The big questions to me are: does the new 3.8L have cylinder deactivation? And does the new engine have plasma welded cylinder walls or does it have tried and true cast iron cylinder liners. This will be the decisive factors for me in buying the new 2021 Nissan Frontier. I don't want either tech in my vehicles. Cylinder deactivation causes oil burning leading to eventual rebuilds of engines, and its same for plasma welded cylinder liners, they don't hold up. Oil burning again.

Looking forward to seeing the new 2021 Frontier, and 2022 Nismo Offroad truck, have questions about reliability of DI only injection without port injection, will the valves carbon up? Or has Nissan done something to keep valves from carboning? Toyota uses port/di injection with electronics to keep valves clean. I have a 2018 Pro-4X and I am pleased with it. I tow a 21 foot center console fishing boat for a few miles several times a week and the 4.0 L has all of the grunt necessary to get the job done. I do wish that I had bought the king cab as I would prefer to have the longer bed and I don't have a need, or desire, to have several passengers in the truck. After having owned 2 Frontiers, a previous generation Ranger, and two Tacomas, I will probably stick with Nissan when I make my next purchase as long as the new drive train is as reliable as the current drivetrain.
