I have owned the 4 door version of this in the states for 2 years. After 60 trails and punishing conditions, it has been trusty and remarkably capable. Previously I would only consider Toyota’s, but I’m glad to have given Jeep a shot.

As an FJ cruiser owner, I am supposed to despise Jeep but how can any one not appreciate how capable this thing is in stock form. No doubt, the most capable off roader in stock form in oz atm. Great approach, departure and break-over angles, twin locked, 77:1 gearing, sway bar disconnects and solid axles front and back. It literally has all the boxes ticked for a proper off roader.

I really enjoy your off road reviews Sam. You are one of the few motoring journalists who really shows what vehicles are capable of. Is the Wrangler Rubicon Recon the most capable off-the-showroom 4x4 in Australia? I think you have proven in this video that it is. I can’t think of another currently available 4x4 that could do what the Rubicon did in this video.

No doubt the best off-roader in Australia. I hope Jeep imports more of the 2 door. It’s a shame the other major brands don’t offer a swb. Toyota’s bundera was a very capable off-roader. At least there is Suzuki and defender are providing a swb. In theory the Rubicon recon doesn’t need to be modified. I wonder how many will remain stock. Most of the issues with reliability of a vehicle comes from modifying. Something as simple as a bull bar will lead to shock and bushes wear. A lift will effect ball joints and drive lines. To have a stock vehicle this capable should save you time and money (if you can keep it stock).

We got half a dozen of these 2 doors rubicons from a diverted shipment here in NZ, they have the 2lt 4 cylinder turbo. really impressive power hauls the boat and all the gear up porters pass like it's not even on the hitch

I've had a Grand Cherokee and now a JK Wrangler. The Wrangler is such a unique vehicle in a sea of independent suspension utes in Australia. It's a pity they weren't priced a little lower as more people would jump onto the brand. Great test, all things considered, what could you test it against? There's literally nothing as an apple's to apple's test.

Wait, did you say it has less room than a "normal" wrangler? I gotta say I think the two door has a bit more history than the four door. By, I don't know, 60+ years? Hopefully the two door stays in the australia market for you guys. Nothing better than squeezing through a tight corner of a trail then watching some four door minivan have to ten point turn to get around it. Great video, very nice to see some proper wheeling. Seems like a lot of channels in the states take it through a few puddles and a gravel trail and call it an off road course.

Congratulations making it over Ranger Bob’s. The short wheel base Rubicon is a particularly impressive vehicle. I still wonder about Fiat-Chrysler’s build quality, reliability and customer service. The review was excellent and the vehicle is very impressive.

I have a Series 2 Landrover, no mod cons, but it is built like a Brick Shithouse. It has been proven, the Jeep is a cardboard box.. I rolled my Landrover, pushed it back on it’s wheels and drove off.. Mate rolled his Jeep in the Sand Hills, complete right off..

@@abymathew295 mate.. Look up Australia Toyota Series 75 Landcrusier.. Also Australian Toyota Hilux, and Ford Ranger Max.. all on a Australian 4x4 road test creamed the Jeep.. 6 months test. Reliability was the huge problem, and the Chassis began to bend.. The old test is? Go get a 4 wheel alignment before trip. And get another one when you get home. All the Jeep tested where wonky on return test.. one had a 5deg bend in Chassis.. Classified unsafe at highway speeds..

I teach 4x4 and I’m currently in the market for a new car however the price of these things just blow my mind. I want my clients to have fun but for the same price I can fully deck out a hilux. Shame really the rubicon is a great looking vehicle

I think you would have to add a lift, bigger tires, diff locks, gear reduction and remove the sway bar then it might. Total cost would be about 40-45 grand.

I went to Lost City with a group of Jimnys one day. Most of us were newbies, so the more experienced did Ranger Bobs. 2 were highly modified with big wheels, lifts etc, the 3rd had 235s & a 2-inch lift & made it.

Basically because is American. But own the discontinued diesel and it’s much better in my opinion. But the v6 is a tried and tested engine

The usable torque is actually great because of the gearing/crawl ratio. It's far better offroad than you'd realise.

I saw that one you speak of on carsales. Think they are being VERY opportunistic as there was only 40 released in the Recon format. It’s been for sale for a while and I think it was priced with the hope it would sell before the next batch came out of Rubi shorties (which is now) and it didn’t. Going to check out one tomorrow @ $74k drive away. I think his quoted price was excl GST too.

Its 3 star from 2020 as AEB is standard and not an option. Same rating as Jimmy or mustang, no one seems to mind those?

The sale figures speak a different story. The jimny at least has the excuse of being a very small car but the protection of occupants in the wrangler is beyond pathetic, AEB does not fix that. People do care

@@christophergodbold not everyone wants to drive around in a boring soap shaped whitegoods appliance. People love Wranglers because they are different. It's like a sports convertible 4WD. Mustangs sell fine. Jimmy's sell fine. Both 3 star. In fact, a lot of sporty iconic models don't even bother with crash testing at all e.g. Porsche 911. Same as the wrangler. They are for people that value safety less and are willing to compromise for an iconic look, or a more fun driving experience. That might not be for you. That's fine. No one is forcing you to buy these sorts of cars.

An iconic car can still be fun to drive and be safe too u know. I dont even care about all the safety tech, but if ur car cant even protect the occupants upper body sufficiently, its a utter disgrace. Saying its an iconic is just excusing the manufacturers piss poor performance. Again with the exception of the Jimny, (which i believe scored 4 stars for the occupant protection) the sales figures of both mustang and wrangler continue to fall year after year. The worst part is i love the wrangler with a passion and want one but not will to die for one

You're paying for solid Dana 44 front rear axles/lockers/swaybar disconnect/crawler gearing/shocks all round/32" muddies with factory warranty, no engineering. Try upgrading those on another stock 4wd, and see what the price is.
