There was also a big yo-yo effect in the gap: one moment it shrunk to 1.1, later it went back to 4.0 It was still an intense race. People just want chaos all the time which isn't always needed

Nope. We also should also ask Perez how completely impossible it was to overtake and how many miles away it was from Monaco everyone stated it was. Red Flag carnage seems to be the new normal for an exciting race. Two championship contenders within seconds for the entire race, seeing if strategy is playing out, personally I couldn´t ask for more.

As a Dutch person, I think the broadcast problems stem from how much that Max vs Lewis battle for the win was making our hearts race as Max fans. I couldn't relax till he crossed the line. Hell, I was shouting at the race directors to put the interval times back up because they had been gone for like 15 seconds. So the race was exciting in that sense, but yea a lot of action was lost to the greater narrative that they were more focused on. Dutch driver can win first Dutch race in forever, etc. I expect it to be back to normal in Monza.

For Max fans it was an edge of your seat race start to finish. You always expect #blessed’s insane luck to kick in somehow. The WTFs are a bit down on the race because that didn’t happen. Also, plenty of overtakes, including one for the lead. I think Zandvoort is a proper F1 track.

Agree, it's always good to have some variety in the races. I always enjoy the spectacle of F1 cars flying round tracks like Zandvoort, Monaco, Suzuka and Hungary, even if the racing isn't the best.

Before the MSC and PER first stops; PER - LAT MAZ-MSC ALO-OCO ALO-GIO OCO-GIO RIC-GIO LAT-MSC PER-MSC After PER - MSC stops; PER-VET PER-MAZ PER-LAT PER-KUB PER-TSU GAS-ALO after GAS pit Most significantly; VER overtakes BOT to ensure not being held up and lose P1 to HAM. (HAM-BOT) TSU-KUB ALO-SAI PER--RIC After Per 2nd stop. PER-NOR PER-OCO This was all I remember form overtakes ON TRACK. I May have missed a few, there were more changes in position but these might have been undercuts or strategy differences, not sure. This number is NOT "boring with few overtakes" but an average number of overtakes. There are tracks that on average will have more of them. This amount however is way more than one would on average see at tracks like Hockenheim, Baku, Interlagos, Portimao, Sepang, Sakhir, Suzuka, Paul Ricard, Sochi, Imola, Monaco, Estoril, Adelaide and others.

I enjoyed all the strategies employed! I forgot how much I liked Zanvoort, it's almost like the race doesn't matter, because the track is so dang good. I think that today's cars are too big for these heritage tracks, and they really need to make them smaller. I liked NBC Sports coverage of races much more than I like Sky's.

"Het is stil aan de overkant" [it's silent on the opposite side] refers to the opposite side of the stadium, where the fans of the opposing side are seated. The winning side would sing this to drive home the point that the other 'losing' side don't have anything to chant about. It's a little less wholesome than you made it out to be ;)

The direction felt very much like “we are at the Dutch Grand Prix, max is winning we better show as much as we can” I appreciate it. But when he’s just cruising around a few seconds in front(or 30 as at end), they need to be showing the action! This goes for every race and whoever is winning! I don’t care if the place is for 14th if there’s 4 side by side. I want to watch that, not Hamilton Bottas and verstappen like astern 6 seconds apart. I watch sky for 25mins after race and there was still no replay off the sainz alonso Perez ocon battle on the last few laps.

Kinda true, but this isnt any different than Hamilton was. In the end F1 is a commercial company that needs its fans. On Max verstappens Home race with 80k Orange fans in the stands and most probably atleast half the country watching, you cannot ignore Max' existance. You have to show him and a few times too. Eventhough he's not "doing" anything. Its been like this with lewis and it will be like this with many of them. The best action doesn't equall the most enjoyment from the viewers.

At the time, when Mercedes stopped Lewis, I thought they did it at that point as they wanted to do it early enough to leave enough laps to the end to make sure Verstappen would have to go on to hard tyres and not the softs, in the hope the lap time difference between Lewis on the mediums and Verstappen on the hards was enough to give Lewis a chance to catch him.

It wouldn't matter what track it was. Max had a couple of tenths on Lewis and started in pole. Unless he has a mistake, strategy difference or safety car he will always win by a few seconds. I actually thought Zandvort was good. Cars couldn't get past easily but they could overtake which is nice for a change.

