I just turned 600 miles on the Monkey and it's time for the first oil change. It's a tedious process but not hard to do - this video is a step-by-step overview of the process.

Thank you. That's the best video I've seen. My 600 miles is just coming up and I'd planned for the dealership to do the oil change. However having watched this, I can't imagine them going to this much trouble. They'll probably just change the filter? I'm having a go myself using this video as my guide.

I can’t help but think that the front mudguard looks like it’s on backwards, as there’s more mudguard in front of the fork legs than behind it. Is it just an optical illusion?

According to the manual on the Honda Monkey, the first oil change is at 600 at 4000 miles is when the filter needs cleaning. Check the manual.

I've since switched to the Kitaco clutch cover which has a regular filter cartridge and makes the job much easier: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fae4Znilbbl_hrc But regardless, with the gunk I found in the catch screen and the sludge in the oil spinner, I would not wait until 4k miles.

@Dragomir Ronilac not sure why me recommending to check the filter screen earlier than the manual based on what I found on my filter screen makes me ignorant, but it's all good man. Thanks for the view!

Very thorough, overly so maybe, but always replace a crankcase gasket. Aren't the three outer holes on the spinner for a peg tool? That would negate the risk of a penny dropping into the innards.
@eastcoastish3 жыл бұрын
They sell a couple of different tools to hold the gear from spinning, but honestly the penny solution works and is easy.

there is a 2nd screw next to the oil drain screw, with a long spring, what is the function of the screw with the spring?
@eastcoastish4 жыл бұрын
That's the cam chain tensioner (it keeps tension on the cam chain); when you take out the cam gear, releasing that bolt makes it easier to take on and off.

After doing this oil change, its hard for me to go into neutral fron 1st, you know what the problem could be???
@eastcoastish3 жыл бұрын
You probably need to adjust your clutch cable. If there's too much play, pulling the clutch lever in won't fully disengage the clutch to let you get into neutral.

If you put it in gear, would you need to jam the cogs with a penny?
@eastcoastish4 жыл бұрын
I assume you need the penny (or something to hold the spinner) regardless if it's in gear, but since I can't test without opening it up, I'm not sure. Anyone else know?

Great point! I typically do, it may have been the way I edited the video (or I may have forgot to do it in this case), but yes, always even the load on the bolts as they're being tighten down.

Why do you and other people use 10W40? The owner’s manual recommends 10W30.
@eastcoastish4 жыл бұрын
Living in Florida which is hot more often than not, the slightly higher viscosity provides better protection for the engine.

Yep, factory color. In the US they first came in red an yellow, now red, yellow and blue. I believe in other countries they also offer it in a black color.

How did you remove the clutch cable. When l got the housing off, a loose part fell onto the floor. It took me a while to figure out what it was....l think it was a clutch pressure plate or an actuator....
@eastcoastish3 жыл бұрын
The clutch cable comes off by loosening those two nuts that hold it to the black bracket (that you also remove).

First time doing an oil change on my monkey or any motorcycle, you do this while motorcycle is in neutral?
@eastcoastish4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it matters. I'm sure mine was in neutral since I always switch to neutral before I turn it off.

@eastcoastish4 жыл бұрын
I didn't see any easy way to lose the penny in the engine where it was placed. I guess for reassurance you could drill a hole through the penny and run some fishing line through it just in case.

The only reason I'd recommend a penny over a screwdriver, is the steel of screwdriver could scratch/mar the gear, where as the soft zinc/copper of a penny won't.
