I have recently sold my 3.2 xlt Ranger which I was very happy with and dare I say had no issues with at 126000km. However I now have a 2.8 Legend 4x4 and am extremely happy with it. I have had it mapped to 175kw and 594nm. My consumption around town is 10.8 and on a recent trip to Clarens from Durban I got 8.1 per 100 up and 7.5 liters per 100 on the return trip unladen. Towing my 4x4 trailer is effortless. Sorry I know this review is about the 2.4 but my point is that the consumption is not that much different. Thanks for the video.

Great vid, funny enough this is the only review I have found on this shape raider. I’m about to buy a 4x2 (budget constraints) identical to this car, so it’s been great watching this. More on a raider would be great thanks!

Thank you @Monty0356. Yes- we were extremely sad to hand the keys back over to the fleet manager when we had to return our test vehicle. The good news is that your 4x2 model can still be used for soft overlanding and gravel destinations, although please do remember to get your suspension looked at before kitting out with canopy, rooftop tent and extras. Here's a very useful article and video on the difference between an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) suspension, and an aftermarket suspension.www.sa4x4.co.za/4x4-suspensions-debunked/ oh! and most importantly ;) which colour did you opt for?

@@SA4x4online thank you that awesome, I'll take a look at that link. It didnt even cross my mind that non OEM's canopies could cause issues, thank! My toyota mates are going to kick my but for not buying a white one, but I'm getting a silver one, looks exactly like your reviewed car;) I love it in silver!!

I drive a 2018 2.4 gd6 d/c already it has 140 000 km on the clock, no issues enough power to tow my caravan, and I enjoy my bakkie. My only comment, smaller engine bakkies has to fil the gap for the more expensive one's, but please when you do tests on these vehicles STOP comparing them to the top of the range models, they are there for a reason, therefore test and evaluate them as they are and compare apples with apples. I like these information videos but it gets irritating when they start comparing lower spec engines with higher spec ones.

Hi @Willem Stolz, thank you for getting in touch with us. Can we boldly ask you what type of caravan you tow with your GD6 and the weigh of the caravan when fully loaded? We are very interested to know. Yes - we do also agree that it would be extremely beneficial to compare vehicles with similar engine spec - because after all that would be the key difference in any towing experiences too. granted if both weights are the same. However, our access to fleet cars is mostly permitted on new release models that are available and that have been undamaged. Where about are you based? Perhaps we can invite you along for our next review if we are located near the same towns. Then we can locate something new and compare it to something slightly older and more established? Have you seen some of our Brand Fanatics videos here: kzbin.info/aero/PLKvCmG66GsKDcE0AGe6RG4DkPENmHox4S

@@SA4x4online I had a Gypsey Romany and the weight was around 1500kg's. I live in Middelburg MP. It will be nice to see more comparisons of lower spec vehicle's because that is the work horses and not every one can afford those expensive bakkies. Regards

@@willemstoltz1595 Absolutely @Willem! We shall do out best! Thank you. Middelburg is not that far from one of our offices. We shall be in touch next time we do a vehicle test up there. If you do have the time, and are able to help contribute - may we boldly ask you what your average fuel consumption is towing the Gypsey Romany Caravan? that would help.

When I towed down to the coast I got 12.4L/100km and coming back it dropped to 13L/100km. Towing on the highveld I more or less average 13L/100km. But the towing experience was good very stable not using a stabiliser and the handeling and breaking very good in fact I had a close shave going down to the coast with someone suddenly stopping in front of me and I applied harsh breaking without any fish tailing or possibility of jacknife. Great vehicle for towing but don't expect to go all the way up Van Rheenen's in 5th gear... Regards

@@willemstoltz1595 WOW! 13L/100km on the 24.GD6 is really good going! Plus - it sounds like you're an experienced Caravaner. We shall see if we can find anything similar to that weight for our next test. We also think it would be good to replicate your 1500KG towing conditions from up where you are - down to the coast with a variety of models to see which would be more economical. weather permitting ofcourse. Thank you for letting us know!

