2018 Honda Gold Wing Tour | Favorites & Fails

When you ride as many different motorcycles as we do it gives you good perspective on a given bike’s strengths and weaknesses. And whether you’re shopping for your next bike or just want to be in the know, it’s helpful to get an experienced rider’s opinion. So as a quick way to convey the highs and lows of the bikes we’ve been riding we came up with this new video series. Favorites & Fails is exactly what the name suggests, a concise list of the good and bad of the bikes we’re riding.

My riding preferences lean heavily toward smaller, lighter, more lively naked bikes like the Suzuki SV650 and Yamaha FZ-07 or Aprilia's fire-breathing Tuono V4 1100, but even as a diehard performance guy there are still aspects of the 2018 Gold Wing Tour that I appreciate. After all, I spent six months and 20,000 miles touring the US as an alternative to college, so I know what matters when you're on the road. With all that in mind, here are my favorite and least-favorite features on the new G-Wing based on my first-ride experience in Texas.
FAVES
That adjustable windscreen and the bike's awesome aerodynamics.
If you’ve never maneuvered the sail of a windscreen on the previous-generation Goldy, let me outline the process. First, ya gotta pull over. Then flip the levers on either side of the dash, grasp the top of the screen, and either shimmy that giant sheet of polycarbonate up or down, depending on what you’re after. Thank goodness all that manual manipulation is in the past! The 2018 bike has an electrically adjustable screen that’s controlled by a rocker switch near the left grip. And no matter where you position the new, narrower windscreen, the airflow over you and your passenger is going to be smoother and cleaner than on the outgoing bike. We've got wind-tunnel testing to thank for that. Back-to-back rides confirm the new Gold Wing has better aero, and now that you can adjust the windscreen with the push of a button while in motion, the convenience and comfort factors are through the roof.
Next-gen linked brakes.
The crude functionality of early linked-braking systems left plenty of us with a bad taste in our mouths (I'm thinking of the setup that Kawasaki put on the Concours 14 a number of years ago), but the combined brakes on the Gold Wing are totally transparent and help slow the big rig down quickly while keeping the chassis perfectly level. Pressing the rear-brake pedal squeezes the rear disc and seamlessly feeds some pressure to the front calipers (specifically the center two pistons on each of the new radially mounted six-piston calipers) to ensure smooth, strong deceleration. It works so effectively that I rarely used the front-brake lever while riding around the back roads of Texas.
That new dash.
There’s no way to put it subtly-the outgoing bike’s instrumentation was a disaster. So. Many. Buttons. Over the years Honda kept adding features to the Wing until the entire cockpit was carpeted in buttons, knobs, and switches. The gauge faces and LCD screen were also looking pretty dated, so I was happy to see that Honda totally overhauled the dash on the 2018 bike. It’s not only functional, it’s attractive and thoroughly modern and really helps distance the new bike from the old one. A new menu system (that you navigate via the new 7-inch TFT display) eliminates dozens of buttons, and overall the cockpit appears more streamlined and sophisticated.
As always, that flat-six engine!
There’s something special about the way six cylinders turn gas into forward motion. The smoothness is unparalleled, the sound is inspiring, and the torque is phenomenal. The King Wing’s 1,833cc produce more than 100 pound-feet of torque right off idle, so there’s never a shortage of thrust, at least in the first few gears. Speaking of gears, there are now six (instead of five), and you can even get the Wing in a seven-speed DCT version. Ride-by-wire throttle, a slipper clutch, and four valves per cylinder are all new features for the reworked engine and only serve to make it more adaptable and better than ever.

Recently did a 7,200 mile SW UT to Sac. CA to DC to MA to SW UT trip on an 09. The 18 does hold less gas, but with improved mileage from 6th gear, lighter bike, better engine, etc. you're still getting over 200 miles at highway speeds.

Wife doesn't ride (thank the lord), so storage is plenty for me. I usually stop every 100-125 miles, so fuel is fine. Not like I am crossing the Austrailian outback in the beast. Hate carplay, so that's not an issue. Test driving one next week.

