2019 Mercedes Benz E 450 4MATIC Wagon Review - Should I SWAP?

Should I swap? On the exterior, my 2011 Cadillac CTS wagon and this 2019 Mercedes-Benz E 450 look fairly similar. But a lot can change in 8 years, not to mention, the Benz is WAY more expensive! M.S.R.P. - $88,535.

Thanks for a great review. Our 2000 e320 Wagon has been a stellar, reliable family-mobile for the 7 of us. It's still lightening quick & handles tight & rattle free @ 215,000 with only routine hoses, belt & fluid changes. Still gets 22 city & 25 highway mpg and is comfortable on cross country tours. Our kids enjoy the rear facing jump seat, too. The Benz is built to be a 500,000 + mile / 30 + year trustworthy transport, and they're priced accordingly. Now, I'm a DIY mechanic so I always buy my Benz's as clean original owner cars at about 10-12 years old & 100k miles. I've pay between 5-8,000 never more, and have never had a major issue just minor maintenance, small repair stuff. These cars & SUVs are so tough they dont fail just wear out very slowly, and the aftermarket has the parts dirt cheap by that time. The stories of Benzes being troublesome are normally anecdotal OR the rare case of one so neglected long term that it's a case of pure maintenance negligence. It IS True that MB Dealers tend to overcharge for maintenance & repairs (virtually all Dealers do...of all makes !) so locating a good Independent German Garage is a great idea. Or in my case I already worked as a Service Tech for Mitsubishi, Nissan & Dodge so I just immersed myself in Mercedes work and became knowledgeable about my specific models - currently a 2002 ML500 & the aforementioned 2000 e320 wagon. That's all my .02 worth - hope its profitable for some ! David in Texas

I LOVE wagons! I really wish they'd make a comeback in the USA. Compared to CUVs, I find them to be easier to live with. They feel less cumbersome to drive. Easier to get in and out of. Better handling. Better MPG. Lower cargo lift over. The only CUV advantage is a better view of your surroundings. That E450 looks like one sweet ride. Not really a fan of the front end jellybean styling. I think the previous gen had a much classier and more luxury look. My advice is to keep that Cadillac, unless you're having problems with it and it's high mileage. It's a rare car, which is cool. That Mercedes will undoubtedly turn into a money pit outside the warranty terms. It's packed full of electronic gizmos that will probably give you lots of of headache after awhile. Soft close doors are POINTLESS. To really take advantage of them, you'd have to close the door so gently, people would think there's something wrong with you, not to mention you'd had to remind every passenger every time to close the door like they're handling a Faberge egg. Silly nonsense to get more repair money out of you.

Nice to see there are more wagon fans out there. The U.S. auto market sucks when comes to being able to get the car you want. Not everyone likes a suv.

That's funny, cause Chris has had his Caddy for 8 years with over 120k miles on it with no problems... hence the inquiry. We find that if you search diligently enough, you can find whatever facts you're looking for, positive or negative, even further down the comments section of this very video. At any rate, we always enjoy the banter. Thanks for watching, Al J. Granda!

The third row seat is a joke! The best rear facing seat I've ever seen can be found on a Old School Chrysler Town & Country minivan. Those seats fold out to provide a picnic seating feature with the lift gate providing shade.

Torsee it’s meant to accommodate toddlers for short trips. As a family of 4 I have 2 car seats and can only have my wife and one more adult in the car. But for occasional out od town in law visits, I can have one car seat removed have total of 4 adults in the cae, while my 4 yr old can seat in the “cool rear seat.” Beats the hell out of having a van or stupid SUVs with 3rd row.

Mercedes offers an acoustic upgrade package, really Chris? "Hey buyers, our car is already as quiet as a bank vault, but just give us another thousand bucks and we'll make it even quieter for you". Those Germans sure do love financially sodomizing buyers with ridiculously overpriced option packages. If I was in the market for a wagon, I'd look at the Volvo V90 T6 Cross Country. In fact, I'd love to see Chris drop a Volvo review every now and then.

@@edcarra113 Fair enough. This is why it's available as a sedan (R.I.P., coupe), too. Or you could buy a crossover. Plenty of options, but they're all expensive. We're happy there are plenty of good vehicles at lower price points, but we can't deny the experience that a Mercedes offers.

@@MG-yu6do I had a late 80's E-class. SO MANY PROBLEMS. It was quite a money pit, and that's a Mercedes from back in the day when they were supposedly at the top of their game and making "over engineered" vehicles. In terms of reliability, I wasn't impressed.
