Something you may consider adding is a plug for a trickle charger , that way you can leave the battery inside the kayak while you charge it when you get home.

Hey bro, I have my Tempest 120 PDL. But I purchased the hybird edition. #1 Hoodoo makes a factory 46 lb thrust trolling motor, that sits where the pdl would, and weighs 18 lbs. #2 I knew I was going to run the bixpy J2, on my toe control, drop down rudder system. I DIY'D my battery box, for my 12V cabela's battery, FF, and GO-PRO, and other charging accessories. I purchased a 30 cal ammo box, that identical charger panel from ebay. My cockpit and front storage hatch, and actually my hull, deck, rudder system is exactly the same the vibe's. This is my 1st kayak, and see no reason to upgrade. I was going in that exact spot, but cringed at drilling those 3 holes, in my new boat, lol. Great job. Love watching your DIY'S your just like me. Gotta be perfect. Haven't had any issues. 🙏 🎣

Great vid. One point of note: It's always a good idea to make that hot lead go to the covered half of the plug so If I were you I would have used the other half of the extension cable on the battery. That way when you are moving stuff around or anything, you don't have a live end exposed.Just thought. It's nice that Kayaks are plastic so there's not as much concern, but you never know when and where that thing rubs against earth ground.

Hey man, fyi. Uni bits (step bits) are great for drilling plastic. They leave a very clean edge. The harbor frieght 3 pack is actually pretty good too. I’ve drilled 1/2” plate steel with the largest one in the pack and it still cuts fine. I enjoy the videos. 👍

A little plumbers pro tip for this silicone step @16:40 Once you let the silicone squeeze out, before you touch it, spray some soapy water all over it, then you can trowel it out perfectly without it smearing and sticking to anything it wasn’t touching before you sprayed it. If you haven’t tried this, you’ll thank me.

Instead of crimp connectors they make low temp solder shrink connectors, they have adhesive in them as well which will aid in waterproofing. Just a suggestion though if the crimps are working for you then no need to change

After watching a few of your videos, I've finally figured how I'm gonna rig my OK Trident 15. So thank you for that! I ordered about $800 worth of stuff. I was initially going to use a RayMarine Dragonfly 4 pro, but my scupper transducer mold is molded for a regular one. I plan to mount a 22AH battery in the front hatch, using the same connection method as you. One connector is going to a 5 gang toggle switch panel that will run my 3 navigation lights on one switch, my red interior lights on one switch, and my under the kayak green light for bait fish on one switch. The other two switches will be for on down the road. I'll hard wire my fish finder to another sae connector and leave the other two for later. The two flush rod holders I have behind the seat will be fitted with 1 1/4 PVC pipe and with a 2x6, I'll add a 30 lb thrust trolling motor with rod holders integrated on the space between the flush mounts. So thank you for giving me some ideas. Also, your Amazon link for the RAM track mount that fits the hook2 is a dead link.

I used a 12 volt solar panel from Bass Pro to keep my deer feeder charged and another one in the deer blind to keep a charge on the 12 volt battery being used for the lighting, USB ports and other 12 volt accessories in the deer blind. This solar panel was mounted on top of a PVC tube with mounting hardware, like flagpole mounts. Worked great. Just an idea for you to help keep charge on 12 v battery that way there is no need to remove the battery when charging. There are a lot of videos on KZbin doing Solar Charging for Kayaks, Canoes and Rafts. There are many types of panels, systems to choose from. Check into installing a 12 volt solar panel for use on your kayak.

You can get your holes to line up easier if you just go ahead and mount the plate, and then use a hole saw instead of a paddle bit. Just start slow, and you can adjust the position of the arbor bit on the hole saw. You'll get a perfect hole every time.

Great Vid well done!! To take picky 1 more step. I saw something I would do different, as a former electrician. The wires hanging out of your battery dry box "could" short on something since the hot wire is the exposed term of the connector. Now there is a conflict with my comment due to the color of wire used by the manufacturer of the connector. Obviously not your error. When using a connector which has only one way to plug together the color used is kinda a non issue since the color is not used to do the final plugin. As long as the color reversal for that specific connector is maintained all will be good.

Installed mine today. I didn't use the rectangle bracket as that left a bit more room for my thru-hull wiring grommet for my transducer cable. Built my battery box the same way but with some of the extra cautions provided in these comments (extra shrink tape, for example, real marine silicone and dielectric grease). I haven't installed the pass through to take the power and transducer cable to the fish finder yet as I am not sure exactly where I want the finder located on my track system. I only want to drill 1 more hole. LOL.

Good work and good job Sir. The only flaw I can see with that panel (excepting the ommision of an inline fuse) is the fact that those damn panel lights will put a constant draw upon the battery. Leave It hooked for a night or two, and the battery will be depleted ( this is a pragmatic observation, not a critique of the method and mode of installation, which is excellently expedited). Kind regards.

Be advised that the gasket on those “cheap” waterproof box will decay within a few years or less due to heat and UV. The material (white gasket) goes liquid and very sticky, makes a mess.

Good video. Shows me where I can use up less space than I’m using now. I also installed a voltage regulator on my power system to insure stable power. I’ve got a lot of different items using power. Also, I installed a power switch and indicator for each unit using power. I don’t have a panel to mount my power outlet to, but I’m sure with some Fiberglas I’ll get it done.

I hate to say it, but the Positive junction from the Battery should ALWAYS be protected from touching anything. (Like on an automobile, where it doesn't matter if the Ground wires touches anything else that's Grounded). Just a little "Hint", for future reference.

M. Smith Now that you've built this drybox system... is there anything that you would've done different to make it better? Mikisa

I didn't make my box that way, but his is just as good...! Always keep the Power (Positive) contact insulated from everything else.

I agree with the positive post comment. One more thing to add.... I am going to be building same exact setup but will be adding my fuse right off positive terminal before exiting dry box. Any thoughts why this wouldn't be effective at protecting all accessories without the need for multiple inline fuses?

Having a fuse holder (and fuse, of course!) directly off the Positive side of the Battery should be good for all your needs, but maybe NOT for any specific electrified item. Maybe your Fish Finder uses 3 amps of current, but your boat lights require 5 amps. If you run them both, that makes a total of 8 amps! Neither your fishfinder nor your lights are protected, should something happen. A good weatherproof fuse holder, coming off the battery should have a maximum total of ALL your electronics, but I think it would be wise to have a separate inline fuse for your most Precious (the fishfinder) just in case. Think about how vehicles are wired, and you can't go wrong. (Each electrical item has its OWN fuse, just in case! Also, match your loads with the proper wire gauge. Small wires pulling big loads, means voltage loss due to resistance! Make sense? Hope this helps, my Friend... (Things to "Ponder"...Hobie electrical fittings are not totally "waterproof", but have good water resistance, and 5-Minute Epoxy is NOT waterproof, at all...!)

I have put an inline waterproof for each of the lines to the battery. I only have 2 so far, fishfinder(3a) and the power outlet(5a) listed in this video. 2 more open ends using the splitter in this video for lights later on. Also ordered a $10 attachment for my genius g7200 charger that will let me connect directly to the SAE plug to charge the battery. Don't even have to open the box! I am sealing the electrical fittings with silicone. All my connections have heat shrink over them. Looks good so far, time will tell though. Thanks for the video and links.

Kayak USA, Thanks for such a great tutorial! If you decide to do it let me know. I'll be your first customer. It's cheaper buying stuff in bulk... and I don't have a shop, wire connectors, shrink wrap or anything so I'd be happy buying it ready to go! I'd just have to drill the holes and plug things up. Easy enough lol.
