What's Nicholson talking about? MVG is the best/greatest player of all time. Taylor 'was' the best and currently is the most 'successful', though that's mainly down to the amount of World Championships he won and when he won them. If MVG was playing in the same era as Taylor did for the bulk of his career, he'd possibly have a better, if not unbeaten record in the World Championship and would have lost even less matches than he does now.

Jay Smith MVG definitely more naturally talented than Taylor. But MVG will never be as consistent as Taylor over a period of so many years. Also there are far more tournaments these days. Taylor at his best would always be a match for MVG.

Jay Smith It’s not just about averages though. Over a long match MVG’s peak averages are not that different to Taylor. Which tells you that MVG struggles to keep his top form going for longer periods. Taylor is a better match player, but concede that MVG’s peak is higher

@@superteacher1000 - Players today are playing in more tournaments all around the world and are playing in an era where players in the top 32 (or more) routinely hit around the 100+ average mark. In Taylor's day they played less tournaments, travelled less and Taylor only had to play his C game to trounce virtually all his competitors, who had to be playing their A++ game to average around or more than 100. That made it much easier for him to perform week in week out as there was rarely any pressure put on him. I've played a fair amount of sport and it's much easier to hit big numbers consistently when you have little to no competition. Anyway, the only 'fair' way to compare the two is by their numbers, and as I said, MVG routinely hits numbers that Taylor only hit at his absolute best.

Jay Smith True but what’s to say that Taylor wouldn’t have been better if he was at his peak in this era? Always hard to compare players like this. Taylor leads the head to head though, and that won’t change! One thing is for sure though - these two are way ahead of anyone else either past or present.

well they have step up to the plate and James wade doesn't score heavily enough to test the likes of Rob Cross, Peter Wright, Gary Anderson or Mcg. He can do it on the odd occasion but not consistent enough

I agree. He lost way to many matches in those top tournaments for a word number 1. Taylor rarely lost in 1st or 2nd rounds , that's what made him the best darts player to date

Taylor -during his most succesfull years played miles better than his opponents.He forced them to practice more and to play a higher standart if they wanted to beat him. He has put the game to an entirely new level. Without taylor, the standart wouldn't be as high as it is now. The same happens with michael right now. And the standard will raise too, so maybe in ten years a new “best player ever“will come up. That is darts. It always grows and evolves. In the end the only thing you can say is that phil taylor was the most important player for the sport (yet)

Darts, unlike most other sports in terms of the skills required and equipment used, is virtually the same now as it has always been, making it much easier to compare eras. Just look at the numbers each player has posted. MVG routinely hits numbers that Taylor only did at his peak. That is the fairest way to compare the players and MVG blows everyone else (Taylor included) out of the water.

As a great as MVG is, it's a common theme of his opposition not turning up in finals. 77 average from Wade here, disgraceful. Sick of people handing it to MVG, he's great when under no pressure. But when I've seen him under pressure from Cross, Gary.. I've seen MVG crack. All you've got to do is try and play darts, DeZwann showed it earlier this year too.
