Great that you’re open to this technology! This is the future! The torque of an electric motor is more or less constant and an electric drive is way more efficient than an internal combustion engine. And you’re absolute spot-on regarding the noise! No need for loud exhausts when trail riding. It would be a lot easier for everyone. And the main thing is, this is early days for this technology, don’t anyone knock it! Everyone will need electric drives when the oil finally gets too expensive to pump out of the ground.

Yes there's no doubt this is the way it's going - a little more work to do but these bikes aren't far off now....I love 'em!

TheMissendenFlyer I would imagine it’s scaring the cr@p out of the traditional manufacturers. You don’t need a Triumph Triple motor or a Ducati V-twin. You just need a frame, a drive unit and the normal 3rd party components. Anyone can do it. An off-road ‘TMF’ anyone?

Hope you enjoy the bike. I'm the nutter who did the first Land's End to John o'Groats electric motorbike trip in August last year… and then rode on to Skaw at the top of Shetland on my 2016 Zero DSR. I love it too. Just needs proper DC rapid charging as a standard manufacturer option to make me give up my trusty Honda CBF 1000.

Nice one John - and thanks for popping by! Out of interest how did you manage that Lands End to John O Groats run? Careful planning??
@jtchivers7 жыл бұрын
I borrowed a couple of the external Quiq chargers, courtesy of Zero in the Netherlands, via Streetbike in Halesowen, as I don't have the Charge Tank on mine (can't really justify the extra cost as standard). I swapped the top boxes on my bikes, so I had the GIVI 52 litre on the DSR and filled it with charging stuff! :-D Plenty of footage on my channel, if you're interested. Highlights videos probably easiest to consume! I've also documented it pretty extensively on www.johnchivers.com/lejogskaw.

This was how I charged during the daytime stops. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pojLlGZ8isd1ZtU. Took it down to three hours(ish) charging time by adding an extra 2kW, so a total of 3.3kW. Yes, the new Charge tank for the 2018 takes it up to 6.6kW, which, as you say, makes it more interesting, but I still reckon we need proper DC, electric car charging-type option, bringing it down to minutes. It's a bit frustrating that my car (a 24 kWh LEAF) will charge in around 30 mins up to 80% from empty when they bike at half the capacity can't get close. Looking forward to your thoughts on it, but glad you like it so far!

Really going to enjoy watching and learning - it's not always just 'better or worse' but just 'different' and in all aspects, a new way to enjoy something we all love can't be bad. Just because you have/want/use an electric bike doesn't mean it's an 'either/or' situation as so many tend to view these things. Don't worry about the pace of development in these vehicles' battery technology and charging rates. For example, only this week ( first wk of Feb ) the biggest mass market car maker in the world, Hyundai ( 10 thousand vehicles of all specs PER DAY - they smelt their own sheet metal and fabricate their own rubber and poly products on-site ) has released a car with a three-hundred mile range - the Kona electric; see the reviews.

Hi, TMF- thx for a nice vid of this bike. I’m certain we’ll see more of these in the near future. I see that even Harley Davidson is working on one and that’s some serious deviation from their norm. I ride a pretty quiet Ducati and a moderately noisy Fatboy, and I must tell you I assume that no one hears me on the Ducati and that most hear me on the Harley. If I were on an electric bike, I’m probably in for a whole other mindset. Enjoy the test rides and be safe. Cheers.

@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Yes lot's of plus points you don't necessarily think of when you consider these machines...
@bobz17367 жыл бұрын
But how long does the battery pack last and how much is a new one. Also the electric motor will need some maintenance at some time. .. surely. Plus the regular brakes bearings belt checks etc. ..
@spiritusinfinitus7 жыл бұрын
Depends on how good the battery management is on this. Using Tesla cars as a benchmark, for example, the Lithium Ion battery degradation is turning out to be a lot slower than people initially expected it to be. After 90,000 miles most owners are still seeing 90-95% of original capacity and as the tech improves that will continue to get better. On the Teslas, the larger capacity batteries have unlimited mileage warranties for up to 8 years, and I'm pretty sure this bike is more or less using the same kind of cells, just less of 'em. (Just found something on Zero's site that says their warranty is 5 years and covers covers parts, including the motor, motor controller, frame, swing arm, fork, rear shock, brake assemblies, wheels and electrical sub-assemblies, and approved Zero accessories) I think it's likely that it'll probably be more likely to change the battery because you want a performance/range upgrade with newer technology in a few years rather than the battery itself losing any noticeably significant capacity. (This probably goes out of the window in very cold or very hot conditions though unless they have adequate management of that too). The battery will probably be the most expensive part of these vehicles to replace (at the moment anyway). In 2012, around about the time when Zero first made bikes that'd do 100 mile ranges, battery costs were around $600 per KW/h and back then it was estimated that this would fall to $160 per KW/h by 2025. Turns out we've already hit that target and it actually looks more likely that we'll get to $100 per KW/h by 2020! So, presumably that means that replacement packs will either get cheaper, or the range will increase for the same price. Zero say "the compact brushless motor requires no liquid or forced-air cooling and requires no routine maintenance." Because of the regenerative braking on these things there'll be less brake wear, but they will of course still require maintenance. I wonder if this puts extra stresses on the belt though, or maybe that's just extra heavy duty? I imagine bearings, shocks, tyres, light bulbs etc. will all be exactly the same as any other bike.

