We bought our first Outback last year (2021). It’s my wife’s commuter car and our road car. We live in north central WA state up in the mtns on a private road that we have to plow and maintain ourselves. We get 5-6 feet of snow every winter. We’ve found that the Outback is far superior over any other 4WD or AWD vehicle that we’ve ever owned. We love it so much that a few days ago we replaced our 11 Rav 4WD Limited with the 3.5 V6 with a slightly used Forester Touring, (Sephia Bronze with Brown leather interior). The Mtn passes are closed due to snow, so we’ll go to Seattle ASAP to pick it up. It’s a 2019 and get this, it has only 4,700 miles on it. I’m retired and in my late 50s. I only drive about 5K miles a year, so I doubt I’ll ever have to buy another vehicle before my death.

The change from physical buttons, such as on the 2019 Outback, to touchscreen is not only cumbersome and awkward but is also dangerous. To operate the touchscreen functions takes the drivers attention off the road. Physical buttons can be a learned and natural movement, without taking the drivers attention off the road. - I hope you’re listing, Subaru.

Completley agree, I'd so much rather have buttons. I'm still probably going to end up with the new Outback because it's ecactly what I want from my next car, but not having the physical buttons will be a bit of an annoyance.

The paddle shifters are totally necessary in winter climates with hilly terrain. I use my paddle shifters down huge grades in the snow almost daily in the winter. We already had all the “press” knocking the cvt because it didn’t “feel” like a standard transmission. That was one of the best parts - my new 2019 now has a lag simulating shifts that my 2011 didn’t suffer from. I prefer the 2011. Paddle shifters and CVT - just a great combo where I live. Keep it up Subaru. I own 4 Subarus from 2003 to 2019.

I use paddle shifters in the mountains for engine braking. Some CVTs have a "low" mode that lets the revs higher but it gives a medium performance in the mountains. I am glad the paddles are there but I realise I might be edge case scenario. Hopefully this Outback is more comfortable for me than Forester, which seems to be targeted for ordinary height people - over 5'5 :)

The manual mode on the CVT is useful for when you want to keep the rpms consistent like driving in snow, crawling off-road or engine braking on the downhill. I use mine most when I'm scared shitless driving down a super icy road and I don't want to touch my brakes. I agree though, it's mostly useless except a few special situations.

our rental in colorado was a 2018 outback with full everything. we tried the paddle shifters on the way down from pikes peak and they were extremely useful. (consistently braking hard on a downhill when its 40 degrees outside causes your rotors to warp quicker. engine braking will prevent that)
@usernameplaylist

For people asking why the paddle shifters, it is for holding “gears”. Like in the manual, holding a lower gear to get in and out of traffic gives you much more control.

@roy-whereamI
@roy-whereamI 4 жыл бұрын
And the full size spare has the same wheel as the other 4 tires. This was a surprise to me when I picked up my new Onyx. Usually the manufacturer will use the cheapest wheel they can find for the spare, which means you can't use the spare during tire rotation and get longer life out of your first set of tires.

I had the opportunity to test drive the Onyx yesterday from the local dealer. My current vehicle is a '02 Toyota Tacoma with 280k+ miles. All of my previous vehicles have been SUVs or trucks. The bottom line - I haven't owned a vehicle that could be considered quick or sporty in any way. Took the Onyx up the highway, laid on the gas while already up to speed and it had plenty of passing power. Exited the highway, then got back on in the other direction. The merge is under construction so it's a short one, and I purposely waited until the last second to hit the gas hard, just to see how much pop the Turbo engine had. Went from about 20 to 65mph in such quick fashion that I yelled "Holy sh$%!" Once again, coming from somebody using a tired truck, I can't imagine the everyday driver needs more acceleration for than this thing offers. Wish there was an area to test drive it on some winding roads, but first impression is that it drives great for the likes of me.

Paddle shifters are great, especially when you're driving on snow and ice covered roads. They allow you to have some sort of control instead of letting the electronics take over. I have a 2017 Forester XT and use the shifters regularly, especially on snow covered roads. Makes me less likely to have to press the brakes, and have the potential to go into a slide. Also they help add a bit of fun for a more spirited drive.

