@@Goozzie Oh the results are as bad as he shows. I got mine today and started with benchmarks and just found this video a bit ago after all of the disappointment. The GPU throttle is real. Best Buy lies as well, but that is the fault of Asus more than Best Buy I think. I still can't find legit spec sheets for this exact model so BB could only show the promo material Asus sent them.

It seems that ASUS is a good buy especially if you plan to hook it up with an external display, and luckily, that's what I plan to do. It's a small trade-off considering that every other brand with a 3070 is offering their laptops way above $2100+

Cons for me is no webcam, cpu gets too hot, needs bigger battery if possible, and the exhaust is blowing against screen should cut the bottom part of screen to blow out more air.

Ay man, the battery is already at 90whr and the max you can take on an airplane is 99whr if i remember correctly, so battery size has pretty much reached the limit. For a gaming laptop i feel that this is about as good of a battery life you're going to get this gen, the laptop is already using a max-q gpu and optimus plus a lower wattage cpu. Hopefully Nvidia doesn't rely on further increasing the wattage to boost next gen performance. But your other points are valid, i think not having a webcam for a productivity focused laptop really sucks. And maybe they could've designed the cooler to work better for the cpu, but then again I don't think the 5900HS hit even 90°C so it's already pretty well cooled imo.

Yes, I certainly have no plans to sell my 2070 super laptop. I do like how these Asus laptops with their 90wh batteries and Ryzen CPUs have great battery life. I just wish they had a mux switch so we can switch to dGPU when we want more oomph.

I'm not tech savy on this. But isn't there a DELL G5 with both AMD cpu and GPU last year? How did that perform in switching between iGPU and dGPU? Is there a switch for these two options on all AMD laptops? Smart shift on DELL G5 should be similar to Dynamic Boost from Nvidia. But is MUX or Optimus NVIDIA only features on laptops?

I understand they are more powerful but does it really matter in games? A couple of questions for bypassing Optimus: 1. Can I use any USB-C to DP adapter, or do I have to look for a specific one? 2. Does FreeSync work using a USB-C to DP adapter if the monitor is FreeSync enabled?

I used the below USB C to DP dongle with no issues. I was able to use G-Sync no problem on both G-Sync and FreeSync monitors (that support G-Sync). I don't think the iGPU is good enough personally to even be concerned with whether or not FreeSync works (30 fps in Rocket League, 1080p). The scar is not even 125w AND it STILL has no mux switch. Asus performs even worse in the higher end, fucking joke lmao. Oh and so much for hulking, because the 130w gigabyte aorus 15P only weighs 4.4 lbs, which is 0.2 lbs more then the G15 and has mux. So it DESTROYS it in games, in fact techreviews tested it and found it was a whopping 27% faster overall. Pathetic. Yeah stay away from Asus and you'll do just fine. They've always been shafting gamers, especially with their tuf a15 broken cooling from last year and G14 QC issues

i see the frame pacing is very bad in farcry 5 test, the FPS jumps frequently which will cause stutter in non gsync monitors. From next videos can you also show the framtime graphs as a part of min fps,average fps ? because we would like to know how stable the CPU is able to keep the FPS stable

Hi Stephen, I found a new open box Aorus 17x laptop (10875h + 2080S + 300HZ) for $1900+ tax, do you think I should get that or pay more for a 3080 laptop like a GE76? I personally will be using it with a monitor and play games in 2k or 4k. I do not care about absolute performance as I don't play first personal shooting games. I play games like shadow of the tomb raider, resident evil, final fantasy..etc. I mainly care more about the built quality and cooling and play the games I like in at least 2k smoothly. In your opinion, do you think the Aorus 17x can keep up with the 3070 and 3080 laptops that are in the same price range? I can afford to buy any laptop even for US$10k, but I want to be wise and get what I need, not what I want. Please let me know. Thank you.

I am a little confused. You mention that performance is better with external monitor, correct? Were any of the benchmarks show evidence of that? I am not sure I interpreted the charts correctly. I plan to attach a 144hz 1440 panel (arrives on Tuesday, lg gn850) and I am hopeful to see some improved frame rates. As it is now I seem to get better fps on the notebook panel versus the lg ultra wide 1440 I am currently running that maxes out at 60hz using a usb-c to DisplayPort cable.I am not expecting top tier gpu performance albeit it’s better than my gen 1 threadripper and xt5700xt desktop as is. I like the cpu for work and the 3070 is just a bonus saving me one more upgrade cycle as I needed a laptop. Please let me know if I missed the details on the comparison to Optimus, whether that is negated by using DisplayPort or not. Thank you.

As far as I’m aware, connecting to an external monitor directly from the dGPU (through USB C) should net you the same performance jump as disabling Optimus :)

On a second watch, I noticed at least one of the charts includes data for the external display, but it was mentioned on a few titles ( no titles that I play however ). I will find out for myself on Tuesday regard D2 and look forward to testing on Outriders come the 25th... this low power unit combined with dlss may yield all the fps I will need.