Re Storage, Did a trip in Europe for 2 weeks on a rented ST1300, My wife and I had already learned the lesson that locking 2 full face helmets in the top case and or side cases robbed too much storage. so we opted lock helmets with a locking cable when we walked away from the bike and did not want to carry our helmets. for me, I think the storage is great on the new GW. (no don't own one). Also, the linked brake system was fantastic on my 2007 ST1300abs so I am pretty sure Honda does it well on that bike as well. Sold my ST because i miled it up and in market for new bike, love the GW but over 30k in Canada, Great video, Great Dance lol . Thanks

Wrong about not being able to display the speed. Left digital readout on the dash can be set to either speed or temperature. Also on my trip for LA to Cleveland in Econ mode at speed limit usually 70 mph I averaged 49.5 mpg which translates to 250 mile range easily not 200.

Nice review, I agree completely. One fail I would like to add...and this goes for all motorcycles. Add "Non-glare glass" for all instrumentation! The larger the instrumentation screen the more its needed.

I was looking forward to this bike coming out but I agree with the video on alot of the fails. Only adding about 6 HP total output, cargo capacity And as you mentioned, the K1600, won't get off the line as fast as the new GW, but my guess is that once you hit 2nd gear and above on the K, the goldwing will be a small spec in the mirror in 30 seconds.

Actual range 250 miles with a bit left over to find a gas station - after 30,000 miles of riding - 20% city. I think he’s riding the 6speed manual model - DCT is wonderful! CarPlay works just fine and cargo space (do more with less).

I don't really understand why people get so upset about tank capacity. It is often advised to take small breaks after each hour of riding and some countries have laws governing the driving time of professional drivers (like truck drivers). You might take your break at a gas station as well also the fact that you have to stop for gas prevents you from getting sloppy and not taking that break.

You might want to take a break after 200 miles but that will be on a completely empty tank and there might not be a gas station at that location.

Because I've been more than 200 miles without a gas station. And I'm more likely to do it again on my giant touring motorcycle than any other vehicle with the exception of an adventure bike. (KLRs totally count as adventure bikes) And also because I like to gas up once a week when I go to work.

I agree with you 100%. I have two bikes with 6 gallon or more tanks and I rarely get or go more than 200 miles anyway. Furthermore, its three plus hours of sitting in one spot with a lot of wind and bumps. I look forward to the gas breaks. I usually stop every 60 to 90 minutes or I just don't enjoy the ride.

So what happens when you stop for your break after 200 miles and there is no gas station. Stop every 100 miles just to be safe? How long will it take you to cross the country when you have to stop for gas every 100 miles. 7 gas stops a day? Thats too much. Where I live there are places where gas stations can be 3 hours apart.

not all gas stations are 200 miles apart in most of the USA. And the one or two places that are may mean you might have to stop at the station at the beginning of that stretch and fill up even if it means that your last fill up was 80 mile ago. That's ten minutes at most.

Range in tour mode using 89 Octane is typically 220 - 250 miles, based on GWT forum comments and my own experience. More USB ports can be installed as accessories. I've not experienced any issues with CarPlay as long as my iPhone is connected after the GPS map appears...on my bike, if I connect before that, the phone is recognized, CarPlay is not, but quickly unplugging and plugging back in solves the issue. There are GPS issues when uploading routes from a USB thumb drive (can be corrected with third-party programs), but I believe these are software bugs that will be resolved in the future. Clever travel packing can minimize some of the reduced storage capacity. I do not like the left passenger grab rail, as it does not inspire confidence when I'm trying to place the bike on the centerstand.

good review, agree one USB awful, re apple car play Android update out in USA coming to Uk soon hopfully better, smaller tank don't really have an issue as is it really that difficult to find a gas station and stretch legs after 200 miles....I don't think so I would probably be ready for a cuppa and a toilet break after that long any way. The biggest disappointment for me was the DCT which is a big fail compared to the K1600 quick/slick shift semi auto utilising footpeg and clutch lever which is way way better than non ergonomic paddles and no clutch lever or foot peg which we bikers are used to. sound system knocks the k1600 out of the water as does the smoothness of the ride. all in all great review ty

