I've always been a Volvo owner and I went to an Outback. My last Volvo wagon was a 2004 XC70, which they stopped producing in 2016. The V90 XC is out of my price range, so I looked at the 2015 V60 and 2018 models of the Outback and Alltrack. I didn't really like the V60 (felt like an expensive Ford Focus), thought the Alltrack felt cheap (and I test-drove the Execline), but instantly fell in love with the Outback, which is what I ultimately bought. My biggest problem with the Alltrack was that inside it felt and looked exactly like a Golf Sportwagen, except it was almost 10k more. The back seats felt like cardboard. I really like the exterior look of the Alltrack, and I really liked the panoramic sunroof. But it just seemed like a Golf Wagon with a slight lift. The Outback on the other hand is comfortable, spacious, and better off-road. It doesn't feel or look cheap inside or out. I just love it.

@@chasingcars I'm late to this review because I haven't been in this market till now. I've watched this multiple times because your reviews (Tom) always seem to hit the mark for me. I always seek fun-to-drive cars that can overtake quickly at country road speeds (my cars pretty much are only for long distance touring), yet I now find I also need AWD and raised ground clearance. So the Alltrack seems to tick all the right boxes (2nd hand as this will be an additional car for me and I am budgeting 30-35k). I haven't driven either yet but I'm keen to ask you about Alltrack TSI vs TDI - which do you think I'd be happier with long term, and would it be by a big margin or would it be close? I ask because you're a strong proponent of the petrol, but for daily use, rather than open road?

I've had an AllTrack for about 6 months (Cali, USA). I absolutely love this car. Easy to drive, great upscale styling, holds my bicycle lying flat inside, fits in my driveway. I had a BMW 325XI wagon and this car seems lighter, more fun to drive and tighter. And the infotainment system w/ Carplay is great. It could have a little more power, a little better economy, and be a little peppier off the line (it lugs a little) but overall I really love this car. And a great price point, too.

Never mind, I have read more comments and realized that Australia calculates usable cargo space (below rear seats) versus U.S. total cargo space. American market Subaru Outback is rated at 1005 Liters vs. 860 Liters in the Golf Alltrack.

Just a note, that Subaru is updating the Outback in the Australian market some time in 2018. The US already has the update, and it's got some significant upgrades inside, with a much nicer central cluster, new infotainment system and double-glazed front windows.

Interesting that the VW fits into the niche the Outback occupied so well up to 2009, i.e. before they turned it from a AWD estate car into something far closer to a mainstream SUV. So when I come to replace my 2006 Outback (and that isn't any time soon) the VW will be closer to the frame than the current Outback. A pity but it seems Subaru are more inclined to design for the USA than for Europe.

Colin Mill Someone hit me a couple of months ago and I went from my 2009 Outback to a 2016 outback. The 2009 I would say was a wagon. The 2016 is more of a suv. It is an SUV. The all track is what I am replacing my outback with because I don't like the new ones.

@mo-215
@mo-215 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. VW does need to up their actual AWD system to truly compete with Subaru AWD system. I much prefer the VW from a daily driving experience but for the very rough mountain dirt roads we drive, the Subaru system is superior. If you're mostly needing AWD for wet pavement and realistically never go off road, the VW is a better experience. If you're truly needing a capable AWD system for steep dirt and mud, loose rocks, etc. Then the Subaru is superior.

In America, the grille of the 2018 Subaru is mostly blacked out with one horizontal "bar" (chromed or silver) going horizontally; the grill in your Subaru is more like the 2017's. The wheels look more like the 2017 Subaru Limited in America. For the rear seats in the Limited edition Subaru, they are heated; didn't notice that on your model, though the Limited edition has the rear seat vents, not the Premium model. If this car were in America, it wouldn't be a 2018.

Thanks, Greg - you’re quite right. We just date cars differently here in Australia - if it’s sold in 2018 it’s a 2018, whereas the US introduces model years much earlier.

Tom, great review. It’d be helpful to also discuss towing and spare tyres. Space savers suck and in my opinion are dangerous when you’re sitting on ‘80kmh on the M1. Particularly if you’ve got the kids in the car, in the pouring rain with cars coming up the rear at 110. Around town, no issues, but on a trip... is a full size spare an option on the VW?
@chasingcars
@chasingcars 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, Cam - I'll make sure to take that on board. There's no optional full-size spare on the Golf Alltrack which will definitely be a factor for those looking to do long distance driving or light off-roading more often. As for towing, here are the relevant stats here; Alltrack can tow more but has less than half the towball download capacity: Outback - 170kg towball load, 750kg unbraked, 1,700kg braked Alltrack - 80kg towball load, 750kg unbraked, 2,000kg braked.

