Frosty the casters didn’t know what tf was happening. If they had really good commentators they could predict different options from the players as to what they could do. One good example is Wolfe Glick’s 2016 world championships where the commentators were great. You should watch it

Rhyperior's ability helps a bit, it powers down super-effective moves, combine that with Sand that will increase its Special Defense by 50% OR put up Sun and its actually not so weak to water types. It's very threatening on the offensive side especially with weakness policy so its not like water types can just sit there and tank its moves either.

He was predicting that Rhyperior was going to go for a Protect trying to stall out the sleep. But Wolf somehow predicted that OR didn't even consider that line of play. Wolfe got lucky that Dusclops woke up that very same turn, but It was Alessio's "fault" for having an inaccurate sleep move with high variance even if it does hit. Its the risk you take when you run such a move especially at such a high level.

To be fair there have been formats where this would be commonplace. Fakeout -Scrappy on Loppuny/Mega saw some play, and Fakeout Scrappy Kangaskhan/Into Mega was basically EVERYWHERE once upon a time.

Eric Huggins the excuse of this being a new gen is not valid as both players have teams full of pokemon from previous gens the newest pokemon is the mimikyu from gen 7 followed by hydregion liepard and reuniclus which are gen 5 (edit didn’t really clarify on initial post) but even if the gen has a new meta and format, the game knowledge from previous gens should carry and clearly these commentators don’t play very much.
