@123andme The biggest issue is lack of maintenance. Fluid change and service every 30k-40k miles and it'll go 200k+ easily. Most early transmission (cvt or otherwise) wasn't the mechanicals as much as it was the end of the fluid life cycles -- in turn takes out the mechanicals.

What's crazy is the average new car price in the US is now $40,000! I've actually been eyeing the base S manual Versas (if cheap enough) as an extra vehicle (next to my '18 RCSB 2wd F150.. not the most practical). I need to test fit one as I am a big guy (6ft 5, 300 lbs). I miss shifting gears in a car you could flog and still not be speeding (In started driving in the 80s with 75 hp 80's imports).

Harrison well it’s like you designed them so they could stay at a set RPM all the time for power and efficiency purposes. Yet now in practice you don’t want them to do that. It really is a situation where auto journalists screwed the industry into thinking it’s a problem (not savagegeese he criticizes CVTs fairly,) who cares what a Nissan Versa’s or a Subaru Ascent’s shifts feel like. If anything people will grow to prefer no shifts.

I did NOT...see that coming! A positive glowing review of the (formally) dull, boring Versa! Good for Nissan for pressing foreword on their commitment to develope the Versa. Such a thoughtful shining review from "Savage Geese" is a clear testimony to that fact. While the domestic manufacturers bail on good smaller affordable cars, (something that they were never consistently good at anyway) It's good to see another major manufacturer Expanding choices here in the US, regarding truly good affordable cars.... and with Manual transmissions available. Why they can't manage to make the manual gearbox available at all levels is beyond logical reasoning, but that being said... Kia/Hyundai, and now Nissan.... Maybe the world is getting better after all! Thanks SG, yours is the best car show on any airwave!

It's not a matter that they can't manage to have the manual on all the trim levels... people won't buy them. And thats the nail in the coffin for manuals, everyone cries for one, but no one shows up to the lots to buy them. I feel like the people that push for manuals are guys that are gung-ho about manuals but share a car with their wives who doesn't want to or won't be able to drive it or people that are simply not the target audience of such vehicles and pretty much their opinion doesn't matter in regards to what that model offers.
@hamsterama
@hamsterama 4 жыл бұрын
Toyota at least did the right thing and included a manual on the second highest trim for the Corolla sedan, and both trims for the hatchback. They didn't put a manual on the poverty spec. Even though I don't know how to drive a manual, I went ahead had a dealership order a hatchback for me. My mom will teach me how to drive it. I was never really interested in learning a manual, until Toyota came out with the iMT in the current generation. The iMT is a total game-changer, because unlike a "primitive" manual, this new one makes learning to drive stick much easier.

I'm fortunate to be able to say I have never purchased a car brand new that did not have a manual gearbox. My 2012, 126,000 mile, wearing and running like a top (radio shit the bed 6k ago. Aftermarket to the rescue with factory fit replacement $129 installed), and a hoot to drive at its limit... Kia soul, might be my last new car. I can't stand the lack of control and involvement that comes with any form of automated gearbox. And manuals, used properly... never break. Three pedals or no go!
@showbiz3848
@showbiz3848 4 жыл бұрын
At least make the manual available as a special factory order when it's already a stop on the assembly line. Btw....my sons purchased his first brand new car recently....and would not sacrifice having a manual gearbox. He made the best choice of what's available in the US. I raised him right. Never give up control.
@hamsterama
@hamsterama 4 жыл бұрын
@@showbiz3848 I'm amused when I go online and see people whining about manuals not being widely available, and at then these same people mock those buying new cars, saying it's a waste of money. Um, sure. If you want manuals to be around, you gotta create demand for them. That's one reason why I chose to buy a new Corolla, instead of a cheap beater. I just wanted to show Toyota my appreciation that they created a manual gearbox with learners in mind. And I'm showing that appreciation by buying a new car from them. Anyway, good for you for raising your sons right!

