Hi Dan. Great presentation on Mazda Miata suspension system. Appreciate you distinguishing front double-wish bone versus rear multi(5)-link. I cannot not say if I really understood everything you said but I gave it the old college try. So are there advantages to having front double-wish bone and rear multi-link. Why not double-wish everywhere or multi-link everywhere or front multi-link with rear double-wish bone? You did mention that multi-link rear allows the rear outer wheels to compensate for further travel during turns by maintaining even contact with the flat roadway. Is that correct? What about the inner wheels in a high speed, aggressive turn? Will the rear multi-link system allow the rear wheels stay in contact with the roadway also? Again, wonderful explanation. I hope I understood you correctly.

Great video Dan! I have a 2019 RF Club model myself, which I enjoy driving daily. It’s a great handling little car on the street. It does allow quite a bit of roll, but I think that adds to the fun factor. I find that cars that are too grippy and stiff are not as enjoyable to toss around on the street without driving like a complete hooligan. I am lucky to have a ‘99 Miata track car for that type of fun! This video brings me back to the days of your write ups on Inside Line! Keep them coming!

Thanks. And I agree 100%. In addition to outstanding balance, this car has approachable limits that you can really feel and enjoy. @DanEdmunds4 жыл бұрын
Having raced a bone-stock NA (and other showroom stock cars) with super-sticky 80 treadwear quasi-slick tires, body lean doesn't bother me. The real world isn't a billiard table, and lean - so long as it's controlled, balanced and well-damped - only helps the driver feel what the car is doing.

Thanks for good content. One query if I may. For track use, what's your opinion on the value of a front one-piece aftermarket strut tower brace? (I track a 2020 MX-5 RF 2.0 ND2 with Öhlins Road & Track suspension and Karcept's sway bars both front and rear. I'm considering removing the front strut tower brace in order to shred some weight).
@DanEdmunds3 жыл бұрын
I used to race street-based cars, and I built my own strut tower brace (three piece, with a removable turnbuckle crossbar) for my VW Golf. It helped the car noticeably, because vertical loads push up and in when cornering, and the engine compartment is a big open hole that can flex. It also saved my butt one race, where the strut tower spot welds failed (too much load, high spring and damper forces, old car body, rules didn't allow supplemental welding) because it kept the strut tower from fully collapsing. It does depend on the car and the stiffness of the structure. Mine was a MacPherson strut Golf, but the MX5 spring and shock loads do go straight into the body in the same way, and I think the benefit is more than worth the weight -- especially on a track car that will see higher sustained cornering loads, not to mention your stiffer springs and dampers. I never put one on the MX-5 I used to race, but that's only because the Showroom Stock rules wouldn't allow it. Keep it.

Curious about your thoughts on the Bilsteins included with the Club/GTS. I just bought a 19' RF GT and have seen the Bilsteins for sale as new-take-offs, but haven't heard glowing reviews of their ride quality on the street.
@DanEdmunds3 жыл бұрын
I'm generally positive about factory-tuned suspension bits, and in this case the Bilsteins ARE factory tuned in a joint effort between Mazda and Bilstein expressly for this car. That said, it is a Sport/Club, so they do prioritize control over comfort to a certain degree. As I understand it, Bilsteins aren't spec'd on a MX5 with an automatic, because those shocks are designed to work with extra bolt-on chassis bracing that does not fit if an automatic is present -- because the auto transmission's case hangs down more. Point is, if you fit Bilsteins and don't have the chassis bracing under the transmission, you might not get the same results as the full factory setup. Still, the aftermarket tends to be more one-sided -- especially if ride is what you're after. Pure aftermarket setups are usually stiffer because they assume you care more about performance than ride.