Systems with that GPU start at $999 so it seems quite enticing but I suspect that will be the lower powered units with 60 hz panels. I have the Gigabyte G5 coming in. That costs $1100 and has the i5 CPU and 3060. You can probably get some good deals for laptops with a 2080 MQ or 2070 max P as well.

once you flash this laptop with 140w bios it wakes up from 9200 graphics score in timespy to 11500, and with a msi bios that shunt mods it to like 160w expect 12600- 12900 graphics score in time spy. battery will drain while plugged in but capping frame rate slows the drain and heat or running games at 4k. internals on this laptop are strong

This laptop is great but that 3070 really gets neutered in dual cpu/gpu load games IE cyberpunk outdoors as it pretty much locks the gpu at it's 80watt limit, overclocking in armory crate helps somewhat but watts seems like they are still king. Maybe Asus can push an update out to lock it at 90w, it easily has the thermal headroom. Granted if you don't need to play at max settings with ray tracing in 1440p you can get good framerates

G15/g14 is great "laptop" with its great battery life, color accuracy, keyboard and trackpad, and speakers. It is important to understand that this is not an enthusiast-level machine, it's a premium laptop that is also a beast gaming machine. It's 2 cm thick, you can't expect max performance, it is already incredible. Scar is for "gaming". G14/15 are not the best at one thing, they are good at everything. Which makes them so cool, and people value it, it is quite difficult to find it in stock.

Man. I really was looking forward to this laptop. But it barely outperforms my 2070 max-q. For example, rdr2 high 1080p you get 63avg I'm getting 55-58ish with ultra-high settings.

thank you for this video. i bought the G15 and I thought I was going crazy because I just didn't see the appeal like every other KZbinr was. Games like Control and Cyberpunk cannot be played at max settings at 1440p, dropping it down to 1080p boosts some fps but its still not buttery smooth. This laptop isn't future proof. It's a great all-in-one though.

This laptop will suffice I do love me some raytracing, at least that part of the 3070 won't disappoint, this 2080 max q is crippled in this oled alienware which is crazy they did NOT put a mux switch in it. If this m15 oled had the same mux their non oled laptops had it would probably be a keeper. I have been playing cyberpunk 2077 at ultra ray tracing with slight overclocked 2080 max q DLSS on ultra performance at 4k with like 40fps. Asus has been a favorite PC part manufacturer of mine for years though, what really sold me on the Asus is the liquid metal TIM, their actual engineering concern for fan noise, and the 2k high refresh panel seems like a wonderful compromise between gaming and work resolution to refresh. I am going to be spending alot of time now working on my laptop from home programming (new career) why I considered the 4k lol but I been ruined ever since I first tried a 144hz panel (I been using a 60hz panel for like 30 years until my last laptop (asus g73sw 60hz) finally bit the bullet. So thank you to wonderful reviewers like you to catch me up on architecture and performance from the past 10+ years lol Ps. Is mux possible with oleds even?

The MUX in 2021 is a MUST now basically! It was only you, Jarrod, Bob even talking about it too. Glad to see TechTesters and Gizmosliptech bringing this up as well. I returned an Eluktronics 2070 for a Clevo 2070 w/ mux in 2018 after seeing the fps difference. This just reassures me that man am I glad I did! Clearly this issue is not going away..

Looks like Optimus is really killing the performance, especially when more powerful graphics cards are being used and nvidia probably needs to do something to optimize it or Laptop vendors should starting using MUX switch in their performance laptops, to take advantage of these high performance graphics cards.

Personally I would go with the GE66 as it has the mux switch and SD card reader. Plus 1080p webcam and nicer RGB. The frame rates are definitely faster on the GE66. The Strix 15/17 look pretty good too.

Great video as always! I'm honestly happy with this laptop and I intend to keep it. Yes, it would be nice if it had a Mux switch, but I sometimes use it connected to my 3440x1440 G-Sync monitor via USB-C to displayport and I'm quite happy with its performance there too. One thing I have noticed when playing on the laptop itself is that the keys are not always as sensitive as I might like, and require a really firm push to register - for example, hitting R to reload a gun. It may just the the way I hit keys when gaming, and hasn't been an issue for me when typing. I think this machine is a great balance between power and general usability. It's disappointing that it's held back from its full gaming potential by optimus, but I'm willing to live with it. Great screen, great speakers, good keyboard, solid build - it's a good all round machine IMO. I still have the issue with radeon software crashing when on the external monitor, annoying and should be fixed, but not a dealbreaker.

Glad you like it Craig ! I like it too. Battery life is great. I did have one issue where Armory crate wouldn't open and when I was trying to do the Fortnite test it was capped at 30 fps. I suspected it was stuck in silent mode. Uninstalled Armory crate but it wouldn't let me reinstall it. Had to do a system restore. So thay was a bit off putting, I think Armory crate is a bit flakey I also couldn't install Watch Dogs Legion for some reason..

