As a Canadian (Commonwealth brother) you probably already know that the Brits did something similar during the Blitz years in WW2. Many NZers also did so also. Good on you for stepping up and sharing all this stuff! You are probably responsible for a renaissance in small scale intensive agriculture! Kia Kaha!

I agree on cutting back carrots, they are underrated and cheaply sold from big farms - organic grown taste so much better and have higher nutrients though. Not worth too sell that cheap. Tomatoes are kind of finicky, regular preventive antifungal sprays are recommended, and when pruning you can clone the suckers rather than trashing them to have a successive crop.

Very informative. Likewise carrots and tomatoes didn't sell well for me. I'm ramping up my greens production as well. I like the shoots and greens mix idea. I think that was a great way to compensate for your lettuce reduction. Well done sir

I think your hypothesis about the tomatoes being overwatered is a good one. The absolutely don't like too much water. Have you considered adding Daikon radish to the mix? They're becoming a staple at fancy restaurants here in Toronto at least.

Video Topic: Winter review process. What numbers do you look at? How/why these data? Do you include your employees in this discussion? Have you been taking notes all season for changes/improvements for next year, or is a more of a "look back"? You sort of got into it here with deciding to (sort of) cut carrots and tomatoes, but a full vid dedicated to your end-of-the-year process would be great. I'm coming to the end of my first season and looking for ways to put it into perspective. Thanks man, as always.

How many tomato plants do you need for your family of three, plus producing some to give away to neighbors and friends? I have 34 tomato plants in my main garden, plus about 10 more late-germinating stragglers that I threw in an unused bed in late April, just to see if they would produce later in the season. The 34 plants started to produce on May 2nd (first day to eat a Sweet 100 Cherry tomato from the garden!). I have truly enjoyed the Black Vernissage that were grown from free seeds that I received with my Baker Seed order. Small tomatoes (between golf ball and racketball size), but they are very meaty (little water) and they look really cool. We will be at max production soon -- there are loads of green tomatoes on the Creole and Better Boy plants. I wish I were set up to weigh and record the harvest each day. Btw, we pull the tomatoes as soon as they blush at all in order to avoid attracting squirrels, birds, and bugs. Sorry for the long post -- sort of thinking out loud and documenting here.

Hi Curtis. I'm sure that must've been a hard decision, but you have thought it out well. I remember from a previous video your point about the time it takes from seeding to harvesting. The 80-20 rule goes for the "real estate" as well. All those rows devoted to tomatoes and carrots could've turned faster if planted in spinach/radish/lettuce, etc. Also lots of good points about resting the soil, etc. Enjoying your videos-can't wait to see the upcoming Rhodes visit!

Man I feel for you. Tonight I could see the smoke as a faint haze. And that's coming from Kentucky! Even the weatherman was taking about it as the reason our temperature has drop so much today. Hang in there it will pass. On a side note. It's funny you drop tomatoes as I'm going to ramp up peppers, particularly green and red bell. As salad greens are too hard to keep alive in the summer. The heat just cooks them. I have exactly the opposite problem you have. But that's biosphere for you.

@nathanrogers8713

The problem is he plants multiple rows per row with the planter so unless they develop a planter that can lay down the 5 lines all at once as well as laying down the fabric, that idea will not work. The planter takes a flat per line so it would almost have to be a tractor attachment so it could hold 5 flats and lay down 5 lines. I think the commercial units for big ag do something like that.

Good call. Even if you decide to return to tomatoes for 2019, having rotated them out for a year will have deprived whatever soilborne pathogens were giving you trouble. I suppose it creates a hail vulnerability but if it is smoky next year, taking the poly off of your tunnels might be an idea especially if nothing you are growing is as heat-loving as tomatoes.

I can understand you on carrots but on tomatoes...that's a pretty tough decision. Following the principle of crop rotation, it might be a good thing to avoid them at least a year to prevent mildew or any disease connected to the tomato/pepper family. But, I think that you'll come back on tomatoes on 2019 :)

Turnips are really that profitable for you and desirable in your region? I know you had some issues with the toms this season, but seems crazy that you'd get rid of them and still sell turnips when toms are usually right behind greens in sales and profitability. Do you usually only grow toms in that plot? Could your issues also be attributed to the fact that nothing is being rotated there in addition to the smoke and high water table?

And yet with dutch bucket system the roots will sit in nutrient water at the bottom of the bucket for their entire growing life.
@OwlMoovement
@OwlMoovement 7 жыл бұрын
It's possible that the dutch bucket system, being hydroponic, is simply less accomodating to relevant pathogens than a saturated soil layer. I'd imagine that water is better oxygenated than a water table too. It may very well be pollutants carried in laterally by the water table's interflow from other parts of Kelowna. There are so many potential explanations that one can only speculate on without being in that site and have access to a lab.

Well considering that most people have Goldfish brains now due to high levels of screen time, it's no wonder that people have forgotten that the weather has always been crazy. Just because we went 11 years without a major hurricane hitting land, or 12 months in between some crazy wildfire, or 2 years in between crazy tornadoes, etc, etc, doesn't mean they don't happen on a regular basis. It just means our brains have been MANUFACTURED to think everything is the worst it's ever been so we can lovingly buy into a false paradigm of humans being the biggest evil alive and then buy into paying for our own depopulation.