So, if the front wheel is located by the upper and lower control arms, and the bottom of the shock is on a pivot, what does the "strut brace" really do? I know how strut braces work on MacPherson strut suspensions, but there the strut is used to help locate the front wheel, and isn't pivoted at the knuckle. Is the "strut brace" cosmetic? I put it in quotes because there is no strut to brace on an ND MX-5.
@DanEdmunds3 жыл бұрын
In a front-driver with struts, it's not just about holding the sturt in position. It is that, but it is also about spring and shock loads that come up into the shock towers. That still happens here, and you want that point to be rigid so the spring and shock have a fixed point to react against. But the engine bay is in between. Best way to add stiffness so the upper spring/shock mounting point doesn't move is to add a tower brace -- strut brace being habit, but not technically correct here. I used to race a VW Rabbit with stiff suspension. Built a stress bar of my one to brace the towers. At one point during a race, the spot welds holding the tower to the inner fender failed, opening up a one-inch gap. Maybe when I hit a curb, maybe from high loading in a long banked-turn the track had. I didn't know this at the time (specifically, but it felt weird, but this was a sprint race -- not use pitting) but when I got done I could see that the stress bar spanning the engine bay was the only thing that kept it together, that kept the wheel from going up into the fender. The vertical stresses of spring/shock loads are not kidding, and they're still present here. (and since the towers lean toward each other, even in the MX-5, the loads aren't pure vertical -- there's a lateral load across the engine bay, too.) Keeping that upper point stable makes the shocks more predictable when it comes to shock tuning. Any point with give makes it hard to get the suspension to behave.

Was wondering what your thoughts on lowering springs were.. On. the ND MX 5 RF.
@SuspensionTruth4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brad, you didn't ask me, but I made this video on the topic - 'What lowerings springs should I get?' kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmTKq36egr2Mq7c A key question I'd ask of the spring vendor is: what are the expected ride frequencies (not just spring rates)? This is because 'Flat Ride' is essential to maintain, including on racing setups. Most factory cars are tuned where the rear suspension frequency is higher than the front. What is 'Flat Ride' and why should you care? kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIOTiGOOrt2BlbM This behavior lets the rear 'catch up' to the front which always sees undulations before the rear. It' common for a lot of aftermarket suspension to NOT be tuned for Flat Ride, where the front spring is much stiffer proportionately. This can make the car 'porpoise' and is NOT good for grip or ride quality. 3 Keys to Ride Harmony kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYuaZYCImt-Xgs0

I have the goodwin mid pipe for my 2016 GT. The mid pipe comes in very slight contact with the X frame support under the car. At cold start up and at traffic lights it produces an annoying vibration from the two metals. Could I remove the X and stiffen up the car somewhere else? I'm surprised that Goodwin's part doesn't clear. It's not like the X-brace is unknown to them - or uncommon. Have you asked them about it? I'm not familiar with that specific part. But I'm not sure I'd remove the brace. If the pipe contact is light, and I'm assuming it is since it only happens in certain circumstances, I might see if there's an easy way to shim the brace away from the body slightly with thin washers under all of its bolts. But I'm not looking at the car while I'm saying this.

I'm experiencing a weird handling problem, and I've gotten the car fully aligned to mazda spec and its still behaving badly (laser 4 wheel alignment, no mods to car, original tyres with 10k miles). When I accelerate, the car will lift at the front, and then grip to the right, sharply. I then have to fight it to stay straight and then it gradually comes back to feeling normal. But that right to left motion thats sharp, upon applying gas, is quite off putting, and I'm thinking something isn't right. Surely that can't be normal?

@@DanEdmunds Noooo, that's sad because one of the reasons why I wanted to get a Miata was because of the Bilstein shocks.Thank you for your source though.

Hi Dan, as always thank you for your detailed analyses and break-down. I often search for your walkarounds when developing suspensions on different vehicles. Do you know if Mazda asked Bilstein to reduce the gas pressure on the newer version of the Club dampers? I noted the very high (much higher than previous NA, NB, or NC) gas force levels which cause more 'skitter' with the 2016 ND w/ Club package. This was pointed out to me by SCCA National Champion Deana Kelley. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hafPYmCrdq6tnM0

@@DanEdmunds Would be interesting to know. Great car, but too much nitrogen charge adds unnecessary jerk.

@@bobreno4042 yes, the NC had the same design as well, double wishbone in the front and 5 links in the back. Probably the best mechanical suspension setup in the world.

I have done the Supra in words/photos. Look for that on Autoblog. I didn't have my video act together when that one came through.
