Didn't even know this sport existed until yesterday. Love it! Am I right in thinking the different disc's act in different ways? Like banking left or right etc?

Yes. There is a lot about discs to learn! Wait til you play it! It's an awesome sport with an amazing community

@@morgandanielmalone I am sure my upstairs neighbour plays this. For the last few months I have regularly been taking in packages for him, which I thought were just small frisbees. But after seeing this sport yesterday, I am sure he plays and is building up his collection. What a strange coincidence that he may well be playing a sport I have only just discovered!

It's a combination of the type of disc and the way you throw it. If you notice, sometimes the guys will throw standing left foot back, right foot forward, reaching back with the right hand and pulling through. That's a back-hand throw, and discs will tend to fly straight for a ways and then fade off to the left. The other throw they will do is a side-arm throw. For this you stand the opposite way you do for a back-hand - left foot forward right foot back. The reach back is shorter and the arm makes an L shape at the elbow as you swing through. It's a lot like how you'd throw if you were skipping rocks. The side-arm flies straight for a ways and then fades off to the right. While every disc will follow these two basic flight patterns, the shape of the disc can tweak exactly how it behaves in flight. For example, a disc that is what we call under-stable will tend to drift right at the start if thrown backhand rather than just flying straight, before fading to the left. Generally the fade will be less pronounced than a neutrally stable disc. The disc will do the exact inverse if thrown sidearm - it will drift left for a bit before finishing right. Conversely, a disk that is over-stable will be less likely to go flat. When thrown backhand it will drift left right at the beginning of the throw, and continue on to finish very sharply left. Same but opposite for sidearm, starting right and finishing hard right. Lastly, the horizontal angle the disc is released at also changes the way it flies through the air. We call this hyzer and anhyzer. Hyzer is when you angle the edge of the disc furthest from your hand toward the ground. This accentuates the disc's natural tendency to move left or right, depending on whether you threw backhand or sidearm, resulting in an extreme turn in flight. An anhyzer is just the opposite - the disc is thrown with the edge furthest from your hand pointing away from the ground. This reduces the disc's natural tendency to move left or right, to the point where a disc will fly away from its natural finish direction for a period of time before. When you combine throw type (sidearm or backhand), disc shape (overstable, stable, and understable), and throw angle (hyzer, flat, or anhyzer) you end up with an incredible combination of potential flight patterns to get through the obstacles on the course. For example, a sidearm throw (finish right) with an overstable disc (starts right) thrown with anhyzer angle (forced left) makes a big S shape in the air. A backhand throw (finish left) with an understable disc (flips right) thrown anhyzer (forced right) will turn into the big rollers the pros were throwing. There are hundreds of flight patterns available, and there are degrees between all of them depending on the disc and exactly how you throw them. It's a lot of fun learning them all and figuring out how to make the disc do what you want it to do on the course.

@@jeffwells641 Oh man. Thanks so much for that detailed reply :) I wasn't sure listening to the commentators, if Hyzer was a style of throw, or name of the disc :) I can't believe some of the throws they need to make through thick forests of trees....it's amazing. And I'll admit my rookie mistake...when I watched my first video yesterday (awesome when KZbin throws a totally random recommendation at you) I saw that first basket, and thought "getting a disc into the top of that (like a basket ball basket)" must be nearly impossible....oops! :D
