The BMW F900XR is the newcomer. It’s an all new bike, derived from the 850GS, but being an XR comes with street manners. It has a parallel-twin engine, a superb riding position and it’s fast without being scary.
Some people say that the small Multistrada 950 is even better than the big one. We got the S version, which comes with all the goodies you might wish for, including the electronic suspension.
In this film our mission is to find out which one is better. The BMW F900XR or the Ducati Multistrada 950S?

I test rode the F900XR back to back with the Multi 950S. My head said the BMW was a safer choice and and easier bike to immediately feel comfortable with, but my heart said the Ducati. I’m now 1500 miles in on the 950S and I am SO happy with it. The ride position, the playfulness, the response, the tech... it’s awesome!! The heat is a non issue, don’t know why it’s mentioned. My bike is purely for fun and touring... sunny days and twisty roads. Maybe it would be different if it was an urban commute, but for what I want, which is boat loads of grins, it’s absolutely perfect! Luggage is fab, passenger ride excellent and as for the suspension options, i love it more than I thought I could!

Hello mate im in the same boat I just been on the 950s and love it, im just worried that maybe the f900xr would be better for sportier riding with the 17 inch front wheel? what do you think?
@lyndonstickley4543

Jamie dyer that was a consideration of mine too, though I’m not a die hard speed freak. The problem with the f900xr for me was that it felt a bit bland. And it seemed to have such a natural default for the centred upright position that I felt like it was trying to return me to upright as I was leaning it. Whereas the 950s just kept wanting to lean more. I’m no biking expert and so don’t have the miles or years to tell you about the 20 bikes I’ve owned... this is my 3rd bike and I got into biking after 25 years driving... however, what I can say is that I now know 2 multistrada 1260 owners (1260s and pikes peak) who have decades of biking experience and now own 950s’ and say that it’s the best bike they’ve ever had - because they can ‘rag everything out of it and have loads of fun.’ Every time I get on mine, it feels like an event. I’m not sure if I’d feel the same about the bmw. In fact I know I wouldn’t. I also rode a mate’s bmw r1250 RS exclusive last week... he raves about it. And you know what? It felt awful compared to mine... quickshifter like a tractor and nowhere near as exciting. Btw I have nothing against BMW’s and to be honest I’m not a fan of Ducati as a brand because I’ve got cars in my blood rather than bikes so I just take each bike on it’s merits rather than pedigree. I was going to test ride the S1000XR as an alternative as the bmw sales guy said that it would be a better comparison, but I decided that I didn’t need or want 160bhp! In summary, the 950S is playful, exciting and super capable. But it is very upright, which is exactly what I wanted. A 17inch wheel would make it more focussed and sporty, but also throws you forward and loses the upright position (like it does with the XR or the 1260S). So, I’d say that position has to play a big part in the decision making, whatever bike you are looking at. I came from a Z900 RS and it had a virtually identical position to the XR. And although both on 17 inch wheels and with a more forward position, I feel that I can be way more aggressive and confident on the 950S (than either of the other two) because it feels more nimble, leans harder and has an unbelievable quickshifter. Hope that helps!! Happy to answer more questions though everything is subjective. 👍🏻

@@lyndonstickley4543 Yeah I feel you. I was following the freelance test rider on the ducati and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life, he was not messing around. I couldnt feel the bike move at all during the ride, the active suspension was amazing at keeping the bike planted. I am beginning to think that the 19inch wheel and the height is part of what makes the 950s so exhilarating. Comparing it to my mums MT07 you can throw the 950s into the corner and get so much lean angle it feels scary where the MT07 eats up every corner so well it makes you want to push it at insane speeds into corners just to try to get it to lean over, plus you can feel every bump and mistake you make, even not being smooth enough braking. The 950s is definitely my dream bike for sure!

@@lyndonstickley4543 you had previously the z900rs.. So let me ask... What's about the abrupt throttle response in on and off fueling? Was it annoying? Sure the 4 cylinder engine had another more smooth character than this L twin brutal force engine on the Italian beauty, but they say that being low geared the Z900 rs is a torque monster lifting the front wheel even in 3rd with a pull of the throttle... Consumption was another issue not to choose a 4 cyl bike.. But Tell us your experience... What you miss more from the Kawa?

AGREE! I'm in melb and while it we have cool winters, the summer is as hot as up north. My 1190 is dangerously hot! Dehydration and heat exhaustion has almost caught me out twice. On 1 occasion it was 38c, I found myself on the log jammed freeway, cars everywhere and my air temp sensor was saying it was 56c! All the heat from the other cars and my bike was slow roasting me! Although any big cc bike would suffer but V twins are stupid hot.