Can't say I agree with the narrative... Ive come from 20 years of VW's and there is little comparison. The VW is certainly not as reliable as ive had a wealth of problems with the brand with finally lead me to switch. The Subaru's 8.9" clearance is a big plus and full time all wheel drive yet still better economy is another huge plus. The VW's feel cramped inside compared to the Subaru and the sheer visibility from the drivers seat is a big step up. I can go on, but as a long time VW sufferer, I am impressed with Subaru, which we switched to a few years back. Oh yeah, about that ground clearance and wll wheel preformance of the Subie: watch some more and you'll see whats missing from this review.

In the US the 2018 Outback has a different grill and is more attractive visually. I actually really like the design of the Golf but the AWD and ground clearance make the Subaru more capable in snow or offroad. Also, I actually prefer the interior of the 2018 Outback

Interesting... in the U.S., the Subaru Outback is clearly a bigger car with bigger interior volume, including a larger cargo capacity than the Golf Alltrack. I don’t get how the Golf Alltrack has a larger cargo area “down under”-it seems identical to the U.S. version. Also, it seems to me that the Jetta Alltrack vs. Outback would be a better comparison...

Australia and the US must calculate cargo area differently. Subaru Outback - Australia: 512 liters (18.08 cu.ft) / 1801 liter (63.6 cu.ft) USA: 35.5 cu.ft (1005 liters) / 73.3 cu.ft (2075 liters) According to US measurements the Outback has much more luggage space than the Golf Alltrack both with seats up and down. Seats Up: 35.5 cu.ft vs. 30.4 cu.ft Seat Down: 73.3 cu.ft vs. 66.5 cu.ft

@FlowStateNewOrleans
@FlowStateNewOrleans 5 жыл бұрын
In markets where both exist, the Passat Alltrack is definitely the competition for the Outback and the VW is far superior. The Outback is a much bigger car than the compact Golf. In markets (like the US) where Subaru sells the Crosstrek and VW sells the Golf Alltrack, those are the two that should be compared and, for my money, the VW wins again by a landslide.

Explained at the 1:15 mark. Passat Alltrack is $50,790+. Most Outbacks transact for close to $40k, making the Golf Alltrack a more realistic consideration for buyers who mainly shop on price; also as mentioned the Golf has the bigger cargo capacity of these two.

Why the constant phrase on Subaru Reliability? The verdict is still out on the no maintenance, never maintenance CVT. Subaru got so shaken on the issue they extended coverage on the CVT to 10 yrs 100,000 Miles. Then what? CVTs are not repaired but replaced to the tune of $7,200. Recent years with the 2.5 engine has been highlighted by excessive engine oil loss where Subaru defends itself by stating that 1 quart of oil added every 1200, heck that’s normal. CR has quietly stepped away from that issue. Prior to that it was blown head gaskets. Yea, sure, Subaru doesn’t have issues.

Is it common to use kilowatts over horsepower in Australia when referring to engine power? Focking lovely. I wished we did the same. Inconsistencies in units are horrible.

Yeah, the kilowatt is our standard measurement of engine power. Horsepower is very, very occasionally used but only really by the tuning or muscle car set.
@kisielthe1st
@kisielthe1st 6 жыл бұрын
Well here technically is the standard. At the dealer you'll get a list of available engines with the power in kilowatts. Your registration papers will also mention engine power in kilowatts. But everyone says horsepower and it drives me crazy. Soviets did one thing right and that was unit standardization. Even their aviation is metric, unlike the rest of the world following imperial measurements for god knows what reason. Thanks for the response. I wished subaru would go back to making the outback a station wagon like it used to be in the 1st and 2nd gen. Nowadays it's just yet another boring shitty SUV/crossover. That VW on the other hand looks lovely.

Love both wagons and I currently own a 2014 Outback, but the CVT issues for the Outback are cause for concern and not to mention the all too common and dreaded head gasket issue. Research CVT and head gasket issues for Subarus and you'll see numerous complaints. Only way I'd buy another Outback is if they bring back the manual transmission which they got rid of in 2014. I will definitely go test drive the VW Alltrack with 6 speed manual transmission, looks super fun to drive.

