My 19 Sk1r wheelied off a small crest at 50mph in 5th gear the other day. Just out for a nice leisurely cruise, you can anticipate the small rises and just goose the throttle a bit even at low revs to loft the front end. BMW makes a great machine.

I love this bike. I had the 2018 S1000R. Now traded it in for the coming 2021 S1000R motorsports version. Up to 10,000rpm it’s the equal of the S1000RR. So plenty for roads and twisties.

Great review as usual. I really appreciate very much the way you describe the bikes you review. Taking your time. And also the choices you made in editing your videos. I’m 52 -so a very old man also- and ride a 1090 adventure, great motorcycle btw 😁. Thank you!

Hi Ar, thank you! Ah, so you're my age, then you understand the riding position we "older" guys have with bikes like these...hehe. And the 1090, I think I'd buy the 1090 over the 1290 any day, just because it is really that good of a bike. It is often over looked because of the 1290 and won't even consider the 1090, if they did, they'd buy it. Greeting from Germany!

You look like Don Johnson mate. I was expecting that epic Miami Vice theme to start. Great review mate. I am an ex-Tuono Factory owner. The Tuono is an awesome bike but man the Tuono was more track bike than daily inner city occasional highway thrill. I'd be interested to see if & when BMW will release an updated s1000r in 2019. I hope they do.
@NothingToProve5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gabriel, I think...LOL! Rumour has it that the S1000R will be updated next year. But and this is a big but, right now BMW is having problems with launching the new S1000RR, delay after delay after delay. The engine block had a problem with a hole being drilled or not but that is fixed now but early deliveries of the 2019 S1000RR have to go back to the dealerships and checked to see if they have the good block or bad. And if they have the bad, then the bike has to be sent back to BMW, it can't be fixed at the dealership. Issues like this is why the rumour mill says next year and not this year for the updated S1000R. I agree with you on the Tuono, it is really a great bike, in fact it is my favorite in the super naked group but as a daily and weekend bike, well it's just not so comfortable, with me being over 50 years old. And that is why I own the KTM 1290 Super Duke R, still right there wiht the Tuono and S1000R in performance but more comfortable. Cheers, Scott

Agree with you comment re new Speed Triple v S1000r in respect to low rpm torque. I test rode the ST as a potential replacement for my ‘17 s1000r, but the ST felt less lively. So I kept the s1000r, and will wait for the new version based on the just released s1000rr.

I have a 2019 Bmw s1000r sport as a daily rider for 8 months of the year , I took this over Ktm u mentioned because bmw has a better dealer network here , plus there Is a better second hand market for Bmw compared to ktm if I ever decided to sell it or trade it in , I came from a 16 r1200r to 18 r9t to this having had some problems with the previous 2 but I’ve put up 7800 kms on mine now this year it has been bullet proof so far not 1 problem yet , only problem I have with this bike is it wants to go fast all the time where if you had a R1250R it can do that too but can also cruise around at a slower speed in more comfort , plus this bike is a lot heavier on fuel so I could see myself some day maybe going back to the R 1250 R or RS maybe , Cheers from Ireland

I loved the RS but as I already have an Africa Twin set up for touring I’m thinking of something lighter, faster and more responsive. Not that I have a need to do longer rides on the S1000R but how does she do at interstate speeds in terms of buzz? Heard they can be a little buzzy.

the current tuono factory has a chopy throttle at town speeds and a mine had a lag delay with the throttle as well where youd twist the thing and then moments later it would propel you. plus its heavier and felt slower than the s1000r i use to own. it did feel more planted and it gave better feedback on the far edge of the tyre though. you also cant use the cruise control around town speeds with the tuono. weighing them up i think the s1000r is the best super naked, i wish id never sold it but it did actually loose me my licence...not regretably though as ownership of it was a blast. i traded the tuono for another bmw - an r nine t. its fantastic and doesnt entice me to do those licence loosing speeds

@NothingToProve6 жыл бұрын
Well BMW is supposed (speculation) to update the S 1000 series (all 3 bikes) in 2019 but have only announced the RR, now when the other two bikes (R and XR) will be launched is the question, spring, summer or fall??? I hope it will be spring of course! Will it be worth the wait...can't answer that question but if your looking for a deal then the left-over 2018 is the bike to get.
@pierredupras69065 жыл бұрын
Usable torque and peak torque offer very different riding characteristics. When comparing the torque curves of two motorcycles, a bike with a lower peak torque may actually have higher torque throughout most of the rpm range, thus offering better acceleration and a more satisfying feel. Scott, you may remember riding the Honda NC750s, which has low peak numbers but a very satisfying feel. It offers higher torque at lower rpms than its competitors, which feel dull in comparison. Although this horsepower and torque curve is with the Honda NC700x, it will help you understand how the Honda accelerates better at low rpms, then cuts out early...whilst the competition rpms keep increasing to higher peak horsepower and torque. However, from 1000-5000 rpm, the Honda has more torque and horsepower than its competitors...which makes it easier to get off the line faster, but requires faster shifting.

