Agreed with everything but they didn’t put their free hand down during any of their tosses. I didn’t see a single person put their free hand down. Maybe that isn’t a thing everywhere but in college it is, and at my high school and every competition we were in it was very serious. They would take points off anytime someone had their left hand up during a toss rather than flat by their side touching their leg, until the flag came down.

Since you’re experienced can I ask you a question? Do y’all pay attention to your “free hand” as in your left hand, the one you’re not tossing with? I l led this performance but I noticed every single person had both hands in the air during tosses . My coach would always yell “free hand” if we continued to do it we had to run laps. Because at competitions they take off points every time someone doesn’t mind their free hand. If you watch any good collegiate teams they all do it. But the more videos I watch the more I’m like “is that a Louisiana thing? An LSU thing? Why is absolutely no one watching their free hand?!?!”

I love how excited their classmates were I don’t remember my school ever acting like that when it was just us colorguard performing lol. They were awesome. Their tosses were great except one thing… not a single person paid attention to their free hand. I’m starting to wonder if that’s not taught at all schools. My coach was an LSU colorguard alumni so she taught us stuff they did in collegiate color guard and one of her biggest issues was when we would toss your tossing hand would go straight in the air and your free hand immediately went down to your side touching your leg. When the flag came down you would pick that hand back up and grab the pole with your left hand and the flag part with your right hand or tossing hand. She was constantly yelling “free hand!” It was drilled in our heads. But it helped us win plenty of competitions, and after watching other people not do it, it looks sloppy. My coach used to say “you look like. A T. rex with your free hand like that! Fix it!” And every video I watch of people not doing it makes me cringe but when I see color guards actually doing it I’m like yassssssss watch that free hand baby!!! 😂😂😂

I went to a Baptist school. They started a middle school team when I started 7th grade. 8th grade I was co captain with my best friend but the high school team only had 3 people on it so they pulled the two of us and our other 8th grade friend to be on the high school team. So our team was only 6 people lol. We had 3 8th graders, a 9th grader, 10th grader and a senior, but the 10th grader was the captain cuz the senior was horrible 😂 that’s terrible to say but lord she was. I switched to public school in 9th grade and was going to try out for the team and they basically just had me show them a. Few things since my Baptist school had one of the best teams and they were like “oh yeah you don’t even have to come to try outs. You can just come help us with try outs!” And I planned on it but their team was horrible and everyone made fun of them. And my old school played them so I let my pride get in the way and didn’t want my old team to see me on such a horrrible team. I regret it now cuz I wish I had stayed in guard!

dude im in my first year of color guard and yall looked amazing
@Lacideshae7 ай бұрын
They really did but if you take one thing from them (and idk if your coach even teaches yall this) but watch your “free hand” notice when they toss both of their hands are up waiting for the flag, all of them did it. My coach was very strict about how we would toss with our right hand, it stayed straight up in the air and the left hand or free hand immediately goes down by your side touching your leg, as soon as the flag comes down then you can move your hands accordingly to grab the flag usually the free hand would be grabbing the pole end and the toss and would be grabbing the flag end. My coach was a former lsu colorguard alumni so she taught us the collegiate stuff. Go watch some videos of collegiate flag teams and notice any of the good ones are going to have their free hand by their side not up in the air. It looks sloppy if you don’t put the free hand down, my coach used to say we looked like a T. rex with our left arm bent up like that. It truly does make the performance look so much cleaner and more professional, and that’s how they’re gonna do it in college. So if your coach isn’t teaching it already maybe bring it up to her (watch a few videos to see what I’m talking about you will notice a huge difference) and it will help y’all so much if y’all are in any competitions. Good luck! I hope you enjoy color guard as much as I did! Don’t blink it goes by so fast!

@Lacideshae7 ай бұрын
Ok but as an instructor and judge it didn’t bother you that not a single one had their free hand down during tosses? Or is that a regional thing? I’m from Louisiana my coach was an LSU guard alumni and she was always on us about our free hand being down by our side during a toss until it was time to catch the flag. They would take off points at competitions anytime someone forgot. Not to mention it looks so much cleaner and less sloppy. But the more videos I watch the more I’m realizing I only see it in the professional college teams like the good ones.
@auburnkim19897 ай бұрын
@@Lacideshae That was a great observation! Back in the day, free hand was a HUGE deal. I marched Auburn in the 80s and we were straight military style back then with ridiculous uniforms (we were so jealous of the flag line uniforms of LSU and UGA), lol. However, with the difficulty of tosses these days, they often have what I would call 'loose' free hands that stay lifted in some way. And yes, I could have found little problems (I immediately noticed inconsistent foot positions, as well) to criticize but nobody's actual flag work is this clean anymore. Never. I am convinced that this is why WGI shows almost never have the full group spinning together. This level of clean spinning is very very difficult to achieve with more than ten people. Even counting off for feet and hands, this group would get a very high score. I think the major NCAA flag lines manage to be as clean as they are by keeping the work easier for many games. Some of them require one turns, split leaps, etc. for auditions but they almost never put them in a show. TBH, although I love the way color guard has improved and I still follow DCI and WGI; I prefer the simpler, crowd appealing, GameDay style of the college level color guard/band. What I call a Football Band. This is just my personal preference. Take care!!!!!

