Lovely laid back natural video mate, just perfectly sums up the emotional aspect of motorcycling, and on a bike which whilst not matching contemporary bikes on the conventional front, punches a mile above its weight on the emotive front. After watching this, I am now seriously tempted to buy one to pog around on the lanes on Exmoor where I live. A couple of years ago I owned a Ducati Hyperstrada and one day "for no particular reason" (sorry Forest Gump) I decided that instead of scratching the sh*t out of it I would follow a piece of advice my late father told me which was" 45 to 50 miles an hour is a wonderful speed on a motorbike" of course in my 20s I thought he was daft but 25 years on from that I woke up one beautiful warm summer day and wondered if his message held a secret that in 300k miles of motorcycling I had simply missed out on, so that day I put on an open faced helmet and forced myself to take my normal routes across the moor at a maximum of 50 mph and it was one of the most enjoyable rides I have ever taken in my entire life. I was a bit freaked out on the corners because my brain was computing them at much higher speeds so mI screwed up the lines but apart from that, I learned a valuable lesson. Speed is not actually the real spiritual centre of biking, we think it is for a long time but really it is not, it is really what you have shown here on this video, and if we all chilled out and just absorbed the beauty of nature and had time to contemplate how lucky wee are to be able to just ride a characterful bike, many of us could find more contentment than giving into our egos.

Possibly one of the nicest comments I’ve had the pleasure of reading, thank you very much indeed. I’m in total agreement that the change in pace is tricky to begin with, certainly when riding a quick bike slowly. But the enjoyment it brings almost comes as a shock. *edit* oops! Hit the send key before I finished. Anyway thanks again and I hope you continue to enjoy your steady rides. All the best Jeff

My 2018 Battle Green is the second best bike I owned. The best one was the 1990 BMW R 80 GS. I sold it because a friend died when his BMW K100RT was smashed by a lost controlled car that hit front. The Royal Enfield Classic is the 16th bike in 50 years motorcycling. I have no intention to sell it. None other in the market seduces me. It's a supreme pleasure to run it in with the kick starter; I use it more often than the electric starter. It'is a easy, simple, like a steam locomotive. It has good off road capacities. It's relaxing to ride it, reaching places that I never would discover by other ways. I opted to keep the rear seat in place in order to throw the saddlebags away and go camping wilderness, alone, feeling the silence, the birds, and the streaming water. Almost nothing else makes happier,.. except doing the same with a bicycle.

I bought the classic chrome and black new back in 2020, one of the very last batch, in fact it was the last one the dealer had. I have loved it since day one! I fitted the Hitchcocks silencer the second day I had it. I took it for it's first MOT yesterday as it's now 3 years old. One of the best reviews I have watched and certainly the most accurate. I really did enjoy this, as well as you "First thoughts" video. In fact, I enjoyed the last one so much that, when I learned that the 500 Classic had come to an end I bought one. It arrived mid-May, delayed a little due to this Bug. I share so many of your views and I really am enjoying riding my 500 Classic and running it in. I have had my 300 miles service and am now on 500 miles. I intend to continue to develop my engine running-in beyond 1,000 miles in line with Jeff Slade's advice. This will make the engine smooth throughout the rev. range. These really are the most delightful bikes to ride and I cannot think of a finer way to enjoy the UK s beautiful countryside than on the sale of a 500 Clasic Bullet. In my view, your film and words capture this beautifully. Please bring on the next one: I will look out for it!

