2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited - Redline: Review

Living in the shadows of a competitor is never easy, as all-new versions of the Camry and Accord hit the market, where does that leave Hyundai's strong valued Sonata? For 2018, Hyundai has freshened the exterior styling, added new features, and a new transmission on 2.0T models. However, something still seems lost from the previous generation, and the latest Sonata is no longer the style or value leader in the segment, it does still offer a strong warranty, high build quality, and easy driving dynamics all at a lower price versus its latest Japanese rivals.

I’ve had my 2018 sonata limited base 4 cylinder but it’s the refresh with the honey comb grill and it is about 20 hp low in power but still has enough. We are loving this car and twice while driving the freeway on trips hit the highest mpg at 40.2 mpg! We absolutely love this car!

I am 6’3 over 300 pounds & this car is COMFORTABLE! Gives me ALL of the options I want in a new car: BSM, Navigation, H/C seats, push button start, & a premium sound system. In my driving position, I fit behind me PERFECTLY which is a big deal for when I have people in my car. For the price they are, it’s a great car IMHO. Idk why everyone is dragging on how it lacks whatever.

This is the car for me! Just test drove one and it's amazing! This reviewer just wants to complain about nothing. I think he got up on the wrong side of bed or something. I'm getting the base model though. I don't want or need all that extra stuff.

I have the SE version of this and it’s astounding how well the car drives. Everything is positioned in the interior exactly where it should be and it’s the kind of car you can just keep driving without ever getting beat up or fatigued from the ride. I will say that I really dislike the base wheels I have, but I plan to put 18’s on it at some point and really class it up since it already feels somewhat like a luxury car for half the price.

I test drove a 2019 sport trim. Great car. Steering assist was awesome, and I actually like the exhaust note. Can't beat the price after rebates. If you are considering a family sedan, you should give this a test drive.

I bought this on 7-2-18. It's a 2018 hyundai sonata limited with ultimate package. It's the 4 cylinder 2.4L base non turbo engine and the base 6 speed automatic version. It's black with black interior. I like your reviews on cars. I can clearly see you are a performance car lover and not a casual commuter like me. For a casual commuter like me, it's the perfect car. It looks nice inside and out, its got nice tech, a nice sounding infinity stereo, it's easy to use, easy to drive, and comfortable. I got it for $3,500 dollars off MSRP which is a good deal. I have a co worker who has owned a hyundai accent and a hyundai sonata and got 100,000 miles out of both with no trouble. Hyundai has a long track record for selling cars that last 100,000 miles with ease. I had 13 miles on it when i got this car and i waited until 300 miles to play with it a little. I wanted a little break in time first. I probably should have waited longer then 300 miles but since it will be driven gentle from now on, and it was driven gentle from 13 miles to 300 miles, i think I'm ok. I doubt I hurt anything. I usually don't care about this kind of stuff but i was curious after watching this video. I floored it from a stop with a full tank of gas and traction control on and the drive mode on comfort. (the normal default setting) on a flat surface in perfect weather. I counted a full ten seconds to get to 60mph. It might of been like 9.0 to 9.5 depending on how you pace your count. But your right, it was nothing impressive. But like you also said, a high percentage of drivers that buy this car don't care about that kind of stuff. They just casually commute from point A to point B on a daily bases and this car will be just fine for those type of buyers. I got The top speed to 118mph, but it runs smoothly at 105mph. After 105mph it starts acting a little shaky. But in a car like this, you are never gonna do any higher then like 85mph if your a casual commuter like me. At 85mph, it runs quiet and smooth. I only did this a couple times and before that, i drove it casual and will drive it casual from this point on because i wanna take care of this and i want it to last. In my opinion, This is the perfect car for a casual commuter that doesn't care about car enthusiast stuff. As far as that engine rattling noise you spoke of, i never hear it in my car. All base non turbo 4 cylinder car engines don't give off a wow factor sound. They are built for casual commuters, not for thrill seekers. I love this car and would recommend it to anyone that's looking for a nice fully loaded car that's easy to drive and gets good gas mileage and has a nice sounding stereo and has the best warranty you can get on a new car.

Wat Clayton, I have had this exact car for 15 months now and it is a sharp looking car, and rides nice and smooth. It turns many heads. I guess it is the color Electric blue. I just got my 2018 Hyundai Sonata SEL. The dealership that I bought my 2015 Elantra was looking for used Elantra's so I got a good trade in deal and it is a huge upgrade from what I had. I do see lots comments about how it looks, it looks way better in person vs online. I get lots compliments on it, its got great safety feature, technology and it drives very smooth. I haven't noticed that noise the engine makes in the video it could be the tester or could be because I have a different trim level.

I still love my 2017 Sonata Hybrid Limited w/Ultimate package. It has everything and more minus the Qi charging. It's got a 2.0 liter and most 2 liters sound good imo. However, if I were to park it next to an '18 model I would prefer the front of the '17 but the rear of the '18. Video doesn't do it justice, it does look nice in person and may take a little time for the look to grow on you.