@@auburnkim1989 I looked up my old high school and found videos of them at some band competitions from 2016, 2017 and 2022 and omg I’m so sad when I was in it, my brother was in band , and we had the dancers too and it took us 3 buses to fit the band guard and dancers. Now their entire 3 part group is so tiny they wouldn’t even fill 1 bus! The 2022 video I said had TWO flag girls!!!! And I thought my team of 6 was small! And they definitely don’t have the same coach anymore because on just a normal toss none of them watched their free hand. But I guess they don’t take off for that anymore (and I did see a lot in this video where their hands looked like they were supposed to be up as opposed to just the regular toss and free hand in talking about) but my old school won the marching band competition this year and last year. Even with a super tiny team! And it’s not even a small school. It’s k-12 but each grade has around 120ish students so that’s 480 in high school and theres less than 30 people between the band, color guard and dance team. That makes me so sad cuz that school band and color guard were like a second family to us!
@auburnkim19897 ай бұрын
@@Lacideshae That is so sad. Very similar to my old home town. The kids miss out on soooo much without band. I guess we were just blessed. Do it! It’s so much fun. I would give anything to go back to high school and do color guard again! My brother was in the marching band so we were out there every day for practice and every Friday night for games together, but really the whole band and color guard were like a big family! It will be difficult at first because you have to learn the routine to the music, then you go on the field and learn your spots with counts, but without your flag and band won’t have their instruments, then once y’all learn that well enough they add in the instruments and the flags, then you practice slowly part by part of actually having them play the music and y’all doing your routine while also moving all over the field. That’s the hard part is everyone moving around and each other sometimes you’re walking backwards while twirling a flag or they’re walking backwards playing instruments, but by the time football season starts you will know that halftime show like the back of your hand. You will be able to do it with your eyes closed! And the adrenaline of getting out there on the field right before it starts omg… your heart is gonna be racing but when it’s over you’re gonna be so happy cuz you’re gonna have a blast. my middle school doesnt have a color guard team but i wanna try out when i go to high school next year it looks fun, it doesnt look very easy tbh idk why so many people think that
@Lacideshae7 ай бұрын
It’s not easy, but it’s worth it! My school started a team when I was going into 7th grade, so there was no halftime show. Then in 8th grade I was cocaptain with another 8th grader and the high school team didn’t have enough people so they pulled the two of us and one other 8th grader to be on the high school team so that meant we suddenly had to learn marching band stuff, that’s where it’s hard. But they take it slow with you. You will have flag practice where you learn the routines to the music, then you will start having practice with the band (and dancers if y’all have those) and yall will be on the field just marking spots, no music, no flag work, just learning where to stand, where to walk, where to go with counts. Then after a while of that practice will start involving the band actually playing and you actually doing the flag work. The hardest part is just the fact that everyone is moving around all over the place, sometimes walking backwards while either twirling a flag or playing an instrument. But I promise it becomes second nature to you. After a few practices you can do it in your sleep! My suggestion is bring your flag home every day and practice. If you can get a copy of the music practice with that. Also your coach may not talk about this (because none of the people in this video did this, not a single one!) but when you toss with your right hand it should go straight up in the air when you let go of the flag but your left hand or “free hand” should immediately go down by your side touching your leg. As soon as the flag starts to come down then you move your free hand to catch the pole part and your toss hand catches the flag part. My coach was an LSU color guard alumni so she taught us all the collegiate stuff and LSU and a lot of colleges are very strict about free hand, and they will be at competitions, they take points off every time a flag girl/person doesn’t have their free hand down by their side…. Unless it’s a specific type of toss like we did one where we stuck our left arm straight out and tossed the flag around our left arm. That was one exception I can think of. But for just normal regular right hand tosses always watch your free hand otherwise it looks sloppy and you look like a T. rex 😂😂😂 good luck at try outs. When you go to try outs and they teach you the routine go home and practice practice practice! I promise you will love it. Friday nights out on that field were my favorite. The adrenaline was always pumping. We used to get Ina. Circle cross arms and hold our flags and drop them all at once (after we prayed) so that would be “the only drop of the night” and I’m telling you when that last note plays and the halftime show is over you’re filled with so much dopamine, like you will seriously have the time of your life. Plus the colorguard and band will literally become your second family!

Nice to see so many people supporting guard and cheering like that! At my school people don’t realize how hard it is and call us wannabe cheerleaders. We don’t even get a practice space.

Girl same!!!! Now at halftimes shows our school definitely cheered but if it was just us like in this video we got some claps but nothing like this! We were definitely considered nerdy. We used to have to practice in the hallway to the gym or if the weather was nice we practiced in the courtyard. But we didn’t have any actual normal practice space except for when we had field practice with the band, we had a practice field we all used. But that was only when the whole band/ color guard/ dancers were practicing together

I never understood how majority of the flags don’t get tangled. I did a color guard dance at a dance camp one time and it was fun and I did good but it was frustrating to learn at first bc my flag kept getting tangled!
@Lacideshae7 ай бұрын
They definitely do sometimes but normally because you’re constantly twirling them they don’t. If you’re walking with them while not twirling or tossing you usually have the flag held down with your left hand.

We were only ever asked to perform at one pep rally, and we really wanted to preform our WG show but the floor was too big so we came up with some stupid performance that we only had a week or two to prepare for- this is on top of being in the middle of our season. Needless to say it didn't go very well and our school thinks we're a joke 😬

This is really good but I came to watch this from people in tiktok saying color guard is basically cheer and I see no resemblance. They are nothing alike. Not hate to this at all cus it looks difficult but cheer is different
@BriannaMoore.4 жыл бұрын
Yeah no color guard is definitely nothing like cheer. And color guard is so difficult....most people don’t know that until they try it for themselves. But cheer is somewhat difficult too but not in the same way