I have very little experience on the Tuono, something I hope to fix in the next two weeks, I'll do a review of one. Then I can give you a better opinion. Right now, my opinion is that the Tuono is more fun but the S1000R is a more stable platform to ride. But just wait about two weeks for the Tuono RR review 😁 cause the Tuono I was on was a few years (before I started my channel) ago and my memory is not what it used to be and I want to compare a 2020 to a 2020.

I had one of these, little issues with back and the position tried to make it more touring which with the amount of parts bought I think in hindsight was not ok because for a more sporty s1000 sport touring there is the XR! So all in all i think the R has no place in the segment as long as you have the super duke R or the tuono factory. I had the XR and now have a Tuono. Tested the super duke R also what a bike but I prefer the tuono i don’t have the same back issues love the form of the tank quite good for track days love the sound and the feedback from chasis. Ride Black Forest, Alps and track. Done a 1000km ride recently and made no touring mods. I will leave it as is. Great review thanks for posting. How would you describe the difference between this and the new CB1000R you tested. What bike would you pick?
@NothingToProve5 жыл бұрын
I would pick the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100RR. LOL! Seriously though, if I'm going to be 5° to 10° leaned forward, as one is on both of these bikes, I'd get the Tuono. It wins for me in looks and power. But if I want to set up-right I'd get the 1290 SDR, which I've owned for over 3 years now. OK, ok, but these two bikes are different in two main ways, looks and power. Looks the BMW is the classic Super Naked look and the Honda is the Neo/Retro/Classic look, two different looks and I think Honda did a good job on not going to far with the look, just right, IMHO. Power: this is where there is a big difference, the BMW will pull away from the Honda at just about every spot on the RPM gauge. Which would I pick...the BMW moved me in a way that the Honda just didn't while riding it. So I guess the BMW, if I had to choose between these two. Luckily there are more bikes out there...hehe.

Appreciate your videos, respect your opinion.... choosing between s1000r and 1290 superduke r. Can you give me the bottom line on your opinion?
@NothingToProve5 жыл бұрын
Which would I choose between the two? Well, I already have made that decision, I bought a 1290 Super Duke R in 2016 and still own it now and still love it and still would not trade it for the S1000R. The reason is that the riding position is more comfortable, more up-right and more leg room (and V-Twin!). The other reason is simply TORQUE. The SDR has more torque at 4000 RPM than any other super naked at their peek torque. That is fun, real street-able fun, no revving needed to have fun, wheelies on demand at the flick of a wrist. When I decided on the SDR, the question I was answering was "which bike will be the most fun...all the time...on the street". So fun factor was number one on my list and still is today. And I believe that after riding over 40 different motorcycles in the last 10 months of starting my youtube channel, the SDR is still the most fun. I would not trade it for any of them. So really it depends on what you want, fun? track-day weapon? all-rounder? ...etc. Track-day weapon, I would choose the S1000R over the SDR for example...although I'd take the Tuono V4 over the S1000R for a track day weapon :) Hope this helps, Cheers Scott

Very nice review. I recently watched your review on the Triumph STREET triple RS. Apart from the size aspect 1000 vs 765 which did you prefer? I currently ride a 2012 675 street and have been toying around with updating the bike to something modern. So which would you prefer to live with BMW or Street Triple RS.
@NothingToProve5 жыл бұрын
Well, I just rode the 2019 Street Triple RS (4 weeks ago) on the track and it was pretty GOOD! (see my video "Track day on the Harzring") And I was chasing a S1000R most of the time on the track. The RS corners with the S1000R but the S1000R pulls away from it on the corner exits...of course. Riding posture and ergo's are pretty close but the weight is where you can feel that the RS is lighter and with the updated air intake/induction - the air intake sound is awesome! If cost is an issue then go for the RS but if you want more power then of course the S1000R but I believe that BMW will update the S1000R next year so if cost is not an issue, wait and get the next gen S1000R. Or wait till next year and get a left-over 2019 S1000R cheaper! I really don't know which I'd get, that is a tough question. Both bikes are very very good, I have no real criticisms of either. I guess the RS has a little more soul and character than the S1000R, but if perfection is what you are looking for then the S1000R is what you need...of course "it's a BMW". LOL! Cheers, Scott

@NothingToProve5 жыл бұрын
Hi Colonel, heh, I like your name. Two different bikes for two different riding styles. This is a track day weapon that you can comfortably ride on the street, with a focus on performance. The 1250R is a roadster, laid-back, relaxed & comfortable that you would not want to take to a track day, with a focus on...well...what I said in the first part of this sentence. They are both great bikes and both do what they are supposed to do very, very well. Generally I find older guys riding the 1250R and they have come from riding bikes like the S1000R in the past. So which is better, it's hard to compare the two because they don't compete against each other. Sorry, I can't pick between the two, I like them both. Take care, Scott

@NothingToProve5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, thank you. Yes, well more northern Germany. Handling, I'd take the S1000R over the Speed Triple RS on a track day, simply because the S1000R evolved from the S1000RR, which is a track day weapon. I'd even take the Street Triple RS over the Speed Triple RS to a track day. But if you don't do track days, it's a wash. Then going by looks, the Speed Triple RS wins, at least for me.
