I got fitted for i500 and have started to play them . I found I can control the distance very well with this club. It’s nice to know you can make a shot and have the confidence in your irons that it’s gonna get there. Ping i500 is the best out of all these clubs. I love them and I have tried all of them. Good video James!

Thanks to videos like this, I got fitted today for the Mizuno 919 Forged irons (Plano TX) at Watters Creek GC. Over an hour of tinkering around with shafts and heads. I’d say the final 10 shots were amazing. Can’t wait to get them in play.

I traded up my Ping G's for the i500's for one simple reason; accuracy. An added bonus was shot shaping abilities, the i500 allowed me to create shots better. The downside was distance, the G's went further, at least a club further but the dispersion was greater. At least this was my impression between those two clubs. Later this summer I will be fitted for Mizunos and look forward to that comparison. Love the videos!

Got the i500's shortly after they were introduced. Went to a highly recommended club fitter and hit all the usual suspects. After hitting various clubs and shafts, the i500's were the obvious best choice for me. (I wasn't worried about distance, more so accuracy and feel). Got in about 2 months worth of play before the weather turned (I live in Ohio), and am extremely pleased with the purchase. I opted for the traditional lofts and not the retro or power lofts. Long and very forgiving.

Went in for a fitting and the P790 was the club where it didn’t matter where you hit it on the face, the end result was closer to target and further then the JPX. I’m sure it’s different from person to person but that’s why I feel a fitting is necessary to make the final call.

I've been playing Ping for over 10 years - i10's and i5's. But, last weekend I tested both the AP3 and i500. After an hour of hitting stiff and regular shafts in both, I bought the AP3's. Distance was basically similar - both at least a club better than my i10's. In the end, the AP3 just suited my swing better and gave me the ball flight I was looking for - a little lower. I now just want to get on course and play. Thanks James - great reviews and excellent advice.

The problem with comparing 7 irons is that they all have different lofts. So the Taylormade is probably equivalent to the 6 iron on the Mizuno. Clubs should have lofts stamped on them not numbers. Enjoyed the video though. My MP25’s are safe for now though.
@JamesRobinsonGolf6 жыл бұрын
Hey Terry, the lofts are still consistent with the set though. Thanks for watching
@richardsdiaz16 жыл бұрын
Terry Wright I’ve often thought the same thing. However, James’s test has me rethinking this. Did you notice his spin rates? They were all right around 5500. I’m not so sure the loft is so all-important when it come to this category.
@terrywright65716 жыл бұрын
Lefty SoCal Golfer I take your point but a few years ago I changed a set of Taylormade burners for some Mizuno Mp64s and it was interesting to note that the length of shaft and loft were one club different. If not by those parameters how do you define a 7 iron ? And then how to you compare between brands?
@richardsdiaz16 жыл бұрын
Terry Wright I really don’t know. It’s why I was so excited to see this comparison. I wanted to see how these clubs compared to each other. Adding clubs like these ended up being really expensive for me... I’ve spent a lot of time working on my gappings since I bought the AP3s. I found that i had to effectively change every club in my bag except driver, 3 wood and putter to make it work. The only club I didn’t change was my 54 SW but even that I’ve bent 1 degree strong. For these reasons and more I’d be concerned about getting any set that is even longer than my AP3s are. From this point forward I’ll be more interested in feel and dispersion from this category.

Up until last year I used the Nike pro combo Irons from 2011,with the solid blades up to 8 iron ,as great as these clubs were I struggled on bad golf days . AP3 are what I have now with the Vokey wedges and I can honestly say these are great and I don't miss the Nike forged set at all now ,another plus point is the wedges stay looking better too .My game with long irons with the AP3 has come on so much better ,with plenty of practice I now hit a decent 4 iron with confidence .Think I would be happy with any of these clubs .Great honest review James .

Great video. For me consistency is key then feel. The Mizuno was the most consistent it seemed. What good is distance if you can’t confidently hit the number you need. The 790 is a full club strong at 30.5 loft for a 7 iron. So you should compare that to your current 6 iron to be fair. The problem with all these hollow irons is the inability to hit your number. I hit my 7 Wilson V6 Forged (35 degrees) 165-170. That being said my numbers on the 790 were 180-210. I cannot sensibly put a club in my bag with a 30 yard dispersion difference same with the i500
@richardsdiaz16 жыл бұрын
Scott Hudson this is why I didn’t but the P790! Front to back dispersion was not what I needed!

Wilson V6 irons are awesome but not a players distance iron, just players iron category. 7 iron loft is 35 degrees or close to it.
@todddelgiudice82586 жыл бұрын
We agree again!! haha that's why I returned them for blades - that and a lack of workability plus the need to buy at least one more wedge to fill that gaping hole between my 56deg and the 790 gap wedge lol.