Dude, I subbed yesterday and today you upload this about a Nissan Versa. I drove a Versa literally last week as a rental. My model had pretty much nothing, not even Bluetooth audio on the radio. I tried to use it as little as possible since it didn't seem very safe for my kids. After watching the review... I had the base, very base version. Engine was struggling after 110kmph. Manual transmission wasn't very good. The trunk is big but the way it tapers off towards the back makes it very difficult to get 2 big pieces of luggage in. Can confirm the ride is firmer than I would expect for a car like this. Overall I think other cars in the same range are probably better.

There are two kinds of people who will buy this car. Those who are on a budget and need a car with a warranty that will last as long as the payments. The second group are those who have woken up and realized that a vehicle is just transportation and if you you need your vehicle to massage your ego or impress your neighbors you have bigger issues that will not be solved at a new car dealer. Buy the Versa and put the remaining money into therapy. You will come out a a better (and probably richer) person.

The CVT shift nature is based on how you depress the accelerator peddle. Barely press it or completely floor it it acts like a CVT normal but with a mid range press it will shift like an automatic, being familiar to the traditional autos in noise.

Not everyone has $30k+ for a new car and the sad thing is most people don't realize they fall into the "don't" category. I see so many people driving $50k pickup trucks and spending $900/month after car payments, insurance and fuel costs for something that at best will lose 15% of it's value. These lower cost cars should be the norm but unfortunately American's like living about their means. Thanks for the review, it's nice to see a review on something that isn't a $80k luxury sedan once in a while.

I have really come to value your reviews. You are one of the few journalists that puts expectations at the proper point for the vehicle at hand. At get a good review because you don't compare the ride, handling, or NVH of the this Versa to a BMW but to other vehicles at it's price point and class. I bought my son the prior gen Versa sedan and it has been a great little car averaging 37.5 mpg in mostly city driving. This Versa seems like a huge improvement. I can afford pretty much anything within reason, but there is a lot to be said for this car. Now in my 60's, I learned the hard way about expensive high performance vehicles. I don't drive fast anymore and I just want to be safe with a lot of feature content for the dollar. I think the Versa delivers on VALUE. This is metric most buyers overlook. Also I just don't give a shit about impressing anyone anymore. If we drove more cars like this instead of huge pickups and SUV's for status we wouldn't be paying $5 a gallon for gas people.

I don't know if it was intentional but when you mentioned the infotainment is quick, it was during a lot of bad stuttering going on when scrolling between screens. The sort of stuff that I truly resent that manufacturers ever approve. It's like 2010 Android devices all over again. Love the value otherwise. Pricing changes the perception of a product's value before and after purchase. Modern affordable small cars nail the principle very well. Expect less, get more.

It's important to review cars like this. All the "premium" BS other car companies sell you are more often being found in cars like this. It can help you gauge just how "premium" the features you're paying $1000+ for, really are. And if the value is ACTUALLY there as opposed to listening to the guy at the dealership being payed to tell you the value is there. And not for nothing, I'm really considering a beater more and more by the day. And if I got one it'd be new, simply because I don't trust the average American when it comes to car maintenance enough to get a discount on a hand-me-down. I'd rather pay more up front than learn the hard way my trans is fucked because downshift Daryl nailed every red light that looked at him sideways.

I have the blue SV model. so here are a couple tips. For the S button, yes it just ups the rpms a bit BUT, when using cruse control the car doesn't limit your speed when going down hill. So you can turn on S mode with cruse control and it will help control the speed when going down hill nicely, it's like an automatic gear down to slow you down. The worst thing about this car that no one has yet to mention is the auto power off mode. When sitting with just the radio on the car will shut off all power with no warning at all. There is a 10 min timer in aux mode that I haven't figured out how to change or cut off yet. Designed to save the battery I'm sure but would be nice to be able to change the timer on it. The car has a super tight turn radius also. At night if there are dark rain spots on the ground the back up sensor will sometimes get a little confused thinking it needs to slam on the brakes to stop you from hitting something that's not really there. Also none of the car's sensors seem to work under about 33 degrees F until they have warmed up.

I just bought a Versa SV in scarlet red. I love the car. I went from a 2006 Prius to this 2020 Versa. The Versa has more bells and whistles in it than the Prius, and I paid near ten thousand more for the Prius. The price of the Versa was just great for what you get. I'd rather save my money for my motorcycles. Just the opinion of an old guy lol.

