The cam boat was doing a lot of rocking and rolling downwind....

Awesome video and a great insight into the perspective of a pro! Couple of questions though: Firstly how on earth are you getting that perspective on the 360 camera. I’m guessing its attached to some sorta pole that’s in turn connected to the trans some but it’s really hard to tell. Secondly, I noticed that you had quite a lot of tiller movement, especially on the upwind legs. Do you not find that it is easier to use a shorter tiller extension which you can lock down on your thigh to reduce the movement of the helm as much as possible?

Hi, thanks for your kind words, and observations. You think I steer a lot? I think I steer less than just about anybody, especially right off the starting line when in clear air! This is actually a stock tiller extension, any shorter and it isn't long enough for windy hiking. If one wants the tiller to be absolutely still, it can be placed on the deck just aft of the skipper, like many L@ser sailors do in light air. As you surmised, the camera is mounted on a pole. The pole is secured to the inner vertical wall of the cockpit with half of a suction cup holder used to carry glass panels (www.harborfreight.com/dual-cup-suction-lifter-46134.html ). Just cut the handle in half, so there's actually a spare, or one for a friend. The handle is hollow, so the pole fits into it. The pole is the inner section of a telescoping painters pole (something like this: www.homedepot.com/p/Mr-Longarm-3-ft-6-ft-Adjustable-Extension-Pole-0936P/202017371 ). I discarded the other section to save weight. In a perfect world the pole would be carbon fibre, but this is just a cheap proof of concept. On the threaded end of the pole is a camera mount (www.amazon.com/dp/B00EVWS1JK/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_CtgFFbHH4AAPG ). This mount is heavy but very high quality (don't want to lose an expensive camera!). The mount works for GoPro cameras too. Two very thin dyneema lines tied to the pole (near the camera fitting) act as guy wires. The lines are tied to both sides of the vertical plastic pieces on the transom, as far apart as possible. If you have an older Aero, the lines can be tied to the holes in the aft deck corners that were used for the under-gunnel shock cords for a wider base. Finally, I tie the camera to the pole as an additional safety measure. If tied correctly, this line is in the stitch area of the 360 camera and therefore invisible, but I did a bad job of it this day. Oops!

Marc Jacobi Sailing : It looked a fair bit to me from the video but I dont exactly have much else to compare it to but with that rather impressive setup I can stick my old GoPro on it an find out how dreadful mine is! Thanks a tonne for the incredible detailed response though, I have been looking a way to attach a camera to the boat while keeping all the important stuff in shot but never way to do it! And a massive thanks for sharing all of these videos which I personally have used to transition to make the switch away from other single handlers to the Aero. Without your videos I probably would be still pottering around at the back of the fleet with very little clue how to improve. The 360 videos also adds a whole new level to things allowing us viewers to gain a great perspective on not only what’s going on inside the boat but outside the boat as well which brings context into the decisions you make based on your positioning in the fleet. Hope your doing well and good luck for the rest of the season! :)

@@foxamongdeli6745 I'm so happy the videos inspired you to join the Aero Class. Isn't it a great boat?? Once you get your camera fitted, take some videos. I do virtual coaching (for a fee, natch) where I watch your video, then add comments to it and repost it as an unlisted KZbin video for your use. For details: Marc@MarcJacobi.com

isnt that too much rocking and pumping upwind or was it legal that day?
@marcjacobisailing62494 жыл бұрын
Upwind, or down? Definitely not the former, the latter may have gotten a bit excessive near the leeward mark.

Marc Jacobi Sailing sorry yes downwind, we have to keep the aeros out of the pumping reputation of lasers :p