Wow! What a huge compliment, thank you so much. Congratulations and welcome to the royal family. There are so many opinions on which running in process is best. As you have seen, I just passed the 1’000 mile mark. I’m going to carry on building revs and load over the next 200 or so, and then 100-200 hard. Then I’ll change the oil and ride as I please thereafter. I hope you get as much pleasure out of yours as I do mine. It sounds like you already are. Thanks again and take care 👍🏼
@jeffslade18924 жыл бұрын
@@Saddlebags73 Hi - yes it is important for the oil to be in good condition when running-in. Whilst still a bit tight, the oil gets chewed up and the crud is not good for the motor. Regarding wallowing on bends, do set the pressures as Avon recommend F28 R29, especially the front. The handbook says 18psi which wrong and is not for Roadrider but some indian tyre. On my bike it became apparent the factory had not put the full amount of oil in the forks. Correcting that made them perform perfectly. They should be 'soft' 5 weight. But they are dual rate springs and double acting dampers, they are not 'simple' like on the Guzzi. I estimated the actual blood line to be around 6800 to 7000 rpm. The limiter on mine is reset (complicated) to 6000rpm and it will go there. In other words you cannot over-rev the motor with the stock rev limiter. Running the motor too slow so it's going, "pukka pukka pukka", may well hammer the bottom end. It really doesn't like pulling top gear below 35-40mph, it likes to be running around peak torque at 4000rpm 66mph. Power band roughly 3000-5000rpm 50 to 80mph.
@Saddlebags734 жыл бұрын
Jeff Slade Hi, and thanks for all the advice. Regarding tyre pressures, I knew that the book must be mistaken and have been running 28/32 so not too far out. I haven’t checked the fork oil, I should have a look. I try not to put the engine under too much load a low revs. Hopefully what I’m doing is working, it certainly feels like it’s working. In comparison to an 8000 mile model I test rode, the vibrations are minimal. It’s only when I get to 65mph things begin to buzz and I ease off.
@jeffslade18924 жыл бұрын
@@Saddlebags73 I am 95kg but was heavier, and have managed to lose 5 stone. So I add a little more in the rear. 65mph in top is 4000rpm and peak torque, the start of the true power band. It ought to pull hard from there upwards. So yeah, bring it up to that vibration in the earlier gears and it will gradually dissipate and let you rev higher as it should. I was asked to write an essay on this, in Facebook - Royal Enfield GB 'files' "running in advice" (PDF) - lookaside.fbsbx.com/file/Running-In%20Advice.pdf?token=AWzPmwgqtQ1m5ynStOPlS2qGa1OHuRpSVq7pfH-4GhtJjtFrEGoE2CHYYC0awYC4Dvw9HyNde2s8seowCNdl-6InP1pBFcyumA5G7u75-kOQFLQw2bo_hUNRLrfLrXNwAWvj2dWDmvtEJY1D4SLj1NbTCi48B_BPFFIO8yN-upu-sZ1awRxrBWaxxedWJlSUCNBnZImjuy5vsd3PutQZDvPXKYrj8aojgRRo2TU5RknaHgXLEiqF4K8O6moVt7a6VbqA5egDceH_V_7Eo3uRwZrvE3WqANxc1-juhchHwsxzMQ If you can't see that then most of it is in the description of my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHe9gaScaNZ8aa8

Really enjoyed this video and “riding along with you”. Some years ago I owned an Electra X 500 (which seemed to make a lot of people angry for some bizarre reason). I think the Electra X was a stop gap between the original Bullet and the new versions with fuel injection. I used it as a daily commuter and loved it. On the A and B roads it handled beautifully. Mine would sit happily at 60/65mph all day. It pulled back 80mpg as regular as clockwork. It was hell to keep clean and looked very shabby after a winters worth of commuting. I found that after I moved to working in London it didn’t like motorway commuting. These bikes were designed and built for British A and B roads long before motorways and that’s where they are at their happiest.

Beautiful bike. I have a 2013 B5 Bullet, in dark green with gold pinstriping that I bought new, and almost immediately converted from EFI to an Amal carburetor using a kit from Hitchcocks. I also replaced the stock cat con torpedo with an aftermarket exhaust very similar to what you have. Those two modifications completely changed the bike and made it 10 times better. I now have 14K+ MILES on it, and it still runs fine. I have a chance to buy a new leftover 2019 Chrome Classic from a local dealer, but my understanding is that they cannot be converted to a carburetor, and if that is the case, I wouldn't be interested. I don't ride mine like a crotch rocket, so the solid footpegs are not a problem. I use it for a country road cruising bike. I just love the feel and sound. Classic British all the way (I'm the former owner of a 1966 Triumph Bonneville, wish I still had it) I ride mine at around 55 MPH most of the time. That seems to be it's sweet spot in top gear. I have ridden an R1. Yes it's fast, but it's also drop dead boring. Like it had an electric motor. And it is unbelievably uncomfortable, like you're standing on your head. My Enfield has a drum rear brake and NO ABS (I would never own a bike with ABS, I wouldn't buy it if the ABS couldn't be disabled) I also use a battery tender. My original battery died after less than a month, and when I went to replace it the battery cables broke, so I had to replace them too. The Royal Enfield 500 single is not what I would call a well made bike, but the pleasure of riding it easily outweighs the few problems I've had with it, most of them showed up and got taken care of within the first couple thousand miles. I ride a Royal Enfield (converted to a carburetor) and a 1979 Harley Sportster Ironhead to AVOID technology, which is the LAST thing I want on a motorcycle.