I enjoyed my ‘12 Outback. Except for the out of warranty repair bills. From the time I bought it in 2015 till last week, I spent 10.5k on ongoing repairs and none were cause of abuse or error. The final straw was after spending that 10.5k, was an internal blown head gasket. 5.5 K bill from my local Subaru dealer. 138k miles on the engine. I cut my losses. My research shows me that my experience is the norm. Don’t get one without a warranty.

So when does the front suspension rattle start? "Bombing down dirt roads"? I live on a dirt road and my 2017 legacy sounds like the front suspension is going to rattle loose only after 3k miles.. was very excited to finally get a subaru but this noise is not impressive.

They should just put in a regular automatic. There is no point in adding fake shift points, which reduces the fuel economy...which is the whole reason they went to a CVT in the first place. And regular automatics have greater longevity.

Having a 2015 outback 2.5i, the manual shifting is absolutely critical for ANY kind of passing. I find the car HIGHLY underpowered if you are doing anything more than city driving full time. That being said, the turbo probably doesn't need it, but maybe it's some of the fun factor that the outback has lacked.

@@tpolerex7282 That would appear to be correct. However, there will be an optional dealer installed Rockford Fosgate speaker/amp upgrade (you can see it if you build a Crosstrek on the Subaru site) as well as a wireless charging pad option. Lance l. Yeah, I noticed that too. I’m confident if one were to do that yourself with an aftermarket upgrade to speakers + amplifier you could do twice as good quality for the same the dealer would charge. The additional $3-4K for the Limited-Touring XT over the Onyx XT for the features I don’t absolutely need (I mean, it’s not a panoramic moonroof) would be a hard pillow to swallow for me but we’ll see how they’ll deal after they’ve been out for a few months.

A head-to-head overall comparison (including off-road capability) between this and the Honda Passport would be awesome. I think a lot of people are comparing these two cars for purchase (I was recently, went with the Passport), and they share a similar marketing position of being road-worthy, yet capable soft-roaders for those who don't want a full-on, large 4WD SUV or Truck.

Excellent review. I live in New Zealand and have the 2019 3.6 litre and it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. My previous car was an Audi RS4 2014 and for everyday life I much prefer the Soobie. The 2020 looks awesome but I think I’ll miss the 6 cylinder. The cvt trans is ok too, the best of its kind and it’s ok for towing smaller boats. These cars are so comfortable and smooth on NZ’s rough back roads that I can’t think of a better all round vehicle. Why buy a euro luxury barge when you can own one of these for half the money. Well done Subaru.

Why paddle shifters @ 9:32? So when you are crawling down that steep, snowy mountain road (because, you know Subaru Outback owners), you can put it in “2nd gear” and manage your speed without braking, locking the wheels, skidding and crashing.

Thanks for pointing out lack of acoustic glass in the door. As a previous owner of 2011 outback which was a very capable car ....and as refined as a lawn mower...acoustic isolation is for me the most important factor when picking new car. If you have to step up to close to 40k MSRP to get very refined feel and capable AWD...might as well look at palisade or telluride. For the money you get better refinement and one more row of seats. Not too mention you can step up to barely used luxury suv with low miles.

I loved my 2009 Outback 2.5XT. At 68K miles, I thought for sure I'd have it for another 10 years. 3 months ago, transmission failed and for this model/year, there was no repair, only replacement at a cost of 5K (independent) or 7K (dealer). When I was aware that Subaru was making XT available for 2020, I was intrigued but I couldn't resolve my trust issues with them. Mostly everything being on a touch display is not appealing. With my 2009 Outback, and now my current vehicle, I didn't have to take my eyes off of the road to access controls, I knew exactly where everything was. Can't do that with a touchscreen. But still, overall it is very appealing. Thanks for posting the vid!

@@drivingsports I'm not talking about slow-speed, off-road use, I'm talking about on-road descents at higher speeds (as you'd do in the mountains). Obviously, you could do the same thing with the shift lever, but I find the paddle shifters handier.
