A cheap car but an expensive and sophisticated drive system. I bought it for the drive system and the economy. A used 2014 out of the Hertz rental fleet cost me $11,000. I wanted a car that got 50 MPG, and that had a maintenance profile that almost allowed me to "weld the hood shut." This car filled the bill. I'm holding at 50 MPG average over 20,000 miles. No belts, no hydraulic issues, long brake life (regenerative braking) and operating systems that have long maintenance windows. I have never felt I did not have the power to handle normal driving challenges. I drive city and long distance highway and am comfortable with its ride and performance in both arenas. Driving this car for best MPG has made me a better driver and a better person (taking it easy and driving sanely with no frustration, road anger and "get-ahead-itis".) I drove performance and luxury cars for years. I can’t really use the power much without breaking the law and the high level of luxury is of questionable practical value to me. Maybe at 70 I just don’t care about that stuff anymore, but I do care to say that this is the best car I've ever owned.

I couldn't agree more. Everyone who wants to drive 80 mph on a 55 mph freeway can pass me up. I chuckle at people who put out $650 a month on car payments for an SUV only to drive to work. It's a fun car to drive, especially with the different dash screens. I fill up for $20 -$28 in CA depending on price. I am not a small guy and I appreciate that it's way more roomy than it looks. 2014 Prius C 2.
@jeesjees26 жыл бұрын
Some car reviewers really live in a bubble. I traded a 2010 BMW 5-series into a new Toyota Yaris hybrid (same hybrid power plant as a Prius C has) and I haven't noticed any problems in performace or otherwise. Performance numbers are vastly different, but practical performance is not that different. Fuel economy is also great, the Yaris consumes 5 litres of gas per 100 km when BMW required some 7 litres of diesel on the same length. Size difference is irrelevant to me since most of the time I travel alone anyway. This video probably tells more of car reviews in general, rather then the car's usability in question. Eventually people buy what they want, regardless of reviews.
@derrickmedina24496 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but for 85% of the world, that car as "cheap" as you say it is, is barely affordable. Consider at it's price range that you get a hybrid powertrain, all of the airbags, standard safety features that are not yet available in many more expensive cars. You could get something more expensive so that you can work more, vacation less, and spend more time paying for it. Honestly, the only thing that a Bentley caries better is your ego. This car will get more people to the same place Toyota should keep making this thing just the way it is. If they do, they can keep making cars for a longer time. Consider the others that can't make cars anymore. The median price of a car now is closing on $35,000,. That's $700/mo for the next 5 years. The rest of the world has better things to do than to make payments on a car.
@flakeu6 жыл бұрын
Americans love to trash talk cars with less than 100hp because ''they lack power''. In the rest of the world, gas is much much more expensive and this kind of power is more than enough to get from point A to point B in a safe manner. This is very cheap to run, cheap to buy for the hybrid technology you get and is one of the most reliable car on sale according to the consumer report.
@cosmicviewer4776 жыл бұрын
Derrick, that's an excellent point. Even the reviewer, himself, "apologized" for his annoying sense of entitlement when it came to his complaining about speed and power. I own a 2018 Prius C Three just like what is driven in this video except mine is black colored. I do highway driving and city driving and usually get better than 50mpg all the time. You forgot to mention that it only has a 9 gallon gas tank which isn’t even a standard tank. It’s a bladder that expands to help reduce weight. So normally you only put 7 to 8 gallons of gas in it to fill it up and can go 400 miles. It saves you a ton of money at the pump since it will run off 87. Premium gas is not needed. I’ll admit that if you are planning to pass someone you have to plan it but I have never needed to floor it to take off from a stop, merge onto highway, or in standard driving. There is plenty of room in the back hatch for grocery runs without lowering the backseat. It is super reliable as well and I personally think it looks better than the other Prius models since this one looks more like a traditional car. The only thing it needs in my opinion is better speakers for the stereo. Other than that, the Entune radio with GraceNote supports Bluetooth, USB media, CD player, and satellite radio with built-in navigation. It fits my needs perfectly and this is coming from someone who owned a Dodge Challenger before this car. I went from 305 hp to 99 hp and still can deal. Since Toyota is discontinuing this for the hybrid Corolla it makes me want to keep it even more since they aren’t going to make anymore.
@DarkReapersGrim6 жыл бұрын
If this got as much mpg as the regular Prius did, or more, I would've jumped at this. Smaller trunk means nothing to me. If you're going grocery shopping (which I do) and you can't fit all of your groceries in the trunk, simply put them on the seats. If you have people sitting on the seats, have them carry it. This is how non-privileged people get around. My family didn't even have a car growing up. As for the cheap materials, If it makes my car's overall price more affordable, then I don't care. It's not like I'm sleeping on it or having sex with my bare ass rubbing against an abrasive material. If that were the case, then it would matter.
@intravenousradio6 жыл бұрын
all of those are good points. However, $21k is way too much money for a car that gets lower mpg than a regular prius, is smaller, and cheaper materials. It's not a bad car for what it is, but it should be priced closer to the chevy spark, hybrid powertrain notwithstanding,

Small issue with the review - while the steering may feel a tad nervous, I assure you this model of car handles quite well owing to its somewhat stiff suspension and low weight.The handling of this vehicle I think is one of its strongest attributes(the other of course being fuel economy - of which the EPA rating is incorrect. You'll actually get closer to 55 mpg average).
@TheBrimstoneBill6 жыл бұрын
I bought the Prius C 3 new in 2013 when gas was close to $4/gallon and immediately put it to work. I've delivered newspapers with this car almost every single day since. My route is more than 100 miles and has some pretty bad roads. It has gone just about 165k miles and I've only had the spiral cable in the steering wheel go bad. In the warm months, I usually get better than 50mpg. Normal driving between 30 - 45 mph can get more than 60mpg. Yes, you have to drive it patiently and learn to drive on the electric motor as much as possible. And yes, it's terrible on the highway!

