I was in the Vandegrift Band from 2011-2013 and looking back I took for granted how exceptional of an organization it was. My free-time-hungry teenage self wanted something else but the discipline and commitment is incredible. Throughout, this isn’t just one of the best marching ensembles in the country but one of the best organizations, period. The culture was such a balance of perfectionism and meritocracy with inclusiveness and camaraderie when pretty much every other organization I’ve been a part of has had one, the other, or neither.

Titus Wang for sure this years boa will go down in history! But while it was their first time at grand nats Vandegrift isn’t exactly a new band. They’re obviously a top texas band coming in 3rd at the state competition last year and 2nd at boa San Antonio this year!

Saw their finals performance. Definitely deserving of 1st place it was just DCI at that point seriously p.s. not seriously. If you have a brain you know that BOA and DCI are separate fields of competition. I was a student at Carmel HS the year before this season and I still think this show took the cake compared to both of the shows I was a part of. It humbled me and showed me that we are all capable of truly amazing things and without this activity my life would be so bland. Remember to show love to everyone who is a part of this activity. When you get older and you can’t be a part of it anymore you’ll realize what a great thing it is that we have.

I'm a Castle HS, Newburgh, IN (Castle Marching Knights) band mom. Trumpet player class of 2019; she's now on scholarship at Ball State U. ANYWAY, I went to BOA and saw you in LOS. You were fabulous. Thanks for posting the video that hones in on the drumline. After trumpets, I cheer the loudest for the drumline. You did an excellent job being the "spine" that creates a structure for the rest of the musicians. Also noted: you had to ride the bus for several hours to get to Indy. So much hard, physical and mental work for months to get to this point of performance. God bless musicians, especially those who can play and march complex patterns at the same time. High Fives to you all (and your directors, pit crew, chaperones, drivers, boosters, school administrators, community donors, etc.)

There is something symmetrically appealing to a matched grip line that is properly taught like this one. Stick angles, heights, mechanics, etc.. And the transference to all of the other percussion instruments must be something that has gone into the thought process of playing matched, not to mention the recruiting of a snare line each year. I mean, if a few guys graduate - you have tenors and basses and others in the line to draw from to replace them. Otherwise in a traditional grip line you are constantly having to train the left hands of young percussionists and to what end? To play snare drum in the marching band. Other than jazz drum set there is no advantage in my opinion. And this is coming from an old dude who marched under D.C.I. Hall of Fame member Tom Float and was taught by a guy who marched in the Air Force Drum & Bugle Corps! I applaud the lines I see going matched when they are properly taught. Bravo!!

Excellent performance. When I was in band in school half the band I was in wanted to goof around instead of work hard. So much more is accomplished when you have an entire band working hard. It also helps to have other advantages like having a big city band that way you can get plenty of sponsorships to bring in money for experienced staff. More money doesn't always win but if you have more people to help clean things faster, the cleaner it can be.

I understand that people think traditional grip is better, but most don't understand that when playing traditional, it needs to be played THE RIGHT WAY. A lot of drumlines play flat handed. That's one of the reasons my Drumlines always play matched. It's easier to play and clean matched than traditional. Teaching the basic fundamentals while learning to play traditional is a lot of work and everyone doesn't gravitate to it like others. Not saying that's why Vandegrift doesn't do it, but matched grip is better when building a Drumline and also when cleaning music.
