Fantastic news Zaranyzerak. The director's edition of Star Trek The Motion Picture is officially coming to Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD in September. Plus Paramount is also releasing a special Collector's edition 4K boxset of Star Trek The Motion Picture Director's Edition called the complete adventure. It comes with an artbook, a poster, some cards, but the big highlight about that set is that it comes with all 3 cuts of the film. You have the 4K remastered version of the Director's Edition, the theatrical cut, and a widescreen version of the Special Longer Version that aired on tv back in the 80s. The Director's cut of Star Trek 6 is now officially getting a 4K Blu-ray release along with the theatrical cut.

Strange that your Galaxy Quest is a region B, UK edition. I'm in the UK and I got a region A version because it wasn't available when I wanted it! Both have the exact same special features and artwork. This is perplexing!

Yep. Forgot because I stopped caring about that franchise after the second one. Well, good for them. So they've got two. Compared to the half dozen or so of the other studios. The point is, they're barely hanging on as a studio. A studio that owns one of the largest SF franchises in history, and does next to nothing with it.

Zaranyzerak I will admit I do own the 10 movie blu ray set with the blue Enterprise on the cover lol...... I got it for cheap though. They did port over the extras(maybe not all) though and I don't have the DVDS except for a few. They could definitely use some upgraded transfers in 4K, these look more like standard HD tv transfers, gets the job done but nothing exceptional.

I would rant about the politics behind the scenes and why National Amusements doesn't get it's shit together and assign specific departments for each of their 3 major companies; CBS, Paramount and Viacom and also admit that they own them. Or after hearing how much they love screwing people over, have NA done away with and have someone else own this terrible triad and quickly before they decide to go ahead with their plans for a Paramount-esque theme park planned to open in the UK in Kent. 'sigh'. Idiots!

The first six original Star Trek movies are officially getting 4K Ultra HD releases along with new remastered Blu-rays in September. Those new transfers of the first six original Star Trek movies that will be on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray will not be dnr'd so they're new 4K transfers done properly.

Yep, I've been talking about those releases quite a bit on the Twitch streams and on the discord. Just wish the Special Longer Version of TMP wasn't locked away in that big expensive set, it's my preferred cut. guess I'll be shelling out for it...sigh. Glad that Paramount is finally doing away with those horrible 2009 transfers and doing them all properly, that is VERY long overdue.

I’ve been waiting for this one. I have a box set which has all 10 of the special edition DVDs of the first 10 movies. I also have the Blu-ray set of the first 10 movies. To me the Blu-rays of the first 10 movies didn’t look as bad as everyone says they do (probably because I’m watching them on a small TV). Though to me the two that looked the worst are The Wrath Of Khan and Generations and not because of DNR. Those two have the worst color timing problems. The Wrath Of Khan has a weird blue tint to it while Generations has a greenish tint to it. I’m going to pick up the new Director’s Cut Blu-ray of The Wrath Of Khan at some point. I also have the Blu-ray complete series sets of The Original Series and The Next Generation. I’ve been watching both of those off and on for about the past 6 months. I seen the special longer version of TMP first and I've had it on VHS for over 25 years. However, in 2003 I bought the director's cut, and I actually prefer that one. I do prefer the special longer version over the theatrical cut though. Like you, I love TMP. Highly underrated if you ask me.

Enterprise, like DS9, took a while to grow on me. I didn't like it as much the first time around, didn't like the cast. I stopped after the first two seasons. Then picked it up again and loved it. Watched Enterprise 5 times.

I'm glad they're putting Discovery on Blu Ray. I see no need to get to 20 different streaming services. Just give me a Blu Ray set. Also I'm excited for Bumblebee. It looks like an actual Transformers movie.

Airdate order preserves the watching experience as if you were watching in 1966. That way, the "next voyage" trailer commercial becomes consistent again. 17:37 It's weird when companies release these things in piecemeal, then struggle in frustration to keep audiences. Oh, how I miss those Zaranyzerak rants.

Yeah, I get that it preserves the "original airing experience," but the problem is the cast and crew have gone on record many times stating that was never the intended order. And pretty much ALL the previous home video releases prior to the season sets confirm that. Not to mention it just feels weird having Where No Man Has Gone Before show up like 4 episodes in.

Yes. But those are also by a completely different team that has nothing to do with the remastering of the movies. Movies and TV are handled by two completely separate divisions that have nothing to do with each other. The fact that they're both part of the same franchise is irrelevant.