Thanks to Titleist AP3 I have fallen in love with the game of golf again! I’m in my mid 40’s and I don’t see myself as a better player. I broke 90 last year but will probably not break 80. My swing speed is moderate and I hit the 7 iron around 130m/140y. I chose True Temper AMT Red Regular shaft because I like it’s lightness and high ball flight. Used to play TaylorMade’s game improvement irons like RSi 1 and Burner 2.0 but I learned to hate the strong lofts, heavy weights and clumpiness of a game improvement iron. With AP3 I can even launch the 4 iron from the turf without any difficulties. With TaylorMade I couldn’t even get decent shots with my 5 iron...

Pick the iron that feel more comfortable in your hand. It's more about the swing than the club. I'm still sore that Hogan's are no longer made. I've had my RedLines for well over twenty years and they still feel great. I've tried many other clubs but always come back to my Hogan's.

Definitely going to try the i500's when I go and get fitted. Only concern is if the gaps below the 7i would get too big. Currently carry around 170y and any further would make it awkward. The retro lofts seems to make them spin and balloon too much which isn't ideal either. They look exceptional tho...
@jeanferret94976 жыл бұрын
Like Fixby my home course requires precision and shot making. These superfast irons may suit a sloggers course with long par 3s but no use for a knock down seven into a breeze or a gentle fade to a tight pin. The 790 is super long but the short irons can go waaay too far.

I personally hate seeing multi-piece irons labelled as forged. As far as I'm concerned, unless it's a one-piece forging, like the Mizuno, it isn't "Forged" Forged face welded to a cast body, or vice versa? No thanks.

Thank you so much for doing this review! I hoped you would do something like this but never expected you to cover all 4 of the clubs that most interest me. As an AP3 owner (who loves them) this test just reassured me that I’m not giving anything up from a performance standpoint by sticking with them for now! I know they aren’t the sweetest feeling of the bunch, nor the longest. But it’s close enough that I don’t feel compelled to make a switch right now. Also, it looked like the AP3s WERE amongst the best when it came to dispersion!

I hit all these irons with a fitter 3 separate times. I wanted the Pings or JPX but the 790’s were the most consistent each time for distance and lateral misses. If you check your results the 790’s had the smallest lateral deviation and smallest length dispersion. Yes they go farther but are more consistent. I ordered the 790’s but I’ll have to recalibrate my distances. The added forgiveness over my current gamers will be welcome now that I cant get out to practice as much.

Just ordered the 790s today. Gotta just adjust to the additional 25-30 yards i just gained on my old x-18s. Tried like 5 or 6 different irons and the feel and distance i got with these was unmatched. Callaway apex was the only club that came even close.

FWIW, I have been playing the i500s since they came out. My game has improved --61 YO 5.5 Index. Hit the 7 iron 160-170, depending on the day/conditions, lie, me, etc. Feel is fine. Very rare that I can't dial it in, although I do find that the wedge doesn't fly as far (proportionately) as the others, so I have a gap. Looking at some newbies, but honestly think I've found as much distance as I need.

I'm thinking about doing a combo set of 919 Forged and Tours, the only problem I see is the tours are 2 degrees weaker. Does adding or taking a degree away from the iron mess with the feel or durability of the iron? I really want to do the combo set but don't want to mess up the irons by adjusting the loft. I was thinking about weaking the Forged by 1 and adding 1 to the tours to get them to blend nicely.

Being a lefty, I find it hard to replace my Nike VR Pro Blades. Overall, I would go with the best feel irons like the Mizuno. I’ve own the MP 68 before and from what I’ve researched, mizuno irons feel really soft. But looking at the Taylormade P790, those yardage might get me to switch, but being a lefty...I find it hard to get properly fitted. Not too many left handed clubs around my local area. Great video, would like to see your ball flight, just to get a good idea of the dispersion rate.

I've tried various 'powerful' irons, problem is when you play a links course with small greens and rubbish at the back you don't want to be hitting 7- irons that can go anything from 145-180 and then run for 15+ yards = reload. Found myself hitting the shortest club I could to make sure I didn't carry the green, and then invariably come up short! (I play a Srixon Z765)

I play with Power Builts goal post alignment that I bought in 1989, still have the original grips. 12 handicap. Should i get new clubs? Has technology improved? Can I expect better scores just with new clubs?
@JamesRobinsonGolf6 жыл бұрын
You can definitely expect more distance and control mate! The rest is up to you!
@Mitch19776 жыл бұрын
Not at all sir. If you’re gaming the 89 Power Builts, just wrap some tape on the grips, sand the faces with some 60 grit, & keep knocking the the pin outa the hole 🕳

Flashy Paws I’m kidding with the guy. Of course it doesn’t make sense. Lol tape those bastards up & keep swinging!