Considering the performance and high cost, along with the fact they're a bit of an unknown quantity, how does it look insurance-wise?

I just tried a 2018 Zero DS ZF14.4. Seems all good. Really shifts well in Sport mode. Other than that it handles well like a fast 650. They want £12.5k for the ex demo which they say includes the UK incentive. Seems a lot to me as you can get a new one £13.490 including Govt Incentive. I’m not sure I trust the dealerships, including BMW, with the incentives. Do they hike the price I wonder? Good bike though. Twice the price of a good 650cc petrol engine.

I love the concept and could easily live with one for commuting but the pricing is prohibitive when compared with other bikes that you could buy for the same money.Thks for the experience.
@rickp99467 жыл бұрын
I was seriously thinking about one of these but I've sort of ruled it out for now. For the more powerful of the DSR models plus the extra range additions you're looking at BMW GS levels of outlay - i.e. around £18K or more - and as it's a continually developing technology there is the worry that it will quickly lose value as the technology moves on. Compounding that is the sheer cost of the batteries and whether future buyers will want that risk beyond the warranty. Hasn't hurt secondhand cars such as the Leaf and Zoe though so I may be wrong there. However, it's definitely the way to go - for me I'll just wait a little while I think. I think a nice Street Triple will fit the bill in the meantime!
@specialcircs7 жыл бұрын
Rick P I'm in the same position and strongly agree with the points you made. The biggest issue is technology - as you say it advances so quickly the older models are essentially worthless.
@HollowPoint647 жыл бұрын
The problem is, if no one buys these earlier models, the companies go bust and never produce the later models. If no one had bought the first injection cars for example, with all that new tech that was unreliable and expensive and became outdated quite quickly, we'd probably all still be using vehicles with Carbs.

Lovely bike, love the chilled out cruising concept and you can get a wiggle on if you want to - easily. To be honest how many bikers ride more than 100 miles per ride-out? You could have one of these for local stuff and a conventional one for long-distance stuff, bliss if you can afford it. Often ride past horses in our neck of the woods (did on Sunday through Axmansford) and that would improve biker-public relations. Interested in how much per mile it is to run.
@thorstambaugh15205 жыл бұрын
Between 1 and 2 cents per mile here in the states. All the bikers when they see one automatically become cruisers that do 1000 miles a day and to the south pole on weekends. Fact is the average Joe does 37 miles a day and 100 on weekends. Keep an old locomotive for the long hauls.

@spiritusinfinitus7 жыл бұрын
You're still paying for the development costs of the new tech/batteries etc.. Once these things scale up to mass market levels and these costs are covered they should potentially end up a lot cheaper than traditional bikes because there are a LOT less precision moving parts in 'em, will take less labour to build. Of course, the manufacturers will keep the costs high for as long as they can!

I look forward to the day they get cheaper. When they are good value for money they will sell well. Speed aside range and cost are terrible

Err, if you mean that low level buzzing, I think it's my mic, it's done that all the time but on conventional bikes you can't hear it due the engine noise!
@PaulSlootman6 жыл бұрын
I heard it, and it's more of high frequency clicking, like you used to get with cheap car radios with a badly decoupled dynamo. Your interference sounded speed dependent, so originating from the bike. Of course the electrical currents involved are rediculous, and those are switched on and off digitally, making it hard to suppress interference. I'd like to hear what an AM radio does when the bike is working :)

I,m a convert and totally agree with you on all points .The big problem is the price ATM so if they really want a big slice of the action they need to sell for 10k max to compete for bike and maxi scooter sales . The quick charge is also going to be the key to promoting sales .Battery tech is moving fast so I don't think it will be long before we see 200 mile range with reduced weight and 1 hr 90% charge .Look forward to the rest of your review . Of course you might not always be looking for that on a bike ride. However it might make a great second bike or commuter if one has the means. I had also test rode the Harley LiveWire, and unfortunately the group leader/follower were both on gas Harleys that were so loud you totally missed the 'Magic Carpet Ride' effect. Can't wait to own my own electric one day, but I prefer the Energica. Great video, I'm really interested in how these bikes are developing. Looking forward to seeing what the real world usable range is.