I rented one over Thanksgiving when I visited family. When I got to the airport, I joked with the rental car agent "I hope I don't get another Nissan Versa!" And, of course, that was the only subcompact car they still had available. But, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was the new 2020 model. Looks-wise, a big improvement over the previous one. I agree that the transmission is the worst part about it. The one I rented, strangely for a new car, was sometimes hard to shift into reverse when I started it in the morning and would go in with a "clunk" when it did. Also, a bit of the rear window seal started coming off and I had to push it back in a couple of times. It seems like every modern Nissan I have been in has issues with the window or door trim getting loose and coming off.

I can't get past the anemic engine, or the CVT either, even for the lower price point. Nissan needs to invest for some new engines. The Versa could be much better with a 3 cyl turbo with some torque down low.

Start out somewhere?? This is going to be for anyone needing a car and realizing just how screwed they are after looking at what a typical new car costs nowadays. Whether that's a recent college graduate just realizing he wasted his money on a worthless Liberal Arts degree, and has to get a minimum wage job to make ends meet.... To a guy who lost his great-paying job, and realizes no one wants to hire him because he's too old. To the guy who literally did his best, but his wife still left him and took nearly everything from him. And, since the judge gave her his car, he needs a new one while no longer being able to afford a luxury vehicle.

I think the reality of buying and affording cars is important and it's great you're emphasizing it many of your reviews. The bar has been pushed so arbitrarily high that folks feel like they can't get a good car without spending $50k. The GTI is too slow; get a Golf R. The Cadenza isn't luxurious enough; get a ES 350. The Sonata is too slow; get a Stinger. A sad consequence of that is people leverage financing and leasing "generosity" to the limits to their financially destructive end. Being able to afford a car means more than scraping by every month to make the payment. For many people, it comes at the expense of paying off debt, saving for retirement, college savings fun, and time off. Two months of the average car payment in the US in enough for a ticket from the west coast to London. On the one hand, more people need to get some Dave Ramsey in their life and build financial literacy. On the other hand, financial institutions and creditors are carelessly approving car loans and lease deals, reminiscent of the housing crisis. Cars like the Versa, Jetta, Fusion, and others are, in reality, what most people can afford without scraping the barrel and sacrificing in other important areas, though it's interesting to see the sales figures don't reflect that, which shows a larger problem. A Jetta S can be had for around $15k with the manual (at least here in the Pacific Northwest). For most things most people do most of the time, a Jetta or Versa or Elantra are absolutely perfect, but there's a strong force at play guiding and incentivizing you toward a GLI or Elantra N, or heaven forbid a Type R, Golf R, or similar.

My mother had an 07 Versa she purchased new. It was the most reliable and trouble free car. So much so if I ever found one similar I'd consider getting it. It was at 200k when she had an accident 3 years ago, and insurance totaled it. Had that not happened I'm sure it'd still be here chugging along. The biggest issues it had were the driver tail light went out 2 times, the window was slow going up during it's last years, and all but one of the hubcaps had fallen off. No major work done on it, just religious oil changes/tire rotation/that sorta thing. One last thing, it never seemed to want to get much more than 30 mpg unless you were on the highway for a long period of time. Guess that was because to get it to move out of it's own way you had to lay on it. But really, whatever you dished at it it took it. Granted it took it at it's own pace, but it got you there.

Nobody’s gonna talk about how this is the only car still being sold in 2024 with a manual transmission for less than 18k? That’s what everyone should be looking at 👀 I bet it’ll last 200,000+ miles with proper and very cheap maintenance. Not to mention it is probably the most bare bones and easy to work on modern cars with tons of room in the engine bay. The engine has been in production for over 20 years and has proved to be reliable, the manual trans is also made in house by Nissan so that’s also a plus.

Thank Jeebus they improved the buttons/knobs/switches. Previous models felt utterly cheap and miserable. That said, are the seat adjusters still utter trash? Probably the worst seat lever I have ever experienced in Versa/Sentra. Totally agree with you on a lot of older cars riding better. It's bizarre. Compliant and still handle. Not stiff and crashy. The "LET'S DRIVE!" frog in car transition was quite a thing. Art, I say.