In motorcycling I’m thinking, most people don’t want a Mr Roger’s neighborhood kind of engine on a motorcycle. That would be unexciting. This newly redesigned Honda GoldWing can rip and handle against the best of the big rig Tourers. Seriously. You should know this, and it does so more seamlessly and without handlebar vibration and if Honda stayed true to their engine and build integrity, as they have on previous generation GoldWings, as with all of their products, a lower cost of ownership associated with ownership due to lower maintenance. As for storage, carrying “everything” for a two or three day trip is more than adequate. Packing for outdoor adventures requires knowing how to pack. How do engineers qualify stowage needs and how much space does one really need? This is a challenging question, so you make compromises based around the form and function of your particular motorcycle. “Form” (how it looks and as a result makes you feel when you see it in your driveway) and “Function” ( how it operates, performs and lives up to it’s design goals when ridden) are why people by any bike, especially a redesigned all new GoldWing. Honda after 6 generations of road sofas hit a home run here. It will only take a test ride for many to embrace this bad ass newest GoldWing. Some no doubt will feel not sufficiently athletic enough, at least in their heads, to allow themselves to appreciate great satisfaction from such a performance oriented machine. Too many Golden Corals or Waffle Houses possibly. They will probably be the naysayers. One thing is for sure, gone forever is the rolling sofa stigma and thank God.

Still love my '02 Wing...their best integrated styling. Every change since then has been to add an angle here or there. Lost it's styling integration. 97000+ of trouble free miles. 225 or so mileage range with enough left to safely make it to the next exit for gas.

I have a BMW K1600GT and I was convinced I would trade it for the new GW. Unfortunately, as a 2up touring bike which is what I use it for, the lack of storage space compared to my GT and smaller tank capacity has lead me to skip this new version of what is otherwise a great bike.

None of the "fails" listed here would be a deal-breaker for me. I ride solo so the storage capacity would be adequate along with a carry-on bag on the back seat. A two hundred mile range is more than adequate as I'm ready for an ass break after about a 100 miles no matter how comfortable a seat is. I rarely listen to the stereo on my bike because of the sound quality. One USB port not a problem for a solo rider as I'll charge up at the motel.

You can't get a Victory Vision anymore but my '09 has room for two helmets. Also has heated grips, heat for both seats, electric windshield. What took Honda so long to add these things? Some cams and mine's about 120hp 120 tq. GW is a very refined machine but I couldn't get past the boxer engine getting in the way of my feet. V2 means I can stretch my legs w/o going spread eagle. VV radio sucks though. Enjoyed the vid.

I've read so much about the lower storage capacity and I have to agree. Hoping Honda will offer and optional larger top trunk to help alleviate this or better yet, offer the larger trunk standard and the smaller one (currently on the bike) as an option.

I don't know why people think with the lower amount of fuel it can hold makes it a bad thing. The bike actually gets better mileage than the older Goldwings so it can go farther, thus holding less gas and takes you the same distance. I consistently get 48 - 50 mpg with my 2018 Tour DCT around town. I would expect the same on the highway or on long rides.

How about how the front end is too softly sprung and it ends up riding on the rubber bumper at its limit too easily. How about the way the steering tie rods often exhibit moderate to excesive play after a few thousand miles? I'd wait a tear of two for Honda to fix the issues with this bike.

Hey did you notice that there is a flat spot onthe powercurve on the second gear only? It almost feel like that the my bike limits its power on secons gear before it pulls hard on 6000rpm. On low rpm using 3rd gear feels more powerfull then using 2nd gear. Please helpp...

Is it really a "Bumping sound system" though? Ive read somewhere on a forum that the speakers are smaller and lower powered than the last generation. I am in the market for a touring bike this year and am leaning between the goldwing and the Star Venture, and the sound system is important to me. It is really frustrating to me that when these review videos come out none of these content producers ever seem to compare the sound systems or give you any specs.

So lets see here...I ride a 2008 Honda ST 1300. Electric windshield check (had one since the 2003 models) 7.5 gas tank good for a 300 mile range vs the 2018 Honda 200 mile range, check. More luggage capacity than the 2018 Gold Wing, check. More horsepower 117 vs 100 and lighter weight 631 lbs. vs 734 lbs. check. I think I will keep the ST...its paid for!

