2019 ZIA SCALE NATIONALS - SORRCA RC rock crawling competition
Class 1
Welcome to 2019 ZIA scale nationals RC crawling competition!
This is it! This is the cream of the crop of competition RC crawlers! This is the Superbowl of RC scale challenge! This is where you can watch what the best in the business build and how they drive! You will find so many amazing builds and skilled drivers.
I've met so many talented people and made friends there. It was an honor to meet with great names in the field such as John Holmes (Holmes hobbies) , Ben Moren (Toyzuki Fabrication), Ikaika Farrior(The Crawl Space), Scott Cawthon (Vader product), Jose Meza(RC4WD), Christoper schumann (Team Garage Hack). Thank you all for sponsoring this great event and for being just awesome people to hang with!
And of course, I'd like to thank the organizer Joe Perea, Scot Mckee and Christian Hitt from NMRCC for making this event flawless from beginning to the end.
I did miss very beginning ( concourse night ) and last day ( class 3 and reward ) but I had 2 full day of extreme challenge.
If you are into rock crawling, you need to come this annual event. You won't regret it.
I will be uploading class 1 final, class 2 and class 2 final videos in the future
Thank you all for watching and subscribing. And go enjoy some RC!

What's the point of using a winch (+3) to get a progress (-2). That's a net of +1. Are you not allowed to skip a gate, i.e. you get a DNF?
@slopppy75
@slopppy75 4 жыл бұрын
ScaleCrawling. Correct. All the gates has to be progressed in order and the direction they were intended. You can’t skip the gates so you have to progress through them any way possible. If it’s un-drivable, the best option is using winch, tow rope if not equipped with winch, or straddling the gate( drive at least 1 front and 1 rear tire between the gates ) Winching is the cheapest option. If you DNF, you get DNF point( usually 80 ) minus progress points. So if you progress gate 6 and DNF, you’ll have 80-12=68 points.

What's with no backing up? is there some super "scale" reason for that?
@slopppy75
@slopppy75 5 жыл бұрын
It’s actually not “no reverse” although I insert that message in the video. You get penalty point (+1) whenever you initiate reversing( you can backup as long as you want for single penalty). Penalizing backing up really changes the game. It forces you to think before you drive and take any line. Without it, driver can just casually and carelessly drive the course.

What type sterring servo you all use
@slopppy75
@slopppy75 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason. It’s hard to say what is most popular because there are so many great servos with different performance ( power vs speed ) available. But the steering is one of the most important part that needs to be work well in comp so you want to pick the right servo for your driving style. Generally speaking big higher dollar servo tends to be stronger, faster and last longer( not always ). Keep in mind that power and speed is inversely related assuming it’s powered by same motor. So I would recommend allocate as much budget as you can on the servo and buy the one that has best reviews. And don’t forget to add BEC

I agree there are some over-the-top movement (and my editing) but I am not sure what you're considering unrealistic. Perhaps pendulum winching? (1:1 guys use it) let me know. I don't want this video to discourage you
@hillkillr
@hillkillr 5 жыл бұрын
@@slopppy75 all the stuff where they use centrifugal force from high speed wheel spin to right themselves. In 1:1 scale I've only ever seen monster trucks pull off anything even near similar. Around 15:42 in the video is one example. For the record though, I'll still investigate local comps, I was just disheartened somewhat from this video.
@slopppy75
@slopppy75 5 жыл бұрын
True.. The self righting is such a common technique, I didn't see it that way. Like i said, don't let this one discourage you. This is an event known for extremely difficult courses to weed out good from the best and that attracts high-level competition builders and drivers. There is 'whatever it takes to get thru that gate' mentality which can be very fun and challenging fun but also can intimidate some. Local comps can be a lot more relaxed and more newcomer oriented.
@hillkillr
@hillkillr 5 жыл бұрын
@@slopppy75 It's less about intimidation and more about being disappointed that it can be less realistic than I thought. But maybe that's just a hangup that I'll have to get over to enjoy the competition aspect of RC crawling. Thanks for responding though, I appreciate the added perspective.

@slopppy75
@slopppy75 5 жыл бұрын
Scale points are awarded to the trucks with scale items to promote more scale appearance. For example, points are given to the trucks with - interior, scale driver and passenger, separate bumpers, roof racks, shovel, spare tire, working lights, working winches, and the list goes on. Generally speaking, better looking trucks with more scale items on board take more effort to build and they are heavier - less capable on the course. So they are compensated. Mostly custom made if you want the speed. There is a few different ways to make a fast winch. Faster servo, higher voltage, spool with larger diameter or any combination of three. I have a power shift roadrunner internal spool servo winch and it is pretty fast once I filled spool completely.

I really dislike this style of comp. Why bother with the " scalness " if the truck is you arent running scale obstacles ..and it's not scale as you would never run that fast 1:1

Volts auto installs jlozeau you’re correct in saying that the obstacles are way too extreme in real scale. However, we can really challenge physics with toy trucks because we are not afraid of flipping the real truck or falling off of cliff that could cause serious damages or even injuries and deaths. And trust me, if we put these trucks on a scale-ish obstacles, 90% of drivers here would have perfect scores. It’s hardly a competition.

that was not really what you'd call a fair trail run it was way out of scale for the type of vehicles being run

It’s a bit over the top. However, you give these guys scaled down terrain, they will fly through it and there will be a lot of perfect scores. Difficult terrain will separate the best from good drivers. And it’s fun!

Car bodies on crawlers.... NO...

Although I agree that it was an odd choice, I appreciate any unique hardbodies especially because it takes a lot of work to make it work. I believe the builder sacrificed a lot of clearance in order to fit this body.