I have a Multi 950 and the heat is not a problem while riding. You can feel it while riding only on hot days when you are stopped on a light or slow traffic. You are sittign on top of a engine. Of course its gonna generate heat. Feels great in the colder days :) . Anyhow nice comparison. +1. Dont be modest, the Ducati handles like a dream.

Heat is certainly not a problem where I live in Scotland. With the Ducati I suggest you need to use the revs and gears more. It's also more fun that way. I used to have R1200GSes before the 950S and while the Ducati has less power and torque, it's so much more fun and the handling is amazing. Not sure on what you mean by the vibrations. Good review.

I ended up choosing the beemer. 6k on it now. Comfort seat and bar risers turn it into a lounge chair. I know you guys made comment on the shifter. Mine works great both ways??? My only real complaint is it's a little slow steering. The wide bars mask it somewhat, but at 29.5° it's lazier than a 2021 Indian Dark horse chief.....😂 The trade off is excellent stability and dirt road steering. 👍

Hello DMR guys. Useful comparison, as is the comments section. Looks like a lot of experienced riders are looking for exactly this package. I suspect any heat issues are now a big deal, with even cool climates getting 40° plus temps. Yes pollution doesn't help. We are 4000 years over due for an ice age, so melting ice caps is pretty normal on the lead up. That's how the oceans are cooled enough for deep freeze down or up to the twenty fifth parallel. Hello Panama! Right? Anyway, one issue for me is the clattery sounding engines. After too many years on carefully serviced Kawasakis, I am very used to silky, smooth sounding and long running bikes. How long? Around a million sport touring km, on a handful of bikes. No don't need the searing power anymore, hence the 950 interest, not the touring dragster 1200s. The Ducati seems about right, except for the black nose and boring, invisible black front fender. Easy fix of course. Happy Trails!

Interesting. I rode the BMW last week, and although it's a solid bike, I wasn't really impressed. The quickshifter sucks, the engine and exhaust sound are not pleasant, it feels quite tame, saddle way to hard and made my ass, back and shoulders hurt after an hour or two. I own the 950s, I got it 2 weeks ago, I live in Lake Havasu City Arizona, it if quite warm here. I am pretty sure that most of the heat on my bike is coming from that catalytic converter. I plan on removing it soon. I had a Husky 701 Enduro before, and it was also a very warm bike on my butt then I ditched the stock exhaust and it was way cooler. Where my bike seems to get very hot, is you ride, then stop for fuel or to eat, where it sits for 10 minutes or more. This really gives a time for that exhaust piece to just cook everything. The complaint about the engine covers is something I notice only after stopping for a bit. Going down the road for even a couple hours it is fine, stop? There it is.

@@David-xg6ws that is a tough question to answer, I really love the bike, and no matter what bike you get, the exhaust to make them pass emission standards for Europe make a ton of heat. For example, my 701 was really bad on my butt and leg, after I got rid of that, I was actually getting cold (up in Utah and other places high elevation)! The bike is just amazing, the only thing is the fuel level indicator doesn't seem to be very accurate, just track your miles even though the computer seems to get mpg correct. Recommend, highly. I still plan on getting rid of the catalytic converter, but we're moving to Wyoming soon, so I am not sure I want to do that now as I probably will need the heat!

@@fs5866 I rode Africa and have raw sounds of all exhausts on my channel, so I really know what i'm saying. I can say that AT exhaust is ok, but no so cool, for me they are all boring now, and that is not an engine problem. Regarding reliability, of cource it is a question of time, and perhaps Honda could be better on long distance like 200k+ km. I had CBR1100XX for five years and about 50k km withiout problems, but 50k km can do all the engines. Only time will tell.

Bikes are there to make fun and for that you need to be relaxed after few hundred kilometres. This 2 bikes are not for me, yesterday I made a one day tour to the Alps and made 600 km in a day on my Suzuki Vstrom 1000 XT. I ride sporty and fast but if engine heat would give me that uncomfortable filling I would go crazy.

I had a sport tourer but wanted more comfort so I changed to a adventure bike. Visibility is also better cos your up higher plus I can confidently go down dirt roads for thousands of kms. Turns out I like a twisty dirt road more than a bitumen road... Each to their own but just cos the are not revolutionary doesn't mean they don't have a place or use. As a city commutator they are a little top heavy for going slow but the added visibility is a major safety factor. I don't think I could ever go back to a standard bike as my only ride. On my 1190 I have done track days and kept up with 600 super sports, 2 week off road trips through the Aus outback and commute through melb daily. I sold my fireblade cos I get as many thrills from my adventure bike.

I would go BMW... the Strada thing is too bulky for what it should be. Also it's kind of empty! I mean look at the gap between the fork and the radiator. Also the gap under the steering bars. Plus somehow it lacks identity. It doesn't feel 'Ducati'. And for its price tag? No! BMW is better.
