Hey Mr Flyer, i bought one of these 2020 bikes a few weeks ago and have done around 3000 miles so far. The bikes great, no question, but of course will never suit everyone. I love the looks and power, its a true sports bike. The power and handling are easily capable of very enthusiastic progress where circumstances allow. I have done 450 mile days on this bike in England and in Europe and find the seat does get better with miles. One word of warning ... with a pillion on the back, the auto preload jacks the rear suspension up and the side stand gets even shorter. I don't think its perfect, but in truth, what is? You pays your money and takes your choice! Enjoy the bike. Great reviews, keep up the good work.

I had a test ride booked on one of these followed by a the R1250GSA, after 70mins of riding I had a numb back side and pins and needles in my hands. The GSA caused me no problems at all. If you are in the market for one of these make sure you get a long test ride to check it out. Another great review 👍👍👍👍

That's sound advice, and not just for motorbikes. Back in the day (and I wasn't there at the time) a school friend overtook in just that scenario. He and his GF were in a car, overtook another car, and a lorry pulled out from the right with the driver looking right. Head-on collision, both friend and GF died at the scene. The aftermath was far-reaching, as you can imagine, and it was a harsh lesson that's been imprinted on my brain ever since. I was 18 at the time, as were they. Don't risk it. But top vid again TMF, I love the sports/adventure nature of this bike, definitely interested.

I'd say it's just good practice to not overtake in or around junctions, nor in residential areas (usually you'd have a 30mph limit there too).

As usual, i loved the video 👍 Just 3 weeks ago i've tested this bike. As a long term owner of Honda CB1300S, i wondered how Germans built in-line 4 engine, which is japanese speciality. Well, not to good... My 2008 Honda engine is much smoother. Vibrations were one of the main 3 reasons i finished the test ride after just 40 mins. My bottom and right hand were devastated by buzzing. The amount of power is cery descent, but power is not everything. Another thing, the seat. Really exclusive as it should be in a premium bike. BMW, to give the customer a premium feeling, made the seat of a 100yrs old oak wood. Touring on it? If 0,5 an hour is "touring", fine. More than this would be a torture. 3 thing i didn't like is the chassis. Although it is top, it does not follow the engine's performance. Good things: breaks, sound, beauty and looking expensive. It is not a great sports bike, not a touring bike becsuse of lack of comfort...I have no idea why would i buy it.

A Beemerphile buddy of mine bought an XR, rode it for less than 1000 kilometers, hated it and sold it before I could even twist its throttle. Thing is, among other BMW’s, he rides a fully appointed S1000RR (his second) - which he loves. Go figure! The cautionary tale here is that the XR may be an acquired taste, even for Beemerphiles. Perhaps more of a niche bike than a nice bike?

Hard to argue with that. I ride a Triumph, but here in America I'd certainly find parts and service easier to find if I rode one of the 4 big Asian bikes. Plus, every Kawasaki I've ever owned was incredibly dependable. Having said that, my T120 has been flawless so far, but I just don't have that feeling of confidence and reliability that the Japanese bikes give.

Got rid of my 2017 XR after two years, couldn’t stand the buzz which got worse by the mile and useless heated grips. For a 2020 updated bike at the price they now are, shame on BMW for not resolving the buzz issue. If Japanese bike manufacturers can produce a super smooth inline 4 then they get my business. Japanese bikes are easier to maintain, more reliable and cheaper to both buy and service. As an older rider, now 70, I look for different values when assessing a new bike purchase. BMW do however produce well designed comfortable bikes in some of their range and no one bike fits all riders. That’s what the free market is all about. Good review👍

Well, I've got a 29 leg and can't, in any way, get my feet down. I can tiptoe one side, but if I stopped on a slope or put my foot in a pothole (which has had me off in the past) I'd be straight on the deck. I was amazed when I first sat on the XR how high and awkward the bike was. I found the GS lower and easier, and that's saying something!

Rob BikeBob hi pal, the only thing I thought was that the seat on the xr is a bit bucket-like once your in it there’s very little opportunity to move around, the Gs has a very much slimmer profile to the front of the seat, this is something that bmw addressed with the intro of the water cooled bikes, and I agree the Gs is easier if leg length plays a part... and tbf a Gs is hard to best as an altound Swiss Army knife sort a bike... 👍

Another great review. Thanks. I had the mark 1 version but sold it as the suspension was too hard even though it had the electronic suspension and I had the BMW comfort seat. I've tried loads of other bikes in the meantime but none created such a buzz to ride or felt so safe to ride ie brakes and cornering. Bearing in mind you have a G S I'll be interested to learn how you get on with the hard seat and stiff suspension.