Your bike sounds fantastic. I think I have just learnt to accept technology, as sad as that sounds. I only caught the pegs a couple of times, whilst finding it limits. I’m quite happy to potter around on it. As you say, 55 is perfect for it. I have a modern in line 4. Lovely bike. Smooth, powerful and reliable, but lacking character. Nothing I’ve ridden matches the Classic in that respect. Thank you for watching, and sharing your story 👍🏼 Take care out there.

@@Saddlebags73 I'm 62, and started riding at age 10 on an old Bultaco dirt bike. I just can't accept computer technology on a motorcycle. I have 6 bikes, all of them are carbureted, none of them have ABS, one of them is liquid cooled, a 1985 Kawasaki. But the Model T was liquid cooled. The RE Classic is indeed a wonderful bike. Thanks for the video. Great idea! i have owned my 2019 since May 2020...bought her with 27 km on it ... and by 1500 had to replace the battery :(. Also, my high beams are not working...the dealership has ordered a whole new set up for the high beams...but no answers as to why it isn;t working in the first place. Anyways ... She's had her first service, battery was replaced on warranty and I've got 2050 km on her now. ... starts everytime (as she should have in the first place!) . Still waiting for the high beams to be shipped in ... not what I was hoping to be dealing with having purchased a brand new bike! I love her set up, mellow suspension for sure. Great weight ... good work out! I'm 5'2", 120 pounds.

Hi there, thanks for watching. I have heard other complaints about the battery. Mine seems ok so far but I do leave it connected to a tender when I’m not using it. I hope you get the high beam issue sorted, I haven’t heard of that one before. It’s a shame when little niggles spoil the enjoyment. Best of luck and ride safe 👍🏼

I would say the Classic 500 is "superbly sufficient" in most every way. I LOVE my battle green 500, ("Oddball" be his name) as it is trimmed out to look like a US Army courier bike of the WWII era and folks get quite the puzzled look when I tell them it's not even CLOSE to being that old. That conundrum led me to the moniker of the wacky tank commander character (Donald Sutherland) in "Kelly's Hero's"...a guy from another era. These bikes are just so comfortable, fun and easy to ride and are remarkably nimble. You won't get there fast but you'll arrive with a silly grin every time. At least I do. Your review is spot on with my observations and I concur that a taller/bigger/heavier rider might feel a bit cramped but there are mods with seats and bars that can open that up a bit. I put a Lycette type of spring seat on mine which sits you back a couple inches, giving more legroom. Bikes can be made to fit most riders with some minor mods here and there. Cheers from southwest USA!

I have the same Hitchcocks exhaust which sounds truly great, I've kept the pillion seat as my wife enjoys coming with me and it may only have 27HP but two up is no problem the torque is great for two up riding. I would agree it is possible the best bike I've owned it has put the fun back into motorcycling and be prepared to have lots of admirers when you park up from young to old the all want to know about the bike. No other bike in my collection draws so much attention. Great review and video work excellent review.

