This is a good one! Very full band. All for one and one for all, this is how the group rolls. All my favorite chicks, Blue Angel Alba Armengou, looking mousy, hitting licks on horn, Casanova blowing sax. Barcelona made the U.S. news on 9/11. The TV showed a sea of people celebrating Catalonian Independence Day, 9/11. I think I'm going to buy the Catalan flag with the star on it and let it fly because of my love for the band. It reminds me of the flag of Texas, which also has a "lone star." Looked up Luz de Gas on "Trip Advisor." A girl complained about "6 Euro" beers and "all these old men with young girls." I said, "Hey, I'm old! Maybe ...."

Nice playing by maestro Chamorro, and great support from the rhythm section as well. This may not be the most difficult thing they've ever done, but it's far from the easiest, I'm sure. I suspect there was a fair amount of rehearsing involved, but it was worth it -- they sound very professional!
@davidbradley13675 жыл бұрын
These guys mow through so many arrangements it is dizzying. I once went to sleep with this channel on and the SAJB played all night and into the next day. I imagine they rehearse with a great deal of efficiency. I hope they write an instruction manual someday about their methods.
@chanelops5 жыл бұрын
@@davidbradley1367 As you may know, Joan has given a number of interviews (both on and off camera) where he discusses his methods. And they had the Jazz Education Stage last week to discuss it in person. Nonetheless, I agree with you that a "manual" or book of some kind would be very valuable. But they are so busy I'm not sure this is going to happen...
@chanelops5 жыл бұрын
@@davidbradley1367 But since you brought up the subject, here is a story from a Spanish newspaper that I translated last week, talking about Joan's methods. (I already posted this on another comment section, but thought I might as well repeat it here, since it fits with your comment) El Periodico, 9/4/19 Joan Chamorro, the teacher who hooks children on jazz The secret of the leader of the Sant Andreu Big Band, which includes musicians between the ages of 7 and 21 and from which talents such as Andrea Motis have come, is to make sure they enjoy the learning, and to not overwhelm the pupils The Sant Andreu Jazz Band was born 13 years ago thanks to the encouragement of a musician and visionary master: Joan Chamorro. Under his wing have grown outstanding talents that now are out on their own, including Andrea Motis, Rita Payés, Eva Fernández, Magalí Datzira and Marc Martín. And today he continues to churn out magnificent musicians such as the violinist and singer, Elia Bastida, who will soon fly solo. The secret? His students approach music, and in particular jazz, in a relaxed manner. Minimal pressure, or rather, only that pressure which they put on themselves. "I have a zen mentality, I'm a vegetarian and I try to see everything from the bright side," explains Chamorro at his home, where they are rehearsing some of the pieces that his band, made up of young people between 7 and 21 years old, will play with the great tenor sax player Scott Hamilton this weekend in the sixth edition of Jazzing Sant Andreu, a festival that starts on Thursday. "All the band members started the same way: listening to standards and practicing, although that happens simultaneously with learning technique." That’s what Hugo, a sharp kid who's hooked on the trombone, is doing. "Jazz is a language, and only by listening to it does it become part of you. For example Alba Armengou started with me playing and listening to songs like 'Sentimental mood' when she was 6 or 7 years old." Like her, no one came to the group in love with jazz, but little by little, without pressuring them, by listening to John Coltrane or Tommy Flanagan, they have been discovering a whole universe of cadences, rhythms and colors. "Here you don't study music because you play an instrument or to pass exams, but to enjoy. When you like something, you even enjoy the effort and that's why you try to go further," Chamorro says. It is enough to see the enthusiasm that everyone brings to the rehearsals, held as always in the teacher’s narrow and elongated house in Sant Andreu, in what was his old living room (now completely soundproofed). Being crowded does not make keep the group from thoroughly delving into the repertoire for the next concert. Chamorro does not charge members of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band for classes; in return their students also do not receive money for the performances. The proceeds are used to finance the band’s records, which are many, as evidenced by the numerous CD covers hanging in the rehearsal room. Seeing the passion and energy that everyone puts into the rehearsal, it's easy to understand their system. They look super-motivated, tuned-in to the slightest signals. Hyperconnected. "What's cool about this is that sometimes you realize that others have learned the tune better than you, and you come out wanting to go home and study more," one said one band member. Chamorro insists that the trick is to "enjoy the studying, to get into the sound as if you were going to meditate, to focus only on it". After all, only by breathing with the music can get one get excited about it. "If the Sant Andreu Jazz Band puts goose bumps on people, it's because we live jazz deeply and not just in concerts. You have to enjoy every moment, including the rehearsals too!" It's not always easy, of course. But last Monday they sounded great, playing 'You go to my head' with vocals by violinist Elia Bastida, accompanied by piano, bass, drums and saxes blowing to the max. Hugo, one of the youngest, who is starting to make some progress with the band, started playing the trombone only four months ago, and contributes not only with this instrument, but also with his voice. "I always encourage everyone to sing, although so far more girls tend to sing," Chamorro admits. His system is acclaimed all over the world. So much so that this year the band’s Jazzing Sant Andreu festival for the first time includes an international campus for teachers and young people who want to get to know this proven method of learning. And if that is not enough, they should talk to the nearly 60 musicians who in these last 13 years have learned to love jazz with their 'big band'.

@@chanelops Yeah, I read that one the first time it was posted. Very interesting. What an amazing translation! You some kind of writer. I thought I was reading an article that was originally written in English. I would want to know how many run-throughs of an arrangement the band needs to have to get a piece ready to go. Most professional session guys would have a number like this one ready to go after around four run-throughs. Then, they are getting tired and screaming to roll tape.

A beautifully smooth and inspired interpretation of Dexter Gordon's 1966 original. Keeping the laid back feel but with a smooth as silk modernity to it. Nice solos, although it might have been nice if the piano had taken its turn as on the original recording. Excellent performance from all as usual.
@davidbradley13675 жыл бұрын
The recording engineering is amazing, quite a feat. Joan could use a little "hall" reverb on his sax in this room. The sax comes off very dry. It would not be cheating -- rather it would make the sound of the horn rise to the rest of the music. There is a purity issue, but a little verb would be okay, as long as you don't notice it.