We recently went to Durban from PTA. I got 7.2l/100 going down and 8.3l/100 on the way up in my 2.4 4x4 Auto(speed set to 115-120km/h). I do around 10 in town but that's with no highway on my work commutes. I'm more than pleased with my 2.4.

I’ve ridden this one I guess it’s not bad. Towing and stuff will be issue for this underpowered hilux but otherwise day to day is key focus for this bakkie. Nice review but in depth reviews are better 👊🏾🤝

Thanks Ozem, Yes, the 2.4 is not as powerful as the 2.6 that is true. However these days with an emphasis on lighter RTT's (rooftop tents), offroad trailers and caravans - the 2.4 is still sufficient for most of these applications. The benefit however is less fuel consumption when used for your routine daily run around. Also we believe the cost of the 2.4 engine spec is also slightly less than their 2.6 big brother. i guess at the end of the day one will always have to consider vehicle application VS cost. What did you tow/ carry with the 2.4?
@ozemsadventureofrandomstuf252
@ozemsadventureofrandomstuf252 3 жыл бұрын
@@SA4x4online it was simply general ride didn’t have anything in loading area or tow anything. I mean Toyota claims that 2.4 can tow over 1800KG that’s plenty enough for most basic trailers. Personally because of sheer cost I would rather have this 2.4 but in 4x4 guise but for open road driving I’m sure this engine will be stressed out bit?
@SA4x4online
@SA4x4online 3 жыл бұрын
@@ozemsadventureofrandomstuf252 Thanks Ozem, Naaa. We dont think the engine would stress out if you don't fill the load bin or tow anything. The common rule is, Less weight = less fuel ;) In our experience it is only the engines that are 1.4L - 1.8L with turbos and superchargers that often come under strain. Most vehicles above the 2L mark enter a different caliber of engine. In our experience we only have encountered two circumstances of "limp mode" from two SUV's. none of which were Toyota ;) Which province/ town are you situated in? and what condition are your roads?

If only they gave it decent headlights.... halogens should have been banned on new cars by now....
@SA4x4online
@SA4x4online 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris. yeah - the great debate on halogens VS LED's is still pretty much alive - as there are positives and negatives form using each one. however, what should be banned is the use of light bars on national roads. But again...that's another sensitive topic which we feel boils down to the independent drivers. Light bars are great for trail driving and game viewing. But there are always the inconsiderate few who use them on our national roads....
@SA4x4online
@SA4x4online 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisDied Halogen headlights were the norm for the auto industry for years because they were cost effective to manufacture and easy to replace, but now LEDs are outshining them, the differences are explained below. Halogens are incandescent lights that utulise a tungsten filament inside the bulb. When an electric current passeses through the filament, it heats up and generates light. They differ somewhat from regular incandescent bulbs because they have a dose of halogen gas inside the housing instead of Argon gas. Halogen bulbs are brighter than regular incandescent bulbs and tend to last a lot longer. With LED technology ( Light Emitting Diode), an electric current passes through a semiconductor (or diode) to produce light that is bright and generates less heat. LEDs operate about 90% more efficiently than incandescent bulbs, because they generate less heat, that helps them last much longer than other types of lights. LEDs also typically don’t burn out like incandescent bulbs, though they do dim over time and with use, depending on the quality of your LEDs. Because LEDs are smaller than bulb-type lights, they allow more design freedom with headlights and other vehicle lights. The downside is that they are more expensive than halogens or high-intensity-discharge headlights ( HID Headlights), which typically use xenon gas. As for lightbars, it depends on your peripheral light. Some lightbars have a 30 degree focused beam light, which is exceeding bright when focused on an object in the distance. Others are set to around 60 degrees, which is not over centrically concentrated and therefore usually not as bright if shone directly into someone eyes. We have encountered a few oncoming light bars in our time, they are a great 4x4 accessory. However they must be used with caution, as centrically focused LED lightbars can severely hinder your field of vision at night if used improperly. It takes between 10-20 minutes for a person’s eyes to adjust to the dark when driving at night. When you shine a light bar into them, even from a distance, it can cause temporary damage to your cone cells and retina. If you’ve never faced an oncoming vehicle with an LED lightbar, or one that sits behind you close enough to read your fuel gauge….you’ve been extremely lucky!
