It’s another commute with Zack! As usual, please feel free to suggest a bike you want to see featured here. If we get enough comments, we’ll do our best to send him home on that one next.
--
The perfect motorcycle doesn’t exist. Just ask anyone with two or more of them in their garage. But in an effort to make machines closer to perfect, compromise is often the name of the game. This CBR650F fills a hole in Honda’s lineup, between the beginner-friendly CBR500R and the track-ready CBR600RR, and rides pretty much like a blend of those two bikes.
There’s perceptive Honda DNA in the CBR650. In fact, I would argue that it is more a blend of the CBR500R and the VFR800 sport-tourer. The CBR650 has the feel of a quality tool in your hand-hefty and well-built, with the right amount of design. At 472 pounds it arguably has too much heft, but you could also say it’s a good thing that it doesn’t feel like a 7/8-size motorcycle. For a commute, it’s an approachable companion with a small dose of excitement blended into the recipe.
I have a few big takeaways from my time with this bike. One is a reminder of how simple can be better. The CBR650F doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is-sure, it’s got sporty styling, but it has its own character, too. Another piece that will be overlooked in a lot of other CBR650 reviews is the braking performance. The componentry on this bike is not fancy, but two 320mm rotors is basically superbike-spec. The calipers are basic, sliding-pin units from other commuter bikes, but putting two of them on board with dual discs means there’s plenty of power to stop. Recognition from the engineers, I think, that 472 pounds is heavier than a superbike. It’s thoughtful, utilitarian design that deserves a nod.
Think of this bike as a VFR650. Sport-Touring Lite. It’s a complete bike, with balanced suspension, linear power, good brakes, and a handsome aesthetic. Yes, it makes less power than a pure-bred supersport bike but it’s also friendlier on the street, more comfortable, and quite a bit less expensive. Hopefully in watching this video you understand why, and can decide whether or not it’s your next ride.

The bike is your ideal first big bike, which is what it was designed to be. Its reliable, comfortable, easy to control, linear, forgiving engine so if you are in the wrong gear it doesnt matter. It will even pull in top gear from low down. You can ride in it the twisties, you can ride it to work, you can tour on it. It is a great all round bike. The seating geometry is more upright than a supersport so long journeys are a breeze. This bike needs to be supported because it is one of the only 4 cylinder bikes in its class all the others are going to twins. If you can only have one bike, and don't want an adventure bike this is it. They are also on at good deals at the moment because the 2019 model is out soon which addresses all of the issues Zac mentions.

Daniel Stafford I just picked up the 2018 CB650F which is the same bike except it’s a naked. I rode it very little so far, we still have a ton of snow. Got a great deal on it since it was a demo with about 30 miles on it. Defenetly it being the only inline 4 in its class was a big factor in my choice

Someone explain the difference between the 650F and 650R. Really I was on a CBR 500R until I discovered this and now I want this for the extra power but I don't know if I need it because of the weight, MPG and what not. 🤔

I don't need a gear position indicator, really. I just need a light that says, "you're in sixth, dummy." Except it shouldn't say "dummy" because that would be hurtful.

You're right that nobody really "needs" a gear indicator because at least most of us riders can count from 1-6. But at this day and age, with the way technology has advanced so far and you can source a nice LCD screen for cheap or even an analog setup with some regular button style lights that indicate the gear is a must for any bike that isn't considered "pretty low budget". Like I wouldn't expect it on a brand new $4500 bike... But maybe $6000+ it's kind of inexcusable. (even though I agree for most riders it's not even necessary).

I absolutely love my 2015 Honda CBR650F non-ABS model. It’s been a great step-up bike for me. Fantastic bike delivers just the amount of sportiness to suit me and keeps me honest and focused out on the road. Add a tank bag and some saddle bags and hit the road with 45+ average MPG even with the saddle bags on. I’m considering an Airhawk to possibly stretch some time in the saddle. But I don’t regret having to stop for a break to stretch my legs every so often. I nearly always am eager to get back on the bike, flip the switch and get back on the road. Honda put the right amount of magic smoke in this model to blend a respectable amount of performance along with reliability. This bike is still big enough to really scare yourself on if you don’t respect it, but it’s been an amazing bike for me to continue to enjoy learning how to ride on. Enjoy and ride safe everyone!

