It being so expensive takes the fun out of it. Rathbone and Oettinger are nice FWA, but you have to hit the top 3-4 guys to even break even
@Fultoncards2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ken. Yes. But mathematically, there is no such thing as breaking even during box breaks, except for the person who pulls the case hit. On average, the value of open boxes is about 25% of box prices. With inflation, it may now be closer to 15%. We are paying for the experience of opening the box. If we are looking to "break even," that can only be done by targeting cards with 100% certainty directly on eBay. Anyone who says otherwise, is probably misinformed or simply gambling.
@kenchan47742 жыл бұрын
@@Fultoncards Yes, ripping is usually a losing proposition. But I think of it in terms of last year's SPA, which I got for $119 USD. I was lucky to hit a Dach FWA and a Poehling FWA in my only box. With the price being around 3 times as expensive, there's no incentive to open any boxes. Rather just buy on eBay. All base cards have no value, and even Retro FWA are a fraction of the regular FWA values even though they are usually much rarer. Losing around $300 USD every box is too expensive for my experience! Also, I think you would find this anecdote funny: Someone on Instagram said he opened $10k of product and made $100k in sales this year. There is definitely something hard to fathom.
@Fultoncards2 жыл бұрын
Well said. I agree completely. That also relates to the inflation in the broader economy. But, my comment really is to hint at the fact that the hobby has reached the same popularity as the 1990s. This time, average consumers will lose much more than in the 1990s. In 20 years from now, no one will care about any of these cards other than McDavid and a few superstars. The entire hobby is just speculation. Cards themselves have no inherent future value. And, to your point, when you equate card value to box prices there is no rational reason to buy. To my point, that's not what ppl are doing. They are not being rational. They are betting on a very gimpy race horse, given these disclosed odds, screaming at the track with cheap beer on their breath. This is exactly why I have a channel. To explain the 98% chance to *not* hit Kaprizov. So why is everyone still in the hand, calling all the way down to the river, in a huge pot with king-high? You are so right to do something more worthwhile with your money. Buy a top of the line TV that you'll use every day and still have in ten years. Those who have kids should buy them some nice clothes. As opposed to worthless cards buried in your collection.

Rathbone put up monster numbers in the AHL last season. I would hold on to that card for at least a year. Hopefully he'll turn out way better than Juolevi, drafted 5th OA and a total bust.
@Fultoncards2 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian. I get you. I love smart, talented D like Rathbone or Romanov. My point relates squarely to box prices. Talented D on teams that are rebuilding are not sought by out-of-market collectors. Shea Theodore, Alex Pietrangelo, Zdeno Chara, John Carlson, etc. are some of the best D of their era. Yet, they don't have any material value. I mean, a Brent Burns Young Guns or Future Watch is not even a $50 card, at all-time market highs. But because VAN is a hockey market, ppl will be quick to point out Rathbone's legit upside. I was merely explaining that Oettinger is a $300 card out of the gate, validating the 20/21 SPA box price, not Rathbone. No matter how great Rathbone becomes. Hedman is the best D of the past ten years. His FWA is a $200 card. McDonagh is prob the best stay-at-home during crunch-time of his era. Played in NYC, the center of the universe. No one collects him.

I like SPA, but to get any good autos, I would need to get super lucky or purchase a case. I wish the number of future watch autos was closer to 30 so it would be a bit easier to pull a good rookie auto.
@Fultoncards2 жыл бұрын
Ya I agree in principle, and it would be interesting to know how they come up with their checklists. I think in 19/20 they had 104 FW (auto and base). In 20/21 there are 85. If they were to reduce it to 30, they would have reduced the population of FW from 104K to 30K, since 19/20 (given x999 FW per player). Then they could not guarantee a FWA in each box. Or they would have to vastly reduce the amount of cases in existence. The issue remains the box prices. We would be 100% forgiving of hitting a FWA of "just" a solid D with upside, or semi-star goalie, if boxes were $125 like they used to be. For US $250-$450, we would simply buy our Ilya Sorokin or Josh Norris on eBay, with 100% certainty. Having a 98% chance of *not* hitting Kirill makes it impossible to rationalize breaking a $300 box.

Zero risk my friend. SP Authentic guarantees two hard-signed autos. So if you get shorted, UD will send you replacement auto(s). And, if your box overdelivers, then that's a bonus.
@SilverzeroBreaks2 жыл бұрын
Most boxes don’t even come with 2 FWA anymore, so you’ve done pretty well by landing two!!! Goalie mojo continues haha. Sadly I’m skipping this. It’s not really appetising to lose close to $400usd just for the box break experience. It’s getting too expensive.

I def accept feedback! You're the second person to make this request in 450 videos. I'm really not a fan of extreme closeup videos, like group breakers or monetized mainstream entertainment breakers. I started my career in sports journalism, and the default for the eye is a mid-shot. I pride myself on good framing and saturated, aesthetic composition. However. My primary motive is to lend a sentimental, *heritage-like* look and feel. I also want viewers to focus equally on the *subtitles* which only flash 12-15 secs, or stats I post screen-left. This is very intentional. I expect eyes to be scanning the entire frame, and actively analyzing the "average box" not my own cards. I'm drawing away from the ostentatiousness of fetishizing the cards themselves. It's a story-telling, educational channel about appreciating hobby, players and odds, not card condition, card value, or venerating material objects. If you get me.

How many cards do you damage opening packs so hostile?
@Fultoncards2 жыл бұрын
I believe cards are tactile, to be handled and traded. Especially by children. As they have been for over 110 years. I give almost all my cards away to ppl who share the hobby with me, based on *sentimental* attachment to the game and players. Cards are just cardboard. We won't take them with us when we die. And, we won't take our money either. The best cards, I keep in my family and hand down. I love knowing that relatives will also handle the cards some day, and future generations. I'm the anthesis of pretentious or ostentatious. And, I believe in earning money through my life's work, by contributing to society. My life's work is real and tangible. It has actual meaning, to me and others, as I work in humanitarian affairs. This is why I rarely talk about money, or speculate on card values. Card condition and card value mean zero to me.

Well. They recently changed the settings in YT, so it's more effort and not automatic. I also speak so quickly that YT butchers what I say. And I provide so much info that it would be impossible to transcribe myself. I already spend a ton of time editing and fact-checking. The underlying purpose of my video is not to entertain, but to story-tell and provide odds. The odds and the rundown of what is in the box is in subtitles I manually put on the screen. I might see if I can use the automatic YT captions by reediting them manually. But, it would be an enormous time commitment for a niche channel with 2K views per video. I do not monetize by gambling and entertaining. It's free work. You're my first request for subtitles ever. Even if 5% of the population is hearing impaired, based on the fact the average viewer only watches 5mins of a 15min video, I'm not sure the math makes sense, re. my devoting even more time editing. From the time I shoot a video to the time it is uploaded and shared on social media, often six hours have passed. And it used to be longer. This does not include the time analyzing checklists and crunching math that only a portion of my viewers actually appreciate. Most just want to know card values and see major pulls, to get an endorphin rush. Completely oblivious to what an online breakers budgets for a year on cards, 100% in the red. Those monetized make money via delivering eyeballs to betting sites or other ads, by fostering a culture of adrenaline junkies on brutal sticker prices and odds. So, my priority is only editing in odds.