This Prius C (called Toyota Aqua in Asia) was incredibly hot back in 2013~15 in its home market in Japan; likely due to its small size, incredible fuel economy & for a hybrid with 97hp surprisingly nimble (~1200kg curb does that for you). That being said once the new Prius Mk IV riding on the TNGA appeared, this feels incredibly outdated. If you live in the city and want a runabout, this is pretty good. In North America where roads are wide, highways are frequent & distances are long, get the regular Prius.

uppity little asian man, never rode with a family of 7 kids with a 250 pound dad in a '60 beetle. that bug was 1000 pounds lighter and prayed for 40HP. my dad drove that for 8 years before getting a ford station wagon, i sat in the scratchy cubby hole over the engine and loved it!

@Tarzan if they made a new 1200cc old bug, yes. my first car was a '65 bug, easy to work on, but a rust bucket. my speed demon days are over. i'd drop $15K for a new '60 bug over anything on the road today, though i'd like an electric washer pump, old bugs drained the spare tire to spray the windshield.

I got an used 2015 grey one. Probably wouldn't buy new because i always buy used anyways. Its very nimble. You cant go by this guy. Hybrid is the way to go. The prius c looks small but once you get in it feels bigger. Not the best trunk space though.

Once and only once did I show an aggressive driver who was boss. My Prius C and I did just fine, in fact I handed her a$$ to her. When she finally caught up to me at the red light she had a few hand gestures for me. When the light turned green and I noticed she had a flat tire, I had only one hand gesture for her.

I have the black 2018 Prius C one. My only complaint is when the low fuel light comes on. I get an avg 52 mpg which means a 9.5 gallon tank will carry me 494 miles. The low fuel comes on around 375, I’d like to see it in the 425-440 range. I wait until 450 miles before stopping. When I called and questioned Toyota, they said too many people were trying to make it longer and ended up running out of fuel. Now as a result, people are just counting miles which defeats the purpose of a low light anyway.

I drive one of these C's from 2013 and I have to say the most important part about this car's actual driving performance is the electric-cvt, which is a single pair of electric motors and a conventional gear set, no belt, there's no power because that's efficiency's requirement. Unless this thing gives me a transaxle problem down the road, when it gets rough i plan to attempt a few things among building it to gravel/dirt spec, hybrid rav4 rear end suspension, and swapping/upgrading to the conventional 1nz-fe engine in sacrifice of that efficiency for power and fun, with which that belt-less cvt might see speeds it has never seen before.
@Benjamin-sn5cw6 жыл бұрын
I used to have to drive one of these every day when I lived in Vancouver as they have an excellent car share scheme that works well for that city. But yeah. I'm glad my time in these things was kept to a maximum of 10mins for short city trips or hops to work. It supplemented public transport perfectly but as a main proper car? absolutely not.

Driving the Hybrids works best by getting to your speed & putting on the Cruise Control. The Cruise Control computer accurately adjusts the fuel much better than a heavy human foot, keeping you going at your set speed. Toyota can take a look at other cars, but just focus on quiet comfort & money saving, & it's a winner. Plusher, softer, heated front seats seem to be much more popular now.
@ELPJM096 жыл бұрын
The Prius C is also sold in Japan 🇯🇵. The only difference is the left hand drive. Japanese are not as picky as Americans. They are simple people who don’t need as much space as us. The only Hybrid to trust is a Toyota.
@fundiver1986 жыл бұрын
The vast majority of global sales are in Japan, so its fair to say, this is mainly a car for Toyotas domestic market.

'sounds tinny' ?? It's the lightest weight Prius ! Basically everything they could possibly make thinner and lighter, they did. It's literally designed to keep your money in your wallet not in the fuel tank or dealer's pocket. So yes, it's not a Audi or BMW, but anyone willing to go test drive it knows that. Good mom & kids car, grocery car, back & forth to and from work car. So covering 70% of your driving around town and city. If they did want to add on a few kilograms with improved sound muffling, that would be nice for highway driving. If you would rather buy a Ford Mustang GT, don't go shopping for a Prius C ! :-)

The "C" stand for "It's a Toyota Aqua but the muuricans would get confused if we gave them too many names, so we called it a "Prius, eh, fuck it, "City" instead" Hell, they don't even sell them in Europe because everyone's too hung-over from top gear, so they just dropped the drivetrain in a literal Yaris and sold it as the "Yaris hybrid" It's no surprise that it doesn't look anything like a Prius, it was designed as a totally unique car. New body, new drivetrain, new interior (obviously), and they're bloody gorgeous (Well, the 2015-17 models at least.)

My 1983 Mercedes 240 Diesel goes from 0 to 60 in 25 seconds, so don't complain that the Prius is slow. Zero to 60 in 12 seconds is not that slow. On the other hand, my Mercedes S550 with 450 hp goes 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds, but who's is such a rush to go that fast? Besides, why waste gas when it's approaching $5.00 a gallon in California?
