In all fairness, Filip Zadina is as big of a bust at this point than Jesperi Kotkaniemi, so it didn't matter which player Montreal took, Brady Tkachuk was who they should have taken. In fact, the 2018 draft is looking even weaker in hindsight than we thought it would be at the time. It wasn't a draft I payed particularly close attention to because my team didn't have a first rounder, and the 2nd round pick they took a guy from Sweden, and the 3rd rounder was from the Czech Republic. But looking back as a Bruins fan, the 2018 draft is probably our worst 1 in the past decade at least, and depth, or lack there of, is certainly is a factor.

Hey Steve, I'm a Canucks fan who's been listening to you for at least six years, I've lost track of when I started but I know it's been at least that long. I love your videos and podcasts, they're so much fun and I love the passion and energy you always have. I also think that you have one of the best hockey perspective out there, I think you see and understand the game extremely well and I like how you always try to see things from different perspectives. There's something that has frustrated me a little over the last couple years though. I've never watched you for Canucks coverage but I feel like it's the Canadian team you pay the least attention to by a fair bit, maybe Calgary too. It would be awesome if you did put a little more time into the Canucks when you have a chance. This video's a good example, you pretty much said nothing about the Canucks draft pick and it's not like there aren't things to say about it, it's quite surprising Hughes was available and he promises to be a very important piece for the Canucks. All in all I love your videos and podcasts, I'm not going to stop watching anytime soon. You Jesse and Adam are awesome and I hope you keep doing what you're doing for a long time. A tiny tiny bit more Canucks coverage would be awesome, I'd love to hear what you guys have to say! Cheers

Now in 2022, the Hurricanes have both the 2nd AND 3rd overall picks from this draft and both are locked up long term to hopefully be long time pieces on a contending team. Funny how things change in just a few years. Shame we couldn't keep Fox too, but still.

Kotkaniemi played wing all last year, because he bumped up into another league and the team was heavy at center already. Fair enough, but that's a year not playing center. I dunno, I think it's easy and fashionable to make fun of Bergevin these days. But as a Leaf fan, I can't speak highly enough of Bergevin. I think he knocked this one out of the park, Mr. Molson. You should give him a lifetime contract.

FTR--Canes partial STH here. Hate to see Hanny leave, but the front office wanted a shake up. This is how you do it. I've been to practices and have always been impressed how fast his hands are. Not sure if he'll ever reach the peak so many expected, but if motivated he could be a true asset for the Flames. Lindholm--we always expected more. Not sure if he's peaked or not, and CERTAINLY not the bust Boychuk was within the organization, but he never turned into what we needed/expected in NC. And then him wanting too much money for lack of production, it was obvious he was out the door. Still excited for what we got, especially if Fox turns into what so many people say he could be in a couple seasons. #isitoctoberyet

Steve as a Harry Potter fan and a hockey fan I loved that you threw in a Cormac reference haha :P
@jacklandon99336 жыл бұрын
I know the Carolina-Calgary trade had bigger names going both ways, but I am not sure the most effective trade wasn't Washington using Grubauer to get Brooks Orpik's contract off the books scot-free AND pick up a 2nd round choice. Not only that, but with the Avs buying out Orpik, he may end up re-signing with Washington for a much more reasonable number, knowing he is getting paid anyway. With his contract plus the $2.5+ that Grubi would have cost off the Cap's cap, they have the money to re-sign all the players from the Cup-winning team that they want to re-sign. Brian MacLellan is pretty good at this GMing thing.

Here's the trade from the flames perspective: Adam Fox is a great prospect who they tried to sign but something wasn't working. It is rumoured that he didn't want to sign with a Canadian team. If the flames let him go another year then teams start to catch on and his value drops. They've also got tons of other great D prospects in Valimaki, Andersson, and Kylington. Dougie Hamilton was fantastic, but he took penalties at AWFUL times (late in the third every game against the ducks last playoffs). I heard rumours that he didn't mesh well with the room and may have even had slight attitude issues. Loosing Ferland hurts. He's not good enough to play an entire season with Monahan and Gaudreau, but he can still contribute a ton of grit, speed, and he's got a fantastic shot. I'm also optimistic for the flames since these are players that Bill Peters coached the last 4 seasons (all three in the case of Hanifin). He wouldn't have been okay with the trade if he didn't think they had more to show and if he didn't trust them completely. Lindholm is definitely an upgrade and Ferland and a right shot forward (finally), and Hanifin may not have the same offensive production now that Hamilton does, but he's much younger (its so rare that a defenceman plays as an 18 year old). It's also worth noting that playing alongside Mark Giordano was greatly contributing to Hamilton's success, as it was doing for Brodie before they moved him.

It’s hard to say that Dougie Hamilton is and will be better than Noah hanniffin espcially due to what we just saw in the draft. What I mean by that is the theme of this years draft was smaller puck moving defence-man and that is exactly what Noah is. I do agree that in years prior Dougie would for sure be looked at as the better defence man; so if the NHL is changing I believe our assessments should aswell
