet... same MPPSK, carbon goodies, but it actually came with the front splitter that I had to get after the fact, and a much nicer interior with higher quality leather that has never been available in the US for the F30 :/ This car was AWD however, unlike the US spec ZHP that were RWD, and thus it did not have the M perf LSD. Now with all that said, I believe you guys had a similar edition or package in Europe (to the Canadian one) And a car with OEM carbon goodies (no mirror winglets), the MPPSK, and the 20” performance wheels would likely be exactly that. Probably made as a 17 plate! Hope this helps

Tbh, the auto probably suits the car the best, but after spending a bunch of time with the 6spd in Bimmers, I'd have to go with the manual just to enjoy that extra engagement... the fact that you can't get it in the new M340i is only a bonus!

What are your plans when your lease is up? Keep it or move to another car? I currently lease a 2018 340i as well, and the lease is up in April 2022. I don’t know if I want to buy it out or just buy another 340i that is less expensive. I think my buyout price at the end of the lease will be roughly $37K. I’m certain I’d be able to find other 340i’s for far less by the time my lease is up.

You definitely would, and for the same reason, I'd rather buy a used M2 for the buyout than keep this. But to be honest I'm not sure yet, I'd like a 6spd 🤔

but then you end up with someone else’s used car, and you have no idea how much they’ve abused it. I personally would rather pay a little more and keep my own car than roll the dice on someone else’s to save a couple G’s. Unless you’re sure it has been well taken care of and you’re not down grading, and still getting a significantly better deal.

I love your 340i, but this would have been an awesome video if the camera wasn't aimed right at yourself most of the time while the car was in motion. No offense, but I want to see the car, not the poster of the video. It's ashame that so many are doing this now. If this were a POV video, or at least had the camera aimed out the front window showing the dash for the entire driving portion of the video, this and so many other videos would be incredible. Your camera is awesome, so this would have been nice to see.

Yes the ZHP only came in RWD, but you could’ve gotten the MPPSK with an Xdrive car. The auto is definitely faster, but I’ve recently come to find out that the 6spd in these bimmers is REALLY solid 🤷🏻‍♂️