Out of interest James, what would be an average long to short dispersion for you own clubs over10 shots ? The distance control on the hot irons, in my opinion, is awful. How can you play golf not knowing where your ball will land ?

I was golfing with a friend and tried his Ping i200 and liked them so much I went to check them out. Of course I stumbled unto the i500 and feel in love. I will say the i210 feel a little better but just couldn't beat the performance of the i500 (6-7 yards less, 7 iron). The Cobra f9's I play are long, as long as the i500, but the feel combined with the distance of the i500's is very hard to beat. Can you tell me of the four you test which has the heavier swing weight? I really like to feel the clubhead during the swing. Thanks

Mizuno for me... Tried all but it's the feel for me. Agree on the lofts though - not really comparing like for like with the distances. All about the gaps for me so the Mizuno lofts are a decent compromise at the top and bottom ends.

Another great video, James. Really useful, too, as I'm planning to get myself some new irons!

Thanks mate! Enjoy your new irons! What you thinking?

It's got to be the i500s :D

James, the AP3 sounded great out here on the internet. To tell the truth, with the right shaft, any one of these irons would be great.

On the p790 you said that 170 yard shot would be ob, but the 169.9 shot with the i500 is ok? Seems they both have some issue with dispersion. On that note, I think I'm definitely picking up one or the other soon.

😂 I just get excitable sometimes! Hahaha thanks for he comment mate

Love my P790's, all comes down to what feels right for you. Not sure about your comments on inconsistent distance of P790 as i500 suggested similar issues on your test. As you say the remarkable thing about these clubs is that they still perform when the strike is below par.

Can you tell me what the loft differences were between the clubs? I think the p790 are 2-3 degrees stronger than Titleist!

I'm having a hell of a time swinging my JPX919 .... Came off the JPX 900 hot metal and the 919s are nice but, not forgiving at all.

Hi James, I'm a 15 handicapper with relatively low club head speed. JPX 919 forged is my pick, but what shaft would you recommend to go with these gorgeous irons. I like NS Pro 850 regular but not sure whether it a good match. Your advice please. Tks v m

Went from Mizubo 850s forged to the ap3s. Definite step up. Hate to sell the 850s though.

Should you not have tested the Tmbs instead of AP3s?

ok after watching I remember having a chat with u earlier in the year when I had p790 irons, one goes 160 next time it goes 170 no consistency. Is the added distance from ping over the mizuno coming from loft difference ??
@golfdreamr6 жыл бұрын
i500 7 iron is 1.5 degree's stronger than the Mizuno. 30.5 compared to 32.

Hi James! I just want to start off by saying I'm a huge fan of your channel, great job on the videos. I have decided i'm going to buy new irons for the 2019 year and I've been going back and forth between the P790 irons and the Mizuno forged irons. I currently play at a 17 handicap and wanted to get your feelings between the two clubs. I know you mentioned in the past that you hate the flyers you occasionally get on the P790s. Which club do you feel is easiest to hit and flight? I do plan on getting fitted but I just wanted your opinion. Thanks again for all of the hard work you do on the channel and I really hope to hear back from you.

The review just confused me more than I was. I will be 69 in September, am recovering from Rotator surgery and was in my day a high handicap player most of the time. When playing regularly twice a week, I was able to bring my scores down to the mid 80's, but those days are gone. I need a new set of clubs. Don't want low end. I always shop for quality. I need your suggestion on the right clubs I should attempt to be fitted for. You're site is great! Thanks for your help.

Love the video James. I just hit the i500 and the AP3 and loved them both. The sales kid was great and recommended a half in longer shaft for the i500. Got a bit of sticker shock when the sales guys said they were $1,200 plus. Am I just being cheap? Are there any other brands similar to those two irons?

I agree the Mizuno feels better than AP3 but it is bigger, heavier, looks more bulky. Im interested in trying the tour model.

I'm off to Titleist in November for a fitting. Not sure if AP2/AP3 will be for me .. currently have CB's. Th only issue I get with fittings is that all the shafts come with std sized grips & I'm used to MCC plus 4 with 3 layers of tape. I always seem to come away unconvinced after not striking the ball as well as I can do. Has any one been to Titleist for a fitting that knows if they have shafts with thicker grips or not? For me, front to back dispersion is paramount, I dabbled with Callaway CF16's which went a. lot further, but the dispersion was mental front to back, so they had to go.

Consistent distance is what i value. Want to be confident where approach will land. Think mizuno was most consistent in this test if u throw out longest and shortest distance of each
