This helped me make a decision to go for it, i got a really crazy price on one so Icouldnt resist.(A1521) It needs a bit of tlc & fixing (heat isssue) but that doesnt intimidate me at all. Im quite into bang for buck with older tech, ive started to incorporate some apple hardware into my (home) pc set-up . Ive got a 2009 imac which ive zoomped up as it has Target Display Mode, which is excellent as i always wanted that glorious screen. The speakers were a great bonus too as im half gone in one lug and with spatial audio and Boom 3D I can actually hear properly, so double bonus there. If youd've told me even a few years back that I would've been buying apple gear. id've honestly scoffed at you. Now i'm building up quite a handsome wee collection, ive always been into the design aesthetic & completely into the mac/ white/ black/ silver look. Appreciate the review, i guess ill be onto Time Capsules next, theres some interesting mods going on (6-8tb?!)

Thanks for sharing! Keep that old tech going. Ultimately these macs can still do lots and certainly look after your photos , be a home server. Most of what we do today is through a browser (so the computing power is on google or amazon servers) which means as longs as that browser is kept up to date you are in business. the time capsules is an easy background function for backing things up. The hack is to use your TC for multiple use : back up, partitioned drive for sharing files across your home network et. Maybe even keep your photos on it. Then you need to figure you need to back up the TC in its state ie with back up disk and whatever else you have put on there ! Makes for an interesting challenge.

I have a old 5th gen.update bios to latest version. If you have iphone you can extend your hotspot to the apple extreme routers. On the iphone first name your phone as the name of your network you want. Next on extreme router choose extend a network and input your phones name and your iphones wifi password. The network will be invisable on the extreme. When you turn on the iphones hotspot it will connect with a link(blue link) at top of screen to the extreme. I use net analyzer to check all my ip addresses. It works and its cheap old tech.

I am still using 2 6th gen airport to create a roaming network. They still works great, each of them broadcasting 4 SSID (combined both 2.4 and 5Ghz bands). They can reach a maximum speed of 550Mbps on both upload and download and is still blazing fast(with a total of 25 devices connect via Wi-Fi to both APs). I am still happy with them and will continue to use them until there are too much device for them to handle (like the latency spikes suddenly or the speed limitation (QoS) by my router no longer works well.

Great to hear you are still having success … the device number will be the issue (modern routers/hubs good for 100 devices, and even that number may be too low one day). Shame that Apple does not release a patch to allow more devices , I’m sure it’s feasible .

I missed a test in your video. For example, if you install your base station in your living room and the airport express (extended wifi) in your office… then you start loading a youtube video from the living room and starts walking towards your office. Do you believe it will change seamlessly to the other AP and keep loading the video?
@TechNewOld3 жыл бұрын
The way I had it set up was that the airport base and express had the same name and were in extension mode : does it switch to the closest, I can’t say for sure but I think not. I think if a phone/laptop loses connection (either by chance or by switching WiFi off and on) it will reconnect to the strongest signal. All said the base system on our ground floor could power WiFi in our lift bedroom 2nd floor… but sometimes speed would struggle at that distance .

@TechNewOld3 жыл бұрын
You should be able to. Remember if you are using the Apple extreme and plug into your router, at first you will have two networks the old router network and the new apple network. What I would do is hide the old router network (you would have to log in via a browser), if you don't do not worry just leave it. Once you set up your base station that is attached to your router and set your network up. When you plug in your other base station somewhere else in the house, open airport utility and it should guide you through, ask if you want to extend existing network ... you may need a few trial an errors. Good luck

I have a Time Capsule that still works fine. I’ve been tempted to get a Netgear Nighthawk WiFi 6 mesh system mainly because I have one dead spot in my house where my exercise bike is and to future proof with WiFi 6. And it’s not too expensive right now ($200). One thing I was wondering is if I can still use the Time Capsule to JOIN the new mesh network (it’s like it’s just another device like a phone or computer that way) and still use the Time Capsule functionality for Time Machine. Anybody happen to know if that’s doable?

That’s great that your time capsule still working. They can get very hot and noisy sometimes but it is doing to jobs in on (backup / WiFi). Could also provide an additional WiFi address if that’s needed like office WiFi .

So I picked up the Nighthawk Mesh. Wow so good! 500+MB down in every corner of the house all the time. Stable and consistent. Great purchase. I'm impressed. I got it for only $198 for the router and one satellite I did have some problems trying to add the Time Capsule. It doesn't have a Join option like the Airport Express does which I didn't expect...the only option was to Extend and it wanted to Extend from my Airport Express. I use the Express to add a wireless subwoofer to my HomePods for my television sound. When I attempted the extend (wondering if I could then go in to the settings and change it to Join before I knew that was never going to be an option), it gave me a configuration error and took out the Express with it and then the Express wouldn't rejoin the mesh network either even after a reset. So I wound up needing to turn off the mesh and to re-setup the Time Capsule again to like it was before I got the mesh. And then Joined the Express back to that. Then turned it off and turned the mesh back on and then I got my wirelsss subwoofer back. I think the configuration error was caused because by them both having the same network name and password. I had disconnected the mesh but hadn't actually unplugged it. Using the same network name and password did allow all my devices to automatically reconnect to the new network. So I got it back up and running but still no Time Capsule. So then I created a New Network on the Time Capsule with a different name...which then allowed me to go in to the settings where I chose "Off" for the Network. Then I ran an Ethernet cable from the Express WAN port to a normal Ethernet port on the Time Capsule and Voila! The computers could see and use the Time Capsule hard drive for Time Machine wirelessly! Thanks for the help and the Nighthawk push.

I think the minimum you will possibly need today is an Apple iPhone or iPad to set up your device. Of course your Windows 10 PC will be able to connect to the network and should be able to use the printers that are on that network. If you do attempt this do let us know how you get along! Hi, other than using your A1408 to connect to your primary router and creating an independent network, I cannot see many options joining/extending your existing mesh.