It’s funny how the NSX taillight design language carries over to the GW

Best bike ever! But, I have one thing I truly hate; The four-way pad on the left handlebar. With gloves on, especially winter gloves, it's very difficult to choose a direction or its center button by themselves. You'll almost always press something you did not intend because of the way your thumb has to lay across two or three buttons at the same time. You have to take your eyes off the road and arch your thumb and watch your hand to make the right selection. That's dangerous! Before my Goldwing, I had a 2018 Indian Chieftain. If I ever go back to a V-Twin, it would be the Chieftain. The Chieftain has a joystick that does the same thing as the pad with center button on the Goldwing does, only you don't have to take your eyes off the road to know exactly what direction you're choosing or know you're pressing the center button without also pressing a directional control. That's the because you can clearly feel the top of the joystick through your glove so you can tilt it in any direction or press in on the joystick for the equivalent button press. With my 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT so otherwise beautifully engineered, SOMEBODY went to sleep designing that gawd-awful four way pad on the left handlebar. As for some of the fails mentioned in this video, I don't fully agree. The tank is smaller, but I get about 240 mile range because the engine is redesigned for better efficiency over the previous Goldwing designs. I have LidLox.com mounted off the ends of my handlebars to easily lock two helmets to the bike and don't need to use the trunk for helmet storage.

I mean honestly I take the bare essentials when I go out riding as is. My wife doesn't bring her huge makeup bag. We pack for the trip. If the trip is only 3 days long I don't need extra pants just shirts, socks, and underwear, that saves space. The space on the 18GW Tour is more than enough for both me and my wife. If you need more room than that Honda sells trailers for the GW's to carry a long. The only thing I really agree with that is a fail in my eyes is the gas tank. I really feel that they should have a bigger tank to really go the distance on a bike that gets the same gas range as the previous model GW's.

FAIL, host dances at the end :) Anyway, did I see a vent slot below the windshield? Is there any way to block it off on a cold day of riding? What happens when it rains? Does the water shoot right up the vent and on to your chest or face? I don't have first hand knowledge, but if any of these are true, that would be a show stopper type fail.

Good Review. Honda needs to listen. Re Fuel: My 2001 ST 1100 holds 7.4 gallons and gets 43-44 mpg easy. That's 318 mile range! 200 miles is BS for a machine like this. As for the rear bags -- capacity is too small and interior is oddly shaped so they are hard to pack. These are a joke compared to big, easy-to-pack bags on R1200RT, which are also removable -- a huge plus. With removable bags you don't have to pull gear out and haul it to motel. Honestly, for 28-30k with tax and license, this machine has too many deal breakers. I do like riding position and windscreen is plenty tall (I am 6'1).

Actual fuel range more like 250+ (over 19,000km /11,800 miles = 20.5 km/lL or 48 miles/USgal) mainly scenic highway in tour mode...

Where on earth is "no digital speedo" a fail? I much rather have everything analogue and dislike TFT which seems to be the new trend, unfortunately. That's actually a plus that it STILL has analogue gauges.

I think the point on no digital speed is no GPS speed / exact speed. Other brands allow their GPS units to show digital GPS measured speed. Past gen of gold wings were notorious for having speedometers off 5% reading too low. 80 mph indicated on speedo was actually 76 mph.

Was all ready to trade My ST1300 until I saw this Bike at Honda’s Daytona Bike week display. Epic fail for me on the range and storage. I really think Honda is going to have to offer a Grand Tour at some point. Why they never refreshed the ST is really a shame. BMW offers the R1200RT and the K1600GT(L). Both are similar in options with the obvious difference being the engine. The ST would have made a great entry level tourer with just a few minor upgrades/options. With this new Gold Wing offering my ST became my favorite long distance steed again.

The range on my 2028 Goldwing is between 350 and 400 miles not 200. This is far more then enough range on a tank. I will grand there not enough storage when riding 2 up. When riding 1 up, there is no reason to carry more than it's capacity if yiu have a large rear seat bag. These things are amazing.

I wear XXL helmet and managed to get two them in the trunk. But, it is sort of a Harry Houdini task. Luggage? All I need is my toothbrush and spare undies and a few baskc tools.

I think the bike looks great I know it's when I first saw the design that it's smaller than the previous model so I expected the luggage to be smaller which is okay for me but the fuel range would be my biggest complaint because on a tour bike you want the maximum amount of mileage you can get with a full tank so yes I don't like that part

This is such a compromised design for this bike. It's meant to be a touring bike, yet my FJR1300 has more storage (with a top case) and a larger tank. Hell, I'm pretty sure I have more storage on my 2002 Honda 919 with Motocentric Mototrek soft bags and a tail bag. I'd easily take a bike with modular storage over this, or a Yamaha Star Venture if I were in the market for a big tourer like that.