While I do believe the refreshed look for the Hyundai Sonata is nice, I'm too very disappointed that both the panoramic roof and heated rear seat features were omitted from the Limited trim-level for 2018. Ironically, the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Limited that I filmed a review on back few years ago did in fact have both of those features equipped. I don't understand all the hate for this car. Personally I love the way it looks that's why I bought one. The new Accord is atrocious looking but I really like the SE Camry. The thing that did it for me though is pricing. Competitors couldn't come even close to matching the deals Hyundai had. $22k but after rebates, discounts, and the like I walked out paying $18k. I stole the damn car. I do wish I upgraded to the Eco with the 1.6t though. The 2.4 is utterly useless but can't complain too much as I'm averaging 34mpgs. Goal was a Subaru Legacy but Subarus service and sales team was the worst I've ever seen. Shame because my last car was a Legacy with over 300k miles. Do I love the Sonata? No. But price wise, looks, features, and comfort it couldn't be beat. Hyundai has a real sweet spot with those low MSRPs and standard features. My first Hyundai and maybe not my last.

I just got a brand new 2019 Sonata SE 3 days ago and I absolutely love it! Hands down the best car I've ever owned. It gives an amazingly quiet ride, smooth acceleration and comfortable to sit in. I currently own a 2012 SE 2.4 liter sport with dual exhaust, sport wheels, and spoiler lid. I think it looks nicer than the more recent versions. I’ve been disappointed with the new Sonatas playing it safe with designs like the Camry has for years. Now Genesises look amazing! That new G70 might possibly be my next car.

I do like the older generation better. This one is alright. I think Hyundai keeping the 2.4 liter with the 6 speed is a good idea for those who don't want turbos. I mean yes there are a lot of advantages to turbos but there are also a lot of disadvantages. I think Hyundai should continue to produce this one as well as some turbo options just so there is a variety. Also glad Hyundai hasn't gone with CVT's. The whole idea that Hyundai has is amazing. Blind Spot and Rear Cross Traffic as standard on all trims and other features are optional, GREAT idea. Hyundai really is trying for that "a car for everyone" motto as of now succeeding!

for all you haters,,,.. i have a 2015 hyundai sonata,,, it now has 107,000 miles, at 84k i replaced the front brakes,, at 92k i replaced the rear brakes,, i do my own oil changes at 12k miles, i have the same timing belt since day 1..... minimal repairs for suck a good car to drive for uber..... 7 months so far.. its considered a runner in my mind... for the price a great but,, it has 29k miles on it for 15,500..............

I had the 2013 Sonata. It got totaled after I hydroplaned last year. I actually miss it! & I have the 2017 Mazda 6. I miss the sensitive gas pedal making acceleration feel quick as hell, and the comfort. Plus the little things like more interior lighting, better speakers, the storage, heated seats and the head and legroom.

I owned the 13 optima (basically the sister car). Definately think they missed the mark on this one. Ironically, My 13 had the first wave of this 2.4L. It really pains me seeing this motor being detuned this much (the model year 13's had 200hp and 192ft lbs)

Panoraramic sunroof is discontinued ONLY because it was problematic. The carbon fiber frame didn’t flex with temperature change along with the gaskets causing squeaks and rattles. Several recalls did not fix the problem and many owners got new roofs to no avail. Mine was AWFUL and I got rid of my Sonata because of it.

Bosco Butterbear I had a 2015, and it was horrible! I have a Genesis now, and it pops and rattles constantly. Our new F-150 has a pano roof and no rattle or issues. So you’re correct that’s why they got rid of the pano roof!

I currently have an 09 Sonata Limited that I am trading in for a 2018 Limited. It has taken me a while for the grill to grow on me, but I like the rest of the car. I am opting for the 2.4 but I must say, it did not sound so great when the hood was open. Otherwise I like the throaty sound. Hyundai says 16.3 cubic feet trunk though, not 15 1/2. I can not wait to drive one. The car is not at my dealer yet so I have not had the chance to. The power, I am not a motor head so I am fine with the 185hp. My biggest complaint with my 09 was the ride so if it is softer, then it should be perfect for me.

I have the 2016 Sonata and the biggest issue I have with the center arm rest is the stitching. The actual stitched portion is in the wrong place. Having stitching pattern in the corner where your elbow rests is a recipe for disaster. IMO, it should be in the dead center or all the way towards the bottom edge.

Sport driving mode is great when you're driving in the mountains. Normal mode keeps upshifting and makes the engine lug at low rpms.

Doug N yeah the transmission does everything it can to keep revs low, but sport mode really wakes the car up and makes it fun enough for what it is.

2015 sonata bought brand new, limited, 2.4L engine, at only 25k+ miles, the engine blew a piston and had to get replaced. At 29k miles, the transmission stopped working and pushing the accelerator did nothing but rev the car, even in drive. Took it to the dealer for that one and they couldn’t figure out the issue so already replaced the whole thing there. The two main pieces of the car already replaced at 29k miles. I will not buy another Hyundai. This is just my opinion, I know that not all do this, but it is extremely unfortunate to get one that does especially when you pay a pretty high price for a fully loaded car.

You should have tried the ECO. The 1.6 ECO does have 195 pftorque at 1500 rpm. it's faster than the new accord and does have 44mpg Highay.