​@@OWNORDISOWN I haven't had problems with armoury crate so far, but I did notice (and there was a post on reddit) that BIOS update 402 got rid of the iGPU mode that was in armory crate, and messed up battery life estimates. However they just posted a 404 update which I took today via MyAsus and seems to have solved those issues. I own Watch Dogs Legion on Ubisoft Connect/UPlay so I will download it and see what happens. I've mostly been playing Ghost Recon Breakpoint, also on Ubisoft Connect. I don't have their subscription, I just own the individual games. BTW about the GE66 i7-10750H, I may be stuck with it. I tried to return it to Best Buy and the store manager refused, saying I return too much stuff, and cited that I had recently returned the 2070 super version. I'm undecided on just keeping it, or trying to return it a different way, online for example, or a different BB store. I had also recently bought the G14 from them, and after that manager rebuked me, I applied for an online return on that, which is working so far. They gave me a label, I shipped it, they've received it, and now I'm waiting to see whether they refund me or reject the return. If it goes through, I'll either try the same with the GE66 or just keep it. The GE66 is a good machine, I just cringe at the i7-10750H for the price. Having said that, because I had wiped the GE66 intending to return, now that I still have it, I have set it up again, and I have not seen the graphical corruption (yet) that I saw in dGPU mode before. I have not re-performed the -80mV undervolting yet but it also seems to be running a tad cooler than it did before. If I keep the GE66, it will mainly be in my desk setup, connected to the monitor, while the G15 will be my couch machine, and my travel machine - assuming I start traveling again!!

@@OWNORDISOWN I was able to install and run Watch Dogs Legion with no problems from Ubisoft Connect. On 1440p Very High with RTX medium and DLSS balanced - 40-45fps walking/running, and around 40fps +/- 1-2fps driving. I only played for about 5 minutes.

I need to decide if I *really* need 2 machines - it's convenient, for sure, but it's not pocket change, although I very luckily can afford it. If I sell or return it, am I getting rid of it, or replacing it with something else, and if so, what. May be wise to see what Q2, Q3 etc bring. The G15 is a keeper though, that one's sticking around unless some unexpected major issue pops up. As for Best Buy, it was quite a slap in the face after the amount of money I've spent with them over the years!

just got mine...for some reason in the latet "final" msi afterburner and newest riva tuner update....i dont even have a CPU temp option in the OSD/monitoring panel/tab. IDK why....nor does it have cpu power....is there a way to disable the vega graphics? as ive just removed gpu1 from all of the afterburner monitoring check mark options to completely remove it from the etc chart/graphs. GPU2 is the 3070mq....of which ive seen running up to 100w........ive also force capped wattage in manual to 20-30w depending on the title to help with thermals as i see little return to fps enabling 35+w in manual. As i had to put my own fancurve in as i find this G15 idling and typical operating TEMP as rather high 60-70s....if not on silent mode in just about any other profile. Speakers wise no issue what so ever and one of the best on a laptop im actually enjoying playing games like GTAV on this laptop with its speakers as an example. Ironically on maxed no msaa the gpu doesnt even hit full tilt...msaa4x and nvidia msaa enabled....up to 100w and 1500mhz. MSAA off 50-80w only vsync enabled bc gtav buggs tf out in interface/map w.o vsync.

@@martinaee I travel A LOT so a skin was crucial for protection against incidental bumps and scratches. Looks weren’t important to me, so I just went with the black leather, with the understanding that it has the thickest texture (M2 mentioned that on their website). The precision of cutouts and overall vinyl quality is on par with DBrand skins, at a much lower cost. Just food for thought.

From what I've seen in benchmarks it's about a 5-10 fps difference between the 3060 and 3070 max q in most games but it really comes down to what you are playing it's really up to you if that extra 5-10 frames is worth the extra cost also if you're playing at 1080p the 3060 would be a better option if you are at the native resolution of the g15 (1440p) you'd probably be better off with a 3070

Yes, on any laptop that uses Optimus that is the case. If you get one that runs off the dedicated GPU only then you will get max frame rate. Some laptops like the GE66 have a mux switch allowing you to manually make the switch between iGPU and dGPU after a reboot. Eluktronics will have some Ryzen laptops with same functionality.

PROBLEMS HELP! Ok, I bought the Zephyrus G15 grey model Ryzen 5900hs 3700. It's my 4/5th week in and when I want to play Apex Legends or Battlefield 1, remember BF1 is an older game. I get booted out, I turned everything on low as well and after sometime and get booted to the desktop. An error occurs called "DirectX Function hr1 failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED. It says the cause is that the graphic card was physically removed or there is an new update. Nothing was removed and everything was up to date. It says also another cause can be the graphic card is crashing, but how!! Please HELP, what should I do about. The laptop is brand new.

Hmmm.. I didn't understand why amd vega was utilised when dgpu was active. Its a shame nvidia optimus still ruins gameplay experience with internal screen . We may need rdna2/3 based mgpu to destroy nvidia. I think most Turing and Pascal mobile GPU owners are laughing with not so much thermal headroom and power limiters.

I think nvidia is going power optimised causing vega and ampere to suck power like hell, Linux users might be familiar with constant dgpu usage in optimus mode. I think it's first adopter issue for advanced optimus 3.0 which could be fixed by vbios or driver update or bios update or possibly lovelace or hopper mgpu. Sad to see nvidia control panel doesn't play nice with amd adrenaline drivers.
