Same here! I feel like I want to buy everything! haha so this video is helpful to be honest with myself about what my limits are/should be. I definitely am still feeling impulsive but I want to curate decks that make sense for me since I don't see myself reading professionally.

I love your process. I think for me, it's also about collecting and not just having working decks. I gave away more than half my decks last summer and I still have many (and want more, as my reading style and approach to decks have changed radically in the last nine months- went from historical, esoteric, and spiritual approach/study to completely intuition-based, non-spiritual approach) but I enjoy researching the decks, deciding if and when is the right time to purchase, opening the decks and exploring them, and then having them in my collection, even if I don't actually read with them often. I also REALLY enjoy supporting independent artists and small businesses by my purchases- I love that I can buy a little box full of art that also serves a purpose for me. I try and remind myself that a mass market deck is the same price (usually less) than a book. If I spend the same time with a deck as I spend reading a book, then it's money well spent. I think we're sort of taught that decks are frivolous, an unnecessary expense, but people wouldn't give up their coffee or their books, etc. My decks are my morning coffee :)

I love your analogy at the end!! Sometimes I feel guilty buying and collecting decks because I know they may not be 100% necessary as a tool to have for personal & spiritual growth (for me). However, when I really think about it, I do spend as much time with my decks as I would just reading a book. Plus I don’t drink coffee anyways so I guess that makes up for it 😉 And supporting small businesses/indie artists is definitely an added bonus!

I have just the opposite issue. I have no decks. I want them but I cannot justify always making those types of purchases. This month I want to buy my first deck. I understand your dilemma. I was in that spot years ago where I had the money to spend. I don’t know what else to say. It was great having money to spend. There is nothing wrong with spending money if you are blessed to do so. It will probably be awhile before I catch up to you which is good because I can find value in watching your videos. Time is money. And I am older and very aware of time. The few times I tried tarot I had purchased a Rider Waite deck. I felt like the cards spoke to me. At the time, it scared me. Now my life is filled with spirit inspired blessings and I am not afraid to delve into my thoughts and subconscious feelings. I want to grow my spiritual life more. I’m so glad that I let go of my fears. Thank you for the video.

Something I've done to cut back on being a deck consumer is that I have a wishlist I constantly curate. If I very badly want a deck, I put it in. After a few months I go through the list and if I can't remember what about it made me excited or even remember what it looked like, I take it off. That lets me know if I was just being carried away by fomo or the aesthetic. I love my collection at this point and even if there's decks I don't use often, they add value to the collection in some other way (limited editions, out of print, or plain old sentiment).

Being a deck consumer is very tempting when certain publishers have their 50% off sales! It would be easy to just binge buy instead of pausing to remember that you didn’t ever consider those decks at full price. I find like you that keeping a wishlist helps prevent such impulse purchases.

I'm working through my "one and done" decks right now, using them for my daily draws. Seeing if I want to work more with any of them. I'm really enjoying the process. I also have a special attachment to my first deck, the Morgan-Greer. If I had to live my life with only one deck, it would be that.

Ugh, I’m really struggling with being a deck consumer right now. I’m new to tarot/oracle, and there are SO many pretty shiny temptations. And I’m horrible about instant gratification. I’ve found some wonderful soul-connecting decks...but also feeling overwhelmed with suddenly having so many decks and I don’t yet have a routine and practice that helps me use them all. I’m trying to step back and just use what I have and get to know them...and then I see a pretty shiny new deck. Sigh. Your tips and questions to ask myself before buying a deck are really helpful. Thank you so much.

I hear that! I'm years and years in and I still don't have a steady way to use my decks. I think as you're exploring it's natural to be drawn to different things to see where they lead you. I have a wishlist and i review it every so often while looking at them again online. It really helps me prioritise what I REALLY want.

