I have four bikes, a 2009 BMW RT that I recently acquired with 13,000 miles, 94 BMW R1100RS, ‘97 Honda Valkyrie with 102,000 miles and Triumph Bonneville T100. I am mulling over selling all but the Triumph and getting a new Gold Wing or BMW. The RT has already cost me $1,300 in routine maintenance, plus has a fuel gauge (fuel strip) problem that cost me $400 and is on the fourth strip. The dealership no longer works on bikes over 10 years old and the service manager said they have numerous new BMWs that can’t be sold due to leaking brake calipers.

I test rode the new Goldwing Tour 6 speed, planning on buying it because of my long history on Honda bikes, but took a test ride on the GTL on a whim after putting a deposit on a GW. Once I experienced the difference in power and handling, ripping off clutch-less upshifts under full power, it was all over. Great review gentlemen, very fair and complimentary to both fantastic bikes. I ride a 1500 Valkyrie which shares some of the characteristics of the Gold Wing without accoutrements of comfort. I've test ridden the BMW 1600 and other models, and the BMW indeed has strengths for agility, but for cruising, the chassis of the Gold Wing cannot be beat. I wished you had addressed mountain ascents and descents, as this is where the Gold Wing suffers, like the Valkyrie. I've ridden all the European Alps and find the weight of the Wing, and the need to remain in 2nd and 3rd on ascents while using the same on descents, requires extreme diligence on the part of the rider. Doing it two-up is nearly crazy, as weight, inertia of mass on descents in hairpins makes this a challenge. I'm sure the BMW does this better. The comment about road surface is spot on; roads in Europe transition from cobblestone, to flat stone surfaces, to asphalt, and the heavy Wing must be extremely careful. Great review!

@@hereb4theend hi buddy. The biggest reason for me was the DCT box. The bike just felt like a huge scooter. I guess I am not ready for a gearbox to think for me on a bike yet, let alone change five gears in a matter of 100mts. I know you can put it in sport mode, etc, but it was still a schlep for me. Also, I live in south Africa, and here we do not get the nav on the goldwing, and it is totally senseless to have such a huge screen to only display radio stations. Unlike other parts of the world, for every 1 honda dealership, we have 50 bmw dealerships. The bike also is speed limited to 200kph. The k1600 GTL is about R100k less than the Honda, but it certainly does not have more than R100k worth of extras to justify. Just a few of my reasons.

Thank you for the very nice reportage. In my opinion, there shouldn't be a winner. Those two big tourers with a different proposal. More comfortable driving position for the Goldwing and more sporty for the BMW K1600 GT. The GTL is more similar to the Goldwing. Why didn't you picked that up to compare? The BMW is outdated and I agree that a new make-up would more than welcome from BMW estimators. I am the lucky owner of a K1600 GTL and I use it every day in a big crowded city like São Paulo. I have not so much problems driving between the lines of the cars. The only BIG problem of the GTL is the heat that comes from the engine, in the city traffic, that makes you regret the buy when you drive it in summertime in a tropical country. The rest is pure fun! So, every one should buy the motorcycle that best fits his needs. The most important thing is that there is somebody that test them for us honestly pointing out pros and cons.

These bikes are so good, I'll take one of each. That said, I'd probably be on the BMW more often.

Great review, gentlemen! Quality camera work and amazing scenery as well. I have to admit that I was a bit surprised by the outcome. I thought for sure the BMW would be declared the winner. The Honda must have really impressed! If my Vision ever quits I would certainly consider both of these bikes as it's possible replacement.

One is comparing two different bikes, Luxury Goldwing with the less luxury BMW. One should compare the goldwing with the BMW 1600 GLT

Just found this review and really enjoyed it guys, thank you. I am picking up my 22 Goldwing Tour DCT in a couple of weeks. I know this review is a few years old and I think Honda have now improved slow speed throttle response (DCT) with better calibration. Thanks again for a great review. 😊👍

Good job guys, you both have strong accents but I hung in there because you both talk very knowledgeable about these two bikes and hit on so many important things that a buyer needs to know. I may end up with one of these some day soon and you two helped me a lot. I am leaning to the Gold Wing mainly because of reliability over the BMW. I hear way too many bad stories about BMW breaking down, I don't care if it's under warrantee when I'm 300 miles from the nearest town and 600 from the nearest BMW dealer. Break downs are a deal breaker for me. I know my Honda's and Yamaha's just don't break down, bullet proof reliability is the most important thing for me, over price or style or anything else. I may end up wit either a Gold Wing to the Yamaha FJR 1300.

