I really like the new fairing. The older ones looked like a freight train nose sticking out being so rounded and ornate. That one looks a lot more like the victory cross country, which I liked a lot.

That is what it was modeled after. The freight trains of the 50s. Its funny you said that.

I agree with you. The "Classic" fairing was inspired by Art Deco locomotives from the late 1930's. The newer fairing design is a muscled up version of the Cross Country. The newer front fender and wheel designs also are reminiscent of Victory Cross Country's.

I bought a 2017 Indian Heritage Classic last Halloween. It was one of those they would let go about $2000 different than the new 18's coming in. It came with a full windshield that blocks most of the wind and bugs. I had the dealership put on a chrome backrest and luggage rack. Haven't been able to get it out because of the 8" snow last Thursday. It's blue with a cream paint on it. Everyone looks at it and complaints it. The suspension is great just glides down the rode. I like the backrest and luggage wreck for my girlfriend to hang on. I had a Yahama cruiser with the larger engine, I had it for 7 years until I seen these one of these. The bike has a great response with the throttle and breaking. Just a wonderful ride down the highway. I can't afford the ones with the large display, but this is something I could afford. See ya down the road, Gary

A ride review from someone I trust, who knows what he's talking about! I'm very happy with my Yamaha Eluder, but that Indian is a very, very nice bike. In fact, I see a lot of similarities to my Yammy. I think people who complain the most about rear cylinder heat, aren't people who typically ride a big V-twin. It just comes with the territory. Funny, one complaint I hear a lot from Yammy owners of the Venture/Eluder is the LACK of the heal shifter as a stock item. I'm fine without it. With it, you lose most of your long floor boards. Peace and love.

Shawn, I LOVE your enthusiasm for reviewing bikes! Your voice is so calming and relaxing. I own a 2017 Indian Chieftain and I traded in a 2014 Moto Guzzi California Touring for. I like the thought process for the 2019 Chieftains, but it looks to much like a street glide to me. Would I trade in my 2017 for a new riding mode enabled bike? Quite possibly, YES. Did you find out if the new bikes have traction control? My Guzzi had both and believe me, it’s missed. Keep up the great work.

@@Mingo-lo4plwhat model Victory, let's narrow it down, Cross Country. You must have been on a Harley too long so that's what you want to see. I owned Victory before and anyone that knows a Victory fingure print can tell you these bikes have way stronger similarities. Which only makes sense since Polaris owned Victory. Why bite off the competition when Victory were good looking bikes. Polaris is ressurecting and old brand in part.

I'm a Harley guy but, here's the deal they are both great products but there is a difference between the two. When I walked Into my local BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Can Am, Sea doo, Polaris, Sling Shot, Kymco and Indian dealer, I was greeted the 19 year old motor cross dude. He was a great guy don't get me wrong. Its just different. As I walked through the sea of Motorcycles, Jetski's, side by side's Quad's and snowmobiles, I made it to the Indian show room the first thing you notice is that almost almost every bike is designed after a Harley. The Chieftain is styled like the Street Glide, The Challenger is styled like the Road glide and Chief is a Road King design. At first look you can tell that the bike looks good. They've done a good job the colors design. As I sat on them them the bars felt awkward for me but I'm sure that's because Im not used to it. But I did notice that on a Harley everything on it is designed to be seen . HD does not use plastic covers to hide Starters, oil tanks, transmissions ect. On the Indian they just plastic covers on the bikes to hide all of those things and it tends to give it the metric bike look. Also, and most surprising is on the motor they a fake head cover over it. They have tried to make it look like a head with cooling fins but its not real, you can tap it and hear the tin like sound it makes, I don't get that. Anyway, The accessories display was really small, They had only a few jackets and shirts to chose from. Last but not least when I asked about tuning and performance I found that they don't have the equipment to do any real tuning or performance. When asked they said they could send it to a guy in Portland that has a dyno.???? Its different, like I said I'm a Harley Guy but when go a Harley Store its a Harley store. Everything you need is there. Bikes, support, Gear, knowledgeable people. The bikes are about $1000 apart as an average. Ill pay that to make sure I get everything I need and the store doesn't have 10 other motorcycle franchises in it. Just my opinion.

The mode setting changes the ratio between the throttle sensor and throttle body. So in sport mode for example it might open the throttle 15% when you open it 10%. At least thats what they do in a car, along with auto trans changes.

The 2019 refresh models are better than the Chieftain classic models. They ride better, handle better, and the seat is better for long distance riding. Also the right bag has a 12VDC cigarette outlet next to the lock mechanisim.

I recently got the chance to test ride an Indian Chieftain that was the same color of this one in the video, but I had the cams, performance chip, stage on mufflers, larger air filter , and the 116 engine in it. I asked the demo truck guy to put it in ' sport mode ' before he got on a 2019 Indian Roadmaster in the lead in front of me. Grabbing a handful of throttle and winding 1-4 gears out to 3,500-3,800 rpm's made the stage one mufflers put out a really DEEP and throaty rumble. Throttle response was very snappy in ' sport mode'. I really like look of the new style seat on the 2019, Chieftain that lets you sit lower and farther from the dash.