@@tomstockell9481 No problem. First, the reasons I changed the exhaust. Bear in mind I only changed the silencer, and still run the original header. 1. I don’t like the look of the standard silencer. This is of course down to the individual, but for me it was far too long. 2. It was far too quiet. A big single should come with a bang, and it didn’t. (Again, personal preference). 3. The standard silencer incorporates a cat, which is restrictive. (I cannot vouch for any difference in performance, as I was still running the bike in when I fitted it). 4. Weight. I’m afraid I don’t remember the numbers, but the stock silencer is a hefty lump. The replacement is well under half. I fitted a Hitchcocks silencer, which is a UK company. It’s great quality and sounds louder than the original, without being anti social. There are other options. Another KZbin channel, ‘iRidetas’ has an AEW Goldstar fitted to his Classic chrome. Same results for less money I reckon. If you want a link to the Hitchcocks pipe I’ll add it to the comment, but if I’m honest it’s going to be expensive compared to others. I hope that’s some help 👍🏼

Enjoyed your review which brought back great memories. I had a Classic for 2 years till March this year, and I agree with most of your comments. Sadly I had to swap it for an Interceptor (sad in that I could not have both) for 2 reasons...one that it was too slow for the biking companions I want to ride with, and two was the forward positioned footpegs that put too much load though my back on long journeys. Absolutely! I’ve had my RE 500 Pegasus for nearly 3 years and I love it to bits, and one of the reasons I got it was because it’s got NO CHROME on it! You don’t notice the mud and crud with the camo paintwork/livery. Cars, trucks, bikes? I clean them possibly once a year - if they need it or not, but any windows, mirrors, lights, numberplates are always pristine, and they’re always well maintained PS: On one occasion some biker, whose leathers probably cost more than my (Other bike: an old Harley Ironhead) said to me “I don’t like Harleys, but I like yours!” “Why?” “Well, it’s covered in shit! You actually ride it in the rain!“ “Of course I do; it’s a workhorse not an ornament.“ But if polishing chrome floats your boat, then go for it! I won the Pegasus limited edition and I share some of the thumb downs with you but my main beef is with the tank. Filling her up requires a bit of fussing as there is very little room for the modern fuel nozzle to go it and tends to cut out if you want to fill to quickly - just not enough room there. I also removed the pillion seat and out an ammo box in its place. I also have the Hitchcock's slip on (in matt black) which I put on after a rather disappointing experiment with a cheap Indian made aftermarket jobbie. I did fit a powertronics ECU - a Hitchcock's performance airfilter and upgraded to a 19 tooth sprocket and I love the bike as it is now. It is true that this bike is so satisfying to ride - my Suzuki VZ800 Marauder has been standing still since I got "Badger" - better in comfort, handling and MUCH better brakes. Also, you better not be in a hurry when pulling over where there are people. I don't think I stopped anywhere without a 10 minute chat with someone coming over and admiring the bike.

Hi! Yes fuelling does require a little patience admittedly. In time I may go up to the 19 tooth sprocket and other bits and pieces. For the time being I’m happy with it. @@Saddlebags73 well a short review after a few rides. Vibration is hardly noticeable apart from the mirrors. Even getting up to the current maximum speed of 40mph you certainly feel the torque. Fit and finish IMHO is no worse or better than any other major manufacturer. The hand detailing on the tank is a nice human touch. The ride is ultra comfy. Like you, I have removed pillion seat this is a must. Hitchcock's recommend the booster plug even from new to richen the stupidly lean mixture. First up, great review mate. I'm from Australia and have the same bike, 2019 Classic Chrome and green. I had my first service at 500km, and the next one is at 3000km. However I did an extra oil change at 1700 km, using the service kit from Hitchcocks. Great place to buy stuff, even for down under. I have the same muffler put on the bike at new, also got the Carbery plate installed and a 19 tooth sprocket. We have longer distance roads so the 19 tooth is a must. Other than that i will probably leave it as is. Your comments re riding the bike is spot on, it makes you smile whenever you go for a spin. I did test ride the 650 twin, but went with my heart instead of my head so went the 500. I just loved the classic look. I may get panniers at some stage, but haven't decided on the style of bag yet. Yes it is a slow bike but still a great bike to ride.