I understand your review formula, but this makes no sense. You compare on price, ignore the fact that outback has a higher level of equipment, is taller, has a higher ground clearance, higher off road capability and then throw in handling (Driver satisfaction) as a point of differentiation. It is like comparing two cars of the same color. I don't expect you to agree given your vw leanings, but for me, made in Japan is also important.

shayne fitzgerald good thing there’s a manual mode. Keep it in a low gear, and don’t auto creep. Super simple. A CVT is an instant fail, period. It’s physically unable to handle more load heavy tasks, and simultaneously craps out on performance and efficiency as well.

Contrary to what you’re stating the Passat is the true competitor to the Outback. Much bigger and luxurious than the Golf. I bargained a new Passat Alltrack down to $45000 driveaway last June. With $3500 more for some trinkets like the sunroof and dual memory electric seats. The Passat would cream the Outback in a test, if only for the CVT. The new lower end 1.6 Levorg should be up against the Golf Alltrack. This review is apples to oranges and was made to make the Outback the better choice.

I looked at the Alltrack, but it's ground clearance isn't much better than a standard Golf, which means it's really pretty useless off-road - the Mini Crossman has similar ground clearance. The Subaru has ground clearance close or even better than most SUVs - 8.7". The comparison is not even close. That said, the Subaru is almost SUV like in size since the last 2 versions... Really, the only competition to the Outback is the Volvo XC70 or XC90 but at double the price.

+Art Key - The greater reliability of Subaru, its Symmetrical AWD system (the best in the world), its higher ground clearance, also compensated by the lower center of gravity of its boxer engine, and its more roomy and comfortable interior are very strong points in favor of the Outback in front of the Passat Alltrack. In addition, the Outback obtains better scores in terms of safety: according to IIHS, the Outback of 2018 gets the best possible rating in ALL sections, while the Passat obtains a "Marginal" for the passenger in the event of a frontal collision, and a "Poor"!!! in headlights. At the “Front crash prevention” rating, the Subaru Outback gets “Superior”, while the VW Passat Alltrack gets just an inferior “Advanced”. No doubt the Outback has a much higher price/quality ratio, and is a overall better option. It is yours, as the owner of a VW Passat Alltrack, the biased and partial opinion.

Sorry, you couldn't be more wrong. The Subaru isn't even in the same league as the VW in every category. We have owned both, and couldn't be happier with the Alltrack. The Subaru was the most boring car we have ever driven, and didn't do anything great. Everything in the car was cheap, and the fit/finish was a joke. The VW drives better, gets better fuel mileage, and the AWD system is hands down better than the Subaru. Anyone who thinks the Subaru is better, has a screw loose...just like many on the Subaru.

All consumer organizations say so, and Subaru have a longer half-life than VWs. Safety? Subaru. All safety agencies say it (EuroNCAP, IIHS ...), and Subaru places all its models among the best rated. Traction? Subaru. When you said that "the AWD system is hands down better than the Subaru", you simply do not know what you are saying. The Subaru Symmetrical AWD is unique, Subaru was a pioneer in this field years before Audi quattro was born, which is the only AWD traction (maybe with Mitsubishi's, or BMW's xDrive) that comes close to that of Subaru, eons ahead of any version of the VW 4Motion.

Sure for the pricing argument. But on the short term only. Because on the other hand, a car built on a D-segment plateform (Subaru Outback/VW Passat) will be more confortable and will last longer than a C-segment (Levorg/Golf Variant). So if you plan to keep your car the cheapest to run won't be the cheapest to buy.

Well, where I live the ground clearance is crucial even if we don't drive off-road. We feel much more confident that we can get around in heavy snow, on ice and rough dirt roads with potholes and ruts than in a car with lower ground clearance. I'd choose an Outback for camping trips over another wagon design as well. It's not that I don't like other cars. Sedans and regular wagons just don't offer the same ruggedness.

Sorry but they are really not comparable. I had a Golf Wagon which is the forerunner to the Alltrack. I realize it has been raised and increased somewhat in size. I liked the pep and German type handling. However, I now have a 2017 Outback 3.6. I love it because of the efficient and lower gravity boxer engine, superior safety features and the best AWD on the market.

I test drove both last weekend at a dealer that sells new VW's and Subarus. The VW is a MUCH better driver. I'm thinking the Subaru has better AWD traction for the absolute worst conditions most will never encounter? The VW handles better, but rides a tad firmer. The Subaru engine having a slightly lower center of gravity doesn't make it handle better than the VW. Both are nice vehicles. The VW has some pep while the Subaru felt sluggish and the CVT transmission feels weird. I'm sure people can spit out VW's are junk. Well people can spit out Subarus blow head gaskets. Both manufactures are a lot more reliable today than 15 years ago. Buy what you like.