I feel similarly! I'm new and there are so many decks that call to me! Although I don't feel overwhelmed with what I have (3 tarot and 5 oracle), I know I'm already at a place where I need to slow down and curate well for myself. I think the reason I don't feel overwhelmed is because my decks are pretty diverse already, and as an artist, I use them not only for journaling, meditation, and personal growth, but also for writing poems and making art. I'm learning to naturally incorporate my cards into practices I already do. Yet this is also the reason I want to buy more and more decks haha. It's so hard! How do you mostly use yours? What is your current practice like?
@ledzlim1588
@ledzlim1588 3 жыл бұрын
I ask myself key questions before any purchase: - Do I have anything similar already, which one would I rather keep? Is there anything else coming later that I may like instead? - How rare is/will this deck be? Can I delay purchase? - Does it pair well with a tarot or oracle deck in my collection? I keep an excel sheet of my decks with notes on visual art style, the energy I get, etc so I can easily check if I have similar decks that I need to rehome if I want to buy something new. I also score the decks so if have to declutter I’ve already marked which ones should go first :)

I also can be a bit of an emotional shopper and it’s taken me a while to figure out how best to determine ahead of time if a deck will be right for me (which frankly I still get wrong sometimes but occasionally you don’t know until it’s in your hands) and what size is a comfortable and manageable collection for me. I am not a strict adherent of the one-in-one-out rule but I’ve found that there’s a size my collection sort of hovers around because any larger feels like too much, and there’s a pretty regular outflow of decks to go along with the regular inflow. I liked your point about moving things along as soon as you know it’s time for them to leave your collection...that’s always my goal too. I love buying and checking out new decks and I know I’m not going to stop doing that, so what I can at least aim for is having the outflow balance out the inflow, and that tends to work well so my collection doesn’t feel stagnant but also doesn’t get unmanageable.

Really good ideas and thoughts! I fully admit I am a collector. A life long hunter of the beautiful, the rare, the strange....Most of my childhood I was in tow of a parent or grandparent searching for that object of desire. And I've done it all of my life, as a hobby and a profession. I get a huge thrill hunting for vintage, rare and unusual decks as well as supporting independent artists decks on Kickstarter and the like. I have a pretty big collection....not as many as you....but not far off. I do have my lists....decks I like the looks of and need to research and decks I know I really want. I also put lots in Amazons Shopping list cart to do further thought on. I try really hard to think about a deck and not be impulsive....but sometimes a deck just screams my name and I buy it without hesitation. I know what I like....I've been doing this for my whole life. The way I feel less isolated with my room full of decks is to share them on IG. It's been really fun for me and it helps me stay in touch with all my decks. Thank you, Dawn Michelle, for another great series! You are my favorite tarot tuber!

I really appreciate this video and it’s transparency. As a reader of 13+ years I have quick a large collection. In the past few years I have started to be more picky about what I bring into my collection. I have my work horse decks that I use professionally based on theme or topic but the difference between collector and consumer is a deep point! Deck FOMO is real, not every beautiful deck that you admire needs to be in the collection. This is a real topic that deck collectors have to tackle!

Over the past few years my tarot deck mindset has changed from I NEED ALL the decks to convince me WHY I should consider this deck. I pay attention to all my deck breakers. (Cardstock, artwork, cost, energy, etc) of one of those is off in any way I’m out. Though I have found that due to my tastes changing, I may find a deck intriguing years later. So it is an ever evolving relationship with my collection. Great set of videos. Thank you for sharing your thought processes. Love your channel. ♥️

Excellent video and series! Watching deck walk throughs is a key technique I use in deciding which decks I want to buy. I generally won't buy a deck if I haven't seen a walk through first. Doing that has helped me both buy and not buy decks in a good way. I also keep a running wish list of decks I want to buy or might be interested in and need to watch deck walk throughs of. That really helps me decide which decks I want to buy.

Lovely and thoughtful video! 🥰 One collecting rule/strategy I like to use is to ask "can this deck potentially grow with me as I grow in my life?" - a deck that requires me/my life to be stagnant (in ways I don't want) in order for it to stay relevant doesn't appeal to me as a reader nor a collector. This question, on top of my fairly extensive/exhaustive set of collecting rules, has managed to kick out even decks that meet all my other acquisition criteria 😂🤣😂🤣

I can definitely attest to lists helping me in really curating my collection and getting ahead of impulse buying (which I’ve had a problem with while collecting other things, like crystals 😅). But I’m the same way in that a deck has to be on my list before I can consider making a final purchase. Before buying I’ll also watch walk throughs & everything, leave the deck in my cart for a day or more like you mentioned, and if it’s still calling to me and isn’t going to be redundant in my collection I’ll add it. Thank you for sharing this series! It was very helpful and informative.