Totally agree. What ever happened to a petcock with a reserve position?
@rhonda-my_honda_cb500x34 жыл бұрын
@@seavan5995 Alas, petcock taps with reserve went out with gravity-fed or low pressure vacum-powered diaphragm pumps to carburettors. I too, initially thought "How hard could it be?..." until I started thinking more about the the engineering demands behind EFI. . For a fuel injection nozzle to work properly, you need continuously consistently moderately pressurised fuel feed behind them. Which most easily comes from an electric fuel pump. And the most space-saving place to put 'em, is inside the fuel tank. These same pumps also derive their cooling and sort-of lubrication from the fuel itself, and they really DON'T like being run dry or with no fluid load on them too often or for too long before they crap out on you. Similarly with the injectors themselves, when they close after dispensing their computed charge, they rely on the pressurised fuel to act as a cushion on the needle-nozzle seat as they close. Without it, you run the risk of premature failure of the nozzle due to the seat getting hammered out. So you can see how trying to use manual mechanical petcocks for a 'reserve' provision is sooner or later going to be an expensive proposition for the owner of an EFI engine. Therefore, the 'best' solution is 'just' a fuel warning light. When it first comes on and stays on, that is the point where you're 'running on reserve'. . The next question naturally becomes 'Well, how much reserve have I got?" Does the Bullet Owner's Manual make any statement about remaining fuel in the tank when the light comes on? {Handes up/'fess up time; how many of you have actually sat down and RTFIM? ;-p }. In my situation, the owner's manual for my Honda CB500X says that the nominal reserve fuel quantity is 'approximately 2.8l'. With considerable emphasis on the word "approximately". If the Bullet only has a 13l tank, I speculate it might be divided something like 11litres main, and 2l 'reserve'. . But when the fuel light comes on, the immediate practical question becomes, "How far can I now go before I conk out completely?" A while after I bought 'Rhonda', I decided to conduct my own 'Reserve Range Anxiety Test'; Naturally I had a spare 5.5l jerry can of petrol in the topbox, knowing that'd easily get me to the next fuelling station. So, bimbling along at 80km/h as soon as 'Reserve' started flashing, I found when the engine finally gasped its last on all possible vapours, I had travelled 81.7km. . For Bulleteers, I speculate your best econo-speed might be 70km/h and I've been hearing fuel economy reports of 30+km/litre. Therefore I would speculate when your reserve fuel light comes on, you've got between 50 and 60km before your Royal Enfield turns into a T.R.I.U.M.P.H. {To Ride It U Must Push Hard } ;-D

I own a class chrome 500 to, 2016 model, has a sweet gear box shifts better than my 06 busa ..! Never need to look for the neutral light, above 70 mph my teeth fillings work loose.... best seat of any bike I’ve owned, the tube tyre are a pain had 3 rear flats in the space of a year one was 100 miles from home long wait for a mate to come get me other 2 were close to home, learned don’t run the manual tyre pressures now run rear 36 psi and front 32 psi , no flats since, and was quite surprised with the handling, better than my old Honda 500 four from back in time, ditched the pipe, K&N air filters and chucked the bosh spark plug for a NGK idles much better the Bosh is a crap made Indian plug, also changed the spark plug cap its cheep and crappy to an after market one ,Runs smoother now.

The gearbox is lovely now. It seemed to improve over time. I rarely ride this one at 70 but it does buzz when I do. Thankfully I haven’t had a flat yet. I run the pressures higher than the recommended. That’s way too low I think. I agree, throw the original plug away. NgK are far better. Many thanks 👍🏼🙂

What a great video! I have been watching your back catalogue...I struggle to 'keep up' with the channels I am already sub'd to... last thing I need is to be sub'd to any more, but, I couldn't resist! :-) I have no idea why anyone buys a bike like an RE Classic then sets about improving the performance. Er....you should have bought a different bike! My bike is black, and I thought that was difficult to clean, what it must take keeping Ernie looking like that I have no idea!

Paul Lee Hi, oh don’t go too far back, it gets embarrassing 😋 I myself sub to too many channels and struggle to keep up with them. So I’m very grateful for your time. Yes I’m of the same opinion regarding performance mods. I’ll probably do the booster plug, but not in search of better performance. It is quite hard to keep it shiny, but I did exaggerate in the video. It’s very satisfying when I’ve finished polishing too. Thanks again!