Don't understand why people would complain the race was boring. In fact ever since I returned to watching F1 3 years or so ago( used to watch back in the Schumacher era) I can count on one hand races which I didn't find entertaining. Yet so often after races there are always complaints I read. I guess if you only watch F1 to see the podium finishers having some exciting battle you could be disappointed easily though. I thoroughly enjoyed this race. Highlight for me was Alonso finally managing to pass Sainz on the final lap (or was it the one before?). Jumped up from my sofa and cheered. Great race with some good performances. Gasly being a standout. Great quali and race. Another standout for me would be Alonso. 6th is a great result for that Alpine car. Realistically you can't really hope for much better than that.

Common man, they race BIG-ASS DTM cars at Zandvoort. It's plenty big enough for F1. If the Zandvoort track is not good enough we have another EPIC racetrack in Assen. Famous from TT bike racing.

Seeing the gap go to 3 seconds, go back to 1,1 seconds and go back to 4 seconds. Pit strategy could have a effect on the lead etc etc. Loved the race

I think people forget that underlying pace is a strategists best friend, it's easy to look like you've made a good call when you've got a quick car... If your car is not good enough you are always going to end up in positions where people look at the strategy and say how it could have been done better

I read there were 25 overtakes at Zandvoort. About as much as at highly praised circuits on the calendar, like Silverstone, the Red Bull Ring and Baku. So it was everything but the Dutch Monaco that some people were referring to.

Sorry but how on earth can Leclerc and Sainz get the same grade? 😀 Sainz finished two places behind him AND about 30 seconds behind him, without any bad luck, with the exact same strategy, just because Sainz was simply that much slower. He himself admitted this, he said he was just struggling and extremely slow and didn't find the pace Leclerc could find. Also, got overtaken by Alonso on the last lap (both of them on worn tyres), when others were successfully defending less than 1 sec gaps for dozens of laps. Either give Sainz a C and Leclerc a B or a B and an A, but this "high B and low B" is very weird because it's the same grades for a fairly good performance and a kinda bad performance.

Look at Lap 1 and how long the field was bunched up together. I do feel like there are more possibilitys to overtake next year in Zandvoort. Also just look how fast Max was next to Bottas. He was practically in hes gearbox before the end of the last turn.

Also half the race, one of the screens on the PLC was Stroll. But it's nice to have the F1 app to switch between onboards and watch a lot of Perez overtakes and the Gasly one on Alonso when they happened.

I think they were also getting the hang of the camera's and shots. In the beginning there were a lot of close shots, zooming in and out and moving left and right to follow the cars in the corners. So you could see the cars but not the track, and it all seemed a bit frantic. Later on they had more wide shots where they managed to follow cars the better part of a lap in a single shot, that worked much better imo to show the cars and the track.

Must be Hamilton fans, that race was a nail biter. The top two were within 3 seconds for like 60 laps and what a strategy battle. Max held off both Lewis and his wingman all on his own. With all the red flags in the previous sessions it always felt like one was going to happen. That was a great race!

Gotta disagree with Katy about the Mick Mazepin thing. Not saying this as a Max fan, but I don't think there was much potential for mercedes to win the race, besides the moment when Max had to pass Bottas. Afterwards Max and Helmut both said they had more power to go a couple of tens of a second faster if nescesary.

It could have been the pitstop strategy that could have cost Max the lead. Merc didn't planned the strategy very well luckily.

Guys. First, Hamilton was going to pit for fastest lap anyways, which is exactly why Merc pitted Bottas, who was 23 seconds behind Lewis, and in Lewis’s pit window. Second, can we get the Silverstone math correct? Perez MAY have finished 10th, for one point. Instead, he boxed to take the fastest lap from Lewis, thereby taking away one point. That is point neutral for the constructers and +1 for Max in the driver’s champ. A smart move.

I don’t think it should be that big of a surprise, think how big Silverstone would be if they stopped racing there for 36 years. Also there hasn’t been as many uber-talented Dutch drivers as brits, and none of them had won a home race compared to many brits have won silverstone, hasn’t Lewis won Silverstone the most of any driver? So I understand why there was so much passion and intensity from the Dutch fans and nation.