This is great! I appreciate your comments about being mindful about purchasing versus being a consumer. I learned this lesson from back when I used to buy makeup all the time 😑 so when I found tarot and oracle I was already thinking like this. But at the same time, by nature I am just not a minimalist 😄 even with thoughtful purchases, so I will have to revisit your playlist from time to time for support when things get out of hand lol. You tend to think about things similarly to me but with a lot more structure, so it's helpful to hear about your process and lessons learned 😊

So many good points here! I definitely have one category of decks that I love and that I’m drawn to above all others and that’s decks that contain old photography or old artwork with a collage element. I have many decks that fall into this category. Even though I already have Maree Bento’s (Divine Muses) Antiquarian Tarot and Carrie Paris’ Relative Tarot, I’m still hoping to get the Stretch Tarot. The two decks I mentioned have a similar color palette and similar collage details and might look like they are basically the same thing, but they read very differently from one another. I think that’s a genre of deck that I will always be attracted to because it reflects a feeling I’ve always had of not belonging to the time I’m living in...among other reasons! For the rest of my collection, it’s still very much trial and error because my journey with tarot only extends a couple of years. And yes...those Hay House sales are the bane of my existence 😆.

Really interesting thank you. Definitely something to consider as I have decks that I have never used. The idea of actually planning WHEN to do that deep dive really resonates with me. I recently sold a few decks for the first time. I had the Moonchild. I'd obsessed about getting it. Drooled over it. Finally got it and... nothing. And there it sat. Recently sold it to someone also in the UK who was in search of... for the same money I paid for it. I'm so glad I finally did it! Now someone who lives it has it. I think for me, what I actually DO with tarot hasn't really solidified yet. And as I explore, the price tag on the decks that I want seems to go up and up. I recently got those OOP celtic decks 🙈 But I have limited myself to 2 decks a month for 2021 max. There's always something new and shiny. Lol. Thank you for sharing all your take aways. x

I really needed this video. Initially I only had the tarot of the divine it was the only deck that spoke to me. Then I purchased 3 more tarot decks and 4 Oracle decks after watching too many KZbin videos. Currently all these decks have a purpose (one oracle deck is just to help me learn flowers and the other is just self care). Because of KZbin I recently discovered Kickstarter tarot decks and I backed 4 tarot decks and one oracle deck. I don't regret the oracle deck but I really regret just backing tarot decks since they'd seem innovative or cool. Watching your video helped me reflect on my recent choices and I think apart from Danielle Noel's upcoming ocean oracle deck I won't be buying anymore this year.

I soothe my deck consumer brain by putting decks on a list, not in a shopping cart. There have been 2 main exceptions to this: the Witches Tarot by Ellen Dugan. I got this at ConVocation after attending Ellen's class on tarot. Also I bought the Legacy of the Divine at a friend's yardsale. I don't have many decks and I don't want to collect an overwhelming amount of decks. I am more likely to fall into that now that I have gained an interest in comparing different tarot imagery as part of my tarot study. That is what prompted the Legacy of the Divine purchase. Pinterest boards help.

I'm on my second wave of tarot hoarding and this video came at the perfect time! the last time I purchased a lot of tarot decks was in 2016 and by the end of that year I let go of over 5 to 7 tarot and oracle decks and left only 3 decks. This 2020-2021 I have too much time on my hands watching the explosion of tarot and oracle videos on KZbin and bought 3 tarot and 5 oracle decks so far and I have around 4 more being delivered. So now I've decided not to buy anymore this year, except the Disney Villains which I already preordered LOL. I already had to rehome 5 decks this year, including the entire Wild Unknown as I was getting more and more confused with each reading.

