Sunday night at Tottenham Stadium, resurgent Real are in town, with 10 of 12 points in their last 4, they seek to continue their run in London. Tottenham are coming off a disappointing 0-1 to Arsenal and they have not been the same since Diogo Jota crushed their hearts in the final seconds of their MD06 tilt, tying 16th place Chelsea the following week before losing to Arsenal. Tonight is also Gareth Bale’s first encounter with his old team, things haven’t gone that smoothly for Bale’s return to Tottenham, he has only 1 assist all season, so a breakout performance would be quite timely.
Spurs got off to a rocket start, going up in the 6th minute thanks to Steven Bergwijn’s short range chip having been assisted by Harry Kane. Tottenham Stadium erupted in deafening frenzy, like a bear waking up from hibernation, their supporters had been starved with only one measly point from their last three.
There was still a long way to go and Real were not going to lay down and give up the points. The effort to equalize began immediately, but Real could not find goal despite a number of chances. Spurs closed out the half with a few chances themselves, but the match went to half still 1-0.
The 2nd continued much the same and Spurs would cash in with the dynamic duo of Son-Kane, with Kane finishing, a rocket blast to the corner. At 2-0 the desperation from Real went into overdrive, but alas the sound and fury of a muted whimper as they failed badly on the chances they generated and their attack was snuffed out before long, with Spurs once again threatening goal as time waned.
It would end 2-0 Spurs, a big victory for the London side as they were in danger of sliding down the table in a manner that would be quite arduous to reverse. Tonight’s win puts Spurs right back into the elite blender, they will move up one spot to 5th and get ready to face another Madrid club next week, 3rd place Atletico. It will be compelling theatre to be sure.
A bit of a hiccup for Real, who had been on fire over their last 4 games, it will be telling to see how they react, but unfortunately will have to do it against #1 Liverpool. A solid performance, if not a victory, will at least settle concerns about returning to the bottom part of the table.