Same here Zaranyzerak, I also like Star Trek: The Motion Picture whereas most Star Trek fans hate it. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is my favourite of the six movies that featured the original cast. I have always liked Star Trek: Generations but it does have some flaws. I too don't agree with how Captain Kirk dies in it and I think that the character should have been used to a much better extent in the movie. I also think that the movie should have had the Jerry Goldsmith Star Trek Theme in it. It is very unfortunate that Paramount has not gone back and created superior Blu-Ray editions of the other nine of the first ten Star Trek movies. Instead they keep re-packaging the same crappy discs that they released back in 2009. I've got the same 2-Disc DVD Editions of the first ten Star Trek movies and they have served me well over the years. I bought Star Trek: The Compendium from Best Buy for $9.99 on Boxing Day in 2014 and I bought Star Trek: Beyond on Blu-Ray last year in December during Boxing Week for only $7.99. I would re-buy Star Trek: Beyond if Paramount went back and created a new edition with all of the extras but I don't think that it will happen because the movie underperformed at the Box Office.

The Star Trek clusterfuck boils down to CBS and Paramount being at war with each other over the rights to use the property. It's a large reason why there hasn't been much done with home video releases, unfortunately. CBS is run by a guy who despises genre television but has publicly admitted that he is exploiting Trek fans to get people to subscribe to their streaming service. That service has NOTHING else I'd even remotely want to watch as CBS has produced some of the lowest common denominator programming out there for going on decades now. Thankfully Discovery is getting a Blu-ray release in a few months from now and I will check it then.

Unless they use the same DNR'ed to death masters yet again. Resolution isn't everything. If the transfer itself is shit, no amount of bumping it up to 4K, 8K or 16billionK will make it any better. What they need to do is whole new masters from the original film prints and NOT overprocess them to shit again. Then and only then will they be "superb quality."

I ya if you do buy the current blu ray set the wrath of Kahn included in that set is NOT the remastered extended edition so if anyone out their does “upgrade” to this blu ray set keep the dvd director’s cut of the motion picture and the remastered blu ray of Wrath of Kahn.

Yep, I know. The remastered Director's Cut is only available as the standalone release I have. All the other releases are just the 2009 discs repackaged.

I know this is a little late but are you planning on getting the new remastered blu rays of Star Treks 1-4 apparently they're actually better transfers compared to the 2009 versions and this time they actually have most of the film grain intact. Just wanted to know your opinion though on those?

Yes, they are a long overdue upgrade that I absolutely plan to get at some point. I never bought any of the umpteen re-releases of the 2009 versions. There is a 4K/Blu-ray release of the Director's Edition of the first film coming as well.

Okay, here's the way it works - they made 1080p HD masters for the purpose of using them as high quality masters for DVD. Because of the lower resolution and more artifact-prone MPEG-2 compression, yes these masters were DNR'ed. The reason was to prevent artifacting as a result of the MPEG-2 compression not being able to handle the finer details at that lower resolution. So the fine details (which you wouldn't see at DVD-level quality anyway) were scrubbed out with DNR to allow for cleaner, artifact-free compression for the DVDs. This was a normal, common practice for DVD releases at the time and resulted in nice, artifact-free DVD releases. So fast forward a few years. Blu-ray comes out. Instead of doing NEW HD transfers of the films for the Blu-rays like they should have, they instead just dug out those DNR-ed to hell masters used for the DVD releases and just slapped them on the Blu-rays. I mean hey, they're TECHNICALLY HD because they're 1080p right? Yeah. And with almost no fine detail left whatsoever as that was all scrubbed away for cleaner DVD downconversion. So I recommend go with the DVDs. You're literally getting no better quality on the Blu-rays as they're from the same masters. Plus the DVDs give you some of the alternate cuts, and have tons of extras. Oh, except Star Trek 2. Get the Director's Cut Blu-ray edition of Star Trek 2 I showed here. It's got both cuts, is a fully remastered transfer that looks terrific, and has loads of extras. In short, get the ones I have and you'll be fine. Then join the rest of us in waiting for proper Blu-rays of the other 9 classic films.

Walter kionig was either running for a political office at the time or in a political office at the time of the animated series is what he said at a convention. Also I compared the extra’s on the DVD’s to the blu ray set and besides the 1st and 2nd movie all but the text extra’s are ported over and the blu ray set also includes an extra disc with the captains summit special and another trek special that I can’t remember the name of

Weird, there's no mention of that in Memory Alpha (the Star Trek wiki). Just that the animated series was already the most expensive animated show on TV due to the cost of the actors, so he was cut to save a bit of money. Though he did write one episode.

Actually it isn't. The Director's Edition has never been released on Blu-ray because the new effects were only rendered in 480p. The company that did those effects has said they still have all the project files and could easily re-render 1080p versions of the effects shots they did, but Paramount thus far has refused to pony up the cash the let them do so. As for the cover....yeah, Paramount wasn't paying attention and used the wrong artwork for those publicity shots of the 50th Anniversary release of TMP. It caused a lot of confusion and annoyance at the time. Surprised to see those pictures are still out there. Guess they never bothered to correct the mistake. Really shows how much they care about giving us a quality product, eh?