I use them alot, I also have The Green Witch Tarot, that covers the Earthy Tarot with some witchy tone, do I don't have to purchase The Wizard Tarot, The Forest of Enchantment Tarot and/or The Everyday Witch Tarot. My problem with keeping a list is sometimes I will find a new deck, write it on the list, and then buy it so I can check it off the list immediately. I definitely need to declutter my deck collection soon as I have been collecting for five years now and I’ve also been gifted a lot of decks that just don’t resonate with me at all. I’m struggling to find that balance where I can actually use what I bring in. It’s hard with indie decks because there’s always a chance they’ll just go out of print and I’ll never get them. Anyways I’m just rambling because I have a lot of thoughts~ Thanks for the video.

It's so disappointing when someone gifts you a deck that is just wrong for you. Because they really tried. My brother gifted me the Necronomicon Tarot a couple years ago. He thought I would love it. But, ugh, no, I don'r care to bring HP Lovecraft into my spiritual practice, thank you. Talk about bad mojo!

So, I watched this last year when it was originally uploaded, but I came back to it now and it is still very helpful. The key takeaways you shared here are interesting and certainly things I'll try in the near future (after I'm done with the "move everything out" phase) 😅 Thank you so much for those tips and thoughts. 💛

I am so glad you found it helpful! I'm still trying to keep all these things in mind but I've noticed my practice is shifting so that been interesting on how I've been approaching my current declutter. Thank you for watching again! ❤️

I have a 1 month rule. Works great, but ofc it won't avoid buying decks that do not resonate. Letting them go (maybe I will use it in the future?) is the difficult part for me. I did a declutter recently when I moved countries, and it felt great to keep the ones I really use plus a couple that I use just because i enjoy the touch. It was hard to let go some beauties that did no work for me (enchanted forest) but the final feeling of lightness is great.

I feel the same way, I'm still doing some slow decluttering here and there because it's so nice to have a collection that feels in alignment with my practice. 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️

I think a lot of us tarot lovers really like the aesthic parts, but everyone of us usually have the same five decks or so we use on daily basis. I have been a big deck buyer, but this year i have zoomed into five ish, i really want and have been looking at for a time now, and i try to have a «retail therapy» mindset stop. Because i really dont need it. Its time to find joy inside. And i have a lot of decks now that i can use and get to know more.

I defiantly struggle with that too. I really appreciate the art in a lot of decks and so I'm tempted to keep decks I'll never read with. But for me, there is a line (not to mention a space issue) so I'm working on being more mindful about what I bring in... and more importantly, letting go of things when they have served their purpose. 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️

I’m decluttering my collection right now. I am not getting rid of entire decks, I am going through each deck and removing any cards that I don’t resonate with or that are repetitive. I’ve got about 70 decks and so far I’ve removed about 160 cards. Going to give the pile of cards to the local card shop. Figuring maybe the owner can put a cards in customers bags or split the pile into small unique decks for himself.

Also for anyone who is concerned about space if you don’t mind not having the boxes and storing the cards in bags instead you can sit a lot more in a basket or box. I have 70 decks and they all fit in two places. One basket and one decorative box.

One thing I do is I try to buy the best deck in a particular style. Before I buy a new deck I try to see if I have one like it already. Often if a style is popular then a bunch like it are produced. You made great points!!

OMG! I love the idea of setting aside 1 to 2 days a month as deck buying days! I feel like that would be super beneficial, especially because I can be indecisive sometimes so if I only have two days that I can purchase odds are, one of those days I won’t buy anything at all LOL I just might have to adopt this!

Hello! I have really enjoyed your deck culling mini series - I need to do this with my collection and you have given me some great tips. If you have time, could you explain what you mean by an oracle deck 'pairing' with your tarot decks please? Thank you 🥰

With Amazon my problem is they tell you whether the price goes up or down. I have a deck sitting in my basket I am contemplating bc it was a bit steep in price but now it keeps getting more expensive and I really want it..argh.

I have that problem too, although I watch for it to go down. If it goes down like 2% I'm like "ooh it's on sale now" lol. That doesn't mean I actually need the deck. 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️