The last generation was vicious-fast, with a rock-solid chassis that lent it immediately intuitive handling. But those vibes were an instant deal killer in my mind. That BMW engineering had another chance at this model and didn't eliminate that serious failing is incomprehensible, and borderline negligence. At least it checks the box with that strange insectoid front that ADV riders apparently adore.
@TheMissendenFlyer

Well lots of reviews I've seen since I made this said that the vibes were cured, so maybe I'm super sensitive. They are definitely much improved and no longer a deal breaker in my opinion, but at certain rev/speed combinations, they are there....not as smooth as I'd like a 4 cylinder to be....

Nice looking machine but I do question the vulnerability of the lower oil cooler. As a BMW owner I can understand people being highly critical of the separate SAT NAV arrangement especially now with the introduction of these TFT instrument clusters. However once I learned how to use Garmin Basecamp to plan my routes I have a totally new appreciation for this configuration. The ability to remove the unit and program it off the bike while traveling is awesome! No one does GPS better than Garmin in my opinion, don’t believe me troll the Honda Goldwing sites. Many aren’t thrilled with the integrated NAV unit.

Having test ridden it three times, found it difficult to ride in town and didn't cope well with the uneven road surface in the south east (knocked off line a lot by defects in the road in bends), it's like being on a buzzing bumblebee, PCP is making BMW bike's prices stratospheric! I bought a new Triumph Tiger 900 instead (they also offered a £1000 more for my BMW part ex), just more useable real day power, comfortable and doesn't feel like it takes three people to get off it's side stand! Sadly I also think someone would steal a XR fairly quickly, being within the M25 some days.
@hollowaysteve
@hollowaysteve 4 жыл бұрын
PCP is the biggest legal racket for generations, and as you rightly point out is the reason for vastly inflated prices, giving manufacturers the perfect opportunity to overcharge. It’s basically profiteering.

@hollowaysteve
@hollowaysteve 4 жыл бұрын
manwithnoname65 Yes. But it’s more than the difference in cost and the way the finance works. PCP has allowed manufacturers to artificially increase prices across the board. The whole system is a ‘win win’ for them and the story is far bigger than just finance.
@richardbrooks4549
@richardbrooks4549 4 жыл бұрын
Chris ODwyer Surely comparing the Tiger 900 with the BMW 1000 is not a fair comparison. The 900XR is similar in price to the Tiger and cheaper on PCP!
@triumphtiger
@triumphtiger 4 жыл бұрын
@@richardbrooks4549 I was only trying to make a point about useable power and the state of roads we ride (wasn't comparing bikes) , PCP is a way BMW can lock you in and "Servitization" is also the future for these manufacturers. I do think trying to avoid massive depreciation is a big issue with very expensive bike's and cars, maybe contract hire? I had K1600GT it's depreciation was eye watering!

Having a separate, removable GPS is GOOD!!! Being a Garmin based unit, it it fully compatible with Garmin Basecamp software. People who go for long tours create routes in Basecamp on their computer. Then they detach the GPS from the bike, bring it inside, connect to the computer, and upload the tour route. It's actually a very slick and seamless method to get complicated long tour routes into the GPS unit.

Great job on the video TMF. I think i would prefer the 900 XR , its lighter and more manageable, there was a lot of grunting when you picked it up off the side stand on the turning circle check. It will probably sell well. BMW has a great range of bikes at the moment. Cheers.

Be nice to see a review of this and the R1250GS. Split video Andy to test your editing skils. I think many GS owners have considered the XR at some point and it would be good to hear your views. I wonder how close the usable performance is now that the GS has even more torque.

Great first ride, look forward to the bigger picture. First impression is that without the BMW roundel it might not be a BMW. If the seat, the short sidestand, Satnav screen and other issues were perfect I would pay the premium price, but really BMW you must up your game to retain the reputation. I agree with the comparisons with a GS. Would I soon regret buying this bike and wishing I had rather saved for the thoroughbred 1250GS? Mrs Flyer's views eagerly awaited.

As always TMF, good honest opinion, I have a 2018 model, agree at motorway speeds it is very viby, "best to go above motorway speeds then!", I love the riding position, and performance, mine seems to handle better two up, and you can certainly throw it into the bends, I've put a 'foot on my side stand so it stands more upright, you need a mortgage to buy the BMW luggage though, use the quickshifter and it flies, agree it's more for sports bike riders who want a more comfortable riding position.