Solid pegs ,kick start is something my Matchless ,Triumph ,BSA and many others all had . Im hoping with the new 350 Meteor coming out the last of the 500s will be sold off cheaper. Fond memories of its simplicity as I learned how to work on bikes, subsequently honed to perfection when I acquired a 350 Triumph.....on which most things seemed to go wrong, including a bit of spontaneous combustion when stuck in Bristol's rush hour traffic one day ! Picked up my beautiful Desert Storm Classic 500 last week only 2 weeks after picking up my new Continental GT 650. I was in the Royal Enfield dealers ( Salt Creek Motorcycles down here in sunny Australia ) looking at some gear and was looking at the new Desert Storm Classic 500 that had just been delivered to the shop that day, when my wife turned and said to me why did you not buy that model and you should buy it now before it goes. I immediately thought this is a trick question and a trap of some sort be careful how you answer this my son, but no she was serious and I bought it 5 mins later. In my 46 years of marriage and owned possibly over 30 bikes, I have never had my wife encourage me to buy a bike. I now have the beautiful dilemma of what bike should I ride each day. I still cannot believe my beautiful wife Jan let me buy 2 new bikes in 2 weeks...Maybe I will wake from a dream.

I love the look of the classic British motorcycle, the tradition, the feel... but I don't like the maintenance issues and lack of power, not to mention overall performance. If I were buying in this category I'd go for the Triumph Bonneville or similar for those reasons, classic look less 1930s technology. That's what has kept me on Japanese machines for 55 years and counting. Beautiful motorcycle, though.

Good review saddlebags and intresting content. Questions- I didn't know about the service interval was so short. Do you think you will tackle it yourself? How do you deal with the fuel gauge situation. Wait for the light or keep it topped up? I guess the light is hard to see in sunlight so easy to miss? I'm surprised about the fuel cap but I guess it adds to the simplicity charm. I still want one, it will be intresting to see what the 350 is like when thy come out. Good eye opener that, thanks for sharing 👍🍻
@Saddlebags734 жыл бұрын
Hey ER! First off, thank you! Much appreciated. Although I know someone who could do a better job 😉 Regarding servicing: I’ll probably do the majority myself, oil changes and simple stuff. Valve clearances etc, I’m undecided. Probably capable, probably can’t be bothered 🤣 Fuel wise: Initially I thought I’d just fill up every 150 miles, but soon lost track of that. Now, if I can’t remember how many miles since I filled it, old school cap off and rock the bike. If I can see it sloshing I should be good for 100 miles. Haven’t seen the warning light yet, perhaps because the sun is shining 🤣 Always surprised how little it takes though. Fuel cap though...I feel short changed. Cheers mate 🍻

Great look around thanks This is a real motorcycle , not the ubiquitous black blob and plastic that these days seems the norm . Agree on the mirror change , buddy seat removal and exhaust change although the straight looks great I’d be tempted with the Dunstall Decibel repo (£66 in chrome) its just as I like the blat it gives to thumpers and reverse cone Mega’ s have been around for decades so would still be in keeping No one can say it’s not a real stand out looker , I always loved burnishing my old bikes , nothing beats chrome and alloy gleaming in the sun. Old fashioned? Sure so is a Brough or Vincent but my god what iconic machines . My biggest let down you mentioned is the gear box as I owned an Enfield GT Continental and it was the slickest box on any bike I have ever had , You say it’s clunky is it Japanese clunky or much worse? And have you had any mechanical issues at all ? Cheers for the info I’m looking at this or the Interceptor just depends how nostalgic I feel. Had loads of Japanese, great bikes go like hell super reliable but bland as hell. Happy biking 👍🏻 Lee

Lee B thank you! I’m over the moon with the bike. The clunk I mention is only between 1st and 2nd, but it’s improved over time. It was still a smooth change, just made a noise. I’m on almost 2’000 miles now, and the only single issue I’ve had was the o2 sensor worked loose. 20 second fix with a spanner. I couldn’t advise on which bike to go for, I think the Interceptors and GT’s are gorgeous too. You would be lucky to find a new Classic 500 now though. I think my local dealer has 1 ‘Tribute Black’ left, and that sadly was the final run of the 500’s. Thanks for your comment, I’ll look into the exhaust you recommend.