I lean towards the vintage look of the Indian motorcycle, but I can appreciate this refresh look. I hope Indian will let the consumer still have a choice of a vintage and a modern style looking motorcycle. I like the different ride modes, the size of the screen reminds me of a small television, that I had in my room when I was a little kid...lol. Excellent 1st ride and impression video, Smoak. John Wesley 🙄 they were rated the 4th or 5th most reliable brand by JD power a couple years ago. Only the Japanese companies beat them. It’s a lot easier to hear about problems when they sell 200,000 units a year vs Indians 10,000. All motorcycles models have some problems, Harleys are reliable what you’ve heard is a myth. Indians have electrical problems, they even quit selling their stage 3 kits last summer because they were blowing up, now they’re having to change out connecting rods to do a stage 3 build. There’s Milwaukee 8s out there making 150+ horsepower on the stock rods and crank still. Just sayin. Not saying Harley is perfect but it’s a myth that they aren’t reliable.

Love the new look of the Indian. A little Victory DNA in the fairing? Always room in the carport for one of these! Just have to convince the wife that it's a good thing.

Vicdian ….nice bike , here in the UK theres not many Indian dealers but quite a few Harley dealers . I'm on my 11th Harley I had a Victory once and had paint issues in under 2 years and went back to Harley. This Indian may just sway me back its very nice just waiting to see the Raptor when its launched

Cool new features, I like the fender, mode change, and electric windshield. I am addicted to electric windshields now that I own a Vision, HOWEVER that dashboard is just too danged big or something! Thanks for your review.

I think the new Chieftain this is a wonderful great motorcycle, which deserves to be talked about. This new one is amazing, looks Amazing, and gives you a choice over the classic Chieftain, which everyone can still buy, and continue to buy in the foreseeable future. This new one, has, along with some of the other models of Indian Motorcycle, a more "up to date" design. You can still spot an Indian miles away in a sea of Harleys. People who can not see that, may not have a good eye for the shape of a motorcycle. Things evolve fast, and Indian motorcycle is exactly where they should be whit the Chieftain, - A little ahead of some of their customers, while holding on to their models with that classical shape at the same time. Indian does what they should do. They make great motorcycles. Well done Shawn Smoak!!!

I want to like the Chieftain Darkhorse, but there’s a couple things holding me back, the very main reason is power and that small motor, in comparison to what you can do with the Harley Davidson platform now with the aftermarket support such as S&S and other companies, they are making very powerful and reliable motor kits for the new Milwaukee 8s that’s very desirable. As far as suspension on the Chieftain that’s great, Harley is lacking on this , but it’s much easier to deal with suspension upgrades than it is with motor. Bottom line Indian makes a more woken-up power plant that’ll put you in higher highway speeds reliably and controllably, and then I’m in. It’s the age of the Power Cruiser👍

Great comparison shot near the end of the video of a 2018 in the background. I'm not against the '18 fairing, it was unique. Just a choice. Glad the war bonnet is back on the front fender.

I told you not long ago how I own a street bob and rode the new softails and didn’t care much for them and that I preferred the road glide to them but it was too big. Well today Harley had the demo truck at my local dealer and I rode the new sgs and I’m in love! I’ve never ridden anything that I liked more than my fxdb till today. Don’t be surprised if you see me post on Facebook that I traded my bike in lol. I’d get the 2018 though I can’t afford a 2019. Also I didn’t get to ride the fxdr sadly. It was booked all day and I only got there an hour late

Wow, what a gorgeous machine.. I am quite impressed with what Indian has done in the past few years. I did my vlog review on a 2017 and liked it back then. They have come so far in just a couple of years. I think I am going have to find a demo day to ride one of the new ones!

Always enjoy your reviews. Thanks for posting and providing a better understanding of it. I like the more traditional look but this is kinda growing on me. I do want to see how the sport mode compares to one with a PVCX tuner on it.

I hear you. This is a great looking bike packed with features. But man a Harley Street Glide or Road Glide Special is just so beautiful. I’m not talking about either company’s philosophies just about the bikes. Just saying and just my .02.

I had a 2014 Chieftain. I test road a new one with the larger front wheel without the skirts. It was a really nice ride, but my 2014 actually handled better with the standard front wheel and fatter tire. PS: I hate heel shifters also.

This is a good thing...Two fairing types...and now you have a choice of this style and the more traditional Indian style with the Springfield, Vintage and Chieftain Classic and the new style on the Chieftain and Chieftain Darkhorse. It is a tough decision which style I like better...

Every year since I sold my 1953 Harley Panhead, I find new reason not to select/choose a new Harley, this bike would be my latest reason. I would look seriously if I plan to replace my Stratoliner 1900s. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the different modes just change the throttle-by-wire- span linearity, but not producing a more powerful engine.

you know , I didn't like the new design initially but this is the first video I have seen. It has been still photos until now. in Video , it doesn't look as bad. The sport mode might save a new buyer $1,500-$2,000 on a stage kit upgrade. Me on my 2017 RM , I feel I need a stage one or two. And the rear cylinder shut down will help combat the heat at stops. I have been real hard on Indian for the new design. Maybe I should give it time. My Vision had to grow on me too