Looks a nice bit of kit. Do you think you'll get a chance to take it on any fire roads or green lanes? I really like the idea of e bikes for green laning, nice and quiet to keep the countryside peaceful.

These are too heavy for off roading in my opinion....

I do love the concept of electric bikes, I wonder how they will develop in the future? :-)

Hopefully a longer range, a shorter charging time and the price come way down. They are getting there, though!

I will definitely go that way should the bikes be improved further, batteries etc. But it needs to happen sooner rather than later, old fart me...

Looks great fun mate, I guess if you are just commuting short distances and popping to the pub it would be superb fun, as you said. Long distances are a no go 😜
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Agreed - although once the charging is down too sub one hour (new gadget out next month to allow this apparently) the whole proposition gets a whole lot more practical...

Looks fun, I’d like a go but doubt it’s something I’d ever buy. Is that buzzing noise when you slow down the bike or some sort interference between bike and camera?

The sound reminds me of those old milk floats, all that's missing is the rattling bottles :)

Sounds like it’s turbine smooth! With the fast charging, could this potentially use the charging points at motorway services? I’d be interested in what the lighting is like, drl’s during the day and brighter at night? Any impact on range if night time riding uses a different light mode? I guess anything that draws appreciable current....so heated anything...could effect this....be interested what zero think to this. I guess the biggest issue is initial cost.....but for buzzing around town and relatively short trips, it’s ideal and looks fun to boot! Couple of other questions, warranty on the bike, especially the battery, expected life and should it need it, the cost of a new battery. I have the older NXR design, the Valkyrie, similar colour combination. Great lid and the photochromatic transitions visor is a great addition! Nice update TMF.....lucky bugger! Enjoy!

Id love to try one out, my thoughts as I am a rider who rides a gl1800 currently, first of all, its quiet, quick, clean, low maintenance. that is a win. any way you look. unlike some bikes trying to sell a way of life, this looks to me to be very eco-transportation. i simply love the idea. just waiting on batterie tech to catch up. even magnet tech.

Looking forward to your impartial review on this bike MF, there's no denying this is the future of motorcycling.
@Addy29plus57 жыл бұрын
Ummm yes I can and will Deny this is not the future. You think sales are down on bikes now wait until a few ppl die because they can’t be heard by other road users and the classic “I didn’t see you mate” turns into I didn’t see or hear you mate”

Get it really filthy and see how easy it is to clean. Is there anything noticeably different / ie, does loads of crud around the motor cooling fins make any difference, can you jet wash those bits? Also, will the charging wotsit you mentioned allow charging out and about on one of the charging points at motorway service stations etc.? I'm presuming to use this at home you need something special wired into the garage. I'm guessing the existing slow charger is just using an ordinary 13amp plug in your garage and nothing special?

with speakers for an exhaust you could make it soumd like any combustion engine configuration.. and maybe an algorithym to mimic engine feel? Singles through twins to inline fours? That would be the future .

David O'Hare Great helmet as well ! Happen to own one of these albeit in a different paint scheme, called "Valkyrie", it is lovely. Pretty shape this lid, looks very much to have been shaped in the wind tunnel.

Would like to see a review that puts it in custom w/full throttle and high regen brake settings... both to see how it effects range and how well it mimics engine braking. I do this some on my hybrid and it works quite well - never use pedal brakes over 20mph (or I got cut off) but curious how it's set up for these... and every review just uses Sport. Zero's info online says Sport mode has almost no regen braking.

As a London Taxi driver,and a bike fanatic,we now have electric powered vehicles.I like the idea of both,but although we can discuss the mileage range,I would be interested as to the cost of battery replacement ,once depleted.Thanks for your great channel,Regards.

Cheers Geoff - I believe the battery has a 5 year guarantee - but I don't know the answer to your question, I guess this is a fear a lot of potential owners would have....

Hey TMF - great news on the long term review ..Would be interesting to see the interface on the iPhone in full along with the charger, how you hook it up etc Does it do 80% charge in half the time like most devises these days or is the 9 hour charge linear ie if you wack it on for an hour how much charge do you have ? Cheers

Yep - will endeavour to cover that in the long term review in due course...cheers - TMF