Both are really good bikes, you cannot go wrong either ways, it really depends what you want from the bike, the GoldWing has a great clutchless riding experience. I have ridden both bike's & if I had the money i'd buy both

Definitely will choose the Golden Wings. Beautiful shape. Excellency. More streamlined. not emit heat from the engine As BMW. More practical. Spare parts are available and much cheaper than bmw. resales value is retained. But BMW loses a lot. Regular maintenance prices at BMW are very very very high. so the winer is GOLD WINGS

Where did you film this ride? I am on the fence with these two, rented the K1600 for an event don't need that much power am more used to the boxer engine. I bought the 1800 Gold Wing over the BMW when it was first released but would like to try out the new one with DCT. Just got a Vespa 300 GTS for beach rides and I love the "twist and go" smoothness without shifter, very stress-free and relaxing ride. Thx for great review

To compare one should compare the Goldwing with the BMW GLT and not the GT which is less luxury
@Gixxer-11004 жыл бұрын
I think you took the wrong bmw, in this comparison there should be a GTL which is synonymous with comfortable driving, the seats on the GT and GTL are completely different as well as the steering wheel which is in a different position so reminiscent of driving a golden wing, the bmw lacks navigation that would u completed the overall impression of the main board, and let's not forget the BMW has been on the market for 10 years with minor changes, .... both engines are great but the price of the Honda is much higher ....

I recently bought a Goldwing from a co-worker with 103,759 miles on it. He logged in all of miles within 7 years. I been logging in over thousand miles per month with 130,100 miles on it now! I’ll swear to ya...this bike never had a single mechanical issues and runs like a hot butter sliding down on a burnt toast! When not riding it...it purrs like a kitten which you can’t say that about many bikes out there. My next bike will be a DCT GW because my hand is getting painful at times shifting in city streets. Damn arthritis! Anyhow, that’s my two cents of my experience thus far! I love BMW to!

The design of the Honda is not to top. Certainly not by the BMW. Floating lines the give the Honda presence, yet don’t make it look like the elephant it is. Technically, opinions may be split. Both are at the top of their peers.

Doesn't cost play a part in deciding which bike is best? Here in the UK the GW Tour is about £6k or over 25% more expensive than the K. I do like the GW a lot, but I think financial considerations would make me go for the K because that is also a great bike. I don't think the GW is £6k better than the K in terms of performance and equipment.

Honda redesigned the Gold Wing to be closer to the K1600GT in the sense that it has become much sportier. Much different from my 1500 vintage. BMW has a bigger tank, much more storage (this generation of Gold Wing storage is laughable), and that headlight is excellent, very modern but not high tech. Having extensively ridden both, I pick the Gold Wing (mine is outside now). Lower center of gravity helps. The BMW is too tall. Two things that never make it into reviews: the passenger seat on the K1600GT-L is comically tall. The passenger looks like they’re riding Jeepers Creepers-style on the trunk rack. Also, the BMW requires premium fuel. While the tank is bigger, I have found my Gold Wing is 40 MPG+ even in the heavy traffic, and I save by putting in 86 octane or higher. While the premium isn’t necessarily required on every vehicle that suggests it, BMW Motorrad is specific. You also lose your ass on maintenance. And the stupid scroll wheel they brought in the 7 series sedans is moronic. I can tap a button for the heated grips and seat, passenger seat is a dial, on the Wing. The DCT you just learn in time. Once you figure out how to make it work, it is perfectly manageable in traffic, which I think then guys mentioned. I daily mine, and it irritates me when people assume they can’t ride it in the city. I also have a 1988 model, which weighs about 1,000 pounds. This Wing is substantially lighter. Also, I got my first Wing in my twenties. I’m not old my any means (thirties), yet I have one. Some of like sitting on a couch with 120 BHP while young idiots ride 400cc crotch rockets. They’re not even in the same class. Last time someone wanted to race, I said “Okay, let’s go here to San Diego and back.” Kid totally changed his mind. Great video though! I love seeing this part of the world, and the cobblestone street at the end.

About the comment on driving in the city with a DCT. My current bike en previous bike both have DCT and you need to learn how to manage not having a clutch. It's simple if you got a hang of it. Use the rear break more often. If you would have a rearbreak lever where you have a clutchlever it would be perfect.