Zack, great commute/review vid as usual! A couple requests for topics to mention during your rides if you could please: Ambient temp during ride, any engine/radiator heat blowing on your legs or wafting up onto the happy parts, airflow at your helmet smooth/quiet/turbulent/loud, and of course how bad does the seat suck. These are my three biggest concerns regarding comfort when considering a bike - I've had so many bikes that roast my legs and/or privates, loud and turbulent airflow off the screen, and seats that are little more than a vinyl wrapped cement block. Engine performance, braking, and handling are of course important, but if you can't stand to be on the bike for more than 15 minutes, or it roasts your various body parts as soon as the thermometer hits 80degF, then the bike is useless except for track days.

MT/FZ-07 beats this inline-4 with twins, is quicker 0-180 km/h (0-112.5 mph) and is not that much behind in top speed. Being inline 4 should have meant The Smoothest engine, which sadly the 650F isn't.

I got the 2015 cbr 650 fa. Me being a beginner and a sport bike fan, I like the bike very much! Rode a cbr 1000 rr the other day and the cbr 650 fits me way better. I like the power delivery, the corner handling, the fuel efficiency and the looks obviously. I just really like the whole package. I think it's a good bike to learn riding on, without having to sacrifice the Sportbike feel. Last week I rode with a couple of guys and they told me: "This is a Sportbike!", even though I thought it was more like a sport tourer, but it has the reception of a sport bike. If you ask me and you look for a great first bike, get the cbr 650 fa. Mine has abs, I got it for 5800€, 3 years old, pristine condition and I couldn't be happier. This is one of those bikes that fits into that category of middle weight 600 beginner ish type bikes. Like the Yam FZ6R it has four cylinders while others in the class have 2. IMO, the thing that holds this model back from the others is the price. We can argue all day long about looks and character, but if you were to assemble all of these bikes together with your friends and went for a ride, they would all do well. These are great bikes for people who are not yet ready to ride a big, heavy, powerful liter bike or above. Good at just about everything.....

Had a couple cruiser bikes, rode a Ninja 650 a few times. And rode an old Radian 600 (liked the surprise power at the top end on that bike). Ninja bars were too close and upright for my long arms, and the power seemed way too linear even for a novice like me so there was never any surprise power with it at the top end. Would like something sporty enough to give you more when you want it, and enough of a forward lean that at my typical 65mph commute Im not fighting to stay on or have wrist pain. Although a bit more than the others, it seems like a good "wont kill you quick" sportier bike for a 50 year old that doesn't have 30 years experience. (more like 4). Great reviews you do! From your reviews I know what "you" like, and even if your review wasn't totally positive, it looks like something I would like alot. That shows your talent.... Thanks and keep it up..

Nice looking bike, as customary for Honda. The gauge cluster isn't to my taste, but it displays all the relevant information clearly. Good size tank, theoretically makes for a longer time between fuel stops, but in reality you're probably going to be filling up just as often. I did expect it to be a little heavier than the middleweight Twins, but not that much heavier. Pricing, now there's the sticking point. Even with the better resale value of Honda's, MSRP alone makes the CBR650F a non-starter for me. Ultimately I'll be sticking with my Ninja 650. Thanks for the Video and Review.

"That kind of zing you don't get from an MT-07, or a Ninja 650, or an SV 650". Yes! That's why I'm so effing curious to see what your thoughts on the FZ6R are. =P Now that price tag makes me think Honda abuses their clients. When I got my FZ6R (used), you could still get a new one. The FZ6R, the Ninja 650, the GSX 650F and the CBR 650F were VERY similar, but the Honda was about 20% more expensive, with absolutely nothing special to make up for that price difference. Anyway... Excellent video, guys! And, damn, did I miss MC Commute!

ryvoltz motorcycle.com did a comparison w the Honda, Yamaha, and kawi. The Yamaha won. I've test ridden the Honda and Yamaha and found the Yamaha more fun; it was easier to turn in while engine seemed quicker to spin up. Slight edge in brakes and suspension to the Honda, but not enough for the price difference. Insurance quote for the Honda was sky-high; maybe because of the CBR in the name.

