One thing not mentioned is the o ring in the oil gallery from the oil filter. Make sure that didn’t fall out. I bought a new water pump o ring as well. Mine was a bit hardened

my 2018 wr450 has started weping from that hole my bike only has 63 miles on it ive only had it out twice i take it must be the seal gone

More than likely. Mine had around 35 hours when I bought it. Ended up replacing the impeller too while I was in there.

How would you know if it needed a water pump rebuild vs a bad cylinder gasket? I’ve got milky oil and coolant weeping

I’d start with a compression/leak down test. Could be pressurizing the coolant system with exhaust gases.

If coolant leaking from weep hole prob the water pump seal and the inner seal. Easy enough to change the water pump seals and ride it and see if still getting milky oil

Why would the water pump typically give out? Would it be improper maintenance that does that or just a lot of hours on the motor ?

It could be a few things. This bike only had 32 hours on it, which is unusual for it to be leaking so soon. The bearing had some notchiness to it and the impeller shaft had some wear on it. Typically it’s the bearing that goes bad and then the seals.

Oddly enough not being ridden is a major factor to the seals starting to leak. I just bought a 2016 yz450fx and mine is leaking out the weep hole. It has 109 hours. So 15 a year… from everything I’ve read it’s people who’s bikes sit that seem to need it most. (There’s other reasons but it’s a factor to consider.

I hit a log and ripped my radiator hoses and it ran for a few seconds without coolant and that was long enough for the seal to go bad