Not a fan of the "adventure" styling of the new sports tourers, I really don't need the ground clearance, but the BMW seems like a very competent bit of kit. I habitually walk bikes around while seated on them when parking though, and I can just see how I'd bark my shins or the back of my ankle with that peg position (not that this bike's alone in that).

I understand what your saying, I would put this bike in the sport touring segment of the market. BMW puts this in their Adventure lineup. The R1250 RT is the true sport touring in their lineup.

Excellent review as always. I took one out last week and had exactly the same thoughts bit buzzy in 6th at 4000rpm felt strange like it needed another gear which it obviously doesn’t, if you ride through it you don’t notice it as much but then your 70+ apparently it’s a consequence of the dreaded Euro 4. Totally agree with seat comfort or lack of it, Wunderlich may come out with a replacement or Viking Motorcycle Seats Sevenoaks can customise. I couldn’t really fault it apart from that. Retail £16795 dealer would do £16000 otr. Extras personally I would just need luggage and integrated sat nav. I’m trying to find one bike that does 4 bikes job and px ing the lot, I think this is as close as I have found that ticks all the boxes. Be really interested to see pillion video as the Mrs needs to be comfy and the gel seat on my Tiger is faultless.

great review , and a fine looking bike. The sat nav is in two parts so they can sell you the second one as an option , or thats certainly the way it looks to me. But ill bet its an easy bike to live with , look forwards to your thoughts a few weeks down the line , but by then its winter and this will be last years model in january , so I wonder what next years version has in store, this has been such an odd year in so many ways.

Test rode this a couple of weeks ago while my Speed RS had new tires installed.Did not think I would like it as I am a naked bike fanboy. However, I thought the XR was absolutely amazing! Rides great, the weather protection is almost perfect (screen just an inch or so too low for me to be in complete calmness, but that's and easy fix. It goes like I don't even know while being super comfy ....and I think this will be very expensive when the 2021 version in hp- (or is is it M now?) color scheme. I want one. Badly.

My son has the 2018 S100XR, and I feel it's way too busy at speed. I'm always looking for a 7th gear! We'll probably change sprockets this year to make the gearing taller. Fuel consumption and consequently range is less than desired, although not as bad as some. The 2020 model adds TPMS which is a very welcome addition, curiously absent from the previous years. Comfort and ergos are great - but the buzz through the bars cannot be completely tamed even with weightier bar-ends. This becomes an annoyance on longer trips. Good to see the lareger screen on the 2020 - my son has the MRA which is similar in style.

Horses for courses and I’m not expecting you to like this steed Mr Flyer (you’ve never liked the old one). I’ve done 13k miles on my XR and, although it has some faults, I love it. The vibes have never been an issue. Maybe I’m weird but I quite like a bike engine to make its presence felt, possibly because it reminds me of the 80’s and 90’s Kawasaki’s I owned in my youth. I borrowed a 1250 GS for a week recently as the XR had some warranty work done. No argument that the GS was an excellent bike in every way (except the seat which doesn’t suit my ass so I found it far less comfortable than the XR after 3 hours). My real issue is that the GS, in my highly personal opinion, was so unbearably dull compared to the XR. I may grow up one day but, with my 57th looming in two weeks, I still don’t want to give up that “angry” machine that floats the front wheel in third without even trying (thank you, boffins, for modern electronics..!).

Why is it that some inline fours are smooth, and some have excessive (handlebar) vibration? Engine counter-balancers, rubber handlebar or engine mounts? I would have thought a BMW would be one of the smooth ones, with its premium price and reputation.

Both have necessities I need for touring: Upright seating position Wind screen Hard cases luggage capacity Safety electronics like corner abs and traction control The rest of the electronic are nice but not necessary I very much like the position of the satnav (bmw satnavs are from Garmin)

Love your channel , its good enough for skytv along the lines of Henry Coles shows. I have the previous model and tested the 2020 version and to summarise, it’s a great bike but somehow lacks the excitement/urgency of the previous model which I think is down to 2 changes. Firstly they have made it quieter and it does not have the induction roar of the previous bike and secondly, they have changed the gearing in 4/5/6 . Done 30K on my current XR so the new XR is likely to be my next bike in 6-12 months when hopefully there are some used low miles bikes for sale. Lastly, BMW customer service is superb and another reason why I wont be changing brands

At 9:01 the bike looks almost identical to a Multistrada. I worry about Ducati reliability but neither my 2016 GS or 2018 has been reliable. 2018 has some serious valve noise I'll try to get resolved this week. I'd buy the Mutli 1260 today and just take my chances. Can't be any worse than my BMW's have been.