Outbacks/Legacys haven't blown head gaskets since 2010. That problem is in the past now, unless maybe you never change your oil I suppose. VW/Audi still builds junk. My parents leased a brand new A4 last April, and the headlight has already burned out on it! lol. My father also had some other electrical problem with it, I think it was the mirror. The Germans sure are consistent...consistently bad.

MrKossportapro Comparing the handling of these vehicles doesn't make much sense, since the ground clearance of the Subaru is much higher at 8.7 inches. The Subaru isn't designed to be a sporty car. It is more of a crossover SUV and handles offroad driving well. We chose the 2018 Outback because we plan to take the car on rough roads and live in an area with heavy snow. I feel much more comfortable driving the Subaru around than a car with lower ground clearance in our area.

512L VDA versus 605L VDA, as rated by each manufacturer. We do our research - and it’s already been acknowledged that the Outback has the benefit of a full size spare, but it has a smaller boot by volume.
@gavin047
@gavin047 6 жыл бұрын
Chasing Cars manufacturers think of many ways to fake it. Eg the tiguans listed boot volume is listed with seats slid all the way forward and with no spare. In real life it's more like 430l vs stated 610l. I highly doubt that the golf is actually bigger. My old car had a list of 398l but it fit as much stuff as my current 600l boot. Yes you're Vda is correct but may be worth looking with eyes. The alltrack boot is narrowerer, shallower but marginally tall to top of seats. Apologies for shortness.
@21fer20
@21fer20 6 жыл бұрын
really a quick google search says the outback is bigger, other reviews say the outback is bigger, consumer reports measured the cars themselves and found the outback to be bigger, and going to vw they say the alltrack is 30.4 cubic feet and subaru says the outback is 35.5 cubic feet which makes the outback the bigger vehicle. So unless when you convert cubic feet into liters smaller numbers become larger something is wrong here.
@chasingcars
@chasingcars 6 жыл бұрын
I'm fairly sure the answer is that the VDA measurements OEMs utilise in Australia measures usable cargo space below the window-line, which is deeper (I believe) in the Alltrack. Will confirm next time we have the vehicles through again.
@Y10Q
@Y10Q 6 жыл бұрын
chasing cars, both your dimensions are wrong. The outback has 35.5 cubic feet trunk, 1000 liters. With the seats folded flat, 73.3 cubic feet, 2075 liters. I mean think about it. Outback is a foot longer. Wheelbase on the Outback is 5" longer. Outback is 3" wider. It is a fullsize car. Golf is a compact. Numbers don't lie. I will tell you what you did wrong. 19 cubic feet trunk is from a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek, 512 liters. Do your research better buddy.

Hey Gigi, it might pay to open your eyes. The Golf (hatch) isn't a subcompact, for a start, it's a small car. The Golf wagon is a medium-sized wagon, and the Alltrack is based off that. As I said in the intro, the Golf Alltrack is smaller than the Outback, but it is priced the same. the Passat Alltrack is a lot more expensive in the Australian market, hence why this is the comparison that makes sense.
@gigieinaudi24

+Jeronimo Plus - The greater reliability of Subaru, its Symmetrical AWD system (the best in the world), its higher ground clearance, also compensated by the lower center of gravity of its boxer engine, and its more roomy and comfortable interior are very strong points in favor of the Outback in front of the Passat Alltrack. In addition, the Outback obtains better ratings on safety: according to IIHS, the Outback of 2018 gets the best possible rating in ALL sections, while the Passat obtains a "Marginal" for the passenger in the event of a frontal collision, and a "Poor"!!! in headlights. In “Front crash prevention” Outback gets “Superior”, while VW Passat Alltrack gets just an inferior rating: “Advanced”. Everything is better at the Outback. No doubt the Outback has a much higher price quality ratio, and is a overall better option.

The subaru handles like crap compared to the VW, we crossed shopped and its a dog. The VW drives more like a Touring/Sports car than a station wagon, its still a MQB platform car it shares certain underpinnings with the R32 and standard golf, there are people trading in their GTI' and GLI's for Alltracks. IS20 Turbo and a tune and the cars are at 300hp without reliablity issues. If you havent driven the car, how can you know its driving dynamic.. The subaru SUCKS to drive. That CVT ruins it combined with an anemic motor.