@Christpoher Ortega Funny you should complain about throttle response and discomfort on the saddle. I, myself, find the throttle response okay (although I agree it could be better) and I took a 1000 mile trip last year with it, doing about 400 miles a day. No problems. Good to see you like it as a commuting bike, though. I totally agree on that. And thanks a lot for your comment! Cheers!

As you said and extend it, gets the job done. And it is a four - which to my generation was a wow! It'll last in good cpndition way beyond the mt07s etc. If you want to be content rather than occasionally very happy but usually frustrated with your bike, this makes most sense in that middleweight allrounder class. So to me, price isn't a big hurdle. But shame the tingles aren't dealt with: all those twins have overcome their inherent vibe nature. An I4 should be easier to engineer vibes out. Great review btw! Not your cup of tea, but honestly summarised. This is the near ideal can-you-live-with-it format.

Love the videos. I was wondering if your riding gear changes with your bikes you commute on? If so, could you maybe incorporate that into your vids? I hung between fzo9 nc75ox versys650. Not sure of what gear to select. Thanks

I own the 2018 model, and I must say that even though the newer 650R is on the market, the 2018 CBR650F remains a great purchase due to its price (they have practically the same engine) and features. In Europe, for the A2 license, it’s one of the few remaining 4-cylinder bikes. It’s a perfect bike for beginners, especially if you like sport bikes. This will help you transition later to something more powerful (like the 600RR or 1000RR) without too much difficulty when you get the A license. Although it’s quite docile, it’s a powerful and fast bike while still being comfortable. The engine is forgiving and won’t give you any scares, but when you exceed 5000-6000 rpm, it really gives you a thrill. Certainly, I won’t discredit other models like the Ninja 650 or the MT-07. I’ve gone on rides with friends who have the MT, and it’s a fantastic bike. But this is a matter of taste, and if you like 4-cylinders, you’ll probably be willing to sacrifice a bit of torque to hear this machine scream. Other than that, I agree with the cons (little buzzy over 4500-5000 rpm, no gear indicator and old display…). And I will add that you need to get a full exhaust system if you want to improve the sound ($$).

Compared to my last bike a Bandit GSF 650 the Honda Cb650F is a lightweight, easier to move around, more nimble, easy to corner, nice n progressive on the throttle none of the twist n shit myself go or no go performance & a fantastic everyday all rounder for a fairly new rider coupled with if I want a full on blast enough to stain my pants it delivers bike.

My opinion on the heavier bikes is that they’re much more stable in the wind and at highway speed. To me, it’s actually an advantage as long as you have ample power.

the wifey had a CBR600F for a few years (UK), great bike, torquey, flexible, fast, could commute, tour. Had an LCD dash, took soft luggage well, good fuel mileage, comfy, good resale value. What's not to like? Honda sold more of them than the RR model.

These guys hate Honda's . They have been bought by Yamaha. CBR650f 0-60 3.5 seconds, Top Speed 150, has fairings wind protection for highway riders, Smoother and more stable at highway speeds. Much Quieter. Gastank 4.6 gallons. 50 mpg 230 mile range MT07 0-60 3.73 , Top Speed 133, no fairings, its more jerky and less stable. Gas tank 3.7 Gallons. 55mpg 203 mile range. I'll take this Honda CBR650F over an MT07 any day.

Suggestions for upcoming MC Commutes: the more commutable single R BMW, S1000R Ducati Monster 821 (A big seller, but larely ignored by the magazines - dare to be different Zack) Yamaha MT-07, yes, yes, we know you like it, but has it ever done an MC Commute? Suzuki SV650 becasue there so many used ones around, this time change it up and test an older model, let us know if it makes a good used bike for communiting. A couple of smaller crusiers: Star Bolt R-Spec and an M50 and my #1 request, as SOON as you can get your hands on one - the KTM 790 Duke!!!!! (Have you done the 690 already?)

