I am driving an old (1995) ISUZU KB 2.8L Turbo disel with no modifications. The car has some 700000 km in the odometer and still going strong. My only complain about it its very fragile suspension when I go off-road which translates to approximately 500 to 600 euros per year in suspension for weare and tear. Do you guys have similar problems with newer ISUZU Dmax. If not for these suspension problems I was not going to hesitate for a moment getting this new ISUZU with all this luxury.

The big advantage of the (stock) Ranger is the fact the front traction control stays on with the diff locked. In harder(ish) conditions it takes the Ranger that little bit further than the D-Max or the 'Lux. However I found the traction control system on the Hilux far better than Ford's. Whack some kind of locker on the Hilux and I think it is the winner off road (all other things being equal). There again, whack a front locker on the Ranger and the wheelbase lets it outperform the Hilux (and definitely the D-Max - though haven't driven the latest one) in most conditions. Makes it a pig on tighter tracks, however...

@@pacman5590 Are you talking about the latest Triton? I've driven the last model numerous times in off-road conditions. The Ranger is significantly better off road, apart from tight turns on rough uphill (the longer wheelbase is against it here). All reports suggest the latest Triton (which I haven't driven) is a little better than the old model, but still not as capable as a Ranger...

I admire how you guys highlight the traction control system of the Ranger but I'd like to point out that hardcore off-roaders wouldn't even rely on traction control alone, those are simply electronic wizardry. It's the mechanical bits that counts, on how an ute performs when relying on what's physically there to use. The D-Max's protocol to disengage the traction control fully when the rear diff lock is on is quite a smart move tbh because you have a choice whether stick with electronic or mechanical wizardry. For reliability and durability purposes, would always go for the latter. I'd use the former for the light stuff only to ensure utmost control on gravel surfaces but for crawling, I wouldn't really want to rely on it too much.

Interesting that the Isuzu traction control system never looked like it activated, as there was constant free spin on the lifted wheels, there is a rugged terrain button inside the Isuzu. It would be interesting to see if this was activated in order to turn on the traction control system. Also a Important note is that the ranger traction control system never completely turns off. Unlike the Isuzu That is 100 % off. In sand dune driving this is a big plus otherwise the traction control system applies brakes & limits the throttle to control wheel spin. I would rather have a TC system that can be completely turned off. Interesting that other reviews put the Isuzu ahead of the ranger in off-road performance, very subjective I guess

As they say, it depends. Deciding factor for me was how little the DMax hunted gears during acceleration.. When the dealer let me test drive the ranger with my jetski, I was shocked how often the Ranger changed gears in the 6-9 range. When I hooked up to DMax, it was either 4-5 gears. I’ve driven both and the ranger is amazing, but was totally impressed how relaxed the Isuzu 3.0l was. I know I lost my deposit with Ford, but can’t wait to get my Isuzu in 3 months.

It's generally a given that the vehicle is going to change gears during acceleration. If you're feathering the throttle on the Ranger it is going to change gears more. But overall, the 10-spd provides a much better delivery of power as it has more ratios to keep it on peak torque and gives much better fuel economy. Also the engine is more powerful and the Ranger has a nicer interior. The Ranger is a proven vehicle as its been in production from 2011 on the same platform and is the second best selling car in Australia.

I have a Subaru XT Premium with excellent safety features and have a Toyota Hilux at work. I must say prior I had a Prado done 300K klm diesel 2001 it was bullet proof and great off road. So admittedly I have a bias to Toyota. I swapped the Hilux with my mate to drive his Ranger as looking for a ute and wanted I crossed all bases. I also was fortunate enough to have a couple of drives of a D-Max with a set of good all terrain through Dingo Dell and out the back to camp over at Arocrombie “beach” (river super steep decline and difficult to get out) the D-Max was bloody awesome and the most comfortable out of the lot. The thing that wins it for me is D-Max is better appointed in the cabin with better safety options than rivals and also felt better to me. I am now going from a Toyota to a D-Max at the end of the month to me it now the king of the 4WD utes. Read other reviews other has also chosen the D-Max for better bang for buck and better comfort. My decision with two kids under 11 is safety whilst it has not had it’s ANCAP rating it certainly has better features to avoid being in a prang and more airbags than any other in the range.... I was personally impressed with D-max off road capabilities. So I will put my money where my mouth is.

As a mechanic and keen off roader, I just can’t believe Isuzu chose to turn the front traction control off when you lock the rear diff!?!?. The 10 YEAR OLD Ranger doesn’t and neither does the Hilux. Don’t get me wrong, I love what Isuzu have built so much I’ve just bought one, but as a serious off road traveler I now have to look at aftermarket options to fix this issue. It would be so easy for Isuzu to simply update the software and fix this and I’m hoping they do.

what you fellas fail to mention is that typically, you need to air down your tyres in these conditions. This will improve grip as lower psi increases the footprint of the tyre on the terrain. Obviously stock tires aren't as great as A/T or M/T however still an improvement. I personally believe you wouldn't have needed to apply that rear diff in this test if done so.

From the video proved that the Ford Ranger was not just a king in the Onroad field but also the king on the offroad field. So, don't be fooled at a cheap price, because it might be a cheap product. If possible I know, how is the tax system in Australia? Is it just as ridiculous like in Indonesia? And what is the status of the Ford vehicle there? Is CKD or CBU?

Good comparison on the tc systems looks like Ford has got that sorted. Only critique is the comparison of the drivetrain. We all can look up the numbers and how many gears a gearbox has but which has a better feel to the driver? You give the impression here the Ford has a better engine just because it's numbers are higher and a better gearbox because it has more ratios but that may or may not be the case. What do you the journalist subjectively feel?

What were the tyre pressures? Regardless of what the tyre placard says they should be equal for parity and probably between 20 and 25 psi. And then see if they need diff lock. It’s not really a equal test if both placards have different pressures.

It's a shame the D-Max doesn't have traction control on the front when diff lock is engaged. That's a poor decision. Even a 2004 Touareg had excellent traction control, and with diff lock maintained traction control on the front, so it's hardly difficult to program a vehicle computer is that way. However with the money saved over the Ford a front locker can be fitted to the D-Max with change left over if rock crawling and steep slippery off-roading is your intended recreation. Plus with the D-Max you get much better towing and none of the annoying as hell Ford chimes when you get into the car.
