Good review, What Car Team! As for the car - it looks just like an X3 on the inside and the outside, but without four wheel drive capability, and the rear wheel drive it does have is not very sporty. Underwhelmed is the word that comes to mind. Why would anyone pay £60k for this?

you will be positively surprised by the real range of the IX 3 when you will review it later in 2021. It seems to be the first car I know which can really reach the WLTP range of 460 km without switching off the ac. BMW said they worked on the efficiency and they could therefore choose a slightly smaller battery than an Audi Q 4 or Mecerdes EQC.

I gave up my diesel X3 for an ETron earlier this year as BMW hadn't bought this out yet. I did contemplate waiting but wanted to take advantage of the 0% BIK so bit the bullet and swapped from BMW to Audi after a number of years being loyal to BMW. I'm really glad I did now as this just doesn't do a lot for me I'm afraid. The styling looks plasticky and cheap, the interior has kept the 'stick on screen' on the dash which I'm not a fan of (I prefer screens integrated) and only 2 wheel drive. Overall I think its a bit of a poor effort but no doubt it will sell to BMW fan boys, of which I used to be one of so I'm disappointed as I really wanted to like it. I shall look again in a few years when my lease is up on the E Tron.

@@Darkest_matter yes but for an electric car that’s simply not going to happen. Remember that VW will charge near that for the ID3 and BMW for the i3. So for this larger model it will cost much more to make it inline with the Etron pricing and EQC. I 100% agree though, the markup over an ICE car is what makes it a rip off as you won’t save anything at all. Tesla model 3 costs £50,000+ and it’s the equivalent to the A4. I would save the £20,000 mark up md take the Audi, better car all around and fuel for the normal person won’t cost more than 2k a year

yes I agree, the dealers won't want them. Already similar issues with Audi E-Trons and indifferent clueless dealers. I think 40k annually is optimistic, maybe less than half that number. BMW already has year long waiting lists for their other bodge job, the Mini-e. Clearly there is demand for the cars, even ICE conversions, but battery constraints means building the cars is pointless if you don't have (cost effective) batteries to put in them. The trouble traditional auto has, is they cannot bully suppliers, particularly battery suppliers - they either pay the bill or don't make EVs.

Questions from a BMW i3 owner: HeatPump or resistance heater ? resistance heater will knock off at least 15% of range on the coldest days. Will BMW provide over-the -air updates ? or any updates to the EV side. I3s in the USA have major issues connecting to DCFC, BMW refuses to provide CCS updates. I've talked to Electrify America several times, they have been helpful - BMW is behind on CCS updates. 2018 and 2019 I3s seem to have less issues with DCFC, 2014-2017 have ongoing DFCS connection issues. This is a fully loaded car and a similar 5 Series would cost same or in most cases more...will sell brilliant as company car due to full equipment and low taxes. There is also a first test of consumption on YT and this test achieved 14.7kwh for a mixed route including a little bit Autobahn...excellent! He would achieve 500km with this car, which will be for sure better with the I4...and is already better than Model X for example. The refill time does not matter and is overestimated by most people...I stay at least 12h at home in the night and no one comes home with 0% in the Batterie in normal days. The missing 50% or so...are easily filled in the night for anyone. On longer journeys you can charge with 150kw...I am really interested in the charging curve, if it as brilliant as the eTron, which is nearly flat from 10 to 80% at 150kw...no one reaches this even Tesla. And Tesla Björns 1000km and Loading tests, shows that this curve is very important and even is faster as a Tesla, as soon we load to 80 or 90%...although a peak of 270kw at the beginning. Tesla Owners load to 60% and more often instead of loading to 90%, since they know that charging drops heavily after this and is time consuming. This is why I am interested in this curve and when any youtuber has done such a test. ;-)

@@josefv-y8m IF you hold a magnifying glass at the EV, even then this one does not stack up particularly well. It has neither the range, the speed or even the price of the Tesla model 3. Regardless of this, batteries as a source of fuel are poor. You will find no application of batteries in ANY large transportation vehicle. IF batteries were a better source the military would have adopted battery tech yesterday. EV are not especially green. (I've seen articles claiming you have to drive 100K miles before an EV will begin to look remotely greener vs a fossil fueled vehicle. Regarding refueling. Many, many, many people in the world live in areas where there is only "on street" parking. In my opinion EV are the BetaMax of the automotive world before synthetic fuels or hydrogen fuel cells take over.

@@robcarson6127 This is all wrong, but I will not argue anymore against one who talks about hydrogen...this is just too exhausting for me. My wife did engineering for hydrogen about 30 years ago (we both are Dipl.Ing)...it never improved really...it stays inefficient...and I will until I die. Riding a dead horse is nothing any one should do...waste of time and money. I agree that Batterie needs improvement, but there are now a lot of companies investing money in this area and which Batterie-Technology will win is completely unclear. The grandson of Mr. Piech creates currently a car with a claimed loading speed of 5mins for 400km...CEO is now Mr. Müller former VW CEO...they do not joke about future. In the next 10 years we will see a major jump in this area. Just a sample from the past, without changing really much in Batterietechology. The BMW I3 startet with 20kwh and is now at 42kwh on the same space!!! This is just more than 100% in 7 years. If we see Tesla with 100kwh, we will for sure see 200kwh Batteries in another 7 years and 900km+ Range. The chinese company NIO will ship a 150kwh Batterie in 2021 already with a range of 900km. If you see a trend you missed the trend. ;-) Hydrogen and eFuel is Bullshit from a dying Oil-Industry, which looses control with the energy change, since a lot of people can produce the own energy on your own roof...which I already do.

@@robcarson6127 Hydrogen is not, and will never be, a viable alternative to BEV nor even ICE for the majority of road vehicle applications. It is expensive to produce, using vast amounts of electrical power which could be used more advantageously in battery vehicles. Then, it is even more difficult and expensive to store and transport than petroleum. Safe refuelling would only be possible at specially equipped and strictly supervised stations which would require far more investment and costly staffing than today’s gas stations. Compare the additional production, transport, handling and infrastructure costs with electric vehicle transport - no contest except in very specialised applications.

@@patrickhay8079 The reason car manufacturers have not pursued hydrogen (so far) is because they have no control over the industries that would have to be mobilised to start production of Hydrogen. Secondly, car manufacturers are in fact developing hydrogen driven cars. BMW will bring out the X5 in 2022. Battery powered cars are one big white elephant and are utterly ridiculous

The same problem as an regular ICE car, EV CAR has to achieve at least 2 conditions. Longest range possible. And most importantly issue the top door has to have a leap.Tall people to avoid hit the head when you get on the car. THESE ARE IMPORTANT ISSUES TO ACHIEVE FIRST. THEN WE TALK ABOUT A CAR.

When I first viewed this and the road test by What Car I was very surprised even for What Car. I took a test drive of this before I bought my I Pace and thought the BMW was pathetic in comparison but What Car seem to think the sun shines out of the BMW badge -or could it be the advertising. Anyway I thought perhaps its me as I freely admit to hating BMWs However I recently watched a few episodes of the excellent Fifth Gear Recharged and they drove the IX3 and compared it to some other EVs including the I Pace, Their test team consists of real experts unlike this bunch of amateurs at What Car and include Jason Plato who knows the odd thing or too about cars and handling. Like me they were very underwhelmed by the IX3 and said that the I Pace and the Mach E handled better as well as being better purpose built cars rather than the IX3 where the electrical system is shoe-horned into a standard car designed for an ICE.. My message if you want to choose a decent EV watch the Fifth Gear team and ignore this lot! The worlds best electric SUV -not even close.