When this bike was first revealed I was in love with it's looks, but I don't know now it just looks ok to me. I did consider it when I was shopping for a bike, but, the dealer here never brought them, can't remember if the Yamaha dealer had the MT-07 back then or not, but I already have a naked bike and wanted a faired bike, so it was between the Hyosung GT650R and the Ninja 650, both 2014, the price difference was $2,200 and I liked the looks of the Hyosung more, the Ninja wasn't an ABS model and the quality though a bit better than the Hyo, but only just, so logically I went with the better looking cheaper bike! Got my hands on it on 28th December 2014 and I am still loving it till this day 28k KM later! No buyer's remorse, which I wouldn't have had had I gotten the Ninja 650 either, or had I gotten the CBR, I love bikes, they're awesome!

I just picked up this exact bike in the same color. I mostly love it. There's a FEW things I'm not a fan of. When you get out on the freeway with 75mph limit, to ME it feels really buzzy above 6k RPM, nearly as buzzy as my former Ninja 650 parallel twin. I find it significantly more comfortable at 5500 or below. Not a fan of the sound of a blender full of bbs. That being said, it does sound much better when it's under load than just cruising. Maybe it's the chain lash or something that makes it seem so buzzy. Another thing that I found odd, when first starting it in the mornings to ride to work, I noticed that if you give it any more than ~70% throttle suddenly before it's warmed up good, it kinda chokes and sputters a bit. Not very confidence inspiring, but fortunately it goes away once warmed up. Lastly, the shit halogen headlight. The FIRST upgrade I made was an LED unit, because the yellow halogen single bulb is dogshit. And I almost forgot, I definitely wish the 6 gears were spaced out a little more. I really appreciate that it has 6 (some motorcycles only have 5), but honestly they really could've spaced them out further and it would be a more comfortable ride. To be able to cruise around at 35mph in 6th seems a bit short geared. If they were to spread them out more and maybe make that 6th gear about 15% taller, that would also help with the buziness at 80mph cruising. Those things aside, this really is a great bike, and I really do like it despite those issues.

I liked the F4i better. It's a bummer that they really haven't captured that bike's appeal since. The CBR6xxF series was really down since then. The 600rr splitting off of the F series was good, but the F4i just did everything for me in a way nothing really has since in that class.

Feb 2020... walked into dealership and saw a new 2018 650F... Walked out the door paying $7002 including tax++ . For that price... this bike is the bomb... so comfortable too... and yes it can be a bit buzzy in the nether region at 6k but it's more like an "Oooh that's interesting" rather than a dealbreaker. This bike is in a class of it's own. Twins to me sound so frikkin cheap n raggity like a dirt bike. Like hearing a 4banger car or a V8. I give him props to say though it's not for him...there's nothing wrong with it. His beef in the end is the price compared to what he prefers...which is his bias. There's no accounting for taste. When I was younger, I had a CBR600F3 and now being 48, I have a 2014 Harley Breakout pushing 100HP along with the 650F. Every other ride, I switch up. Love them both. This review doesn't do it justice. Just saw his cbr500r review and he was much more please with it. Well the 650f is the same bike with much bigger balls.

in Europe we had 2011-2013 CBR 600F (PC41), which fell pretty much within the same "budget" I4 segment but with several important differences: 600cc w/ 102hp, around 13k rpm redline, inverted forks and a digital instrument cluster; was around €7-8k new (tax included), produced in Italy (Honda Industriale S.p.A, not the Japanese factory); having experienced both it and its predecessor (PC35) it's a bit neutered in comparison, so this 650F looks a bit too mild and much more expensive than the alternatives

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I prefer the low to midrange grunt/torque of the MT-07, versus the high rpm scream of an inline 4.

kings17court for a i4 this is a torquier 4 cylinder, runs a longer stroke vs the short stroke super high revving i4’s in the 600’s. I would spend the extra over a MT or Ninja strictly for the superior fit and finish, and having the plastics really makes it more comfortable on interstate commutes which I do every day...