1. Why don't you do vertical farming? 2. Why don't you do in ground green houses? 3. Why don't you use water sensors to perfectly water your plants? 4. Why don't you use light sensors to kick on LED lights to optimize your plant growth? 5. Why don't you combine wind power with your solar power system? (wind blows when sunlight is low) 6. Why don't you bring in honey bees to help pollination and thus increase growth and get some honey out of it? 7. Why don't you do aquaponics so you can get fish as well as free fertilizer?

1. He has a vertical farming wall in the greenhouse and another yet to be assembled planned for one of the tunnels. He showed them on the shipping pallets a couple vids ago. 2. He used to do in ground in the one greenhouse he has. Removed it and converted to shelving for more trays due to shadowing during winter from nearby tunnel. Also covered within the last week or two. 3. High desert environment with virtually no rainfall so much easier to assume that the plants need water on regular basis. 4. Most water sensors are not going to be deep enough to notice the water table issue they had. 5. While wind power is good, not all areas are well adapted for it and considering that their entire farm is in the city, a wind tower is likely against the local code. If the tunnel in the front yard for a couple weeks in spring could draw complaints to the local council, I can only imagine what a wind tower would do. 6. Bees for pollination only works when you have crops that require pollination. With tomatoes going out, there is almost nothing left that will bloom. If you lettuce is blooming this is termed as a "bad thing". Means you ignored it. 7. Aquaponics has limits to its usefulness. In a sub zero winter environment for example, all that plumbing becomes a huge liability. Additionally the current method of harvest they use would be much less effective with aquaponics meaning they would lose all their man hour savings. Power consumption would also increase with a aquaponics system and considering this is Canada where the rates are considerably higher than in the US, this is a factor. Also they are on rented back yards for most of the production. People enjoy seeing a nice neat oraganized garden in their yard. An aquaponics arrangement looks a LOT more industrial and a lot less appealing. Since they currently do not do fish, they do not have the facilities to process fish. The risk of cross contamination between fish and vegetables would be high enough that for safety a new certified kitchen would likely be necessary. It would also require a significant time investment and expenditure on fish feed. Also not sure about in Canada, but in many places there are significant licensing requirements for farm raising fish of any kind. Finally, the sheer amount of investment required to setup that large of an aquaponics system could be very prohibitive. Disclaimer: I personally really like aquaponics and am going to be setting up my own system in the near future. I do however fully understand why it may not be feasible in his case.

Considering that both carrots and especially tomatoes are a lower rotation speed crop (single crop per season for tomatoes) it should actually result in a significant increase in production since those rows can be put into high rotation yielding many crops in a single season instead of just one.

I am stunned that you can't make a decent profit selling carrots at $2.50 a pound. That works out to be $5.50 a kilo or 2.2 pounds where I am and I can buy organic carrots for less than that. I pay next to nothing now as I grow my own in my little market garden. I am glad you spoke to other farmers about the tomatoes, a lot better than having poor man's pride.

+Dave Owen it's the time it takes to bag them that's killing it. But it's not that we don't make a profit, we do, it's just not even a fifth of what we make on greens.

That's fair enough considering your 80/20 rules. Where I live is serious carrot country and these guys haven't had a price rise in 15 years. I am only new to carrots but what I know is from farmers like this who are the best in Australia. Check out this bagging and processing of carrots if you like. It's only 4kms from my little plot. Hardly any Australian workers mainly Koreans on a work Visa! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYiaoWudbsdgbqc

Mostly 8-9 degrees now at night but, wow, that's some difference. I think I've got a considerably shorter season then sadly.

I'm reading his book now, he approaches it from a couple angles. It's a big social currency thing in cities, honestly his book is worth the buy. I haven't even started farming yet spending this season just growing a bunch of varieties to figure out what grows, sells and has some demand in my area. Hoping to be ready for market by 2021. Good luck!

What would have happened this year if you had cut back on your other crops and concentrated all your efforts on tomatoes? There is a danger in putting all your efforts into a more and more limited crop range. Don't forget too that public figures (e.g. politicians) say dumb things such "all eggs have salmonela" - ripped the rug from under UK egg producers for a while.
@nathanrogers8713
@nathanrogers8713 7 жыл бұрын
In the US they also assume all eggs have salmonella so require eggs are washed and as such are require to be kept refrigerated. US consumers are so used to this as the status quo that many fridges even have built-in places for eggs. It is all in the approach and what your customers are used to I guess.

I really appreciate your educational videos and dialogue. But the marketing end, sheesh.. topped carrots @ 2.50 / lb. bagged is not profitable?! Can you break that down a little more? What sort of restaurant will pay $3.50- 4.00+ / lb. for carrots? Do they foam them and serve 'em with fish eggs and lacquered squid guts and deconstructed buttered toast?

Stepping closer to monoculture? Is the organic matter going down in your soil? You don't cover crop much, you don't leave crop residues, you till. I have been watching soil conservationists and no till folks saying, some of the most depleted soils they see are on organic farms. Just asking.
